FUNGAL CONDITIONS Fungal organism grows on dead organic matter.. It could be a serious problem in the hatchery where dead or unfertilized eggs are infected, and live ones are chocked to death and taken over by fungal growth.. Fungal causes FIN ROT, MOUTH ROT and GILL ROT.. Fungal infection are difficult to treat.. Apllication of blagdon anti fungai can be administered.. But the maintenance of good hygiene practices is the most effective control measure... VIRAL DISEASE OF FISH This causes the fish to hang up on water with swollen stomach.. it spreads fast than wild fire... Viral infection have no known therapeutic control, but are preventable.. Good management practises combined with effective bio-security measures are advised... With all these mentioned the best is to prevent any form of disease by observing the best management practices. |
DISEASE CAUSING AGENTS BACTERIA VIRUSES FUNGAI PROTOZOAN PARASITE METAZOAN PARASITE BACTERIAL DISEASES: bacteria are single-celled microscopic organism and they occur in nearly all enviroment including the aquatic enviroment... In a balanced ecosystem, bacteria and catfish can live in harmonious equilibrium. However, once there is a shift in the natural equilibrium, the fish becomes more susceptible to pathogenic bacteria.. It is important to identify the specific bacteria causing a disease and then determine the appropriate antibiotics to be used to effectively control the disease.. Poor or wrong diagnosis always ends in indiscriminate use of drugs.. COMMON BACTERIA CONDITIONS 1. Columnaris disease (saddle-back): This is a disease of all catfish species... It is caused by the organism called flexibacter (now flavobacterium) columnare.. Disease outbreak is influenced by high water temperature and overcrowding, poor handling are factors for this condition... U will notice that the side of the catfish is peeling off and looks white..Mortality can be up to 70% if not treated on time.. The use of formalin at 250(mI/l) for 1hr was found to be very effective if the condition is still external... Blagdon anti bacteria maybe necessary in cases that has gone systematic.. 2. BACILLUS INFECTION In the acute form there is sudden death, with high mortality.. Severe emaciation and weight loss of the catfish will be observed... The fins will be somewhat red.. Oxytetracycline is the drug of choice.. Continued.. |
DISEASE INCIDENCE IN CATFISH FARMING Fish are cold blooded animals, and cannot control their body temperature.. They also live in aquatic environment that has complicated physio-chemical and biological properties.. This translate to the fact that the environment exert great influence on this group of animals.. An example is the high density of water compared to air, requiring the fish to exert energy to stay afloat.. Also in order to breath, fish has to pump water over its gills to extract oxygen (which ofcourse is limited to supply because of low solubility of air in water). STRESS is the number one factor that causes a fish to be susceptible to disease... They include.. Poor water quality Poor nutrition High stocking density Improper handling during netting, sorting, transportation etc.. All these ultimately results in increased susceptibility to disease and sometimes death.. Continued.. |
Due to frequent mails concerning catfish diseases..Watch out for my next post on major catfish diseases and its cure... God bless |
saheed':I have sent u a mail.. Thanks |
omode2: I dont own a farm yet bt would like to be part of your trainning programme. Thanks for all the good and indepth analysis.oh ok u will do a lot good by learning it practically first before venturing into the business.. U can send me a mail robonski15@rocketmail.com... Thanks |

omode2: I have just been granted permission on Nairaland have been following your posts i even sent you a mail. You mean your farm is in Alagbado? I live around there.Where is your farm located at alagbado.. |
Titay: @robonski. Thanks for this article it was an eyeopener, i want to knw where to get BLAGDON-disfectant you talked abt and how much does it go for. I reside in lagos. ThanksYou can get it at POULTRY SUPPORT at agege opposite the abattoir. It goes for #2500.. Thanks |
kelvin1191: Pls sir, can u prepare a book/ebook with video showing all that an aspiring farmer need to know about the buisness? I just acuired a half plot of land (50ft*100ft) here in Benue state few days ago and i will like to invest in fish farm & poultry due to its flexibility. My mail address is ikehezekielkelvin@gmail.com tnksThat is what I A̶̲̥̅̊м̣̣̥̇ puting together at the moment.. I hope τ̲̅ȍ finish it soonest.. |
samshoz: @robonski15 :You didn't comment on my post about my tampoline pond?!Tampoulin pond is also good.. U just have to follow the datails I wrote earlier on and u are good to go... 400 juvenile is not bad for a starter, its a graduall process.. |
d.adebayo:I have sent u a mail.. Thanks |

crackdcode: One of the most enlightening write ups I have read on NL.Some people only tell sweet stories but if you are discerning enough, you'll know nothing good comes easy.Thank u very much sir.. |
excelsiorfarm: op if a farmer does not have the resources, he can still do fish farming even without any technological input, but someone that uses an aerator is at an advantage of more healthy fishes, more time if water is extremely polluted b4 they begin to die etc. the bio filter comes in handy when there is challenge of water, drainage to say a few. As oxygen is important to fish farming, many neglect to know that the water temperature you subject your fishes to will determine their growth rateaerating water when dissolved oxygen concentrations are near saturation is wasteful because oxygen transfer and aeration efficiency are very low under those conditions... I once used an earator and I found it very effective especially in nurturing fries... One should take into consideration the water temparature excesive heat deters the growth of the fish... |
theolar: I am following this thread and I must say I enjoyed it . Also recommended it for someone who isn't a member of thisforum. Pls when is the training and the cost implication. Pls send the info to kingroyalnassc@yahoo.coI have sent you a mail.. |
Adeymorla: that's where i bought from. A biofilter is not so necessary but an aerator is an absolute must. Dissolved oxygen levels is critical to fish growth. More D.O faster growth. But I guess even if u have an earator and the water is polluted the earator has no much effect in this situation... I think they should work together... U can't leave one out and expect a good result... |
robonski15: approx 80kgCalculated analysis Crude protein: 85.26 Fats: 20.91 Crude fibre. 20.11 Calcium. 5.71 Phosphorus. 2.50 Energy. 5,928.60 Energy/protein 69.6 With this calculated analysis I must say that its a good one.. Considering the amount of protein and energy derived from it.. Fellow fish farmers if u are seeking for a good feed formulation u can count on this formular to give your fish the best growth and weight... God bless |
excelsiorfarm: what brand of biofilter do u use?continuos flow can give a better result, but a good bio filter, will give a clean, clear water after useAre u saying that there are different bio filters... Is this biofilter plant the same as recirculatory system |
