The Kenyan shopping mall where
Islamic terrorists are holding
shoppers hostage is on fire as and
a fierce gun battle is underway as
the special forces try to bring an
end to the three day siege.
Witnesses say they have heard
four large explosions at the
Westgate Shopping Centre in
Nairobi and it is feared gunman
inside may blown themselves up
in a suicide bomb attack.
Security forces say they have
freed some but not all of the
hostages.

fire at the shopping mall and
Kenyan soldiers have been seen
moving towards Westgate
A paramedic
runs for cover outside the mall in
Nairobi after a large explosion
was followed by sustained
shooting
Police chief David Kimaiyo said in
a message on Twitter on the third
day of the standoff: ‘Thumbs up
to our multi-agency team, we
have just managed to rescue
some hostages. We’re increasingly
gaining advantage of the
attackers.’
Thick clouds of dense black smoke
billowed from the complex after
a series of loud explosions and
heavy gunfire.
The area around the mall was
teeming with Kenyan soldiers and
armoured personnel carriers, as
emergency workers and reporters
were told to take cover.
Ambulances were also seen
accelerating towards the scene as
aircraft flew overhead.
A Kenyan special forces officer
said troops had moved in to end
the siege with force.
‘I saw them only once, I could
not see them much,” he said. “It
was hide-and-seek, hide-and-
seek, hide-and-seek. In the end
we had to use full force, we had
to finish with these guys.’
This morning it emerged that a
British man had lost his wife and
daughter in the massacre while a
prize winning architect, who had
joint British and Australian
nationality was also among the
dead.
The Foreign Office confirmed
today that four Britons have now
been killed in the atrocity.
Ross Langdon, 33, was killed
alongside his heavily pregnant
Dutch partner Elif Yavuz. The
malaria specialist was just two
weeks away from giving birth.
Kenyan troops have moved in to
end the siege but spokesman for
terror group Al Shabaab Ali
Mohamud Rage said in a
statement posted on an Islamist
website that those held inside will
‘bear the brunt of any force’ used
by soldiers against the militants.

mujahedeen.’
The Al-Qaeda linked group
claimed to be in contact with the
fighters inside the mall and said
the gunmen were battling both
Kenyan and Israeli forces.
As the stand-off entered its third
day, sustained bursts of rapid
gunfire erupted at dawn and
lasted 15 minutes, and soldiers
posted around the complex
ducked for cover.
This was followed by three big
explosions, AFP correspondents at
the scene said.

days of the signing, they come
back to pick the person, tie a
piece of cloth around his mouth
and take him out of the cell, not
to be seen again.
The Nigerian Police Special Anti-
Robbery Squad, located in Ikeja
Lagos, may have become the
address for the extrajudicial killing
of Nigerians.
Our source, who was miraculously
released from the command some
time ago, narrated to Ekekeee his
ordeal. He said he saw the way
people were being singled out for
execution night after night.
A night or two before he was
eventually released, after the
intervention of a big elected
government official in Abuja, they
came near the gate of the cell and
shouted the name (which we are
withholding) of their next victim.
On hearing his name, the man
began to sob, and ran to hide in
the toilet. The policemen came
into the cell and threatened
everybody to produce him or be
the ones to replace him. Knowing
the end stared him in the face,
the man eventually came out and
watched his wrists grabbed by the
awaiting hands of the cops. “Shebi
we tell you say you go die?,” they
taunted him. Minutes later, a
gunshot outside the cell told the
detainees what they feared:
another person may have been
executed extra judiciously. Till our
source left the place, he never
saw the man again.
A nursing mother went to see her
husband held in the cell for a long
time. She brought food and N1000
cash for him. The policemen
collected the food and money and
asked her to go back, promising
they would deliver the items to
the man. However, our source
said the man had been executed a
month earlier.
Ekekeee sought to confirm the
knowledge of these happenings
from four different police officers
at different locations in Lagos.
While pleading anonymity, they all
confirmed that cases handled at
the Ikeja Special Anti-Robbery
Squad (SARS) are cases ‘between
life and death”.
One police source specifically told
us; “Anybody wey go there no dey
come back”.
When we asked him why they
don’t take the suspects to court
since it is the courts that have the
constitutional powers to decide
matters of execution of offenders,
he said that the police don’t trust
the courts. “Dem go release them.
And if them release them, our
life no safe again.”
After execution, the bodies of
their victims are dumped inside a
canal in either Ikorodu or Lagos
Island.
Ekekeee called the Lagos State
Police Public Relations Officer,
Ngozi Braide, to confirm if she is
aware that this happens in Ikeja, a
man who said he was her Personal
Assistant took the call and gave
our reporter another number
which he claimed was her direct
line. We called the line twice, it
rang without being picked.

her comments, and up till when
this report was being published,
received no response.

