... Calls for better incentives and compensation for both state and federal workers. *By Ifeanyi Ndukwe, Awka* Employers in public and private sectors have been advised to harmonized the salary structures to bridge the gap and foster better welfare and improved standard of living of workers. This call was made by the Anambra state Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu PhD, on the United Nations lnternational equal pay day which is celebrated annually on every September 18th. Odogwu said workers under the state civil service are paid below their colleagues at the federal level despite performing similar functions and duties and decried that workers in some private sector are enslaved. "It is very appalling that in Nigeria people are taking different salaries. For instance, people working under the federal, state and even the local government are taking different salaries. "I don't think it augurs well with workers at the state and local council levels considering the fact that they perfom the same functions and similar duties. They also work under the same economy and shop from the same markets. He continues, "Take a look at the fact that the pay of a director working under federal government is three times more than his colleague in the state ministry. Monthly wages of some civil servants in state ministries are joke compared to their counterparts at the federal levels who earn higher pay." "The worst hit are those under parastatals where someone, after working for so many years, retires without pension and gratuity." He also condemned the massive exploitation in the private sector, "It is only in the private sector you see a graduate taking home something below minimum wage as monthly salary. Where such employees are paid good salaries, they would ensure they enslave the workers to death." Commemorating the 2022 International Equal Pay Day, the gallant chairman urged President Buhari to direct the Salaries and Wages Commission to address the anomaly and set a benchmark for salaries of both the federal, and state workers, even private sector. He seized the opportunity to call on the Anambra state government and private organisations to consider effecting an upgrade of salaries and general welfare of workforce in their system. |

By lfeanyi Ndukwe Contrary to rumours making the rounds that the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi was attacked in Abuja, his media aide,Valentine Obienyem has denied the rumours, saying, Obi was not attacked, "he is hale and hearty". In an official statement made available to the press earlier today, Obienyem said that Obi has come back to the country after his three weeks trips abroad . He described the rumours that Obi was attacked as "falsehood". The statement reads in part: "In the last three weeks, Peter Obi has transversed the world, convincing Nigerians on the need to take back their country and move in sync with the rest of the world. "Kindly ignore the falsehood making the rounds that he was attacked. May God forbid that even the very thought of such barbarism be visited on him. "Obi has consistently reiterated his belief that politics should always be devoid of violence. This remains his political credo. "It is pertinent to note that the news, coming shortly after Barr. Festus Keyamo’s press release, alleging plans by Obi to stage manage his own assassination is worrisome. It shows that the devil may be at work in endless and familiar scheming. "We shall continue to entrust Mr. Peter Obi into the protection of the Almighty, while he ensures he is adequately protected to see through the work of re-building Nigeria that providence has entrusted unto him", Obienyem said.

*Abia state: Are we cursed or are we the cause* On a neutral ground, I am a young man of few speeches. I was trained to make fewer words supported with massive action. However, our Igbo adage says and I beg to interpret in English, "Oke onye ama na nulo, Ewu amu na ogbuli" meaning an adult would not be at home doing nothing while watching a pregnant goat deliver with ropes tied to neck on the stalk. In this regards, the state of my state has gone so awry and a disgust. I would have kept quiet. However, when few days ago, our mothers took to the streets and laid bare on the road with tears of agony. Then I realised that the need to liberate and sensitize the stakeholders of our dear God's own state was paramount. August 27th, 2022 was a memorable day for ndi Anambrans as they celebrated their 31st year of creation with several achievements and feats. Unfortunately, Abia state is regarded to be of the same age with Anambra. But its a pity that these whole years, we have had the worst government in Southern Nigeria since creation aside the impact laid by Dee Sam Mbakwe during the old Imo state dispensation. While growing up, my father, Chief Emmanuel Ndukwe would advised saying, show me your friend and I will tell you who you are. He always reminded me that my company speaks aloud about my personality. Growing up into a young adult, I think he was wrong? You may wonder why I say so. Permit to explain myself. If one's company determines one's worth or personality. How come a man who is regarded as a governor of Abia state for good 8 number of years will only show off a single bridge when the same person he keeps as a friend boasts of over 10 of those. Another irony comes to play. You visit and support your friend, Governor Wike son's graduation in UK. But you fail to support and fund education in your own state. Under lkpeazu shortsighted administration, ABSU lecturers are owed several months of salaries, Secondary school teachers in Abia are owed for almost 2 years(my aunt is amongst those affected) and as I recently learnt that the Abia State University Teaching Hospital has shut its doors since 9 months. Come off it, where did we leave our sanity. Umu Abia, shall we continue this way? Do we stoop to darkness? While our neighbouring states are advancing in digital economy? When shall we confront our fears and dismantle this bondage of the Orji demonic dynasty. l am no partisan or one-sided player. But sincerely, having toured 16 states of the federation including the new wave of Ebonyi state, I weep with sorrow that if we don't step out and step up, we will remain the cause of our problems? Are we cursed? No. Are we the cause? Yes. Emphatic yes. Its true that several youths of my nativity are agitating for self determination. However, its necessary we take actions today by using our manpower, PVC. We must get it right this time. We are not fools. Abia maramma. We are intelligent. We are industrious. At this time, Umu Abia must choose their leader wisely. A leader who is not imposed on us. A leader with compassion, humility and emotional intelligence. One with visionary to transform our many indigenous ideas to digitalised economy. Ndi Ibeanyi biko, biara this is the time to do the needful. This is not the time to vote party. This is a time to vote for capacity, integrity, vision and foresight *IFEANYI Ndukwe, writes from Awka. He is convener, Arise, New Abia Movement*

