Politics / Alleged Forgery: Buhari, Saraki In War Of Words by sammieguze(m): 6:02am On Jun 28, 2016 |
President Muhammadu Buhari and the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, on Monday kicked off an open war of words following the arraignment in court of the senate president and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, for alleged forgery of the rules of the upper legislative chamber. Messrs Saraki and Ekweremadu were charged for alleged conspiracy and forgery of Senate Standing Rules with which the Senate presiding officers were elected and inaugurated on June 9, 2015. Also charged were the former Clerk to the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa and his deputy, Ben Efeturi. All four were granted bail by Justice Yusuf Haliru of the FCT High Court after meeting the conditions. Mr. Saraki was the first to fire a salvo at the presidency when he, shortly after leaving court, alleged that “a government within government,” had effectively taken control of the Buhari administration. Before the open confrontation both the president and the senate president had largely used proxies in the titanic political battle that has dragged on for over a year now. In a statement he personally signed, Mr. Saraki said the charges of forgery pressed against him and other alleged conspirators represented “another phase in the relentless persecution of the leadership of the Senate.” He said there had been some forces who had hijacked the apparatus of Mr. Buhari’s executive power to pursue “nefarious agenda”. “This misguided action by the Attorney General begs the question, how does this promote the public interest and benefit the nation?” he said. “At a time when the whole of government should be working together to meet Nigeria’s many challenges, we are once again distracted by the Executive Branch’s inability to move beyond a leadership election among Senate peers. It was not an election of Senate peers and Executive Branch participants.” The embattled senate president said over the years, the senate had worked to foster good relationship with the executive branch and that was informed by the collective interests of all to put aside divisions and get on with the nation’s business. “We risk alienating and losing the support of the very people who have entrusted their national leaders to seek new and creative ways to promote a secure and prosperous Nigeria,” Mr. saraki said. “As leaders and patriots, it is time to rise above partisanship and to move forward together. “However, what has become clear is that there is now a government within the government of President Buhari who have seized the apparatus of Executive powers to pursue their nefarious agenda. According to him, “This latest onslaught on the legislature represents a clear and present danger to the democracy Nigerians fought hard to win and preserve. “The suit filed on behalf of the Federal government suggests that perhaps some forces in the Federal Republic have not fully embraced the fact that the Senate’s rules and procedures govern how the legislative body adjudicates and resolves its own disputes. ” Stating further, Mr. Saraki said he was confidence of survival, adding that he was ready to be jailed as a price for his “refusal to surrender to the subversion of our democracy and the desecration of the Senate.” He added, “Let it be abundantly clear, both as a citizen and as a foremost Legislator, I will continue to rise above all the persecution and distraction that have been visited on me. “In the words of Martin Luther King Junior ‘the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at a time of challenge and controversy”. The senate president said he would remain committed to the responsibilities that his citizenship and his office imposed on him. He said, “I will remain true and committed to the responsibilities that my citizenship and my office impose on me. Without doubt, the highest of those responsibilities is the steadfast refusal to surrender to the subversion of our democracy and the desecration of the Senate. “This is a cross I am prepared to carry. If yielding to the nefarious agenda of a few individuals who are bent in undermining our democracy and destabilising the Federal government to satisfy their selfish interests is the alternative to losing my personal freedom, let the doors of jails be thrown open and I shall be a happy guest.” It’s worthless fiction perhaps caused waking from a troubled sleep – Buhari In his reaction, Mr. Buhari said he regarded Mr. Saraki’s claim of a “government within government” as nothing but calling him a stooge. “This claim by Senator Saraki would have been more worth the while, if it had been backed with more information,” the president said in a statement entitled “Saraki and the Cabal,” by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina. Politics / Alleged 4.7billion Arms Fraud: Fayose’s Close Aide Arrested by sammieguze(m): 7:29pm On Jun 27, 2016 |
