Awesome’ draw show on track Posted: 2008-11-21 11:28 Fifa Confederations Cup excitement will hit fever pitch in South Africa tomorrow as the country prepares to host six continental football champions and world champions Italy for the draw that is being held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Coaches and representatives from the eight participating teams will be in Johannesburg, to learn their fate for the tournament, which will take place from June 14-28 next year in four cities across South Africa. “Everything is going well here, we are on schedule and hope the draw will attract a lot of attention and further promote the Fifa Confederations Cup,” says Fifa’s OC Event Manager Tim Cook. One aspect that is definitely on track is the volunteer programme, which called on South Africans to volunteer their services for next year’s event. The volunteers, an integral part of the draw, have been trained in their various tasks for the weekend and are already busy ahead of the event. For many it is a wonderful opportunity to be able to contribute in some way to an important event for the country and to play a very special part of the Fifa Confederations Cup. “I wish I could be even more involved. For me it is all about creating a great picture of South Africa for the outside world. It is such a big event that is very important for our country and working on this is a dream come true,” remarked Bonginkosi Mthimunye, a freelance actor from Johannesburg who is a media volunteer for the draw. As the volunteers were taken through the whole process, the thorough preparations for tomorrow’s draw became evident. Fifa and the OC’s media operations department have been preparing for the influx of local and international journalists who will cover the draw, taking media volunteers through the media areas at the venue and explaining the process involved in servicing the media’s requirements. The volunteers were amazed at the intricate detail involved in putting together the event and excited to be part of it. Everything has to be planned, from ensuring good quality wireless internet and making sure translators are provided, to providing adequate facilities for the camera crews and even ensuring that the media had a place to put up their feet and grab something to eat at any given time. Although Cook seems happy with the preparations he is well aware that this is just the beginning, with the goal very much the 2010 Fifa World Cup ultimately. “It is only the first step in the process but the draw show is going to be awesome,” he adds. |
All the stadiums are on track on schedule and on time.World cup in South Africa will be a success

Zito gets his clearance Submitted: 0 days ago Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed that their new Nigerian striker Zito Ogbonna is available for selection when they take on Wits tomorrow evening at Bidvest stadium. He missed the Soweto derby, because his former Romanian club had failed to issue the clearance, but now the papers have arrived and with Jose Torrealba doubtful for tomorrow’s clash due to back pain, Zito could be thrown in the deep end. Kaizer Chiefs have scored 10 goals in eight league games this season, which means Zito comes in at a time when there is pressure for Chiefs to start hitting the back of the net consistently |

Bafana win Mandela Challenge Posted: 2008-11-19 22:44 South Africa recorded a fourth straight win with a pulsating 3-2 victory over Cameroon in a Nelson Mandela Challenge match at Olympia Park on Wednesday night. The home side raced into a 2-0 lead after a double strike from the excellent Teko Modise, but were then penned back by goals from Ngom Kome and Somen Tehoi. The prolific Bernard Parker gave the home side the win with eight minutes remaining, however. Bafana could even afford to miss a late penalty as Modise saw his effort saved by goalkeeper Carlos Kameni. It would have been the first time a South African player had scored three since Benni McCarthy netted four against Namibia at the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations. Bafana lined up with the same side that beat Ghana in Bloemfontein on October 15, bar goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune replacing Bryan Baloyi. And they were ahead after just six minutes thanks to a thunderous drive from Modise. Matthew Booth released Siphiwe Tshabalala down the left and although the Kaizer Chiefs man was dispossessed, the poor clearance found Modise on the edge of the area and he hit the ball first-time past a helpless Kameni in the visitors’ goal. Modise made it 2-0 on 23 minutes after an attempted one-two fell kindly for him with a clear run on goal. The Orlando Pirates man showed great composure as he steamed into the area and placed the ball past Kameni. But the two-goal advantage lased just four minutes as the excellent Kome hit back with a direct free-kick from 25-yards. Kome was causing all sorts of problems for the home side and he went close with a header at the back post that looked to have Khune beaten, but found the side-netting rather than the goal. But it was a warning to Bafana about the visitors’ aerial presence and after Modise had again gone close with a 30-yarder that Kameni was forced to save, Somen Tehoi rose highest from Kome’s left-sided free-kick to head Cameroon level. The physical nature of the Cameroonians game finally took its toll as Siyabonga Nkosi was forced to leave the field after a stamp off the ball and was replaced by Parker on 39 minutes. The frustration of the South Africans was evident and Benni McCarthy received a yellow card for dissent from referee Cornelius Mwanza when he complained about the foul count mounting against the away side. Katlego Mphela replaced McCarthy at halftime as Macbeth Sibaya forced a good low save from Kameni in the opening seconds of the second period. Mpehla should have done better on 49 minutes when he failed to meet Tshabalala’s corner at the near-post. And just minutes later, brilliant work down the left from Tshabalala again found Mphela, but this time the striker’s shot was straight at Kameni. The industrious Tshabalala then warmed the palms of Kameni from 30-yards but the keeper saved comfortably. Cameroon brought on Achille Webo for Albert Meyoung on 52 minutes and Khune had to make a smart save from the new man straight away as his near-post header looked goal-bound. The visitors made a second change on 58 minutes as Guy Stephane replaced Jean Makoun. Augustine Gilles received a yellow card on 61 minutes for dissent, but Modise could not make good use of the free-kick that had originated from the foul just seconds earlier. Cameroon made a third change when they brought on Frank Songo’o for Somen Tehoi on 73 minutes, while the unlucky Mphela was forced off the field with a head injury at the same time to be replaced by Thulasizwe Mbuyane. Parker scored the winner on 82 minutes after Mbuyane’s shot was only parried away by Kameni, capitalising on his own good work in creating the initial opportunity for the Pirates man with some strong play to hold off two defenders. Bafana made a final change on 84 minutes when Kagiso Dikgacoi replaced Sibaya. Modise then missed a late penalty after he was brought down in the area himself, but Kameni saved his spot-kick to miss out on what would have been a treasured hat-trick. |

