PoliticsSalihu Lukman: How Fani-Kayode’s Defection To APC Was Stalled by SamuelOamen(op): 5:42pm On Feb 12, 2021
The Director General of the Progressive Governor's Forum (PGF), Salihu Moh. Lukman has said the rejection of former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode by members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from defecting to the party despite meeting with the party leadership is an attestation of the strong internal democratic culture of the party.

In a statement titled "APC, and the Question of Values" on Friday in Abuja on Friday, Lukman said the fact that members were able to reject Fani-Kayode’s attempt to join the party meant the APC has values.

Lukman who is a Chieftain of the ruling party commended the internal democratic credentials of the ruling party, which he said is lacking in the opposition parties, especially the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“Again, we are as a party debating the issue of who should join our party or not represent the qualitative difference between the APC and PDP. If it were PDP, once the National Chairman of the party act on a matter and backed by a serving governor, members can only grumble.

"I am proud to have my voice guaranteed and affirmed by my leaders in APC. As an employee of Governors, it has been a privileged opportunity to speak out openly on matters within the purview of leadership initiative. Rather than my leaders, including our Governors, relating to me as a subordinate who should only take instructions, they recognise and respect my views as a loyal member of the party."

He further said, “The issue of Mr Fani-Kayode’s drifted attempt to join the APC is a clear instance of attempts to manipulate some of our leaders into accepting membership of someone who ought not to have been considered a member of our party. If that was the case in the past, it is better late than never to correct such a mistake.

“As party members, we were able to rise up to the challenge of engaging our leaders. Fortunately, we are able to gain the respect of our leaders and surely, moving forward, issues of who qualifies to be a member of our party will be clarified unambiguously. Maybe this could challenge the PDP and other parties in Nigeria to begin to address issues related to their failings.”

Science/TechnologyNigerian Leads Team To Win Tech Competition In Japan by SamuelOamen(op): 8:00pm On Feb 11, 2021
A Nigerian, Patrick Ocheja and his team have won the Japan Hackathon competition.

Ocheja announced this on February 8, a day after the hackathon ended.

His team presented an idea called Ubuntu Hub, which would help to give offline access to online education in a near real-time manner.

There is an increasing number of edtech solutions that help people learn online in Africa.

However, the number of people that have access to broadband in rural communities is still low.

Other members of the Ubuntu Hub team include Regina Ochonu, Grace Kagho, Patrick Ocheja and Panji Gemilang from Asia.

The team hopes its idea will, in due time, help users access online educational content without necessarily requiring a connection to the internet.

The project is not designed to replace the internet instead it will bring the internet to underserved/unconnected regions and people.

The Japan Hackathon is a 52-hour international event that gathers designers, developers, business developers, project managers, innovators, students and entrepreneurs around the world to solve problems people face in their communities by using advanced technologies

While the hackathon was going on, all four teammates were mentored by experts in business development, design thinking and innovation and machine learning.

As a result of the mentoring received from the experts, Ocheja and his team were able to transform their idea into a viable product that eventually won the Japan Hackathon.

Twelve teams participated in the hackathon while only three emerged winners.

All of them pitched ideas that provide solutions ranging from better vaccination and vaccine tracking to fire-fighting robots, helping parents and schools get the right social-distancing layout for kid’s playroom and auto part and car service maintenance platform.

Of all the ideas, Ubuntu Hub took the first place, Miraculous AI came second and Nadi Surya was the third overall-best idea.

For coming third, Nadi Surya received a cash prize of 100,000 Yen (N364, 233), Miraculous AI got the Startup Kyoto award while the Ubuntu Box went home with 500,000 Yen (N1.8 million).

PoliticsFani-Kayode Moves To Return To APC, Meets Caretaker Chairman, Mai Mala Buni by SamuelOamen(op): 6:39pm On Feb 08, 2021
A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode may be on his way back to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) six years after he left for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Sources close to him informed The Nation he met with chairman, Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) Gov. Mai Mala Buni and Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello at a Guest House in Abuja.

The closed- door meeting, which lasted for about an hour, The Nation learnt, may not be unconnected with fine tuning plans for the return of the former Minister to APC.

Fani-Kayode had earlier met with Governor Bello in his Wuse Zone 6 residence in Abuja before he led the former Minister to the party chairman's Guest House.

Politics2023: Four APC Govs Move To Draft Jonathan Into Race by SamuelOamen(op): 5:36pm On Jan 31, 2021
A grand plot to draft President Goodluck Jonathan into the presidential race has commenced with four All Progtessives Congress (APC) Governors from the North leading the charge, The Nation learnt at the weekend.

It was gathered a group of 10 politicians from the South, comprising notable figures from Bayelsa, home state of the former President, had been given the mandate to begin a media campaign that would midwife the plan.

The group, led by a chieftain of the APC from Bayelsa and Jonathan's political ally, was said to have met on two occasions to discuss the modalities of rolling out the campaign.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said the Northern Governors, wanted the South-South to start the campaign while they play a supportive role in convincing the APC to give its ticket to the former President.