Abiodun Agbele, a close aide of Governor Ayodele Fayose has been arrested, insiders at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have told PREMIUM TIMES. Mr. Agbele was arrested in Lagos by operatives of the EFCC who had been on his trail in the past one week over allegations that he received huge public funds from former Minister Musiliu Obanikoro and delivered same to Mr. Fayose. He is currently being detained at the Lagos office of the anti-graft commission, this newspaper learnt. When contacted, the spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said he had not been briefed on the arrest. Lere Olayinka, a spokesperson for Governor Fayose, however, confirmed the arrest. In a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES, Mr. Olayinka said, “Our attention has been drawn to the arrest of Mr Abiodun Agbele by the EFCC and we wish to say that we encourage the EFCC to carry out its investigations without politics as it is being done now. “It must be pointed out that at no time was Mr Abiodun Agbele invited by the EFCC, and if he had been invited, he would have honoured the invitation. Therefore, there is nothing to celebrate in his arrest if it is not political. “As already pointed out, Governor Ayodele Fayose does not have anything to do with any fund from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). He has stated how his election was funded and Zenith Bank that he said funded his election has not denied doing so. “Also, the person said to have been arrested is an adult and will defend himself when the time comes. Subjecting him to media trial as EFCC has been doing since the inception of this government will only give our adversaries momentary sense of joy. “We await reports of EFCC investigations and we hope that the anti-corruption agency will be civil enough to allow an open and transparent trial in competent court of law and not media trial just to get at Governor Fayose because of his uncompromising stance against the misrule of the APC/Buhari led federal government. “Whatever stories being circulated by the EFCC and its political allies can at best be regarded as rumour as we were all in Nigeria when Nigerians were told that $700m cash was found in the House of Mrs Diezani Allison Madueke and the story turned out to be lie. “Finally, like we have maintained, Governor Fayose will remain resolute in making his opinions known on national issues and will not be intimidated.” |

Politics / Tension In Borno As Buhari Seeks Explanation On Malnourished, Dying Idps by sammieguze(m): 9:20pm On Jun 26, 2016 |
There has been panic among Borno officials ahead of a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday. Officials of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, and the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, on Sunday boarded a flight that left Maiduguri ahead of the meeting with the president at the Aso Rock villa. Mr. Buhari is said to be angry at reports that persons displaced by the Boko Haram, who are currently seeking refuge at government owned camps, have been dying of malnutrition. This is despite the billions of naira and materials provided by the federal government, state governments, non-governmental organisations and private individuals to assist the displaced persons. The president is expected to seek explanations especially following the recent statement and photographs released by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) showing malnourished persons in the camps. Last week, the MSF issued a statement saying some 24,000 IDPs are in dire health situation with at least 30 people – mostly children – dying every day. Two weeks ago, the Borno State governor, Kashim Shettima, paid a visit to Bama camp upon receiving reports that hundreds of malnourished persons recently rescued from Boko Haram captivity were dying in a camp in Bama, 75km from Maiduguri, the state capital. Governor Shettima ordered the relocation of 61 children with acute condition of malnutrition to the intensive care unit of the Umaru Shehu Ultramodern Hospital in Maiduguri where they are currently being attended to. Another set of over 400 persons with lesser cases of malnourishment were also moved out of the camp to a special care unit for proper feeding and medication. But before the Governor’s visit to Bama, dozens of the IDPs had died of hunger-induced ailments, an official said. An official at the camp told journalists that “We have been recording daily cases of mortality here in the camp since the soldiers brought in these set of IDPs who had been under the Boko Haram insurgents’ captivity for over two years.” A Borno official