Phones / Blackberry Moving Completely To Android In 2016.. by safo99(m): 3:46pm On Jan 08, 2016 |
Following the moderate commercial success and
generally positive reception of its latest Priv
smartphone, BlackBerry has announced that it is
going all-in as far as Android is concerned. Company
CEO John Chen confirmed in an interview at CES that
all BlackBerry smartphones launched this year will
run Google's operating system.
One could say this move has been a long time
coming, and it's better late than never. Once an
industry juggernaut, BlackBerry has struggled for a
good part of the last decade to find favor with new
users, who care increasingly less about BlackBerry's
core strengths in enterprise and security and more
about things like apps and games, something the
now distinctly long in tooth BlackBerry OS was never
good at. The move to Android has already won the
company some brownie points in the past few weeks
so it's good to see the company continue down that
road.
Chen refused to comment on the availability and
details of the upcoming devices. |

Car Talk / Google Reportedly Partnering With Ford To Mass Produce Self-driving Cars by safo99(m): 8:33am On Dec 22, 2015 |
Google and Ford are coming together to form a joint
venture that will focus on manufacturing of
autonomous vehicles, according to a new report. The
partnership between the companies will be
announced at the upcoming CES event in January.
As per the report, the new company would be legally
separate from Ford, so that there are no liability
concerns for the automaker. Also, the deal between
the two companies would be non-exclusive.
"We have been and will continue working with many
companies and discussing a variety of subjects
related to our Ford Smart Mobility plan," said a Ford
spokesperson when asked to comment on the
matter. Google, on the other hand, declined to
comment.
This comes over a few months after automotive
veteran John Krafcik became the first CEO of Google's
self-driving car project. While at that time the
Mountain View, California-based company clearly
stated that the project is not becoming an
independent company under Alphabet, recent
reports have suggested the possibility of that
happening in 2016. |

Phones / Lg Nw Developin Its Own Chipsets by safo99(m): 1:14am On Dec 22, 2015 |
You may not know this, but LG has been trying its
hand at mobile chipset design for a while now.
Following its initial Nuclun SoC, the Korean company
is at the moment developing its next solution, called
Nuclun 2. We first heard about it back in August, and
up until now there have been no releases of devices
powered by it.
But that could change next year. According to a new
(and unconfirmed) rumor out of China, LG will use
the Nuclun 2 in the successor to the V10 - a
smartphone the company has launched not long ago.
Hence, the V10's successor will be out no sooner
than the second half of 2016. That's quite the wait for
the Nuclun 2 to actually make it into a shipping
product.
LG's latest chip will not be powering the G5 (which
should arrive in or around April), allegedly because
it's simply not fast enough for the flagship device.
Even so, the Nuclun 2 is said to be able to
outperform Huawei's Kirin 950, if not by much. The
Nuclun 2 will be manufactured using TSMC's 16nm
process, and it has a CPU which reportedly features
Cortex-A72 and Cortex-A53 cores.
As for the Nuclun 3, this one will be aimed at
competing head-on with Samsung's Exynos 8890
(which will power one version of the Galaxy S7), but
it's unclear when the third-gen in-house chipset from
LG will hit the streets in a shipping handset. At the
rate things are going, it may come much later than
the SoC it wants to compete with, however. |

Phones / Gionee Marathon M5 Plus And M5 Enjoy Launched by safo99(m): 10:45pm On Dec 21, 2015 |
Gionee's Marathon series of big-battery-packing
smartphones was just expanded with the addition of
the Marathon M5 Plus and the Marathon M5 Enjoy.
Launched today in China, the two smartphones
address one notable omission from the original
Marathon M5's specsheet - the fingerprint sensor.
GIONEE MARATHON M5 Plus
The Gionee M5 Plus sits on top of the series and
leans towards a higher segment of the midrange. The
smartphone comes with a significantly more
powerful (though not record breaking) Mediatek
MT6753 chipset with an octa-core CPU. There is 3GB
of RAM on board, same as the M5, but built-in
storage has been doubled to 64GB, and you can
further expand it by up to 128GB via microSD.
Trading-off cell capacity for screen size, the new Plus-
size model comes with a 6-inch FullHD AMOLED
display and "only" 5,020mAh worth of juice, where
the M5’s specsheet reads 5.5 inches, 720p, and
6,020mAh. The smartphone measures 160.9 x 81.2 x
8.4mm, which is reasonably compact for the screen
and battery size, and weighs in at 208g – 3g lighter
than the 5.5-inch M5.
The 13MP primary camera on the back comes with
phase detection autofocus and a single LED flash,
while the front-facer is a 5MP unit. There’s a
fingerprint sensor on the front in place of the
capacitive home key of other Gionee models. Fast
charging is supported and is done via a reversible
Type-C connector, though it only adheres to the USB
2.0 standard.
The smartphone supports multi-band 2G/3G and LTE,
as well as Bluetooth 4.0 and runs on Android 5.1
Lollipop with the company’s Amigo OS overlay on
top, in its 3.1 incarnation. Priced at CNY 2,499 ($385),
the Gionee Marathon M5 Plus is available for
purchase right now.
GIONEE MARATHON M5 ENJOY
Alongside the M5 Plus, Gionee announced the
Marathon M5 Enjoy – a smartphone similarly
specced to the original M5. However, you better be
careful when choosing between the two, as different
compromises have been made, potentially affecting
user experience.
For starters, the M5 Enjoy’s display is a TFT unit,
whereas the M5 had an AMOLED panel, though both
are 5.5-inch 720p units. Battery capacity is in favor of
the M5, as the M5 Enjoy comes with a 5,000mAh
power pack, and not 6,020mAh. And instead of the
13MP primary camera, the M5 Enjoy only comes with
an 8MP snapper. Where the new model trumps the
old one is the inclusion of a fingerprint scanner.
There rest is mostly the same – a Mediatek MT6735
chipset with a quad-core CPU, 3GB of RAM and
Android 5.1 Lollipop. Internal storage has been sliced
halved to 16GB, but is still expandable. The Marathon
M5 Enjoy is more modestly priced, compared to the
Plus, and goes for CNY 1,999 ($310).
So wat do u tink guys is time for an upgrade? |
