PoliticsOyo 2015:lessons From Ekiti by Rockyheight(op): 7:42am On Jul 05, 2014
In a democratic dispensation such as ours, it is intrinsically inherent that a political office holder must, at all times, seek to satisfy three major constituencies, particularly when you are a Nigerian governor. These constituencies, in their order of importance, are the electorate, the civil servants and the politicians.

These groups are cardinal to the success or failure of a state  governor. The electorate are important because ultimate power resides with them. They determine if a governor gets elected or gets a second term as the case may be. They are the most important of the groups. The civil servants are the eyes, hands and legs of any government. When not properly handled, they may deliberately go blind, develop withered hands or become crippled to the detriment of a Governor. The politicians are the least of the groups. However, they are the marquee that point the Governors and their achievements to the electorates and make efforts to sustain support for the Governors.

When a Governor cannot adequately meet the needs of these groups, then he has failed without remedy. For a sitting Governor, his term starts counting from day one in office and any mistake made in the first three months can never be corrected.

The recent elections in Ekiti State is a pointer to the assertions above. On assumption of office, Dr Kayode Fayemi committed certain mistakes at the onset of his administration that haunted him at the just-concluded elections. It is surprising that an incumbent could lose an election in such a ridiculous manner. I guess it showed that governance is about implementing policies and programs that have direct positive impact on the people and not making noise on the pages of newspapers and airwaves as the APC administrations in South-West have come to be known for.

Dr Fayemi, on assumption of office, implemented some wrong political moves and policies in his state. Civil servants, particularly teachers, had a raw deal. This group constituted itself into a political quagmire for the Governor for asking them to write an examination known as " Teachers Development Needs Assessment" to test their proficiency.

His excellency also reduced teachers' allowances and increased school fees paid by student of the state university. This gave birth to "No payment of fees, No examination", thereby causing additional burden on the predominantly civil servant and subsistence agrarian state.  Though he tried to make amends as the elections approached, it was too late. The people did not forget these early infractions and he was duly reminded with their votes.

How was it that of the 16 local governments in Ekiti state, Dr Kayode Fayemi, a sitting Governor, could not win a single local government ? Not even the one he hails from. It simply means that he had not impacted the people in anyway and all the achievements we heard about only existed on the pages of newspapers.

As the 2015 elections beckon in Oyo state, are there any lessons for the present administration in the state to learn from the Ekiti scenario ? The answer is yes, considering that there are distinct similarities between the governments of Dr Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state and Senator Isiaka Ajimobi of Oyo state. Both started badly by implementing policies that are not people-friendly. Both offended the major constituencies comprising of the Electorate,Civil Servants and the Politicians. Their "achievements" are mostly on the pages of Newspapers and state-owned media. Senator Isiaka Ajimobi, for instance, has billboards in strategic places all over the state advertising him drinking  pipe-borne water. Curiously, he is the only one who knows where to get potable water in the state.

As there exist a similarity between Dr Fayemi and Senator Isiaka Ajimobi, so also is there a resemblance between Chief Ayodele Fayose and Senator Rasidi Ladoja. Both were able to leave a lasting impression on the hearts of the people eight years ago while in office, both were witch-haunted out of office by the powers that be then, while the people of Ekiti state has shown Fayose that they never forgot him, the people of Oyo state are waiting eagerly to tell Senator Ladoja that his good deeds are ever before them.

And as Dr Fayemi was reminded of his many misdeeds by the people of Ekiti in the last elections, so will Senator Isiaka Ajimobi be duly served his own cup of defeat. If the magnitude of Dr Fayemi's election defeat can be likened to a hurricane, that of Senator Ajimobi will be a Tsunami come 2015.

With the hierachy of APC going about town lobbying the likes of OBJ, IBB, ATIKU and others that have made PDP and Nigeria what it is today, will there really be a change in nigeria, if Pdp members where to empty into APC. Its really sad that all APC is doing is to get pdp members to fill their ranks and at the end of the day nothing will be new if APC were to be in ASO rock. IF GEJ were to decamp to APC now, am sure he will emerge as the Party's presidential candidate. What do you think naira landers

PoliticsEkiti: Confusion As Police, Hoodlums Stop Bamidele’s Rally by Rockyheight(op): 7:01am On Sep 20, 2013
Commercial and vehicular activities were paralysed in some parts of Ado Ekiti on Thursday as some hoodlums turned the streets of the state capital to a war front in order to stop a campaign rally by a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele.

Bamidele, a former information commissioner in Lagos State, who represents Ekiti Central Federal Constituency 1 in the National Assembly, was billed to publicly declare his governorship ambition in the state on Thursday.

The hoodlums took to the streets as early as 7am, barricading the Ajebandele Road and the Ajilosun area up to Okeyinmi Junction in Ado Ekiti.

The group, led by the state Chairman, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, Mr. Rotimi  Olabiwonu, carried dangerous weapons like guns, cutlasses and clubs as they drove dangerously around town in a convoy.

