Ondo State Deputy Governor, Hon Agboola Ajayi, may dump the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) next week for the Zenith Labour Party. Sources said he would join the ZLP which is positioning itself to be a third force in the state. Ajayi resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress in June and contested at the PDP primary in July where he came second after polling 657 votes. He was said to have met with former Governor Olusegun Mimiko for talks on how to be made candidate of the ZLP and be substituted for Hon Rotimi Benjamin who was earlier elected candidate of the party. Sources at ZLP said Ajayi is being considered because of the number of votes he was able to garner at the PDP primaries despite joining the party in late. Ajayi had earlier said he and his followers will remain in the PDP but in another statement he said he was still in consultation and would soon make his position public. https://thenationonlineng.net/ondo-2020-deputy-governor-may-dump-pdp-next-week/

After months of investigation, the Accident and Investigation Bureau (AIB) has revealed why the helicopter, which conveyed Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to Kabba in Kogi state crashed last year. During the last election campaigns, Osinbajo had departed Abuja on February 2, 2019, on a chartered helicopter flight to Kabba in continuation of the family chats and next level engagements. The helicopter, which conveyed the VP, an Agusta Westland (AW139) helicopter with nationality and registration marks 5N-CML, is owned and operated by Caverton Helicopters Limited. It had 12 persons on-board, including the VP, his entourage and three crew members which included the captain, co-pilot and an engineer. The cause of the crash was revealed by the Commissioner of AIB, Akin Olateru in a final report released by the bureau in Abuja on Tuesday. According to the bureau, the crew lost visual contact with the ground and external surroundings. Also, the bureau faulted the crew for inappropriate landing techniques and limited planning before commencement of the flight. Giving details of what led to the crash in Kabba, Olateru said: “At about 13:46hrs, the helicopter departed Abuja runway 22 for Kabba. “Onboard were 12 persons including the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, his entourage, and three crew members (Pilot, Co-pilot, and an Engineer). “The flight crew stated that they sighted the intended landing area as a result of the cloud of residual dust generated by the downwash of a Police helicopter.” He continued: “After sighting the football field, the flight crew approached with the speed of 20ft to about a 100ft, and entered a hover to land. “At about 50ft above ground level, a brownout set in. The flight crew lost visual contact with the ground and external surroundings. “The co-pilot began radio altitude callouts “35, 30, 25, 20 and 15”. At about 14:34h, the helicopter experienced a hard landing on the right main landing gear and rolled over onto its right side. All persons on board were evacuated uninjured. “The flight crew encountered a brownout condition during the hover to land, which led to the loss of external visual references, spatial disorientation, and loss of situational awareness resulting in a misjudgement of distance and ground clearance, as the flight, the crew tried to control the helicopter’s movements for landing. The helicopter landed hard and rolled over on its right side.” On other factors that may have led to the crash, he said: “Inappropriate landing technique used, non-adherence to company procedures for known or anticipated brownout condition during landing and lack of risk assessment, limited landing site preparation, and planning prior to commencement of the flight.” https://thenationonlineng.net/why-osinbajos-helicopter-crashed-by-aib/

A US-based Nigerian doctor, Dr. Stella Emmanuel, has alleged there is a conspiracy of a group of pharmaceutical practitioners on COVID-19. The radiologist, who said she has singlehandedly treated over 350 COVID-19, with no record of death, most of them elderly with underlying ailments, said she has been getting death threats and ran to the white House to expose the conspiracy. She claimed COVID-19 has a cure and there is no need to wear a mask or create social distance. Fearing for her life, she made a recorded speech to tell the world that there is nothing to fear. According to her: "I’m Dr Stella Emmanuel I’m a primary care physician in Houston Texas. "I actually went to medical school in West Africa, Nigeria, where I took care of malaria patients treated with hydroxychloroquine and stuff like that so I’m actually used to these medications "I’m here because I have personally treated over 350 patients with COVID, patients that have diabetes patients that have high blood pressure patients that have asthma or people at my oldest person is 92, 87-year-olds and the result has been the same. " I put them on hydroxychloroquine, I put them on zinc, I put them on Zithromax and they are all well; for the past few months I’ve taken care of over 350 patients. "I have not lost one patient and on top of that I’ve put myself my staff and many doctors that I know on same drug for prevention. "We see 10 to 15 COVID-19 patients every day. We give them breathing treatments, we only wear surgical mask. "None of us has gotten sick, it works, so right now and I came here to Washington DC to say America