I just want to share some experiences and advice too. Am in my second breeding and I must confess I made mistake and miscalculations...pls to all intending farmers, don't look at the mathematical calculation and profit oo, only rear the amount you can feed only and practical and field work matters too. I overstock my tank with fishes and it has screwed down my finance and wallet. All of these was because I didn't know how much it cost to feed certain amount of fish to maturity. I still struggle to get feed for them cos I can't see dem feed on themselves nor see dem malnourished all cos of the passion I have for the business. I have accepted my loss...though I might not get back my capital bt I want to rear and sell dem off even at lose. It's part of the experience for me.

@robonski15 made mentioned of buyers using juju and others wanting to buy on credit. I have experienced it oo. I sold second batch (700-900g) of my fishes to this fish market woman for N500 per kg. She buys 10kg every 2 days cos she is new to the area and don't have where to keep the left overs after business day. At first she was paying cash, later on she want me to sell credit and I declined. I told her even where I milled my feed, if it remain N1 they won't let me carry my feed and as such I can't sell credit considering my losses so far. I sell and use the money to get new feed.

Sometimes she wd come empty hand to ask me to sell to her on credit and I noticed the way she looks at me, she want to use her eyes to hypnotise me when we have eye contact, I would feel like giving her the fishes on credit bt wd later come back to my senses and stick on my ground that I don't sell credit oo...she wears black powder on her eye lid...I don't even look at eyes when I talk to her haha make her juju no get me.

It has been a rough road so far...I know there is a better tomorrow and I won't give up...my third breeding would be a success cos I know the do and don't.

More so, the last feed I did, I introduced Meramet. It is a highly protein source I spoke about in my recent post. I was told by my feed miller that 5kg of the Meramet is for 1tons feed. They would the maths for any kg feed u want to do. Happy farming

Na me hail pass oo Big bros. Hatching no be childs play and this fries mortality have chase so many people away from hatching. I mentored 2 peeps but the funniest thing is that they hatched twice and ran away from it. Thanks BOSS, I appreciate your comment. My next post will be on some safety that you can add to you farm practice so as to reduce early fry mortality. Tho farm practice differs but I'm sure I will surely help. Criticism, correction and contribution is allowed. Make all of us gather chop hatching money.

I did a research online to check out the cause of the MASSIVE mortality cos if over a million fries were in my pond it won't take them up to 7days before all of thgem pack up. I got a result that was close to my experience and it was fungi infection. Dunno if any person have experienced such? Its like a white patch on the fish skin and if only one fish is infected in the pond, the rest might get infected within 48 hours and pack up.
So I went to 2 different vet and each of them told me to buy iodasteryl and formalin. I mix d two together and used it. I started hatching again but I still experience the mortality but not as fatal as before.
*Them tell me say artemia dey kill fish, I threw my artemia away
*Them tell me say make I start with 0.2 but e no work 4 me
*i started using drugs for d fries during the first week and mix the drugs 2 their feed but it didn't worked at all
* make I stop here so I no go bore una
But one thing I did was I alway take note of my mistake and improve on all subsequent hatching and observe possible error I'm making, listd and corrected them. During this period I went to different farm, research and I even asked 4 help on this thread.
Everything turn around wen I adopted a method and only one fish survived but I kept the fish and told myself that my next hatching will be better than that and it was so.
I thank baba God say I'm back and better now
Lemme call your attention to the costly errors I made that cost me a lot
* I didn't treat the broodstock that brought the infection to my farm before using it and adding it to my broodstock vat
* I don't disinfect my vat/pond after every successful/unsuccesful spawning, wat I do den is just salt and water
* I gave all dead fishes that were infected to my broodstock to eat (stingy me, I no want wastage)


I guess I will stop here. Any addition, subtraction or question is allowed

You are right sir, my ponds, vats and equipments were all badly infected and I had tio use formalin too fumigate everything in my farm.
No worry boss make I continue my tori, I belief others might benefit from it and if their is any other info the elders of this thread can add to it to enlightment those still having the problem is highly welcome.

I hail you master you too much jare.. o yes fumigating of farm equipment is a must especially before spawning, i have had my own fare share of my fries dying after hatching for over a year it kept happening, i changed artemia, used 0.2, took my water to animal care for testing nothing i no do that period.. later i thought it was my enemy form the village, i did series of prayers and fasting infact if i write my epistle the whole nairaland will not contain it

All the same i praise you for your consistency and willingness to find out the possible causes, most time these problems arises from small things we fail to see or overlook.

Take heart ma . i remember when i injected a female brood stock for spawning, the next morning i could not find it i almost ran mad because i traveled far to purchase it after much ultimate search i found it still alive but too weak to move. i just gave it out coz i hardly eat catfish

Wow wow wow....came across this page around 6pm todau. I got glued and I'm currently at page 16....bt d 167pages I'm seeing looks herculean to finish in one nite oo...I must confess d thread is an eye opener tho.

Anyway, I'm a graduate currently managing a vrry small unrelated job. I'm not complaining, cos I knw some persons dnt have where to call their work place. However I really want to START Ssomething, no matter how small, and I made up my mind to dust my catfish lectures n nysc cert to see what I can get from this.

So pls for someone with roughly 100k savings, a pumping machine, and a room I'm ready to share with a fish vat, hw can I start, where do I start from?

I started my romance with cfish rearing as far back 2004, attended up to 4 seminars with practical hatching sessions in about 2, got a cert. for this also during my nysc. Thia thread will make it 5 Seminars now. lol

As for passion.....forget me o....I can just spend hours watching fishes swim gracefully. Mayb its not passion bt obsession. Whichever.

My fish scared me this morning.
On going to feed them I saw a fish had jump out from the pond and travelled a long distance. On sighting th fish, I tot it was dead. I brought a basin and it started moving, it resisted entering the basin. Somehow, I picked it, put it in d pond and changed the pond water. I was so so scared.

My neighbour said am lucky it did not enter d drainage, that from the drainage, it will find its way to river Niger. 4months fish that I plan to sell anytime soon. I was wondering if others have been jumping out b4 now and being eaten by rats, cats and bush babies.

SIR, i intend to use a plastic drum with a hole at the base which will be transmitted to ponds through pipes. this drum will be filled occasionaly with water from my neighbours borehole. the pond will have an opening beneath which will drain waste water away. i also intend to get a ph meter. thnks