A detachment of policemen from the state police command arrived the scene later to disperse Bamidele’s supporters from holding the rally.

PoliticsBlame Tinubu For S'west Political Woes - Sarumi by Rockyheight(op): 9:00am On Sep 03, 2013
A former member of the House of Representatives, Tayo Sarumi, has said former Lagos State Governor, Bola Tinubu, should be blamed for the lesser role that the South West is playing at the centre of Nigerian politics.

Sarumi, who represented Ibadan North Federal Constituency between 2003 and 2007, said the plan to relegate the South West in the composition of government at the centre was hatched shortly before former President Olusegun Obasanjo left government in 2007.

He said, "When Obasanjo was about to leave, I had a reliable information that the only position that was coming to the South West was the Peoples Democratic Party chairmanship slot and that no position was coming to us from the three arms of government.

"I wrote letters to all the South West governors where I addressed the issue. I made them realise that it would be a huge political loss if the South West was not given any position in government. My position pitted me against Obasanjo but in a meeting that took place in Ota, it was raised again and it was concluded that a Yoruba lawmaker should be the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

"That was how Dimeji Bankole presided over the House until 2011. But there was a problem when the South West representatives in the house failed to hold on to their position after Bankole. Largely controlled by former ACN party, which is now All Progressives Congress, the members took directive from the party leader, Tinubu, and settled for Mohammed Tambuwal."

Sarumi noted that a dangerous trend was gradually creeping into the South West politics, which could alienate it from the Federal Government set up and affect its development.

He said, "Today, the Yoruba interest is not protected because we don't have anyone occupying any key position in the present government. We have people occupying ministerial positions but we deserve better stake in this government. ACN has more representatives in the legislative houses from the South West but they have not represented us well by offering what belonged to us to someone else.

"My concern now is that the Yorubas are now taking the back stage. If a major zone in a nation like Nigeria is not strongly represented in the executive and legislative arms of the government, then that zone is losing its relevance in the nation's polity."

PoliticsFashola Seals Off Kalu’s House by Rockyheight(op): 7:20am On Aug 14, 2013
Lagos State government yesterday sealed off a property belonging to former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, in Park View Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos. This is coming on the heels of Kalu’s condemnation of Lagos government’s deportation of 72 residents of the state, mainly South Easterners, to Onitsha, Anambra State.
Kalu had, after the deportation, told Fashola to apologise to the Igbo for the deportation and threatened to drag him to court if he failed to do so. Daily Sun gathered that officials of Lagos State swooped on the Park View property and placed a seal on it. No reason was given for the action.

Speaking on what happened, Special Adviser (Media) to Kalu, Mr. Emeka Obasi, said the sealing off of the former governor’s property was done as a revenge for his criticism of the Lagos government’s deportation of Igbo and others.

Obasi said the property had been there for several years, wondering why it’s after Kalu criticised Fashola over the deportation issue, that the government sealed it off.

He stated: “Why is it that it is now that the property is being sealed, barely two weeks after my boss disagreed with the action of Fashola? We maintain our stand and this will not distract us from fighting for the people.

“The action of the Lagos State Government remains unconstitutional because every citizen of Nigeria has a right to live in any part of the country.

“Fashola should remember that the Igbo community constitutes about 35 per cent of registered voters in Lagos State and they should be treated like they matter in the scheme of things.”

Meanwhile, the state government said in a statement yesterday, that “the property was destrained pursuant to Section 40 of the Revenue Administration Law of Lagos State for failure to pay the statutory annual land use charge.”

It was added that when the issue was brought to the attention of Governor Fashola yesterday evening, he directed the agency to unseal the property and that 14 days grace period be given to Kalu to pay the said charge. Sunnewspaper
FamilyThree Men Rape 14-year-old, Brand Her A Witch by Rockyheight(op): 7:12am On Aug 14, 2013
A 24-year-old patent medicine dealer, Ijezie Chidiebere, and two other men have been arraigned before the Ebute Meta Magistrate's Court for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl.

The incident was said to have taken place on August 3, 2013  in Orile-Iganmu, Lagos State.

The police said Chidiebere and the other suspects (Okechukwu Ezea, 25 and Chikezie Ejesi, 25) detained the victim in Chidiebere's shop where they violated her "and in the process, destroyed her hymen."

To cover their action, they allegedly poured a liquid substance suspected to be olive oil on her while pretending to be clerics.

They were said to have told some people that had gathered that the girl was a witch, who needed urgent spiritual deliverance.

Some of the people, who were not convinced, alerted   policemen who arrested the trio.

The three men were arraigned on four counts of felony, rape and false representation.

The charges read in part, "That you, Ijezie Chidiebere,m, Okechukewu Ezea, m, Chikezie Ejesi,m and others now at large on  August 3, 2013, at 9pm at No 8, Kekere-Ekun Street, Orile-Iganmu in the Lagos Magisterial District did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit defilement and administering of noxious substance."