On the sidelines, the team leader of the dance crew expressed delight over the government support to elevate entertainment in the state. Meanwhile, highlights of the programme included singing, rounds of photography, and autographs amongst others.

Slams Muslim/Muslim Ticket *Hails Soludo's Intervention On Roads* By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, His Lordship Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor, has expressed dismay over the incessant abduction and killing of Catholic priests across the country, emphasizing that by killing a priest, they had killed Christ the second time, reports Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu. The visibly sad Bishop Ezeokafor, who stated this at St Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Awka, while speaking on the state of the nation, said it was clear that unscrupulous elements were behind the act, noting that war had been tacitly declared against the Mother Church in Nigeria, with Catholic priests, religious and laity, as their major targets. The outspoken prelate expressed displeasure with the nonchalant attitude of the Federal Government of Nigeria over the plights of Catholic priests, religious and laity, noting that it was no longer news that some people, somewhere were scheming and carrying out evil against the Universal Church. The charismatic and influential cleric stated that with the continued abduction and killing of Catholic priests, one would conclude that there was a grand plan to silence Christ’s followers in the country, saying that they would not be cowed or intimidated. ‘Catholic priests are Christ’s representatives on earth. Killing them amounts to killing Christ a second time. Catholic priests should be respected. They made the greatest sacrifice here: no wife, no children, no heir, nobody to succeed them when they are gone. What other sacrifice is greater or costlier than that? ‘You are abducting and killing them because they are doing Christ’s work on earth. What wrong have they done? It is really abominable to maim a priest. Why go after a hapless servant of God? Someone who has left everything for the sake of God’s people. Priests deserve to be protected, encouraged and motivated. ‘Their cries will reach the heavens and the heavens will fight their battles. Nigeria Government should be very careful. Their usual silence over these killings and abduction of Catholic priests simply shows that they are enjoying it. They should remember that God’s anger will definitely descend on Nigeria’s government if it continues to play the ostrich. ‘I am seriously troubled. I am pained. I cannot keep quiet. I will continue to talk. Catholic priests should be appreciated for leading in everything good. They sacrificed their all. They are not after ministerial appointments or contracts. Why go after them?’ Bishop Ezeokafor queried. The chief shepherd of the Catholic Diocese of Awka, while reacting on the abduction and killing of Catholic priests across the country, condemned in strong terms the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress, saying that it was unacceptable in a secular state like Nigeria, describing it as height of insensitivity and wickedness. ‘You cannot come to a state like Nigeria with many different religions and be talking about Muslim-Muslim ticket. Are they saying that there is no competent Christian in the north? I’m sure there are many of them, even the Secretary of the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, is a Christian. They choose to ignore him and many others Christians in the North. ‘There must be balance in everything. These are some of the things that are causing so much agitation here and there. Nigerians should rise and condemn it. Nigeria is not a Moslem country. We have two major religions; Christianity and Islam. There are others too. Why settle for one religion if you do not have a hidden agenda?,’ he asked. Bishop Ezeokafor said that Governor Soludo’s intervention at the collapsed portion of Amansea and Amawbia axis of the Enugu – Onitsha Expressway had brought a lot of relief to commuters and transporters. ‘We are happy that with even the challenges, this administration has continued to show some prospects. They said there will be massive road construction after the raining season. I suggest they get those weather forecasters to assist them. There are times in August when there will be a break. They can do something by then. ‘Commmuters plying the Amawbia axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Express Road have started heaving a sigh of relief now that the Anambra State Government, under Professor Chukwuma Soludo is reconstructing failed portions of the road. It is a welcome development,’ the bishop said. |

