Effect of Dietary Garlic (Allium sativum) Supplementation as Feed Additive on Broiler Performance and Blood Profile


Abstract

This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of incorporating garlic (Allium sativum) powder, as a growth promoter in broiler feed on growth performance, carcass characteristics and blood profile.

Sixty three day-old commercial broiler chicks (Cobb) were reared in an open sided poultry house and divided into three groups of 21 birds each.

The groups were assigned to three diets containing (0, 3 and 5%) garlic powder. Feed and water were offered ad libitum till the termination of the trial after 42 days.

Growth performance parameters and blood parameters were measured. Diet with 3% level of garlic significantly (P <0.05 increased feed intake (3051.6 g), body weight gain (1688.7 g), body weight (1733.8 g) and achieved the best efficiency of feed utilization (1.81 kg feed for one kg meat).

Dressing percentage showed no significant difference (P>0.05) between the various treatments. The highest breast weight was attained by feeding 3% of garlic (250g) and the lowest weight was attained when feeding 5% level (155g).

No significant difference (P>0.05) in both bursa and thymus weights between the different treatments. Spleen weight decreased significantly (P<0.05) by feeding diets containing 3% (1.01g) and 5% (1.23g) garlic powder compared to 0% level (1.67g).

The different levels of garlic has no significant effect (P>0.05) on total red blood cells, packed cells volume, total white blood cells and the differential count of white blood cells including neutrophile, eosinophile, monocytes and lymphocytes.

It is concluded that the incorporation of garlic as feed additive at 3% level significantly enhanced growth and performance of broiler chicks without any side effects as detected by blood profile.

But 5months cockerel is already grown(if well fed with grower mash at the time). Broiler starter from day old to 7-8 wks and finisher until market time. Our ogas may give additional info.

Experimenting what I learnt online. I apologize to my ogas in poultry for deviating the thread slightly. I bought very small quantity of broiler and white cocks yesterday though.

Oga mi, i remain loyal. I have rested my poultry passion 97%. My problems are inability to afford vet for my pullet(25pcs, but all sold now), purchase cage, inadequate funds and lack of ready customer base etc. As a part time backyard farmer, i cant go to the market. But am currently raising small amount of cockerel and recently ventured into micro-rabbitry. I have been following quietly, even d Qsat cable brouhaha lol.

There are rabbits for sale but your location is a challenge.

I dont think those hays are in nigeria. U can only find them in places like America. Hay is simply dry grass, so u can cut some grass, dry them and use it for dry season feeding. Rabbit will also benefit from the protein in moringa, ipil ipil etc.

oga Henry, moringa powder or seed that is being sold? I am currently reading rabbit feeding with sweet potato forage(has protein) , a research by agric sci students in Texas.

What breeds, what do you feed them and prices? I can Nzwhite and Chinchilla.

Firstly, no perfect being. A fact! Having that in mind, my opinion of wife material is a lady willing to balance 'work/career and home/family life'. She is the type that can strive to be supportive, understanding and genuinely loving. She wants to be with u, even in rain days. She gives selfless advice.You may not need to tell her before knowing what the situation requires. If u hav disagreemnt, she still serve u meal, playing her role diligently. She encourages you, she helps u get prepared for work, interview, rest/sleep etc. Helps financially the bit she can give. Making u feel so loved!, that u would want to leave. Someone u dnt hav to robb bank to impress lol. But it must be reciprocated to her, its a two way thing. Even pastor nd wife break up, its only God's grace.