nobody needs to die with this study that made me start using hydroxychloroquine." She said even research has shown that hiccup is a sympton of COVID-19 and is treated also with hydroxychloroquine. "They definitely know that hydroxycholoquine is working. I’m upset, why I’m upset is that I see people that cannot breathe walk-in. " I see diabetics sitting in my office knowing that this is a death sentence and they can breathe and I hold them and I tell them it’s going to be okay you’re going to leave and we treat them and they leave. "No one has died. So if some fake science, some persons sponsored by all these fake Pharma companies come out to say it doesn’t work, I can tell you categorically is fake science. "I want to know who is behind it because there is no way I can treat 350 patients and counting and nobody is dead. "So I came here to Washington DC to tell America nobody needs to get sick. This virus has a cure it is called hydroxychloroquine, zinc and zithromax. " I don’t even want to talk about mask… hello you don’t need mask. I know they don’t want to open schools now, but you don’t need these people to be locked down. "There is prevention and there is a cure and let me tell you something all you fake doctors out there, that tell me this is a double-blinded study. "You want a double-blinded study when people are dying it’s unethical." She said she has been threatened because of her stand, alleging "they have called me, they have threatened. I mean, I’ve gotten all kinds of threats. "I don’t care. You can report me to the Board. You can kill me you can do whatever but do not let Americans die anymore "I’m here to say, America, there is a cure for COVID, all this foolishness is not supposed to happen. "There is a cure for COVID. There is a cure for COVID. it’s called hydroxycholoqione, is called zinc, is called zitromax and it is time for the grassroots to wake up and say No, we’re not gonna take this any longer, we’re not gonna die. "So guys we don’t need to die there is a cure for COVID-19," Emmanuel said. https://thenationonlineng.net/my-life-in-danger-us-based-nigerian-doctor-cries-out/

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has explained that its acting Managing Director, Prof. Keme Pondei, collapsed at the National Assembly because he ignored his doctors' advice on his state of health. A statement signed by the Director, Corporate Affairs, Charles Odili, said Pondei has been ill for the past two weeks but that his condition deteriorated Monday morning necessitating his doctors to advise him against attending the hearing. Odili said: "The commission wishes to disclose that Prof Pondei has been ill for the past two weeks. This morning, his condition deteriorated, and his doctors advised against attending the hearing. "However, he ignored his doctors’ advice because of the realisation that his traducers will use his absence at the hearing to soil his name and reputation. He thought he could make it through the hearing and take care of his health later. As it turned out, his doctors were right. Prof Pondei is in a stable condition at a clinic in Abuja." Odili said that Pondei assumed office on February 20, 2020 and by May 5, the two arms of the National Assembly ordered a probe of his tenure, two third of which was spent under COVID-19 lockdown conditions. He noted that following his position, Pondei, has an official duty to answer for the activities of the commission and what happened between 2008 – 2012 "which is the subject of another hearing based on the auditor general’s report for the period.” He said: "It would, however, be unfair to hold him personally liable for acts which took place when he was not the head of the Commission. When the two arms of the National Assembly called for a probe, it was over a missing N40bn. The Commission took the rare step of publishing all payments made by it under Prof Pondei. No organisation in Nigeria, public or private has ever got to that level of transparency in our national history. "As this publication undermined the claims of his accusers, the subject of the public hearing changed to ‘financial recklessness’. While this might appear insignificant, it amounted to changing the goal posts to smear a clean man. While misappropriation of N40bn is a matter demanding objective proof, the question of financial recklessness is one open to subjective judgement. "The Commission is delighted that Olubunmi Ojo, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on NDDC has recused himself from the hearing. At the end of the day, everyone has to answer for his role in the misappropriation of the resources of the Commission. "It is this search for answers that led President Muhammadu Buhari, on the request of the nine governors of the region, to institute a forensic audit to probe what happened to the resources of the Commission from 2001 to date. "The Prof Pondei led IMC has committed to the success of that exercise. While we thought there will be a fight back by those who dipped their hands in the cookie’s jar, we never expected this level of boldness and malevolent aggression as witnessed by accusers at hearing and their paid agents through all the media platforms. "The Commission is participating at the hearing, even though it thinks that seeing to the conclusion of the forensic audit will serve the future of the Commission and the Niger Delta region more than the probe of 74 days of activities.” https://thenationonlineng.net/just-in-pondei-ignored-doctors-advice-to-attend-hearing-nddc/