that visited the camp recently informed PREMIUM TIMES in Maiduguri that “the local camp officials in Bama could not notice the case of malnutrition in the IDPs hence they continued to feed them with the normal staple foods consumed by the camp inmates.” A philanthropist, Modupe Ozoluwa, also visited the camp together with Mr. Shettima the next day. She later released some pictures showing her carrying one of the malnourished children in Bama. The MSF officials visited the special care centre to treat the sick IDPs. They later issued a damning statement backed by disturbing images of malnutrition and deaths in the camps. “This is the first time MSF has been able to access Bama, but we already know the needs of the people there are beyond critical,” Ghada Hatim, MSF’ head of mission in Nigeria, said. “We are treating malnourished children in medical facilities in Maiduguri and see the trauma on the faces of our patients who have witnessed and survived many horrors. “Bama is largely closed off. We have been told that people including children there half starved to death. According to the accounts given to MSF by displaced people in Bama new graves are appearing on a daily basis. We were told more than 30 people are dying a day due to hunger and illness”. The MSF statement reportedly provoked the presidency who then summoned the Borno officials to Abuja. Some agitated Borno emergency officials, unaware of the president’s plan, blamed the MSF for causing the state such embarrassment by insinuating that the Bama camp could not be accessed. Although the state government is yet to react to the MSF’s statement, an aide of Governor Shettima, who did not want to be quoted because he has not been granted leave to speak on the matter, accused the respected international organisation of insincerity. “The MSF had never visited the camps, even though other aid workers have been going to the camp frequently,” he said. “It was because the Governor visited Bama and brought the sick and malnourished IDPs to Maiduguri after the soldiers of the Nigeria Army rescued them that even the MSF were able to go there to administer medication on them. “But instead of acknowledging our effort they were busy issuing statements claiming credit for what they did not do”. The official provided an unofficial version of the reason for the malnourished and dying IDPs. “The Governor had visited the camp twice and the Deputy Governor too had also visited the camp couple of times and all these while life in the camp was normal,,” he said, “until soldiers rescued these group of malnourished persons early this month and moved them into the Bama camp.” http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/205947-tension-borno-buhari-seeks-explanation-malnourished-dying-idps.html |

Politics / Unpaid Debt: AMCON Set To Take Over Ben Murray-bruce’s Companies, Assets by sammieguze(m): 7:34am On Jun 23, 2016 |
Excerpt there is a last-minutes change in plans, the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) will on Thursday morning take over the assets of three companies belonging to politician Ben Murray-Bruce and his brothers. The assets are being seized following the failure of Senator Ben-Bruce and his brothers to settle an N11 billion loan owed Union Bank and acquired by AMCON. AMCON was established on July 9, 2010, as a key stabilizing and re-vitalizing tool for stabilising the nation’s financial system. Its enabling law empowers it to acquire non-performing loan assets of Nigerian banks at fair values and then put them to economic use in a profitable manner. Mr. Murray Bruce and his brothers, using their companies, had between 2005 and 2007 borrowed various sums of money from Union Bank. After they repeatedly defaulted in paying back, AMCON purchased the loan in 2011 to save the bank from collapsing. AMCON is now seizing the assets belonging to the four companies used in securing the loan – Silverbird Productions Limited, Silverbird Showtime Limited and Silverbird Galleria Limited. The properties include those at 133, Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos, Plot No 1161 (Silverbird Galleria), the plaza at Central Area Cadastral Zone AOO, Abuja, and the magnificent structure located at Abonnema Wharf Road and Abali Park in Port Harcourt City of Rivers State. The planned takeover followed the June 17 interim ordersgranted by Justice Cecilia Olatoregun-Ishola of the Federal High Court, Lagos, in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/790/16 – Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria & 3 Ors. v. Ben Murray Bruce & 4 Ors. The order allows the Receiver/Manager to take possession of the said properties. AMCON had on April 18 appointed a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, appointed Muiz Banire, the receiver/manager over the sprawling properties. Named as defendants in the suits are Senator Murray-Bruce, Guy Murray-Bruce, Michael Murray-Bruce, Guy Murray-Bruce and Jonathan Murray-Bruce, who is the senator’s first son. An AMCON insider said Mr. Banire had concluded arrangements to take over the assets on Thursday morning (today). http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/205776-unpaid-debt-amcon-set-take-ben-murray-bruces-companies-assets.html court order http://media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2016/06/Murray-Bruce_assets.pdf |
