Politics › Re: Remembering My War Hero – Col Joe ‘hannibal’ Achuzia(air Raid) By Uche Anyanwagu by Roger3D(m): 7:35pm On May 31, 2018 |
OyiboUgbo04: The sun shall surely rise again In her own land and with no pain Her fallen ones shall be the seed On her soil in word and deed . . . As I sit at home today to reflect on the Biafran genocide, the name of Colonel Joe ‘Hannibal’ Achuzia (Air Raid) comes to mind. Having read much of the genocide (war), I have adored him as My War Hero. . . Recently on someone’s Facebook wall, I saw a very instructive and touchy quote. It stated that there are no war heroes or heroes in a war. Rather, heroes are those who prevent the war from happening. . . Sincerely, I do appreciate that in its entirety. But if the Biafran genocide/war would have been prevented is a debatable story for another day. . . I sadly learnt in February that Col Joe Achuzia had passed on. I knew two days after and was deeply grieved by his loss – though he died at a ripe age of almost 90. . . Col “Air Raid” hailed from Asaba in Delta state but was born in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. Scarcely reported, he was in the Nigerian Army before the civil war broke out in 1967. . . He was to join the Biafran army, promoted to a Major, and made the Commander of the Biafran 11th Battalion. He was a great military strategist who was called upon at time of dire needs to salvage his people. . . His 11th Battalion was called upon to ward off the advancing Nigerian forces at Onitsha, and later, Abakaliki – a feat he achieved with precision. When Port Harcourt and Owerri fell, his acts of bravery recaptured these cities. . . With sheer determination and almost bare hands, Col Achuzia moved on with a patriotic zeal and an infectious inspiration. His presence and tact were dramatic and catastrophically moving as the “Air Raid” he was later nicknamed. . . He would later describe his shock on learning that he was nicknamed “Air Raid” on his way back from Unwana, Afikpo. . . As soldiers saw and hailed him “Air Raid”, people panicked and took cover thinking it was the usual air strikes of the Nigerian government. . . In panic too, he came out to see where the plane was coming from, only to be told of his nickname and the reason for the fright and flight. In his own words – “it was a sobering experience for me”. . . In his last memoir, “There was a Country”, Achebe described him as “…one of the most complicated, some say eccentric characters of the war… “no-nonsense, disciplined, tactical and strategic military genius”, . …highly respected, if not feared by the Nigerian Federal forces for his mastery of guerrilla warfare and for giving them “run for their money” on the battlefield…” (page 218). . . Col Achuzia was “astutely unrepentant for his role in the Nigerian-Biafran war, even as he espoused his strong belief in a “one, united Nigeria, where EQUITY, JUSTICE, FAIRNESS and MUTUAL RESPECT for one another are unreservedly operational at all levels of governance and social interactions” (page 310) . . Col “Air Raid” later became the Secretary-General of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo where he was grew an enviable “reputation for his frankness in public statements and passion with which he canvassed the Igbo position…” . . He held the Chieftaincy title of IKEMBA of Asaba. He passed on peacefully with a smile on February 26 at FMC Asaba. . . “Air Raid” will be missed and the memories of his bravery forever etched in our hearts. . . #May30 #Biafra #Weremember