A 29-year-old man has paid the supreme price for telling his friend about a heavy sum his South Africa based elder brother sent to him for the completion of his (elder brother’s) housing project back home in Nigeria. Abuchi Wisdom Nwachukwu, was allegedly murdered by Moses, his friend and colleague, after informing the latter that his elder brother had sent him the sum of N13 million to complete his housing project. Nwachukwu, a native of Isiala-Mbano, Imo State, was allegedly hacked to death by Moses on January 7, 2020, during a night shift at the table water company where they worked in Auchi, Edo State, after which he took possession of Nwachukwu’s phone and ATM card. Moses also went on to behead Nwachukwu’s lifeless body so that it would be recognized, dumping the headless body in a bush close to the company. After getting rid of Nwachukwu, Moses took the latter’s phone and ATM card to some internet fraudsters in Auchi who helped him to withdraw the sum of N2.2 million from Nwachukwu’s account. Thereafter, Moses approached various POS points in the city to withdraw various sums of money. The police were puzzled when they Nwachukwu’s headless body but could not identify him. They took the body to the mortuary while Nwachukwu’s relatives in Imo State as well as his brother in South Africa worried about his sudden disappearance and their inability to reach him on the phone. His South Africa based brother was said to have written a petition to the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, months after he could not locate his brother or hear from him. Operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), headed by Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police, swung into action to unravel the mystery behind Nwachukwu’s disappearance. It was gathered that weeks into their investigation IRT operatives were able to trace the POS transactions Moses did with Nwachukwu’s ATM cards to Benin, Ore and Auchi parts of Edo State. They later arrested him in a hotel in Auchi where he was hiding. Upon interrogation, Moses admitted killing Nwachukwu. He also led IRT operatives to arrest suspected internet fraudsters—Yusuf Sagiru, Tony Bright and Terence Okochukwu—as well as businessman Jahswill Ogbonnaya, who were said to have helped Moses to pull out the sum of N6 million from the account. Upon interrogation, Moses a 27-year-old native of Auchi, said his friend’s ghost had been hunting him since the day he killed him. The Auchi Polytechnic graduate of Mechanical Engineering said: “I work in a table water company in Abely area of Auchi, and I have been working in that company in the last four years. “When Nwachukwu got a job in the factory, I was the person who taught him how to operate the machine, so we became very close friends. “While we were working, Nwachukwu told me about his brother who lives in South Africa and how he has been sending money to build his house for him. “He showed me the alert for the N13 million his brother had just sent to him, saying that he would be travelling to his village to carry out the project. I felt jealous and I decided to steal the money. “Since we were friends, I tricked him and collected his phone password. I went through it and found the PIN for his ATM card. “Few days before the day he would be travelling, we worked on the same shift. I lured him outside the company, stabbed him with a knife and killed him. “I dragged his body into the bush, and because I don’t want people to recognise him easily, I cut off his neck and buried it. Then I took his ATM card to some fraudsters. I gave it to one Yusuf and told him that I needed to hack the account. “We withdrew N2.2 million from the account. I had trouble with Yusuf because he and the people he brought in wanted to cheat me. “I killed him on January 8, 2020 and travelled to Ore and Benin City. I stayed in several hotels and was carrying different women, but Nwachukwu’s spirit started disturbing me. “Whenever I want to sleep, the boy’s spirit will appear to me and will be crying. The girls that were with me would run away, saying that I want to use them for money ritual." https://thenationonlineng.net/man-beheads-colleague-after-seeing-his-n13m-account-balance/

Chief Olusola Oke, the Unity Forum governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is currently absent at the ongoing peace parley of all the governorship aspirants of the party. Also absent at the meeting is Jimi Odimayo and Olayide Adelami. The meeting which is being held at the Heritage Hotel in Akure and presided over by Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, is to see how the party could be united after the primary scheduled to hold next Monday. Spokesman for Chief Oke, Rotimi Ogunleye, said his boss was on a campaign tour of local government areas to woo party members for votes. A total of 12 aspirants were cleared to contest at the APC primary. Aspirants present at the ongoing meeting were Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Mrs. Jumoke Anifowoshe, Engr. Ifeoluwa Oyedele, Ambassador Olusola Iji, Bukola Adetula amongst others. Party sources said some aspirants have commenced moves to be picked as running mate to Governor Akeredolu after the party primary. It was gathered that some members of the Unity Forum were opposed to moves by some aspirants in the forum to be picked as Akeredolu's running