Cock Crow at Dawn star, George Menta, dies in London

Nigeria has once again lost one of her best in the movie world as George Edafe Menta passed on at the age of 80 years. SS was reliably informed that Menta, who was one of the pioneers of the country’s movie industry, died at the Bristol Royal Infirmary in Bristol, the United Kingdom (UK), on Thursday March 29 during a protracted illness. Born on 3 June, 1931 in Bassa, Pla-teau State, Nigeria’s Menta lived in Jos where he had a very successful acting career in Cock Crow at Dawn, one of the popular sitcoms in the in the early 80s.Menta’s desire to make it in life saw him relocating from Nigeria to Eng-land at the young age of 20 in 1951.

.He later studied Law and became a telephonist at the international ex-change at the time, working his way up to become a supervisor, and it was while he was living in London that he met his wife Corine through a friend.

They were married in 1964, and had their first child Anne-Louise a year after.His return to Nigeria in 1974 saw him venturing into acting and poul-try farming.



And with acting being his most profound hobby, George Menta became a legend of a sort in Nigeria, with his role as Papa Bitrus in the now rested sitcom. He featured in a number of other national TV dramas, and Mister John-son was one of his most high profile movies. He appeared alongside film greats like Pierce Brosman of the James Bond fame, and veteran English actor Edward Woodward in 1990.

He was in Jos until he left for the UK in 1996 where he retired with his wife and four children. Pa Menta after losing his wife was always surround-ed by his children and grand children.

I hope as many people as possible read this. By and large, it is the bitter truth. Having lived in the UK for 10 years, and as a professional at that, I can say firmly that a lot of Our folks who venture abroad need to think it through well. I have seen quite a few folks wander till the prime of life is past. And then even their kids get lost to the 'system'. By the time everyone wakes up to reality, a lot water has passed under the bridge. If you are young person thinking of moving abroad, think carefully. I would not even advice anyone over 35 to consider relocating abroad permanently in terms of starting a new life/career. If you are under 35 and have been abroad and struggling with no clear end in sight, go back home.

@op, if you friend is really keen, and she has stopped growing i.e. older than 20 years, and can afford it, she can have a procedure of osteotomies to her lower limbs. This will give her a few inches. Its not a quick fix though and not without complications. Probably more practical to use adapted shoes!

@op well said. CPAP may not be readily available in Nigeria. You also need a formal sleep study for proper diagnosis although there are portable polysomnographs that can be used for home sleep study. For mild and maybe selected moderate case, surgery may be an alternative and is certainly is for 'heroic' snoring. The public do need to take this seriously especially for the overweight. It probably accounts for some of the sudden death variously attributed to witchcraft in our society. The easiest measure anyone can take is to have a proper weight (BMI less than 25).

Cell Phone and Breast Cancer Update
Let me start this update by first noting that there is no conclusive evidence that cell phones can cause breast cancer. That being said, I would like to provide some recent information that adds to my concern regarding the possible link between placing cell phones in direct contact with the breast and the risk of developing a breast cancer.

In a previous article I reviewed the limited literature on the subject and presented two cases of young women who placed their cell phones in their bras for a number of years. Each woman developed multiple small breast cancers directly below the area where the cell phone was placed on their breast. In the past year I have learned of numerous similar cases including one male who placed his cell phone in his shirt pocket (he had no family history of breast cancer).

Recently, I received an email from a mother whose 22 year old daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer. The daughter had been storing her cell phone in her bra since she was 18 years old. She developed a lump directly below the spot where she placed her cell phone and a biopsy was positive for invasive breast cancer. The mastectomy specimen showed multiple cancers below where the cell phone was placed. This young girl has no family history of breast cancer and she has no other known risk factors. Although there is no proof that prolonged cell phone contact with breast skin produces an increase in cancer risk, I think there is sufficient reason for caution. First of all, the manufacturers state that cell phones should not be placed in direct contact with the skin. Also of note, is that younger women may be at greater risk than older women.

We know with certainty that teenage girls are at major increased risk for breast cancer if they are exposed to multiple chest x-rays during their teen years (as is the case for girls with scoliosis). It took many years to prove that x-ray exposure at a young age is a risk factor for early onset breast cancer. If in fact there is such a relationship with cell phones, it is likely to also take years to prove it, and by then the damage will have been done.

As we all know, cell phone use among teenagers is increasing rapidly. One alarming trend is for teenaged girls to hide their cell phones in their bra during school hours. It will not be easy to get these young girls to change their behavior without more convincing evidence of harm. I am appealing to parents to share this information with their teenage daughters and to do whatever they can to convince them not to participate in this potentially risky behavior.

I received the following email a few months ago and I think it should be required reading for every teenage girl who stores her cell phone in her bra. I hope that readers will share this information with friends and family members. If you have any questions, feel free to Ask The Doctor.

Dr. West: I am commenting on the article about cell phones and breast cancer. My daughter discovered a lump above her left breast last December. She has undergone an ultrasound, an MRI and a biopsy which resulted in showing she had 4 masses and pathology reports that tested positive for breast cancer. What followed was a single left mastectomy and we are in the confines of radiation and chemo treatments. ALL genetic testing came back NEGATIVE which leads my motherly intuition to blame it on storing her cell phone in her bra for the past 4+ years.

She is now 22 and for a person of that age to have breast cancer is VERY unusual. She has had all treatments and surgery done at John’s Hopkins in Baltimore and I have all doctors noting the fact about her cell phone, but none of them are ready to even possibly acknowledge the fact that her cell phone was the cause.

Joeybra is making a bra that lets a person store their cell phone in their bra. Ever since she was diagnosed with cancer exactly where her cell phone was kept, I have been advocating for her in the awareness of the dangers of storing cell phones in bras. As frustrating as it is to try to convince people that this is a huge possibility and even a probability I will continue to advocate in order to save other young women from having to endure unnecessary breast cancer.

@op, although tinea unguium is not rare, developing them as suddenly as you describe is of concern. You need to check that your immune status is normal and also that your blood glucose is normal. That said, stop soaking in Dettol, it will only make it worse as dettol is bactericidal but not fungicidal. If your immune system is normal, topical antifungal may do but you need to use for months. I think you should get treated with medical supervision i.e. see a/your doctor ASAP! Email me if you need more advice/guidance.

@op well done! Beware of juice though. They are quite high in calories and they don't really quench thirst or hydrate you. For that you plain old water. Fruits are great however. So eat the raw fruit rather than fruit juice. The best way to lose weight is by controlling caloric intake. From your listed meals I see you are still slightly high on calories in your diet. Running/jogging for 30mis which sounds like a lot of excercise only burns about 250 Cal,- the amount in 2 slices of bread. The best approach to diet modification is portion control but you may as well eliminate certain food items altogether, e.g. Sugar, processed wheat products. Eat lots of greens. Keep up the good work!

@op, we went through our own stint with househelps when our kids were growing up. We had them all - the good, the bad, the very bad and the ugly. I think we went through about 10 of them in all! That taught me to kind of be able to 'diagnose' the type of person plus I also thank God for spiritual insight. From what you've said, that lady is not the most suitable for you. Be nice but firm- she needs to leave ASAP! We wouldn't want you coming back here crying! All the best.

@op, I'm afraid this doesn't sound good. This is a classical case of prevention being better than cure. Pre-eclampsia usually precedes full blown eclampsia and it is at that stage all effort should have been put in place to prevent progression, including ending the pregnancy to save baby and mum. Even in the best of hands and the best of places, eclampsia is bad, very bad. If you believe in prayers, start now. And mobilise others to join you in prayers while the medics continue to do what they can. All the best bro and keep us posted.