Miriam was born in Johannesburg. As a young girl of thirteen, she entered a talent show at a missionary school and walked off with the first prize. She was often invited to sing at weddings, and her popularity grew in leaps and bounds as more and more people became dazzled by her talent. In 1952 she was chosen to sing for The Manhattan Brothers and toured South Africa with them. As early as 1956, she wrote and released the song "Pata Pata". She received invitations to visit Europe and America, where she came to the attention of Harry Belafonte and Steve Allen and was capitulated to stardom. 1959 saw her becoming the first South African to win a Grammy award for the album 'An Evening with Harry Belafonte & Miriam Makeba'. Miriam became an exile in 1960 when South Africa banned her from returning to her birth country - she was deemed to be too dangerous and revolutionary - this was after she had appeared in an anti-apartheid documentary, entitled "Come Back Africa", and this upset the then white apartheid government of South Africa. Miriam only returned to South Africa thirty years later. In 1967, more than ten years after she wrote the song, "Pata Pata" was released in the United States and became a hit worldwide. It has since been re-recorded by numerous international artists. Miriam was a darling of the American public, but they turned against her when she married the radical black activist, Stokely Carmichael, in 1968. Once again, she was at the receiving end of a dissatisfied and disgruntled country. Although the United States never banned her, her US concerts and recording contracts were suddenly cancelled. She moved back to Africa, this time to Guinea where she was welcomed with open arms. Miriam continued to record songs and toured intensively. She was well respected by the government of Guinea and was asked to address the United Nations General Assembly as a Guinean delegate. She twice addressed the General Assembly, speaking out against the evils of apartheid. Although always regarding herself as a singer and not as a politician, Miriam's fearless humanitarianism has earned her many International awards, including the 1986 Dag Hammerskjold Peace Prize and the UNESCO Grand Prix du Conseil International de la Musique. Makeba is also known for having inspired an enduring fashion in the 60's when the slogan "black is beautiful" was launched: She was received by such world leaders as Hailé Selassie, Fidel Castro, John F. Kennedy and François Mitterrand. She has toured with singers such as Paul Simon, Nina Simone, Hugh Masekela and Dizzy Gillepsie. The ban on her records was lifted in South Africa in 1988 and she returned to her homeland in December 1990. Four years later she started a charity project to raise funds to protect women in South Africa. Her first concert in South Africa (1991) was a huge success and this was a prelude for a world-wide tour which included the USA and Europe. She has released over thirty albums over the years, and her powerful and distinctive voice retains the clarity and range that enable it to be both forceful as a protest march and as poignant as an African lullaby. Miriam is MamaAfrica, a lady with a special touch. She has weathered many storms in her life, including several car accidents, a plane crash and even cancer. She remains as active in her latter years as she did as a young girl with stars in her eyes. Her exceptional personal and artistic profile is part of the history of this century, all adding to the dramatic elements of an extraordinary life, making Miriam Makeba a living legend. May your soul rest in peace daughter of Africa, our sister, friend and mother.Robala ka kgotso.