The prosecutor, Sergeant Qasim Adams, said the offences were punishable under Sections 409, 137,166(1)(D) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State Nigeria 2011 and Section 247(b) of the Criminal Code of Law of Cap 'C38' Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004.

The men pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

The magistrate, Mr. K.O Ogundare, admitted the defendants to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties each in like sum.

He also instructed the police to transfer the matter to the Surulere Family Court where it would receive proper attention as the court lacked the jurisdiction to try the case.

The matter was adjourned till September 24.

Policeman caught on camera demanding bribe dismissed
2013-08-07 23:00:56

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed a police sergeant, Chris Omeleze, who was caught on video camera demanding a bribe of  N25,000 from a motorist.

In the video footage, made available to our correspondent, an unidentified male motorist could be heard pleading with Omeleze to accept N2,000 for a traffic offence, but the sergeant refused.

The sergeant, who was on the passenger seat, placed a call to his superior on the telephone, saying the motorist's car must be impounded for refusing to "cooperate."

The policeman, who is attached to the State Traffic Division, Ikeja, was arrested on Tuesday after the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, saw the video which went viral on the Internet.

It was learnt that the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, ordered that the sergeant should face an orderly room trial.

Our correspondent was told that a panel of policemen found the sergeant guilty of misconduct and recommended him for dismissal which the CP approved immediately.

The sergeant, however, said his ordeal was the handiwork of the devil.

Omeleze, with Force number, 192954, was given a dressing down at the CP's office on Wednesday.

He said, "I regret the incident, I have  served in the police for 21 years."

Motorists had been complaining about extortion by operatives of STD, especially along Obafemi Awolowo Way, Ikeja.

The state command's Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said the police were disappointed with the sergeant's unprofessional behaviour.

Braide said members of the public should cultivate the habit of reporting such cases of extortion to the police backed with evidence. She added that such evidence would help police authorities to flush out bad eggs from the force.

She said, "The video was well detailed and we were able to locate the sergeant. The video was enough evidence and after facing an orderly room trial, he was dismissed.

"The police will not condone such behaviour and members of the public are advised to always report such cases."Punch newspaper

ousewife bites maid’s private parts

August 3, 2013 • By Our Reporter
From EMMANUEL UZOR, Onitsha

Emotion flowed like river at the Onitsha Chief Magistrate Court yesterday when Chiamaka (other names withheld), a mother of two, was arraigned by the police for savagely biting her  nine-year-old maid, including her private part. This happened in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State.

Chiamaka, who hails from Eziagu in Enugu State, was arraigned in suit number MO/38/2013 for allegedly inflicting bodily harm on her maid, Nnenna Nwafor, on  July 25 when she allegedly used dangerous weapons and her teeth to inflict injuries on the girl.

The Police Prosecution counsel, Mr. Uwakwe Okoji, told the court that the suspect, a mother of two in her mid- 20s, committed the crime on July 25, 2013 at No 7 Udemba Street, Woliwo Onitsha, where she allegedly gave her maid bites all over the body including her private part.

He described the act as not only evil, but also one of man’s inhumanity to man. He equally told the court that  the husband of the suspect had since sent her out of his house because of the act, while praying the court to look into the matter with a view to bringing the suspect to justice.

Widow and mother of the victim, Mrs. Nwafor,  told the court amidst tears of how her daughter was battered by her mistress with bites, including her virgina; adding that, since then, the family has been passing through difficult times attending to the victim medically.

“I am a widow; I had challenges raising my children after my husband died. It was  the difficulty that made meI  to send my daughter to live with Chiamaka. I never knew that the injuries she inflicted on her were as serious as this until when she removed her pant and I noticed that she had a very serious cut in her private part. There are also other bite scars on her face, buttocks and, in fact, all over her body. I can’t really understand this type of punishment meted out to an innocent girl,” she said, sobbing.

The victim, Nnenna, while narrating her ordeal to Saturday Sun after the court session, painted a gory picture of what she passed through in the hands of her mistress. She said that on several occasions, her mistress had poured hot water on her, and attacked her with  dangerous weapons on some other occasions.

She further disclosed how her mistress forced her down and ordered her to open her legs before biting her severally in her private part, after inflicting same on her buttocks and other parts of her body.

The presiding Magistrate, Mr. M A Okonkwo, said he was dumbfounded over the incident, adding that he never believed that a woman, who had passed through pains of childbirth, could inflict this type of injuries on a daughter of a fellow woman and ordered the suspect to be remanded in prison custody.

1. Communication was made between both Lagos and Anambra State governments.
2. Number of persons involved were 14.
3. No date was set for the repatriation or arrangement concluded.
4. Over 70 persons were dumped at bridgehead, Onitsha, their alleged family homes.
5. They were dumped in the middle of the night with no one there to receive them.
6. A crime was committed by Lagos State government against the citizens of Nigeria.

If you support the deportation of persons in the middle of the night many of whom are not from Anambra State, leaving them to their own fate, then I put a curse on you.