mate. A source said Governor Akeredolu is under pressure to conceding the deputy governorship slot to the Unity Forum According to the source, "From Tuesday, we knew where they were going. The governors have made it so ear that they want one of their own, Akeredolu to return as governor. "But unlike previously when some openings were possible in terms of other platforms, it is difficult because making any move to defect to another party means taking a big risk since this is an off season election. "I know of course that our man, Oke, had cleverly sent someone to him but from all indications, the governor appears battle ready for an all out fight without giving room for concessions in any form. "I'm also aware that our patron, Senator Borofice has been mulling the idea of presenting Jimi Odimayo as possible running mate but it not our collective idea so it wont fly. "The fact that the senstor endorsed Jimi before now has even rubbished the idea because if he is actually our leader, he ought not to have single handedly, endorsed Jimi against our popular choice, Oke. "So for him to go ahead and make proposals without c0nsulting others to work nocturnally for Jimi to run with Aketi means nothing good to us; it is unacceptable," he said. https://thenationonlineng.net/breaking-oke-odimayo-absent-at-ondo-apc-aspirants-peace-parley/

"President Muhammadu Buhari received with deep pain the passing of Flying Officer, Tolulope Arotile, condoling with the family on the loss of such a promising officer, whose short stay on earth impacted greatly on the nation, especially in peace and security. "The President salutes Arotile's bravery in the field to protect the country from the onslaught of bandits and terrorists, assuring that her memory will be indelible, and her efforts remembered. "President Buhari commiserates with the Nigerian Air Force, airmen, airwomen and all friends of the deceased, recalling her deft skills in manoeuvring combat helicopters, which he had physically witnessed with pride. "The President sympathises with government and people of Kogi State on the loss. "President Buhari prays that the Almighty God will receive the soul of the departed, and comfort the family she left behind," the statement said. Senate President Ahmad Lawan expressed shock and sadness at the tragic news of the death of Nigeria's first female combat helicopter pilot. Lawan, in a statement by his Special Adviser (Media), Ola Awoniyi, said despite her brief service, the deceased flying officer, 24, left indelible footprints as a dedicated officer and Nigeria's first female combat helicopter pilot. The Senate President commiserated with the government and people of Kogi State over the loss and prayed for her soul to rest in perfect peace. First Lady Aisha Buhari also mourned the late combat helicopter pilot. She expressed her condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, as well as the Nigerian Air Force. “The deceased was an intelligent young woman, a huge potential, a representative of both Nigerian women and youth, and what they could achieve," her tweet said. Minister of Defence Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi expressed shock over her death. Gen. Magashi, in a statement by his Special Assistant Media and Publicity, Mohammad Abdulkadri, said: “We have lost a brave, gallant, courageous and patriotic Nigerian at a time when her service is needed most to upscale the tempo of counter-terrorism and war against banditry plaguing the nation’s security architecture.” Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, in a condolence message in Lokoja by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Onogwu Muhammed, described the late Arotile as not only a combat pilot but a fantastic aviator. He said she reached the sky of her professional calling at a very tender age of 23. “It was with great sorrow and shock that I received the news about the passing of Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile, the first female combat Helicopter Pilot in the history of the Nigerian Airforce. “Late Flying Officer Arotile brought the country to a standstill on the 15th of October 2019 when she was decorated as the first female Combat Helicopter Pilot. “This was a huge honour to her family, Kogi State, the nation and the entire women in the country and beyond,’’ Bello said. The governor said that Arotile was a trained military aviator with a blend of professionalism and patriotism. He said her engagement in air-to-ground combat in rooting out armed bandits and other criminal elements in the country, particularly in the North Central region was a sacrifice that could not be forgotten. “We are devastated by the tragic death of this young promising lady who took bravery to the next level, demystified prejudicial stereotype and flew her parents, state and nation high in honour and professionalism,’’ he said. Bello stressed that the late Arotile had woven her own story into the Nigerian folklore as a patriot who died in defence of her nation. “On behalf of the state, I commiserate with the family of late Flying Officer Arotile over this irreparable loss, and I pray that the Almighty God grants her soul eternal rest; she will be sorely missed,” the governor said. About the late combat pilot The late Arotile graduated at 22 years as one of the best flight students from the NAF Academy which qualified her for the helicopter training she received in South Africa where