They think Osun is poor because of the little allocation they receive but they don't know it's because of the loans Aregbe took to build infrastructures in the state that the FG is paying back. There are more infrastructure construction in Osun than any of the SE state.

More than half of Osun Fed allocation is being used to settle debt. The governor is still achieving with what is left.

The next myth to be busted is that 3 million Igbos died in the war.
The reality is that the number is unknown and the 3 million figure has no basis.
In fact I am not even sure that any single town or village has put forward any figure whether factual or estimated

It was 2M. People died on both sides although Igbos suffer the most

How many people can save up to £10,000 in 1967? What was the budget of the country or regions at that time? The yearly salary of senior civil servants at that time was far less than £1,000. Per capita gdp was about £200, it will the height of conjecture to assume £20 was small money at that time.

And was the Nigerian government obliged to give Ibo adults any money? They got paid what was a full month wage for rebelling against the country. Rather than aknowledge that as an act of kindness and magnanimity, you use that to sneer and heap opprobrium on those who were considerate enough to do that. What would you lot have done or not done if only £0 was handed over to ibo adults?

10,000pounds will buy 20 Peogeot's brand new cars in 1970.

Were they going to carry it on their heads? There's little doubt the elites and middle class were wrecked after the war. The shortage of capital was one of the reasons the indigenization of foreign firms/industries worked overwhelmingly in favour of Yorubas immediately after the civil war: a massive gap which developed at the time that we've been trying to bridge ever since to some degree of success, but still ultimately falling short.

I'm not sure what the point of this thread is really. Those who couldn't prove they had deposits in banks before the war got nothing and had to start from scratch. My dad was an example. This group was the majority. The minority who could prove they did got £20. It would be silly in the extreme to believe this covered what they had lost.

Common, don't go there.

We built our own future.

Between 1954 and1966, we had built enough industrial estates all over the Western region to dwarf whatever advantage Igbos thought they had over us while cheating us out of employment in the civil service and the few companies they dominated at the time. We introduced free education for our people earlier, built University of Ife.

We played fairly. We did not attempt to cheat on other ethnic groups like the Igbos were doing to us.

War or no war. we were clearly ahead of the Igbos in every field of human endeavor in1966.

You people wanted FG to pay what it did not owe. It was ACB that owed you people not FG. You people bankrupted ACB with mass withdrawals and looting upon your departure to the east.

You should be grateful for FGs help. What if they had decided not to give anything. What would you people have done.

Why do Igbo people keep deluding themselves that everybody hate them.

It is this same manner Igbo came to Lagos as tenants and became landlords. There is no narrative, even in motion pictures, that can explain the rapid recovery of Ndigbo.

The 20 pounds policy was a good gesture of goodwill and an attempt at helping Igbos get back their life. That 20 pounds would be worth around N600K today. It played a big role in helping Igbos to recover economically.

It was like grants given to Germany and the rest of europe which enabled their economies to recover after the WWII.

it hurts to see that Igbos have never shown appreciation for these.

The more Igbos keep the bitterness of the civil war alive, the worse it would get for them in this country.

Remember that Igbos laced different places with bombs in Lagos before their departure for the east. Two popular cinema houses were bombed in Lagos killing Yoruba people, when the issue was actually between them and the northerners. A car bomb was detected in Obalende meant to kill our people. It was quickly defused.

We have since forgiven our Igbo brothers and sisters and moved on. Why won't Igbos do the same.

The caption of your post shows how deep in ignorance you have lived. Not every Igbo person received 20 pounds from federal government. The few that received the meager 20 pounds were the lucky ones who were able to show they had more than 20 pounds in the banks in Nigeria before the outbreak of the war. Mere ambition to balance things up in the zoo called Nigeria has set some goons into a tailspin of idiocy.

The reason Igbos are bitter today is because they are not paying enough attention to the development of their region.

When a people keep abandoning their own region for others, that region is bound to suffer.

An example is Mexico. All their best brains are in America.

Pls, tell us how Igbos multiply the £20 to what they have today if that was all you get from Nigeria govt?

They tried to make it sound as if £20 was only given to few Igbos, how did you manage to rebuild the whole East with £20?

Can we give the equivalent of that money(#200,000) to few Igbos today to rebuild a whole village within a space of 10years?

Nigerians are smarter than all this propaganda

Awolowo changed Nigerian currency when Ojukwu went to CBN in Benin and robbed that Bank in broad daylight.

Igbos should stop lying

FG started rebuilding the Eastern part of Nigeria back after the war with massive allocation.

Yakubu Gowon even said it few days ago that they started pumping money to the East after the war sonas to rebuild it back.

But children of hate just lying through their teeth that they build the entire region with £20.

Does it make any sense?

Let them keep wallowing in grandeur of self delusion.

Igbos can continue in victimhood mentality. It will never achieve anything for them.

Igbos who had no money in the banks got 0 pounds, while Igbos who had millions got only 20 pounds after the war.

Another lie!

There were thousandnaires in Nigeria at the time. No millionaires. The value of our currency was very high at the time.

A brand new car that would cost you N50million today goes for less than 500pounds then.

FG gave Igbos the money, but paid through banks.

Igbo people who have accounts with other banks apart from ACB got full payments provided they have their documents.

ACB got bankrupted when Igbos started making mass withdrawals before leaving for the east.

