READ INTERVIEW WITH NOUN's BEST Graduating STUDENT, MR ADEBAYO FABIYI. CGPA 4.88

I skipped meals, slept few hours during exams —NOUN best graduating student

With a 4.88 Cumulative Grade Points Average in Environmental Science and Resource Management, Mr. Adebayo Fabiyi emerged the Overall Best Graduating Student at the National Open University of Nigeria last Saturday. He shares his experience in this interview with OLALEYE ALUKO. Excerpts:

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND??

I am from the Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State. I am 35 years-old and married with three children. I was admitted to the National Open University of Nigeria, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, campus for a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Science and Resource Management. Earlier, I attended the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State, where I obtained a Higher National Diploma in Chemistry. But I wanted a university degree.

Although I wanted to go to other universities, I chose NOUN because of my tight schedule at work. I was actually interested in Environmental Chemistry, but NOUN did not offer the course. So I settled for Environmental INSTITUTION

DID YOU PLAN TO FINISH AS THE OVERALL BEST GRADUATING STUDENT OF THE INSTITUTION??

Sincerely, when I was coming into the programme, I only made up my mind to excel. My belief was that anything worth doing at all was worth doing well. There was this enthusiasm in me. I wanted to succeed. My motto was that whatever your hands find to do, do it very well.

My ambition initially was to get a Five-Point perfect grade. Unfortunately in my first semester, I got a Grade B and that hope was dashed. In spite of this setback, I was determined to get the best I could get from the programme.

I tried my best and finally, came out with a 4.88 CGPA. I think that is fair enough. If I aimed for the sky and I got the roof, I think I have tried. But at the Masters’ level, I think I would still like to get a five-point grade.

WHAT FACTORS INSPIRED YOUR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE??

My wife is one of the factors. She was very supportive. She was a huge source of inspiration to me. I think my children played an important role in my success, too. Whenever it was time to study for the examinations, they cooperated with me. I have a small study room where I read. Whenever I entered that room, they knew it was time not to disturb me and they gave me space. My wife also made sure I did not fall asleep during those periods.

After many days without enough sleep, I grew very lean. Some days, during examinations, I had to forego my meals. If I ate, I would become very heavy and sleepy. Sometimes, for a whole day I drank only water and fruit juice. I did not sleep for more than one hour daily and this continued for about three weeks. But, I slept well before the examinations.

WHAT OTHER SACRIFICES DID YOU MAKE FOR THIS PROGRAMME??

The biggest sacrifice, for me, was not sleeping as much as I should. I am someone who loves to sleep. I enjoy sleeping, but I had to stay awake most of the time to achieve this dream. My wife and children were with me at the convocation. I think my wife was even more excited than everybody else. She said that she could not imagine getting handshakes from top professors because her husband emerged as the overall best graduating student.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO THE GOVERNMENT ON JOB CREATION FOR TEEMING NIGERIAN GRADUATES??

The government is making some efforts to solve the problem, but I think it can be done better. The private industries can also create more spaces.

THINGS YOU NEED TO GET DONE THIS WEEK.

Exam is almost here. It wouldn't be good not to prepare well for it or not to do your Tma or have a poor score in it when you can actually get a good score. So these are things you need to get done this week as early as possible.

2. Get all your materials if you haven't.

3. Get your past questions of your courses to help you prepare.

4. Check your TMAs if its completely uploaded.

5. Get your Tma done ASAP.

Dear Students,

In view of the closure of Course and Exam Registration, try as much as possible to complete all registration before 12:00 pm tomorrow 20-12-2017.

Bearing in mind that Course and Exam Registration is of great importance to partially registered students before the stipulated closing date for reasons analysed below!

You won't be permitted to engage in exams and TMA submission if you fail to complete it before the closing time except the portal is reopened.

Registering for courses only without exam is a waste of time, energy and money.

My opining is that, NOUN might consider certain factors assuring a certified percent of students are admitted in the current semester - resulting in extension of Course and Exam Registration Date.

Please, do not rely on my opinion: I am not the VC just a staff

Those who want to register failed courses too shouldn't look back, login to the portal and proceed registration.

GET THESE FACT KNOWN ABOUT THE NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA (NOUN) !!!!!!!

You are limited in several ways by the information available to you. The reason for education in the first place is to learn, to acquire information and skills. You may have heard about NOUN but I think it is time to look into the school and see what the school is offering instead of assuming and reading some erroneous information about the school. With 70 centres and over 500,000 students, I bet a wrong opinion will not change the trend.

Here are 8 things you should know about NOUN. I have written this to allay your misconception and probably give you a perspective on Open University.

1.Open University is a global concept.
Open University did not start in Nigeria; it is a global educational concept that has been around for about 50 years.
Today, there are more than 60 open universities in the world, in countries like USA, Canada, Australia, India, Thailand, UK, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Israel, Malaysia, Netherland, Japan, Greece and some more.
The concept of Open University was founded on the belief that communications technology could bring high quality degree-level learning to people who had not had the opportunity to attend traditional campus universities.

2.NOUN has increased access to education
NOUN offers amazing flexibility. It increases access to education for those who otherwise have no other opportunities due to work, family, age or physical limitations.
NOUN allows you to change your study centre, thus you are not affected by transfer at work or change of environment.
NOUN has come as a blessing to Police, NSCDC, NURTW, Prisons, Public servants and other students who want to study further while continuing with jobs or who might not be able to attend a full-time.

3.NOUN is a Federal Government School
As a Federal Government University, NOUN is favored. There is no fear of credibility or authenticity of license.
NOUN is NUC approved for graduates, Masters and Ph.D programmes. NUC approval is the ultimate; it is what makes university a university in Nigeria.

4.No Union action or strike
It is common in Nigeria to add one or two years to when you are suppose to graduate. ASUU strike and student protest are some of the factors that can elongate your years in the university.
At NOUN, no union action or strike necessitate you to wait few more years before you graduate, you are almost certain of your year of graduation even from the beginning.

5.NYSC Exception Letters
NYSC was not created to confirm university degrees. NYSC certificate is just saying “you have served Nigeria”