she came out tops with a commercial pilot licence and proceeded to Italy for training on the Agusta 109 Power Attack Helicopter. She brimmed with confidence and patriotism at the Eagle Square Abuja on February 6, when she introduced the newly acquired Agusta 109 Power Attack Helicopter to Buhari during a ceremony to induct the copter into NAF fleet. Her feats did not come as a surprise to those who knew her. Her colleagues saw her as dutiful, loyal, selfless and patriotic. She was intelligent and a great team player. She helped to wage fierce battles against terrorists and armed bandits in various operations in Northwest. Born on December 13, 1995, in Kaduna State to Mr/Mrs Akintunde Arotile, the deceased officer was passionate about the military since she was a kid. She attended Air Force Primary School, Kaduna (2000 - 2005), Air Force Secondary School, Kaduna (2006- 2011) before she gained admission into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, as a member of 64 Regular Course on September 22, 2012, where she graduated with honours in Mathematics. In an interview last October 15, the late Arotile said: “I joined the military simply out of a passion for it. Being military personnel has been a long time ambition, the carriage and what it stands for are simply exceptional. "Throughout my training, I have always looked towards flying. So, in the fifth year during our training we were selected for the Basic Flying Training, we were five cadets at the NAF Base Kaduna.? So, we started flying there. We completed the ab-intio flying course in 2016/2017, then after a year, I proceeded to South Africa for training. The journey has been very interesting and nice. “Now, I have about 460 hours of flight within 14 months with the helicopter and the major thing I have come to realise in my field is that there is just no break in my career, you just have to keep pushing and doing your best. "My advice to younger ones out there is that they should keep doing their best, they should keep running the race until they finish and they should not set a limit for themselves because the only limit they have is the one they set for themselves." https://thenationonlineng.net/how-first-female-combat-helicopter-pilot-was-killed-by-old-schoolmate/

Afro-pop star Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun popularly known as Wizkid has risen to become one of the biggest artistes in the music industry – and by extension its pop culture – in the last decade. Year in, year out, Wizkid has continued to influence, define and change the genre with power moves that have seen a seeming paradigm shift in the focus of international record labels and management towards Africa. Here are few things to know about the pop star who clocks 30 today: 1. Wizkid was born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun on July 16, 1990, in Surulere, Lagos. He grew up living with 12 sisters; his father, Alhaji M.O Balogun, who is Muslim and a Christian mum, Mrs. Balogun. 2. Wizkid wasn't always known as Wizkid as he used to be called ‘Lil Prinz’ when he just started singing but changed the name in 2006. He went to Ijebu Ode Grammar School and then Lagos State University where he later dropped out. 3. His sojourn in the music industry started at 11 when he was part of a group, ‘Glorious Five’. By the time he was 15, Wizkid had already met OJB Jezreel who he followed closely and watched other big stars like 2Face, Sound Sultan and Neato C. 4. Wizkid's very first single is titled ‘Mami water’. He later signed to Banky W's EME record label in 2009 which was the beginning his rise, he dropped his first studio album ‘Superstar’ in 2009 and released the hit song ‘Holla at your Boy’ in 2010 5. The album ‘Superstar,’ which was released in 2011 under Empire Mates Entertainment, took Wizkid to the length and breadth of the world. In 2014, he dropped the second album 'Ayo,' which had a host of music stars on its feature list. One song that stood out was 'Jaiye Jaiye' featuring the music icon, Femi Kuti. 6. Wizkid has worked with not just big music stars in the country but outside the shores of Nigeria including Drake and Chris Brown. 7. In 2016, Wizkid became the first Nigerian singer to make it to Billboard’s Twitter Last 24 hours chart following his guest feature with Drake on the hit single ‘One Dance’. 8. When it comes to endorsement deals, Wizkid is the cynosure of all eyes especially for notable brands. From Pepsi to MTN and even Glo. In 2019, Wizkid was announced as the headliner for UBA’s strategic corporate market event. 9. Wizkid has three albums to his credit; Superstar (2011), Ayo (2014) and Sounds from the Other Side (2017). 10. Wizkid is a father to three sons. He welcomed his first son, Boluwatife in 2011 at the age of 21 with his then-girlfriend turned baby mama, Shola Ogudugu. In 2016, Wizkid welcomed his second son, Ayodeji with his second baby mama, Binta Diallo. It is true that ‘Ojuelegba’ is the song that drew the attention of the international scene but for the die-hard fans, who were teenagers and young adults in 2010, ‘Holla at your Boy’ remains the song of the decade. Wizkid still wants you to holla at him but he is now Starboy. https://thenationonlineng.net/10-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-wizkid-30/

