My Bro, 90% of members are from this thread, i did not say much about the association here because i didnt want to derail this thread and also wanted us to hold our first physical meeting which has been held so that we have a proper structure before we open the floor for more members to join.. Pumppie said its a sort of cabal, the only cabal i know of are the market women who are more organised than the fish farmers they exploit. This is also one of the reasons the association was birthed to have a unique voice, to dictate the price our produce..

AQUABREN FIRST MEETING

Aquaculture Breeders of Nigeria (AQUABREN) held its first General meeting on the 9th of July 2016, Hosted by Mr Robonski. Members from different parts of the country were present and also we had two guest speakers, DR OKI a Practicing vet doctor and Mr Alex the president of divine cooperative. Some of their advise was for fish farmers to venture into intergrated farming and processing, and also cutting of cost of production and marketing of produce should be the main focus.

Election was conducted by the electoral committee, some of the elected executives are as follows: Nuvermbarz Farm(president) Chilan farm (vp) Mr Kila(Sec General)
The meeting was a huge success as we also got to see ourselves and share indepth info with one another. Below are some of the pictures from the meeting..

My bro kindly get a scale its very important, so you can get their average weight before harvest.. Also helps for recording keeping.

Thank you everyone on this forum i have been behind the scene for almost a month now reading all contributions here and indeed studying the body language off all contributors. I wish to say i am greatly impressed as this is indeed a credible thread and i pray it continues to be. based on this i wish to officially announce my entrance as a newbie willing to learn. i count on all your wealth of experiences to make it. I already have a farm in Owerri Imo state with 3month 2weeks fish 500units and 2months old fish 800units, still learning the ropes but i think they are doing fine based on what i have read here or do you think otherwise? Am grateful to announce to the house that my fishes clock 1month 2day and their growth rates are vry overwhelming though there are some few stunted ones when refuse 2 eat, nevertheless we are pushing ahead, also this evening when i was feeding i notice one big fish swimming so doll in the water surface and refused to eat, i even tried 2 catch it but i can't so i decided to leave it till 2moro morning to lower the water so that i can catch it for inspection and possibling treatment. Once again a BIG tnks to evry members of this great trend......May GOD ALMIGHTY crown our wrk wit huge success.

As long as they are "jumping up" like you said the fries are OK. At this stage they lay at the bottom of the vat and at the corners. They will start swimming around the 5th or 6th day without hassles.. I know u are nervous but dont be opening the vat every seconds, continue your flow thru and just observe them once in a while. Keep us updated

Catfish may soon be out of the reach of the average Nigerian as the hike in prices of feeds has forced some fish farmers out of business, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

[b]Some farmers who spoke to NAN on Wednesday in Lagos described the development as worrisome, calling on government to ensure price stability in the industry. NAN reports that Skretting Feeds had in the first week of June increased the price of a bag of its 2mm feed from about N5, 000 to N8, 000. A farmer, Mr Emmanuel Ogharegbe, said that many of his colleagues had since abandoned the business, due to arbitrary hike in the prices of feeds. Ogharegbe said the price hike did not translate to an increase in the price of fish as fish traders operated a cartel that could frustrate any increase in per kilo price of fish.

Another farmer, Mrs Josephine Obi, wondered how she would survive if the price of feed continued to increase. “On June 1, I received a text message from a woman who was selling feeds to me announcing an increase in the prices of feeds. “Early this year, a Coppens Feeds increased its price and we shifted allegiance to Skretting Feeds. Now, the price of our new brand has increased by more than 50 per cent. Her colleague, Mr Olushola Ogundele, who decried the hike in feed price, appealed to the Federal Government to come up with a policy that would ensure price stability in the agricultural sector. Ogundele said that government’s intervention was critical to forestalling the scarcity of catfish in the country.

Another farmer, Mrs Beatrice Okpara, said that most of her colleagues were no longer in the farming business due to power outages and the increasing price of feeds. “The price of fish meal, a major component for formulating fish feeds, increased from N500 per kilo to about N800 per kilo in the space of two months. “If it continues like this, it will affect optimal production of fish,’’ Okpara said. Also, Mr Joseph Makinde, a fingerlings producer, said the imported feeds were critical in raising fish in the early phase of their life.

NAN recalls that Chief Tayo Akingbolagun, President of the Catfish Farmers Association of Nigeria, had on Jan. 11 told fish farmers to shun Coppens Feeds, over its arbitrary hike in prices. Akingbolagun said that the 50 per cent increment in the price of Coppens 2mm feeds, was a reflection of the company’s unfriendly posture in the market. He said that the 2mm Coppens Feeds being sold for N5, 000 suddenly increased to N7, 500 during the yuletide, a development that put many farmers into difficulty[/b].

I fertilized my tarpaulin pond after removing d manure i discovered dat pond A, produce maggots while pond B, produce zooplanton, 1.Now my question is which of this pond is more preferable 2 stock immediately? 2. Is it good to stock with d manured water cos d maggots pond smell (odour)? Tnks as i await ur response...... vry urgent cos am planning 2 stock any moment.

Just stock all the pond regardless of maggots and zoo-plankton, pls wash the ponds very thoroughly before stocking.. All the best

# Hello fellow farmers, We will no longer sell fish at the mercy of buyers, Feed cost has gone up drastically and its high time we also increase the price of fish. We should henceforth start selling our catfish of 300g to 800g for #500 while fishes Above 800g should be sold for #650-700

Lets adhere to this price as we will no longer be rearing fish for months for the buyers to still come to our farms to dictate the price for us. Enough is enough..

Very important also let us stock the amount of fishes we can conveniently cater for to avoid panic selling..
