PoliticsFall Of Sambisa Will Revive Northern Economy – Arewa Youths by saints2(op): 7:31pm On Dec 26, 2016
A group, the Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) has said that the fall of Sambisa Forest and defeat of the Boko Haram terrorists will revive the economy in the north east, as investors who hitherto left will be encouraged to return.

The youths also commended the army for its resilience and sacrifices that led to the victory over the insurgents.

Speaking during a press conference in Kaduna, National President of NYLF, Alhaji Adadu Adadu said the defeat of the terror group united Nigerians of conscience along religious and ethnic lines.

He said the defeat of Boko Haram is an event that has brought 2016 to a close on a positive note irrespective of any other unpleasant experiences we might have had as a people during the year.

“The Northern Youth Leaders Forum (NYLF) heartily thanks the Nigerian Army, all the other military services, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Tukur Buratai and other military chiefs for defeating the enemies of Nigeria.”

“Boko Haram killed without thoughts for their victims’ ethnicity, creed or geographical origin. It was a thorn in our flesh collectively and the Army has therefore brought relief to us all and not just a particular location or people. The joy from this act of valour is across board.”

“It is remarkable that Boko Haram was defeated against all odds. NYLF had at some point in the past appealed to the Nigerian Army not to be distracted by those reading political meanings into its action. We had also in the past urged the COAS not to slow down in his zeal on account of propaganda mounted against him by Boko Haram sponsors and sympathisers.”

Speaking further, he said, “There were other occasions when we acknowledged the progress being made in the war in spite of propaganda to the contrary. We are happy that our counsel was not in vain and the Army has gone on to demonstrate that the state is supreme above crises entrepreneurs.”

“That the army and the COAS hearkened to our appeals and those of like-minded Nigerians in the past to keep up the fight gives us great joy. It showed a leadership and institution that is responsive to the populace it is securing. For this we say thank you the Nigerian Army and the COAS.”

He lamented that the Boko Haram insurgency killed economic activities same way it killed many enterprising young minds, sating incidence of unemployment and poverty became more acute in the north as the madness of this murderous group drove off existing investors while making it impossible to attract new one.

He said, “youths that were not killed in attacks were forced to flee to other parts of the country for safety before considering how to eke out living. General Buratai has restored the hope that Nigeria but particularly the north in this case can again return to being an investment hub.

“We realise that this cannot happen overnight but the defeat of Boko Haram terror group is a new beginning towards this goal.”

Adadu however appealed to Nigerians to speak against any attempt by fleeing Boko Haram fighters who would still attempt to cause outrage if only to provide openings for their sponsors to start casting doubts on their group’s demise.

He said Nigerians must also be vigilant to furnish security agencies with information that could assist in the capture of fleeing Boko Haram members.

TravelPassport, License Process To Be Easy by saints2(op): 7:16pm On Dec 26, 2016
The Director-General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), Dr Joe Abah, says the process of getting passport, driver’s license among others will be made easy in 2017

Abah in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday said there will be new reforms in public service in 2017 that would adequately foster the country’s growth“We have a 10-year plan for reforms we’ve been following, however, as with every plan the sequence and prioritisation ranges with government emphasis.

“And so for 2017 we will be focusing very heavily on making it easier to do business in Nigeria.

“And that is why the bureau has commissioned a number of studies to look at the bottlenecks to service delivery and we are looking at those things that affect the ordinary Nigerian directly.

“For instance, the processes for getting a passport, the processes for getting a driver’s licence, the process for getting a tax clearance and the process for seeing a doctor in a government hospital.

“And the gap between when you retire and when you actually start to get your pension. We have instances where people have retired and for one year they haven’t got any pension.

“So, these are some of the topical issues we will be looking at to see where the bottlenecks are and what we can do to ease the process.

“We are also optimistic that our report on restructuring of the merged ministry will go to council very early in the new year, with a recommendation that we do the same for all the other ministries,’’ the director-general said.

He said the recent announcement by the National Economic Council chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo showed that the government was now willing to address some of the issues.