The National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) has assured the Federal Government of the readiness of private schools under its fold to resume for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and other terminal examinations. The association’s clamour for resumption follows the withdrawal of Nigeria’s participation in the sub-regional examination by the Federal Government over safety reasons Wednesday last week. National President of the association, Chief Yomi Otubela said at a press conference held virtually on Monday that the group had prepared its members for resumption in line with the protocols set by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). He said: “I can vouch for our members that have gone through safety measure in their schools. We are over 100 per cent ready for transitional classes to resume. “NAPPS, as a responsive and responsible association, has shown its readiness to ensure the safe phased reopening of schools for SS3 and SS3 students in private schools in the country by ensuring member schools strictly adhere to the safety protocols recommended by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to prevent the spread of COVID-19 within the school environment. “Even though we appreciate the safety concerns of the Federal Government, private schools are fully prepared for safe reopening of schools with investment already made to procure safety equipment as advised by the NCDC to ensure the safe reopening of schools nationwide.” To prepare, Otubela said member schools had made provision for handwashing, infrared thermometers, sick bay, hand sanitizers, and face masks for workers. He added that relevant workers had been trained on how to manage the children to avoid the spread of the pandemic; seating arrangement adjusted to allow for two-metre distance between the children; and schools decontaminated. Otubela also called on the Federal and State governments to release funds to ministries of education equip public schools with necessary facilities so their candidates could take the examination with their private school counterparts. Lamenting the suspension of the WASSCE, the NAPPS President, who is also the Proprietor of Lagooz Schools, Agege, said it would cause emotional trauma for the affected SS3 pupils who have been preparing for the examination and may cause them to lose interest in education. He also said parents were beginning to demand for refund of examination fees from schools since the news became public. Since only terminal classes would be resuming initially, Otubela said there would be enough room for physical distancing. He also said the government should set up a task force to monitor that schools comply with safety requirements in schools. The NAPPS President thanked the Federal Government for including private schools in the N2.3 trillion stimulus loans for businesses affected by the pandemic and pledge to provide them with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). https://thenationonlineng.net/napps-to-fg-private-schools-ready-to-resume/

The Nigeria Police on Thursday paraded seven members of a gang responsible for robbing three banks in Ondo and Ekiti States between 2019 and the early part of 2020, killing six policemen in the process. Leader of the gang, 42-year old Ojo Tubonsun, who confessed to the crime, said he was grateful to God that they were arrested by the police. Tubonsun was paraded alongside six other members of his gang at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad Headquarters in Abuja. Also paraded were suspects for other offenses including arms dealing, fraud, homicide and kidnapping. Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, who paraded 32 suspects said items recovered from them included one AK-47 rifle, one AK-49 rifle; two pump action rifles, 19 locally made pistols, 129 live cartridges for the pump actions, 145 rounds of live ammunition and one Toyota Corolla salon car. The arrests were made by operatives of the Special Tactical Squad (STS). Mba said Tubonsun’s gang carried out the three robberies between 2019 and the early part of this year. “Between 2019 and the early part of this year, three cases of bank robberies were recorded in Ondo and Ekiti States. Three banks located at Ile-Oluji in Ondo State, Idanre also in Ondo State, as well as Oye in Ekiti State were at different times attacked and robbed by this same gang. “Operatives from STS carried very extensive and intensive investigations into this case that lasted for months and today we are glad that we can present to you the outcome of these comprehensive investigations. Six policemen were killed as a result of those robberies. Four were killed during the robbery at Ile-Oluji in Ondo, while two were killed during the Oye in Ekiti State. A branch of WEMA Bank, a branch of UBA as well as a micro finance bank were attacked in those three operations,” the police spokesman said. Other members of the gang arrested were Ismail Ojo, 25; Victor Owoyemi, 36; Adeniyi John, 42; Sola Oladimeji, 50; Olubadu Fatoye, 41; and Dele Ariyo, 44. Mba said the gang’s operations were highly organized and clinically executed. “They had clear cut division of labour and each member of the group had an assigned role and they played it as effectively as they could. Fatoye and Ariyo were Okada riders who carried out surveillance operations while the robberies were going on. Their roles were to monitor the roles and monitor the advance of the police and other security agencies and keep the group informed of any external incursion into the areas the operations