The source said the plot was to first begin a campaign for the South-South to complete its tenure in 2023.

He said: "Ten known politicians mainly from Bayelsa State have come together as a group. Their job is to start a media campaign on the need for the South-South to complete its tenure.

"They believe that since every other zone that produced the President ruled the country for eight years, the South-South should be allowed to complete its tenure.

"The four Northern Governors backing the return of Jonathan in 2023 wanted the South-South to start the campaign first while they play a supportive role in midwifing the process. They want the argument to originate from their zone of interest".

The source said already the 10 crack team had held a meeting with Jonathan and would soon meet with the Northern Governors involved in the project.

He said Jonathan was interested in the project, which was why he had refused to publicly deny his continual linkage to the 2023 presidency on the APC platform.

"The plan of these APC governors is to allow power return to the north after four years since Jonathan is entitled to only four years.

"The North believes that their tenure under the late President Musa Yar'Adua was cut short and they need to quickly return to power after 2023," he said.

He said notable figures in the Bayelsa State Government had agreed to support the move even if it entailed their defections to the APC.

"If the plan goes well, Jonathan will defect to the APC and significant number of politicians in PDP across the South-South including Bayelsa will join him," he said.

A kinsman of Jonathan and public analyst, Wisdom Ikuli, had earlier said there was nothing wrong in the move to bring Jonathan back to Aso Rock.

He said: "If we say we are fighting for equity and we believe in justice and fairness then it demands that the people of South-South should be given the remaining one term because they have done one term. When they complete that one term it will now rotate to another geopolitical zone".

But the source insisted that if some Governors in APC continued to push for Jonathan, it could lead to the disintegration of the ruling party.

Though Jonathan has not publicly declared his intention to run in 2023, he has also not denied having a presidential ambition.

PoliticsNo Eviction Order To Herdsmen In South-West - Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) by SamuelOamen(op): 2:56pm On Jan 25, 2021
The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) has said that there was no eviction order to herdsmen in Ondo State or any part of the South West region.

It said the speech of Ondo Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, was misconstrued in the media and was only directed at government reserve including registration.

Chairman of NGF and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, spoke in Akure at a meeting with the national leadership of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

Dr. Fayemi noted that the statement generated a lot of hoopla which led to what he described as unfortunate development in Oyo State.

He said Akeredolu didn't talk about herdsmen vacating the state but about registration of herdsmen who want to operate within the reserves.

The Ekiti Governor said they are after criminals and not fulani herdsmen.

A male nurse in Indonesia has been suspended after admitting that he stripped off his personal protective equipment (PPE) to have sex in a toilet with a man infected with COVID-19, according to reports.

“It is true that there has been a suspected incident of a same-sex relationship between a health worker and a COVID-19 patient at the Wisma Atlet Emergency Hospital,” said Asep Gunawan of the National Nurses Association.

He said the nurse “must follow legal processing,” the Indonesia Expat reported.

The incident in Jakarta came to light when the patient boasted about the romp on his Twitter account on Friday, according to the UK’s Sun.

He uploaded a screenshot of WhatsApp messages between the Hot couple – including details about lubricants and the size of their genitals, the news outlet reported.

The patient also posted an image of the nurse’s PPE lying on the floor as the pair got it on.

“This case has been transferred to the Central Jakarta Police. We have secured the health worker to become a witness and asked for further information,” said Lt. Col. Arh Herwin of the Regional Military Command.

“Meanwhile, the patient continues to undergo isolation at the Athlete’s House,” he added, referring to a former Olympic athletes accommodation village that was transformed into a coronavirus hospital.

The two men were later administered coronavirus tests. The patient was found to still be positive while the nurse tested negative, officials said.

PoliticsNIMC: No Cause For Panic Over SIM Card Deactivation by SamuelOamen(op): 11:48am On Dec 17, 2020
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Thursday said that there is no cause for panic regarding the two weeks deadline for deactivation of Subscribers Identity Module (SIM) cards that are not linked with users' National Identity Number (NIN).

The Commission explained that adequate arrangements have been made to capture the data of 200 million Nigerians within the next five years.

It added that the steps taken so far to ensure that all subscribers have NIN in their SIM cards are meant to address the security challenges facing the country.

The commission also said the telecommunication operators would be involved in the exercise .

The spokesman of NIMC, Mr. Kayode Adegoke told The Nation that government has approved licensing of over 200 institutions to carry out enrolment " of Nigerians and legal residents into the National Identity Database (NIDB) on behalf of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC)."

Adegoke said the initiative was aimed at addressing the bottlenecks associated with the capturing of citizens data by NIMC.

He added that the method would increase the enrolment centres from the current 1000 to 10000 across the country.

He said the NIMC is desirous of scaling up its assignment to regulatory functions after the completion of the exercise.

Adegoke however explained in a statement that the licensed agents were approved after successfully fulfilling all the conditions in the advertised Expression of Interest (EOI) which was done in 2019 as a first step towards the take off the National Digital Identity Ecosystem project.