Thanda Royal Zulu teenage Nigerian winger Felix Obada believes the week-long trial stint that he and in-form teammate Bernard Parker spent at Swedish Allsvenskan giants Malmo IF was vital to the progression of his career. Obada spent a week in Sweden coming on as a ‘test player’ substitute in the club’s Under-21 match against IFK Norrkoping. “I know that it was the first time that I was overseas for trials, but I think I made a contribution and learnt some things. They play football at a fast pace with more technique,” says Obada. The Nigerian, whose wizardry down the wing has made people sit up and take notice, says his focus is on Thanda as he awaits word from Malmo. “I haven’t heard anything from the Swedes with regards to where I stand. There is absolutely nothing that has been communicated to me, so I am concentrating on what my mind has always been on and that is to work hard for Thanda. I just want to continue making a good contribution here,” says Obada. The 19-year-old has been an exciting revelation on the wing for Thanda since he arrived at the beginning of the year from Kwara United.

Michel waits on work permit Posted: 2008-11-10 08:53 Mamelodi Sundowns’ new French coach Henri Michel is expected to accompany the Brazilians when they travel to Cape Town for their mid-week Absa Premiership clash against Santos on Wednesday. Michel, who was introduced to his new squad at the weekend after arriving back in South Africa, is unlikely to take a visible role in the proceedings as he is still awaiting his work permit to be processed. Reports say that the former Ivory Coast and Morocco coach will also use his own team of a fitness trainer and assistant coach. This will leave under-fire Trott Moloto with the unenviable task of facing the People’s Team on their home ground on Wednesday evening at Athlone Stadium in what is forecast to be typical windy Cape conditions. Coach David Bright’s team will have to start putting the pieces together after suffering heavy defeats at the hands of Platinum Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic if they are to make any impression on the Brazilians who continue to improve towards the top of the table. The likes of Benedict Vilakazi, Collins Mbesuma, Koketso Mmotong, Katlego Mphela, Dario Monterio (Sundowns Player of the Month for October) and Lerato Chabangu are players that know how to seize on any mistake and put the ball in the back of the net and they will definitely be out to impress Michel. Further good news for the visitors is that Surprise Moriri has started full training and will be available for selection when we play against Santos

South African singer Miriam Makeba has died aged 76 after being taken ill near the southern Italian town of Caserta following a concert, ANSA news agency reported Monday. She died overnight after taking part in a concert for Roberto Saviano, a writer threatened with death by the Mafia, the Italian agency said. Miriam Makeba, known as “Mama Africa", was the legendary voice of the African continent who became a symbol of the fight against apartheid in her home country. She died just after having sung for half an hour for the young author of “Gomorrah” at Castel Volturno near Naples along with other singers and artistes. She was taken ill and was quickly taken to a clinic in Castel Volturno where she died of a heart attack, ANSA said. Miriam Makeba was born in Johannesburg on March 4, 1932. She made an international farewell tour in 2005. Born from a Swazi mother and Xhosa father, Makeba captured international attention as vocalist for the South African group, The Manhattan Brothers, while they toured the United States in 1959. The following year, when she wanted to return home to bury her mother, the apartheid state revoked her citizenship and later also banned her music. As a result she spent 31 years in exile, living in the United States and later in Guinea. She became the first black African woman to receive a Grammy Award which she shared with folk singer Harry Belafonte in 1965. Two years later her fame sky-rocketed with the recording of the all-time hit “Pata Pata” (Xhosa for “touch, touch” describing a township dance) although she unknowingly signed away all royalties on the song. She hit an all-time low in 1985 when her only daughter, Bongi, died aged 36 from complications from a miscarriage. Makeba did not have money to buy a coffin for Bongi, and buried her alone barring a handful of journalists covering the funeral. But she picked herself up again, as she did many times before, like when her father died at a young age, or when she recovered from cervix cancer, or her many unhappy relationships, or unfounded rumours of alcoholism, according to her biography. She returned to South Africa in the 1990s after Mandela was released from prison but it took a cash-strapped Makeba six years to find someone in the local recording industry to produce a record with her. She since released “Homeland” which contains a song describing her joy to be back home after the many years in exile in which she spoke out against apartheid and testified twice before the United Nations. “I kept my culture. I kept the music of my roots. Through my music I became this voice and image of Africa and the people without even realising,” she said in her biography.