The 20 pounds was for people who had biafra pounds in their bank accounts....
The strategy was to mop up the biafra currency in circulation...
The policy was to give 20 pounds to anybody who has biafra pounds in his bank accounts irrespective of the amount....
It doesn't matter if it's 1 million or just 100 biafra pounds....
So long u can prove u have biafra pounds in your bank account, the whole amount will be exchanged for 20 nigerian pounds....
Even if its one biafra pound...
Of course the igbos had hoped their biafran pounds will be exchanged for the nigerian currency at a fixed n reasonable rate....
Thus it's understandable if they were disappointed at the policy...
But the policy has nothing to do with those holding the nigerian pounds....
Let's not forget some igbos stayed back in Lagos during biafra....
Thus it would have been stupid if FG started confiscating bank accounts with ibo names...
Pls let's be enlightened....

The FG did not use 20 pounds policy to mop up Biafrian pounds. That is not correct.

It was an effort by Government to help Igbos who had accounts with the looted and bankrupted African Continental Bank to get something back with which to start afresh.

It was also an attempt at reconciliation. Unfortunately, they never appreciated it.

20pounds at 1970 is more than N600,000 naira of today.

I wish every Igbo person reading this will ask their parents and grandparents what 20 pounds was like then.

Have you noticed when someone comes from the east to the west for the first time. The look of suppressed anger or fear.

Over the years as a child, I've wondered why. Now I know. Anger at or fear of Yoruba people because of what they have been told.

They later get over it when they find out, we are not the dangerous people they perceive us to be when they were being fed lies about us back at home.

The bitter truth is that Yorubas have no excuse for their lack of development. And please don't even mention Lagos because Nigerian government and Nigerians jointly developed that piece of land. You can go into political mud slinging but I am not interested in that.

In 1970 after the war the Nigerian government generally gave £20 of Nigerian money to every eligible adult but no one has ever done the math.

Let us assume their were one million of them =£20million Nigerian

We know that the Nigerian pound exchanged for £2 pounds sterling in 1970 so
that would be £40 million . What would that be worth today

according to this inflation calculator

https://www.moneysorter.co.uk/calculator_inflation2.html
it would be
£432612859. Sterling
Not sure what sterling is doing these days but @ 475

that is

205491108025 Naira

200 billion

Assuming it was 1 million people that received the money. No one has ever told us how many did but I think it could be double that.

For a country to pay that out immediately after a war of such devastation is a huge feat considering that Nigeria was not even a major oil exporter in1970 and in 1970 oil prices were under $4 which when adjusted for inflation in today's money is $21.

It is a testament to the prudent financial management of Papa Awo who also kept the allocation of East Central state for 3 years and paid it all after the war

But they are not grateful and feel entitled to that payment. What have we done for the NE . Imagine finding 200 billion to give them today when oil prices in real terms are 3 X what they were in 1970

The standard of living was much lower. Let me put it in Perspective our standard of living then, There was no Lagos Ibadan Expressway. No East -West Road. PH to Aba was a single carriage way.The Air assault camp was the main airport in PH Omagwa airport did not exist. There was nothing like presidential jet. Where were the airports?
The country was broke with very little compared to today but still gave generously in the spirit or sacrifice and reconciliation

20pounds will feed you for 6 months at that time. People who condemn the government for paying Biafrans that amount are ingrates.

By the way, the money was paid out of government earnings as Ojukwu raided Africa Continental Bank rendering it bankrupt at the onset of the War.

People should stop twisting history. We know what happened.

I am very fair to all concerned.

You distort history with that kind of fictitious narrative.

Yes it was a bad war but why must everything be lies.

Your people din not suffer abandon property in Lagos. Many got their property back. Some got their rent collected and delivered to them intact. They were welcomed back into Lagos with open arms. The truth is Yorubas could have been hostile and uncooperative especially in Lagos. They were not.
Igbos did not lose everything that is just fiction. Why must you tell all these lies. I don't know how old you were at the end of the war. Awo put in a lot of money into ACB. A man called Ukpabi Asika was given a lot of resources too .The other thing to bear in mind is Yoruba men typically are not traders and so the trading sector was open with little competition for those into trading. Those that were teachers got jobs all over the SW.

That £20 that you try to make look small was when a loaf of bread was 1 penny
Do you know there was NOTHING like a £20 note

The HIGHEST NOTE WAS £5

In today's terms it is 200000 .It is not a lot but for goverment to pay it out after a war is not easy.

What has government done for IDPs in the NE?

I challenge any Igbo to controvert this.

One thing I know in life is that, when someone has been repeatedly fed with the wrong information for so long, it becomes practically almost impossible to believe the truth when that person eventually finds it.

It is from that money that we (those who are privileged to receive it) started our whole life again and today SE is competing with with other regions that sees no war.

Op just be very fair to Igbos.

Thanks.

The same lies I've had everywhere - radio, television, newspapers. Name it.

It is on record that Awolowo saved all Federal allocations to the Eastern region throughout the 3 years of the gruelling civil war, and handed it over to their political leaders after the war who wasted it, because they will not hold their leaders accountable.

The same thing is still happening today. Igbos are not holding their leaders accountable but are quick to cry marginalized.

Thank you for this post.

We Yorubas have been the most kind to the Igbos of all ethnic groups in Nigeria, yet they are always looking for ways to malign us and cast aspersions on our character before the world.

It was on record that ACB, the bank with which most Igbos save their money's was bankrupted upon their leaving for the east.

Also, it took the intervention of Awolowo for the 20 pounds per person to be approved by the then military government.

It is only in Nigeria that you hear of such thing happening, that a government pays the others side like that after a war.