Politics / Fayose Threatens To Expose Those Who Funded His Election by sammieguze(m): 6:43am On Jun 23, 2016 |
The Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, has threatened to name those who financed his governorship election in 2014 if they fail to stand up to the harassment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. In a statement in response to EFCC’s allegation that he benefited from the illegal largesse from the office of the National Security Adviser under Sambo Dasuki, Mr. Fayose, on Wednesday, gave indications as to the sources of finances for his election. According to him, Zenith Bank Plc largely funded his election, along with friends and associates who donated to his campaign. The EFCC, in justifying its restriction on the account of the governor, said it had traced funds from the office of the NSA to the accounts of Mr. Fayose and, Musiliu Obanikoro, who is a former Minister of State for Defence. The commission said the funds, amounting to about N4.7billion, was moved from accounts operated by two of Mr. Obanikoro’s sons where it was transferred to Mr. Fayose’s Zenith Bank account. But the governor denied the allegation, saying he had no link with monies from the NSA’s office for which Mr. Dasuki and other leaders in the last PDP government are currently facing trial. “I wish to state further that if it becomes evidently clear that those who willingly provided money for my election can no longer stand by what they did, may be because of threat from the EFCC, I will not hesitate to name names,” he said. The governor also hinted that the bank only last week collected the identity card of Abiodun Agbele, the holder of the account through which it funded his campaign, in desperation to perfect the account apparently after submitting to the harassment of the EFCC. “I must say it categorically that I don’t have any link financially with Obanikoro and I know as a fact that he (Obanikoro) has not; and cannot mention my name, as beneficiary of whatever money any company in which he has interest could have gotten from the ONSA if truly Obanikoro collected money from the ONSA as being claimed by the EFCC,” the governor declared. “Therefore, bringing Obanikoro and his son’s narrative or that the Zenith Bank is telling different stories, having been blackmailed and coerced into submission by the EFCC is a joke that will not fly.” Mr. Fayose also alleged that the bank opened the account for the purpose of the election, and requested him to present a trusted ally with which it would relate with. “In actual fact, the account was opened by Zenith Bank hurriedly at that time and Abiodun Agbele’s identity card which ought to have been collected before the account was opened was only collected last week in the bank’s desperation to perfect the account obviously after submitting to the intimidation and harassment of the EFCC,” he said. The governor described the EFCC’s case against him as “persecution” and a violation of his immunity, urging the anti-graft agency to also beam its searchlights on the funding of the campaigns of the campaigns of President Muhammadu Buhari. The PDP Governors Forum has rallied behind Mr. Fayose condemning the action of the EFCC, particularly the restriction placed on the governor’s bank account. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/205768-fayose-threatens-to-expose-those-who-funded-his-election.html |

Politics / Nigeria Bombs Boko Haram Convoy, 15 Terrorists Killed, Many Wounded by sammieguze(m): 8:51pm On Jun 20, 2016 |