A police corporal Bitrus Andrew
yesterday shot dead one Assistant
Superintendent Olosuji Elegbede
at a police compound in Gashua
town in Yobe State over a quarrel
caused by a girlfriend to both of
them.
Weekly Trust gathered that the
incident occurred at about
9:05am after all efforts by a
divisional police officer to resolve
the issue failed.
A witness said the police
corporal, popularly called Kwaba
was bitter that his superior officer
snatched a girl he has been
befriending for the past eight
years.
He said the junior officer was not
happy that the divisional police
officer rather than tell the
assistant superintendent to leave
the lady for him, warned him
that it is a disrespectful act to
befriend his superior officer’s
woman.
“The corporal picked up his rifle
and shot the assistant
superintendent five times on his
chest and he dropped down and
was taken to a hospital, where he
was confirmed dead,” the witness
said.
Another witness said Corporal
Bitrus has been befriending the
lady for over eight years, while
the superior officer was just
posted to the division.
“You know how ladies behave, the
guy was a senior officer and had a
car, so she forgot all the good
time Bitrus had with her for over
eight years and started going out
with Olosuji,” he said
Reacting, Yobe State Police
Commissioner, Sanusi Ahmed
Rufa’i, confirmed the incident and
said that the assistant
superintendent was shot dead by
the corporal while trying to settle
a misunderstanding that ensued
between the corporal and his
wife.
He said that the killer corporal
was arrested, while the corpse is

BENIN -THERE was confusion Saturday at the Benin Airport and in what seems to be a serious security breach on a local flight, as a teenage boy stowed away allegedly in the tyre hold of an Arik Aircraft from Benin to Lagos.

The Aircraft with registration number, 5N-MJG Flight 44, left Benin Airport at 9am for Lagos. Top officials of the Edo state government were on board the airline. Passengers aboard the airline were shocked when security agents found the teenager at the Lagos Airport after the aircraft landed.

Though none of the officials at the Benin Airport agreed to comment on the issue, but Vanguard observed that the teenager whose name is yet to be ascertained may have entered the airport through the Akenzua road axis due to lack of perimeter fencing at the Airport.

ABUJA— THE Federal Government
and the Academic Staff Union of
Universities, ASUU, will meet
today on the ongoing strike
embarked upon by university
lecturers over the non-
implementation of the 2009 FG/
ASUU agreement.
This came against the backdrop of
Minister of Labour and
Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu’s
denial of a newspaper report that
the Federal Government
agreement with ASUU could not
work.
The minister said he never made
such a statement and that he only
appealed to the union to return
to the classrooms while
negotiations continued.
Last week, the two opposing sides
had met with the Senate and
House of Representatives Joint
Committee on Education to find a
solution to the crisis, so students
could go back to school, but the
meeting ended in deadlock and
the two groups were told to go
back and review their positions to
come back on a latter date.
But the Minister of Education,
Professor Ruqayyatu Rufa’I, while
fielding questions from newsmen,
yesterday, disclosed that the
Federal Government had no other
option than to meet with the
union to resolve the crisis, so
students can return to school.
Prof. Rufa’I said: “Government
has no option but to make efforts
to resolve ASUU crisis. Mr.
President is concerned, everybody
is concerned, definitely, efforts
will have to be made to have
students back in classrooms.
“So we are pleading with our
colleagues in ASUU to call off the
strike but we are meeting with
them, we are meeting tomorrow
(today).

of Universities, ASUU, Dr. Nasir
Fagge, has said Nigeria’s economy
had been taken over by Chinese
as leaders in Nigeria have refused
to provide quality education to
the people, while the Chinese
government trained its people in
all sectors with the necessary
facilities.
Dr. Fagge in an interview with
Vanguard said Nigeria’s economy
will continue to dwindle except
leaders of the country provided
universities with adequate
facilities to give qualitative
education to the youths.
He said: “The thing about it is
that, if other countries are
investing about 28-30 per cent of
their annual budget in education,
typically Ghana, even this year,
Ghana has committed 28 per cent
of its total budget to education, if
they can do it, why not Nigeria.
“Is it because we are under the
dictates of IMF and World Bank,
don’t we want to do what is right,
must our children continue to go
to Ghanaian university for
education, must our people be
leaving our country, be brain-
drained to other countries to go
and develop their economies,
must we continue this way”?
“Even now, what is happening is
that the Chinese have taken over
our economy simply because they
have trained their people, they
have educated their people and
their people can compete any
where in the World that is why
our President is going to China to
go and sign MoU (Memorandum
of Understanding).
“Why cant we do the same, why
cant we train our people and give
them quality education so that we
will also be exporting them to go
and carry out assignments in
other countries and then bring
foreign exchange for our country
and then we will not need to be
importing people to come and do
some sundry projects in our
country.
“Most of the key contracts now
are being forwarded to Chinese
companies; all our companies are
down simply because we have not
paid high premium to our
education sector that is what we
are saying. Are we happy with
what we are producing as
graduates? We are not that is
what we are crying out for.
“Let people understand that it is
the pride of an intellectual to
produce a well rounded
intellectual who is even better
than himself, but that is not what
we are having. We are having
people because we don’t have the
facilities to give them state of-
the-art training and we are crying
out and people are telling us all
sorts of things.”
ASUU president, who expressed
optimism that the agreement the
union entered into with the
federal government would be
implemented, also decried the
moving in droves of Nigerian
students to Ghana, since he
country paid more attention to
the education sector.
“This thing that they are saying
agreement cannot be
implemented, we have heard it
before. Prof. Ben Nwabueze was
always in the media when he was
the Minister of Education saying
that it was an agreement of
