Dealers in Nigeria have returned several unsold Galaxy Note 7 phones and had their money refunded. However, the buyers of the sold phones have refused to return them to the dealers for onward return to Samsung. Although the Galaxy Note 7 phones had not been officially released in Nigeria before the recall, some dealers and customers had already purchased the phone from other countries. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Samsung Electronics West Africa had made provision for dealers to safely package and return the phones to the company due to fault it admitted. Vincent Anago, a dealer in phones and accessories at Banex plaza, said “dealers across the country have been asked to return the Galaxy Note 7 phones which they have in stock. “We have returned the ones we have and have been refunded but we still haven’t had many of our customers return the ones we sold them.” Uche Okoro, a phone dealer, said that quite a number of the phones had been returned to the company but many Nigerians failed to oblige with the request. “We have been asked to return these phones because of the malfunction which is hazardous but it seems Nigerians are not worried about the situation. “Some of us were able to get these phones and introduce them to the Nigerian market on time and despite the high cost they sold well. “We have had a few reported incidences of the phone batteries heating up and leading to a fire and we expected that more people will be convinced of the danger the phone poses. “We are still pleading with Nigerians to return these phones for an exchange or refund and to take advantage of the opportunity now because the phones won’t be accepted after Samsung stops requesting for them.” Samsung had first called for the return and halting of sales of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 products in September due to the number of battery explosions that were reported by consumers. Eric Umeofia, the Chief Executive Officer of Erisco Foods, has decried the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s foreign exchange policies, saying they were stifling local manufacturers’ operations and growth. Mr. Umeofia said this on Tuesday in Lagos at a news conference. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Erisco Foods is an indigenous tomato paste manufacturing company that employs thousands of Nigerians.“Our reason for investing in the country is not only for money but also to help our people and our country to achieve her vision in line with government’s agenda to diversify the economy. “In our effort to support the government, we developed a technology that enabled us to produce tomato paste with fresh and dry tomatoes. “We have spent over N4 billion to buy dry tomatoes and fresh tomatoes that ought to have wasted as usual from our local farmers, but it is just lying in our warehouses for lack of Forex approval. “The Forex is to get enough machines sufficient for our capacity to convert them into quality raw materials for the production of tomato paste and to meet up with our packaging lines, to reduce our production cost. “In view of the above, we will start to lay off about 1,500 of our staff in batches and start moving our machines and equipment out of the country,” the manufacturer said. He said the planned downsizing and plant relocation should be completed in six months to nine months. Mr. Umeofia said that the relocation of production plant to China would increase unemployment, tomato waste and the food import bill of the country, adding that government’s diversification agenda would be enhanced through effective processing of agricultural produce. According to him, the country should move beyond producing primary agricultural products and into processing and manufacturing to enable farmers to reap from their cultivation. “The bumper harvest we are experiencing now is as a result of the people’s determination to go back to farm in line with the campaign for more people to embrace Agriculture. “If we are serious about diversifying the economy, we must go beyond producing primary agricultural products and go into processing, preserving and manufacturing. “That is how to encourage farmers to work harder,” Umeofia said. The Central Bank of Nigeria has warned Nigerians not to patronize the so-called ‘wonder banks’, as their activities were not regulated by it. The warning was issued on Monday by the Head, Consumer Protection Department, CBN, Hajiya Kadija Kassim. Kassim stated this during a mentoring programme for students of the Government Secondary School, Suleja, Niger State. The programme held simultaneously in over 200 schools as part of activities to mark the World Savings Day. ‘MMM Federal Republic of Nigeria (nigeria.)’ also called “mutual aid financial network,” is said to come with a monthly investment return of 30 per cent. But, the CBN said anything could happen to people who invested in the scheme as it is not regulated by the apex bank. Kassim, while responding to a question asked by one of the students, described the scheme as fraudulent since it was not supported by any business model. She said, “We have heard about the activities of MMM, but I want to warn you against it because they are wonder banks that are not regulated. “Desist from their activities because they are fraudulent.” She said the theme of this year’s World Savings Day, ‘Don’t save what is left after spending, but spend what is left after saving’, would assist in creating the needed awareness on the need to save. She added, “The World Savings Day is a tradition created with the objective of stressing the importance of savings for modern economies and individuals alike. “The primary objective is to increase awareness on financial literacy among various segments of the general public to sensitise them to the importance of saving, earning a livelihood, inculcating a savings habit, and generating employment and entrepreneurship for personal and national development.” Source: http://www.ajayiwrites.com/2016/11/mmm-cbn-issues-strong-warning-to.html