The Nigeria Air Force (NAF) has carried out its first major air campaign under the recently launched ‘Operation Gama-Aiki’ mission, during which 15 Boko Haram insurgents were killed. The terrorists were killed as an Alpha Jet bombed their convoy in the northern part of Borno state, officials said. The aerial bombardment came about 72 hours after the air force commissioned despatched six war planes to tackle the deadly Boko Haram sect in the country’s volatile northeast. NAF’s Operation Gama Aiki, a Hausa-coined nom de guerre which means ‘Finish the Job’, was launched on Friday June 19 with a mission to dislodge remnants of Boko Haram insurgents fleeing Sambisa forest. The spokesman of the Nigerian Air Force, Ayodele Famuyiwa, a group captain, said the insurgents were spotted under trees by one of its intelligence planes, King Air A350i, while on surveillance of the insurgency-ravaged mission. They were immediately bombed, with 15 of them killed and their seven Hilux vans destroyed, Mr. Famuyiwa said. Some wounded terrorists fled with gunshot wounds, the statement said. “The casualty figure was confirmed by ground forces who subsequently consolidated on the gains of the air effort to pursue and inflict further casualty on the fleeing wounded members of the terrorist group,” the statement said. “Troops also confirmed two gun trucks were among vehicles destroyed by the Alpha Jet. Two AK-47 rifles, two RPGs and cache of assorted munitions were recovered. Boko Haram fighters had two weeks ago recaptured the communities around the border with the Niger Republic from where they had been launching attacks on civilians and security forces. Group Captain Famuyiwa, who is the NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, said the surveillance aircraft was able to send quick signals back to the Alpha Jet which came to attack the Boko Haram location and dislodged their movement towards a ground troop location. His Statement reads: “The Air Component of OPERATION LAFIYA DOLE has foiled a plan by Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) to ambush own surface forces harboured at Doron Naira, north of Borno State. Earlier today 19 June 2016, a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) King Air A350i Beechcraft aircraft on Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission sighted a group of BHTs in 7 Hilux vehicles hiding under tress at a location along the axis of advance of own ground forces towards Kangarawa, north of Borno State. “Following this discovery, an Alpha Jet was scrambled to attack the BHT location. The attack was successful as 15 members of the BHTs were killed and the whole vehicles knocked out. The casualty figure was confirmed by ground forces who subsequently consolidated on the gains of the air effort to pursue and inflict further casualty on the fleeing wounded members of the terrorist group. Troops also confirmed 2 gun trucks were among vehicles destroyed by the Alpha Jet as 2 x AK-47 rifles, 2 x RPGs and cache of assorted munitions were recovered. “The latest victory against the BHTs brings to fore the important role of airpower in counterinsurgency operation. In furtherance of this role, the NAF has been relentless in its effort to shape the battlespace and provide favourable environment for own surface forces to operate. “The recent deployment of additional platforms to increase the tempo of air operations at the commencement of OPERATION GAMA AIKI is aimed at fostering this objective. The foiled plan to ambush own surface forces by BHTs shows that the air efforts by the NAF has started to yield the desired results”. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/205618-nigeria-bombs-boko-haram-convoy-15-terrorists-killed-many-wounded.html 5 Likes |

Politics / Former Gov. Akpabio Left N64. 5 Billion Debt – Akwa Ibom Commissioner by sammieguze(m): 11:20am On May 01, 2016 |
The Akwa Ibom State government owed commercial banks N64.5 billion when Udom Emmanuel took over from Godswill Akpabio as governor, the state Commissioner for Finance, Akan Okon, has said. Mr. Okon who spoke, Wednesday, in Uyo during a conversation on #ProsperityWithoutOil, organised by the Independent Newspaper Publishers Association, said the state government decided to restructure the debt into federal government bond so as to lessen the burden of servicing it. “The loan was to be repaid within a period of three years, and the debt servicing obligation was in the region of N3.5 billion every month. “Given what is on ground now, if we receive N7 billion monthly and pay out N3.5 billion, what is left won’t even be enough to do anything,” Mr. Okon said, adding that Akwa Ibom’s monthly revenue from the federation account in the last 10 months wasn’t up to one-sixth of what it used to receive some two to four years ago. He said the window provided by the federal government bond allowed the state to pay back the loan in 20 years. Even at that, Mr. Okon said, “Our cost profile today is much higher than five years ago when we used to receive between N25 billion to N30 billion (monthly)”. “But we are able to use it and the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to make sure that workers salaries are paid.” Both Mr. Okon and Mr. Emmanuel had served in Mr. Akpabio’s government, though briefly. Mr. Okon was finance commissioner, while Mr. Emmanuel was the secretary to the state government. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/202681-former-gov-akpabio-left-n64-5-billion-debt-akwa-ibom-commissioner.html |