* A Gods own state that stood the test of times. Created under the distinguished administration of the lbrahim Badamosi Babangida, the then Military leader of Nigeria. This is 3decades of various leadership capacity. However, one of the prominent and selfless leadership ever recorded still remains the Orji-Uzor Kalu led administration that spanned between the years of 1999- 2007. That period recorded unprecedented achievements ranging from sports awareness, civil service restructuring, youth empowerment and security conducive environment. Take note, I am no fan of either political leader or aspirants but a passionate Abian with a quest for progressive change in the state. Needless to dwell on the waterloop leadership of Theodore Orji, a man that would be regarded as the worst governor in Nigeria history. Extortion, non payment of civil servants, poor health and insecurities filled the day. Then came the dark complexioned Ngwa man. At a time, the great people of Abia had hoped to experience light at the end of the tunnel. But it dealt us another blow. Our new leader is referee to as a drunkard, lavishing state resources at unholy partying and occasions. A governor that would entertain a radio interview and proudly say that each woman delivers of a baby in a government clinic would receive #500naira. Shame! My people, shame! At an hour when ex- Anambra governor, Willie Obiano would fute the bills of a poor mother and establish a lasting fund solution to cater for the indigents. At a period the state of Ebonyi would boast of ultra modern medical infrastructure and basic social amenities amidst his challenges with the political jangatums. Fellow Abians, this is high time we say to no the antics of selfish politicians? Its high time we said no to party and embrace personality? If we fail to standup to this responsibility of ensuring our dear state gets good representation in all political quarters. Then we have failed our generation. Don't you care about the state of our state. For some of us based in Lagos, Akwa -Ibom, Awka, Akure, Enugu and our close neighbor, Abakilliki. Don't you weep for the absurd state this Gods own state has turned to? First, the incumbent governor came with a fat lie of paying old debts left by the T.A. Orji administration. Now, 7years down memory lane. There is hardly any concrete projects to hold onto except a long overhead bridge at Osisioma. Suffice to say, that same project was earlier signed by Gov. Orji Uzor. Brethren, i implore you, fellow youths and statemen, mothers and fathers. I appeal to you to make hay while the sun shines. Abia must be greater again. We are Gods own state. We remain loyal to the cause of positive change. *Ifeanyi Ndukwe, is an author and newspaper columnist. He writes from Awka* *Convener, Arise, New Abia Movement (ANAM)* |
*By Ifeanyi Ndukwe (Saint) History of politics and humanity would attest to the impact of Martin Luther King Jnr who fought with all diligence for the liberation of the black race in America. You would also agree with me that the famous speech, "I have a dream" set a new dimension in the society of that dispensation that has linger till today. Abia is named Gods Own State due to the prevailing circumstances surrounding its birth. The, then, military administration had planned to expand the horizons of the South Eastern region. More than 30 years down the lane, we have suffered evil-oriented leadership. Virtually, no leader has demonstrated full capacity and integrity in piloting the affairs of the state. It will unfair to treat our sickness with mere imposition of a consensus candidate from either the ruling party, PDP or the opposition. Fellow Abian people, shall we fold our hands and waste another 4years of governance? Shall we place our destinies in half-baked, blurred visioned political representatives? Or shall we continually wish that goodies would flow from the bosom of Aladdin lamp? Not at all. Shall we continue to cry for development and technology driven economy when those heralding our affairs are solely for their selfish gains? Gone are the days of mediocrity. Gone are the days of money politics. Gone are the says of ethnic, religious, or tribal politics. Today's decision will determine our future and the future of our children. Needless to dwell on the insensitive government of Theodore Orji or the brutish and self-centered government of Ikpeazu. Fellow statesmen and good people of Abia, we have suffered enough. When other indigenes of Anambra, Imo, Enugu and especially Ebonyi proud themselves of capital projects viz airports, world class medical facility, range of accredited higher institutions, prompt payment of pensioners and working staff, women and youth empowerment including support in agricultural produce. Our governor smells of what my Professor in school called, " sluggish slumber( excessive sleeping on duty). " Fellow Abians, this is high time we say to no the antics of selfish politicians? Its high time we said no to party and embrace competence and capacity? If we fail to standup to this responsibility of ensuring our dear state gets good representation in all political quarters. Then we have failed our generation. Brethren, i implore you, fellow youths and statemen, mothers and fathers. I appeal to you to make hay while the sun shines. Abia must be greater again. We are Gods own state. We remain loyal to the cause of positive change. A new Abia state is very possible if we choose and vote wisely a candidate of capacity and blueprint to feature in this new dispensation. *Ifeanyi Ndukwe, is an Abia state born author and newspaper columnist.