Nigeria's largest airline Arik Air plans to nearly double its fleet to 52 planes within 10 years and has already ordered some of them from Boeing, a source at the company said on Monday. Most of the carrier's existing fleet are Boeing planes and the source, who did not wish to be identified, said the airline would buy most of the new planes from the U.S. planemaker. The source did not say how many had already been ordered or the value of the purchases. Privately owned Arik Air needs more planes as it aims to add international routes and increase services, including daily flights to New York, to offset a slowdown at home and bring in more hard currency. It is also seeking new investors to help it grow and has said it wants to raise up to $1 billion through a private share placement next year and a possible initial public offering (IPO). Founded a decade ago and now west Africa's biggest carrier by passenger numbers, Arik Air has appointed advisers for the share placement and potential IPO in Lagos, with a secondary listing in London. "We hope to maintain our market leadership and our growth strategy involving substantially increasing our fleet to 52 aircrafts by 2025," Managing Director Chris Ndulue said on Monday at a briefing in Lagos to mark the carrier's 10 years of operations. "We plan to ... put our footprint in Europe, Asia and Latin America and the Middle East, and this requires additional aircraft," he said. Arik Air's home market has been hit by falling demand as a currency crisis in Africa's top economy deepens, due in part to the oil price slump. United and Iberia both stopped services to Nigeria this year and Emirates and Kenya Airways have announced plans to suspend flights to Nigeria's capital Abuja by next month. Ndulue said Arik Air would also look at various funding options from international banks despite dollar shortages and the economic recession at home, which had affected businesses. The carrier currently has a fleet of 28 aircraft, mostly Boeings but also three Airbus planes and nine Bombardier aircraft. New routes and services would help the airline generate foreign currency. Old Peugeot products are trusted, reliable, rugged, long-lasting and haulage beast on diverse terrains of Nigeria. Peugeot 404, 504 and 505 salon cars, wagons and pick-up vans were the preferred automobiles of users and delights of auto mechanics. President Muhammadu Buhari is worried and shocked by the recently released Human Rights Watch (HRW) report which alleges sexual abuse and exploitation of women and girls in camps for those displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency. The welfare of these most vulnerable of Nigerian citizens has been a priority of his government. Nigerians and the international community can rest assured that the allegations raised in the HRW are not being taken lightly. President Buhari has instructed the Inspector General of Police and the state governors of the affected states to immediately commence investigations into the issue. Their findings will determine the next course of action for the government and define an appropriate response. While the Nigerian military continues to work hard so that these unfortunate victims of Boko Haram terrorism can soon return safely to their homes, the government will do its best to ensure their protection and welfare in the temporary IDP camps Source: http://www.ajayiwrites.com/2016/10/president-buhari-calls-for-action-on.html

New Nigeria I see - Osibanjo lalasticlala, mynd44 |
Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, has reiterated his call on Nigerian elites to come together based on a common consensus to build the nation as Nigerians clearly desire good governance, according to a statement by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant on Media & Publicity in the Office of the Vice President. Speaking at the gala/ dinner event organized by the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans, CANAN in Houston, USA on Friday night, the Vice President noted that, “ even in the midst of all the country is going through, there is a growing consensus by all and sundry on the need for good governance.” At the event attended by leaders of the Nigerian community in the US and American political leaders including US Congress Woman Sheila Jackson Lee, the Vice President was presented an honorary US Congressional Proclamation to commemorate his visit to Texas and also honor the Buhari presidency. Explaining the need for a group of Nigerians who are committed to lifting the nation to rise up, Prof Osinbajo noted that this was important to counter and stop those who are working to pillage the resources of the country. "This is why the president and myself have made a call that we need a New Tribe of Nigerians. We do need a new tribe of men and women of all faiths, tribes and ethnicities, who are commited to a country run on high values of integrity, hard-work, justice and love for the country," he said. Continuing he said "I mean a tribe of men and women who are prepared to make the sacrifices and self-constraints that are crucial to building a strong society; who are prepared to stick together, fight corruption side by side, and insist on justice." Prof. Osinbajo pointed out that the current administration takes diaspora issue very seriously, a reason, according to him that the President appointed a Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora in person of former House of Representative member, Mrs. Abike Daibiri. Highlighting the importance further, the VP also pointed at the proposal for a Diaspora Commission, and a diaspora bond worth N1 trillion for investment purpose by both Nigerians at home and abroad. Osinbajo commended CANAN for its accomplishments during its short existence. He listed some of CANAN’s achievements to include being in forefront of the quest to designate Boko Haram as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, FTO, by the US and also donating $50,000.00 in 2013 to Boko Haram victims, stating that these are a demonstration of patriotism by members of the association even while outside the shores of the country. Speaking earlier, the President of CANAN, Dr. James Fadel urged Nigerians to engage in prophetic prayers in order to take the country out of its current predicament. Giving assurance that things will indeed end well for the country, Fadel enjoined Nigerians to pray for the country. Nigerians, Dr. Fadel said, must reject the tendency to be a consuming nation without the desire to also produce, adding that what is needed now is for all and sundry to build trust in God to win the battle against the nation’s opposing forces. At the event, the Vice President was presented with an honorary congressional proclamation by US Congress woman Sheila Jackson-Lee, who indicated that the US Congress takes Nigeria as a very serious partner, a reason it has given great support to the ongoing fight against Boko Haram. She disclosed that it is on record that, Nigeria is one of the countries that has its own Caucus among the elected representative in the US Congress, made up of both Democrats and Republicans. Some Nigerians were honored at the gala night for their achievements in various areas of human endeavors in the US, including Dr. Oluyinka Olutoye, the US-based Nigerian doctor who recently operated on a pregnant American mother who had a tumor growth. Olutoye removed the fetus, operated on the tumor, and returned the fetus. The pregnant woman then completed the pregnancy term and delivered the baby safely. Vice President Osinbajo presented the laurels to all the high-flying US based Nigerians honored at the event. Source: http://www.ajayiwrites.com/2016/10/vp-osinbajo-takes-message-for-new-tribe.html