According to him, the government is now willing to look seriously at the issue of rationalisation of agencies and parastatals, as we will finally have a go ahead with the work that we have designed.

Abah also emphasised the need to break the communication gap between the government and the citizenry as it relates to how government works.

He, however, said that the bureau would in January 2017 commission a policy paper essentially to address the gaps.

“We are also concerned that the communication function of government doesn’t work as well as it should and this is not unique to this administration.

“It’s been an ongoing problem for a very long time where government is simply not getting the message along to the citizens and citizens are not engaging with the government.

“So we will be commissioning a policy paper in January essentially showing how the disconnection in communication is actually hurting the government.

“And the need for a coordinated message that citizens can engage with and the opportunity for citizens to be put through the way that government works.

“We’ve already spoken with the Ministry of Information about it and also spoken with one of the Special Assistants to the President on new media on how we can work together to address these issues,’’ he said.

The director-general also noted that the rate of unemployment in the country was worrisome, adding that the bureau will be engaging with the youth ministry and stakeholders in line with this.

Besides, he said that the bureau was working towards ensuring that there was coordinated approach to dealing with the problems of unemployment in Nigeria rather what it used to be.

“We will be doing a study in March on youth unemployment because again there is a problem with coordination.

“We have the Ministry of Youths and Sports doing something on youth unemployment, we have the Ministry of Women Affairs doing its own; we have the Ministry of Labour and Employment doing its own.

“We also have the National Directorate of Employment, we have various people doing various things but there is no coordination.

“So that is one thing we also want to look at.

“Because the issue of youth unemployment is something that is at the very fore front of our consciousness and something we are really concerned about,’’ said Abah.

All Progressives Congress (APC) member in Niger, Alhaji Kabiru Rijau, has lauded the efforts of the Nigerian Military in the ongoing fight against insurgents in the North east.

Rijau told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna on Sunday that the Military had demonstrated professionalism by directing terrible blows on insurgents in the Sambisa forest of Borno.
He also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the political will to fight the insurgents and other criminal activities in the country.

Rijau called on Nigerians to continue to support security personnel deployed to fight the insurgents with prayers for successful military operations to end the insurgency.

He also appealed to Nigerians to take the advantage of the Christmas and New Year festivities, to seek God`s intervention for solutions to the current economic recession and insecurity challenges in the country.

The APC member said that prayers among Nigerians were essential at this period for God`s special intervention in the nation’s socio-economic and political activities.

Rijau advised businessmen and women against rampant increase in prices of food items before, during and after the festivities.

He also called on Nigerians to support the President Buhari-led administration to enable it implement its laudable programmes for the development of the country.

He expressed confidence that the nation would be great under the present administration and urged Nigerians to continue to be patient with the/MTM government at all levels.

A suicide bomber, who disguised as a beggar has killed a young student and a woman in an attack on a market full of Christmas shoppers.

The bomb also killed the attacker and wounded five other persons. The attack happened in the northern Cameroon town of Mora, a day after Nigeria proclaimed a total victory against the Boko Haram insurgents.

An aide to the governor of Far North region, Midjiyawa Bakary. confirmed the fresh attack on Sunday.

“The suicide bomber was pretending to be a beggar and was walking towards the market which was full because of Christmas. Members of a vigilance committee spotted him before he could penetrate the market,” a Cameroonian soldier told Reuters.

“He was stopped and in panic he detonated his explosives. If he hadn’t been spotted the death toll would have been higher,” he said.

In the past, suicide bombers suspected of belonging to the Islamist militant group Boko Haram had launched attacks on the town, which lies about 30 km (20 miles) from the Nigerian border.

Fighters from Boko Haram have killed thousands in their campaign to carve out an Islamist state in their base in northeast Nigeria and have also launched attacks in neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

The group has frequently used female bombers and children to hit targets.

Similar attacks used to happen on an almost daily basis in Cameroon, but the International Crisis Group reported this month that the frequency had fallen since September, leading analysts to believe Boko Haram was weakening there.

The Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu has pledged the Commission’s support for the World Food Programme, WFP, towards ensuring that all support deployed by its donors and the government of Nigeria reaches its beneficiaries without any threat of corruption.

Magu made the pledge on Tuesday, December 20, 2016 while signing a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, with the WFP at the EFCC’s Head Office, Abuja.

The EFCC boss who noted that corruption is a serious threat that negatively affects the development of a nation said the new partnership will in no small measure help in alleviating the sufferings of internally displaced people especially in the northern part of Nigeria.

His words: “we assure you that we will follow you to every nook and cranny of the North Eastern states like Yobe, Borno and Adamawa. We will be with you where ever you need our attention, if there are no operative where you are, we will send you operatives from here. We will support and work with your intervention to reach its beneficiaries without any threat of corruption”.

Earlier, Bernadin Assiene, Director of Inspections and Investigations, WFP, noted that that the MoU between WFP and EFCC is an important aspect of WFP’s intervention in Nigeria and its main objective is to ensure that all the support mobilized by it effectively reaches its beneficiaries and is safe-proofed from any risk of fraud and corruption.

He also described the importance of signing of the MoU with EFCC as first of its kind saying,"today's MoU signing is the confirmation that EFCC is the right partner to help WFP establish specific assurance mechanisms in Nigeria.”

He also poured accolades on the Commission’s doggedness in the fight against corruption adding that, “EFCC's expertise, reputation and track record of successful engagements in the fight against fraud and corruption in the utilization of foreign assistance is well recognized, both nationally and internationally.”

Sory Ouane, WFP Representative and Country Director, in his remark explained how the WFP had provided intervention to the North East through its intervention programme assuring that it would continue.

“The ongoing conflict in Northeast Nigeria has the potential to cause further displacement and increase food insecurity. Therefore, WFP is revising its emergency operations to implement a robust scale up and an integrated response to meet the overwhelming needs in Northeast Nigeria, targetting 1.8 milllion people in Borno and Yobe States in 2017”, he said.

While Magu signed the MoU on behalf of the EFCC, Assiene signed for the WFP.

Other members of the WFP at the event include: Peter Musoko Deputy Regional Director; Femi Amure, West Africa Project Advisor/Liason and Ijeoma M. Garba, External Partnership.

The occasion was witnessed by members of the management team of the EFCC.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said all is now set for the launch of the Digital Switch Over (DSO) in broadcasting in Abuja on Thursday.

The Minister announced this in Abuja on Monday during the tour of key facilities of Pinnacle Communication Limited, the signal distribution for the Abuja DSO.

"We are impressed by the speed, commitment and passion of Pinnacle to this project and we have come here to ensure that no stone is left unturned to ensure smooth Digital Switch Over in Abuja on Thursday," he said.

Alhaji Mohammed said 30 free channels will be available for Abuja residents upon the switch over on Thursday and that over 450,000 Set-Top Boxes have been provided for the flag-off.

"It's a revolution in the broadcasting ecosystem as far as Nigeria is concerned because not only are we going to have better clarity and audio but the average resident of FCT who is in possession of our Set-Top Box will have 30 free channels from news, entertainment, music....This is going to open a new vista for content," he said.

The Minister expressed confidence that within 3 years of the digital transition, 1 million jobs will be created in the development of television content, technical services, software development, as well as the installation and repair of Set-Top Boxes for over 24 million TV households, among others.

The Minister said even though the Digital Switch Over will not take place in one fell swoop across the country, the Federal Government remains resolute in its commitment to meeting the 2017 deadline for the DSO.

Also speaking at the Call Centre of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), he said the government is equally concerned about customers' satisfaction, which informed the setting up of the Call Centre where subscribers can call to make inquiries or complaints for prompt response.

Alhaji Mohammed, who was accompanied by the NBC Director General, Mallam Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, and the Chairman of DIGITEAM Nigeria, Mr. Edward Amana, inspected facilities at the Monitoring Room, Transmission Station and the Call Centre.

The Pilot Scheme of the DSO was launched in Jos, Plateau State, on 30 April 2016