were taking place and they were paid handsomely for it. They all participated in the three operations and got different amounts for their roles.” Confessing to the crime, the gang leader, Tubonsun, said, “We robbed UBA in Oye, Ekiti, I led them inside to go and pack the money, while others were outside. I did the same for the other two banks. At Ile-Oluji, I shared the money. My share was N1.1 million, some got N500, 000, some 350, 000 and so on. At Idanre we also shared the money. At Ile-Oluji, four policemen were killed, at Oye Ekiti, two policemen were killed. “We thank God for God that the police got us arrested because it is the will of God. It was the will of God for the police to arrest us. If not the will of God, it would not be so. God has a purpose for us that is why. We know that we have already sinned. We have sinned against man and God. We have already begged, I personally have begged, for the forgiveness of the Almighty God. I also beg for forgiveness of human beings, and God will help us in Jesus name.” Tubosi, who said he started robbing in 2018, said they carried out the operations using three pump actions, one AK and some locally made guns. He said, “I did not support the killing of the policemen. I was inside. When I came outside and saw they killed two policemen, I blamed them. When I started to blame them, one of them fired my leg. I used hot water and ampiclox to treat the gunshot wounds,” he said. The Police also paraded 33-year Usman Garba for arms dealing. Mba said Garba was arrested while taking arms to bandits in Kaduna. The FPRO said Garba, who moved from Dede in Abuja, was going to deliver 131 rounds of live ammunition to one Sani in Kaduna, when he was arrested by the STS. Also paraded were a car thief, Sunday Ekele, 37 and a gang that specialized in obtaining money from innocent members of the public under false pretense. Mba said the gang engaged in blackmailing, threatening and even kidnapping their victims. The gang at various times fraudulently pretended to be old men, women or children as part of their ploy to defraud unsuspecting members of the public. https://thenationonlineng.net/i-thank-god-the-police-arrested-us-says-gang-leader/

River State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has sacked a Permanent Secretary, Mr. Sunny Okere, with immediate effect for flouting and obstructing the enforcement of the COVID-19 guidelines. He said the sacked permanent secretary had the temerity to chase away officials of the state Ministry of Health, who went to Oyigbo to enforce the established guidelines on public burials. A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Paulinus Nsirim, said the governor spoke on Wednesday in a statewide broadcast. Wike said his action against the permanent secretary would act as as a lesson to all other public officers who might wish to be irresponsible. The governor also appealed to residents of the state to take personal responsibility to curb the spread of Coronavirus. He said with the commencement of inter-state travels and domestic flights, residents must be cautious in relating with friends and relatives coming from heavily impacted areas like Lagos and Abuja in line with the established protocol of 14 days Isolation. He said as at July 8, the COVID-19 samples collected were 4573; samples tested, 3871; total confirmed cases, 1235; discharged cases, 810; active cases, 382and total deaths 43. He said: "From the first days of this virus, we took serious measures and literally set the pace in our country to slow down the spread. "We have noticed that most affected people are resorting to self medication instead of presenting themselves for treatment at the State's Treatment Centres. "Those who experience symptoms of fever, cough, loss of smell or taste and shortness of breath, among others should present themselves for appropriate treatment at the expense of the State Government. "Furthermore, in the face of increasing infections and systemic risk to public health and safety, most residents have continued to disregard the mitigating protocols with reckless abandon. "Public and private transporters, business owners and churches are refusing to adhere to the relevant protocols. "Burial ceremonies are also reportedly being conducted in clear breach of the 50 persons maximum attendance limit such that a serving Permanent Secretary had the temerity to chase away officials of the State Ministry of Health who went to enforce the established guidelines on public burials at Oyigbo" He assured that government would decontaminate public schools to keep them safe for resumption in line with the Federal Government's Guidelines. He said the government was also appraising the prospect of opening markets as soon as it was satisfied that it was safe with appropriate guidelines on social distancing, hand washing and wearing of face masks. Wike announced the setting up of a Joint Taskforce made up of security and civilian personnel to enforce the wearing of face masks. He said that to sustain the progress made in the state, the State Security Council imposed a night time curfew from 8pm to 6am on Bonny Local Government and Onne Community in Eleme Local Government with effect from July 10, 2020 until further notice. The governor assured all health workers, including doctors and nurses that government would continue to cater for their welfare as they continue to serve the state at grave risks to their own lives.