Helsingborg to come to South Africa in March Submitted: 0 days ago Farouk Khan has informed the Siya crew that Swedish giants Helsingborg are set to tour South Africa in March as they prepare for their season. They are looking to organise a couple of friendly games against PSL clubs and will more than likely also look at some local talent considering how well young May Mahlangu has done for them. At this stage it is not known whether Jabu Mahlangu will sign a contract with them and travel back to Sweden when they leave, but word is they are very impressed with what Mahlangu achieved in a short space of time at Swedish third division club Osters. Khan says that Swedish superstar and former Barcelona and Manchester United player Henrik Larsson, who is reportedly a big fan of Jabu Mahlangu, will be coming out with the team. |
Chiefs assess young Nigerian Ibeh Posted: 2008-11-06 20:54 Kaizer Chiefs’ struggle to find a strike partner for their current marksman, Venezuelan Jose Torrealba could be coming to an end with the news that coach Muhsin Ertugral and the Amakhosi technical team are looking at a Nigerian. Known in vast West African nation as John Ike Ibeh, the player who has being assessed at Naturena is also known as ‘Victor’ Ibeh and has travelled extensively. KickOff.com has established that the 22-year-old, who also holds Spanish citizen, was last at Romania’s UT Arad, who were relegated to that country’s Second Division at the end of last season. Ibeh, who played in the midfield last season, scored only one goal for his club but had a clean record, not picking up a single card. The forward, who is physically stocky like Torrealba, is being touted as a good finisher and is on record as having played for Hapoel Tel Aviv in Israel. Unconfirmed reports have it that Ibeh has already signed a three-year deal and will be unveiled as soon as his papers arrive. |

shilling:@Shilling I aggree with you that xeno is not good and it must be stamped out,but saying South Africans are lazy?it shows the kind of attitude people/foreigner have when they arrive in the country,if you've been to South you will notice that most of our infrustrures where build during apaartheid, black people of south africa are the one who where building all this beautiful roads, buildings and other infrustructures you see today, but our people where paid almost nothing they where like slaves in their own land. Now fast forward to 1994,the new goverment had to address issues that where neglected during apaartheid times and one of the main issue was workers rights, the goverment could not let people be exploited by whites who continue controlling the economy.Labour movement where formed and aggreement where signed and people had better and save working enviroment and where also payed well. But some other companies started illegally hiring illigal immigrants from Zimbabwe and Mozambique and because this people have no documentation they where exploited and where paid almost nothing.Goverment failed to control the influx of illigal people in the country and this practices became popular with business(whites) because they made huge profits. Now as a unskillful South African it means you must compete with someone who don't care about safe working enviroment, who will take half wage, who is not paying tax,who does not care about retirement funds and most importanly who you feel undermined what you stand and fought for exploitation. Yes you can say this people want to earn a leaving as well since they come from trouble countries but the question is at whos expense? And you know what a poor uneducated, drunk person do when he is frustrated? He fights. In South Africa there is currently skills shortage and lots of skilled people accross Africa and the world came through the right channels and get work and they are getting all the benefits and contributing to the economy just like any SA citizen. Do you know that in South Africa today it is estimated that there are 10 to 15 million people legally or illigally from accross the continent? Majority of them live peacefully accros our country, what you saw in your TV was small number of poor people venting out their anger on govermnet to the innocent people. Shilling I'm not sure about your age but by any chance do you remember GHANA MUST GO CAMPAIGN(even big bags are still called ghanamustgo to this day) let by your govermnet? In south africa goverment never supported those attack, infact most of attackers are in jail as we speak and hopefully they will rot there. How bout a song with all our artist condemning Xeno, the song could be tight, some thing like' We are the one' done by Michael JAckson in the 80ties |

mbulela:Unathi is cool, she got that voice, that u want to hear saying good morning everyday but I prefer KB,she is a damn live perfomer, that lady and her dancers are world class, her shows are innovative, sexy, lively and she got incredible body, ass to die for(Gamine, yeah I said it again,ASS)mbulela:Inferior complex?shit thats not South Africans you are talking about, maybe if you say they look down on other Africans might make a bit of sense, south africans where taught that they are the most advanced blacks in Africa, obviously it was not entirely true. From where I am sitting I think that Nigerians are treated like kings everywhere they go in Africa except in South Africa, and you know why?because both of us are too proud,we both like to dominate. Xenophobia is a fear of unknown,Imagine if you where locked in your house for your entire life and one day someone open the door and there are hundreds of people at your door and all them want to get in not to see you but to take what they want in that house, what will you do? Personally I think you'll have two choices one to go to the corner and hide aways from them, two approach them and tell them how they should behavein your house and tell them the rules of your house,in most cases Nigerians will tell you to fukc off,and thats where you feel that you are invaded and you have to defend your self.Does it make sense?Politics lets leave it.