He said the breakdown of the successful licensees shows that 16 state governments were licensed, including Abia, Akwa Ibom, Gombe, Lagos, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Oyo, Ogun, Sokoto and Zamfara states.

"The public sector institutions licensed are the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Pension Commission, Central Bank of Nigeria (through the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement Systems Plc), National Population Commission, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joint Tax Board and Nigeria Postal Services," he added.

Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje on Tuesday gave reasons why he dethroned Alhaji Muhammadu Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.

The governor said he took the decision to save the system and the traditional institution from abuse.

Governor Ganduje spoke at the presentation of a book on former President Goodluck Johnathan, authored by a journalist, Bonaventure Philips Melah.

According to him, Sanusi was not the best man for the throne at the time he was appointed in June 2014, saying that the deposed Emir was appointed to spite former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Jonathan had in April 2014, sacked Sanusi as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over claims by the ex CBN Governor that $49 billion was stolen by some persons under the Jonathan administration.

Faulting Sanusi's public outburst over the alleged fraud, Ganduje said the ex CBN Governor ought to have discussed the matter privately with the former President, who in turn could have ordered investigation into the allegation.

Ganduje said Jonathan took a bold step by sacking Sanusi as CBN Governor, even though the action created bad blood in certain circles.

The Kano Governor said: "Jonathan took a bold step in sacking Sanusi as CBN Governor, which created bad blood in certain circles.

"When Sanusi said $49 billion was lost in Jonathan's government, I said in my mind that No, you could have discussed with him (Jonathan) privately.

"You could have given him this clue and then he would know how to investigate even before those who had stolen the money would find a way of hiding the money.

"That statement, I said in my mind was not honourable. That statement created bad blood".

In June 2014, barely two months after he was sacked as CBN Governor, Sanusi got appointed as the Emir of Kano, a position that Ganduje said he did not deserve in the first place.

Governor Ganduje however sacked Sanusi as Emir of Kano on March 9, 2020, a decision the Governor said he took to "save the system and to save the institution".

Sanusi was appointed during the administration of Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in which Ganduje was deputy governor. He succeeded Kwankwaso in 2015.

Sounding derisively jocular, Ganduje said: "Sanusi was appointed Emir of Kano not because he was the best man for the throne but to retaliate what Jonathan did to him.

"That was in order to prove that what Jonathan did to him was wrong and that the people of Kano wanted their son as Emir and therefore they decided to appoint him as Emir.

"But when he was appointed, there were a lot of demonstration with people burning tyres here and there. But because of government backing, he was sustained on the stool.

"When I became governor, (that's why you will laugh), I said yes, the Jonathan medicine is an important medicine.

"That medicine, even though I am not a medical doctor, but that medicine would serve the same purpose, for the same disease and for the same patient.

"So I took my Jonathan medicine and decided to save the system, to save the institution and I applied it effectively. So Jonathan and I are on the same page. Actually, I have no regrets."

HealthSix Side Effects Of Not Drinking Enough Water by SamuelOamen(op): 9:35am On Oct 28, 2020
Drinking water often helps to maintain a healthy balance. Mild dehydration can decrease one's energy level and mental functioning and increase stress on the body while severe dehydration can have far more damaging effects.

To avoid dehydration drink at least eight glasses of water every day as an adult.

The importance of water to the mechanics of the human body cannot be overemphasized. It serves as a lubricant to the digestive system and all other body processes.

The water in our saliva helps facilitate swallowing, ensuring that food slides easily down the esophagus. It also lubricates and allows edibles to move more freely.

The body cells and organs depend on water for their functioning. Without water, living things, including humans will die in a few days.

So, when you don't drink enough water, the underlisted side effects happen.

· Low Energy

When dehydrated, your energy levels drop, and you might feel too tired to continue on with work.

· Higher Risk of Stroke

According to study in BMC Cardiovascular Disorders, not drinking enough water and being dehydrated can raise the risk of strokes and prolong recovery time.

· Slower Metabolism

Your metabolism naturally slows down when you're thirsty and dehydrated.

· Headaches

Since your brain needs water, when it's lacking it can lead to headaches and fatigue.

· Poor Skin

Skin needs to stay hydrated from water to look dewy and young. Not drinking enough can increase the effects of aging and make the skin look dry. With insufficient water, collagen can crack, leading to fine lines and wrinkles.

· Weight Gain

Drinking water can even help you lose weight and lower water retention. So not drinking water can make you add a little weight.

PoliticsHow Hoodlums Looted My Home, Stole Foodstuff, Certificates, Passport - Lagos Law by SamuelOamen(op): 10:14am On Oct 24, 2020
Lagos State House of Assembly Majority Leader, Sanai (SOB) Agunbiade has said that the hoodlums who invaded his home in Ikorodu on Friday October 23, were sponsored to assassinate him.

Agunbiade, who represents Ikorodu Constituency 1, said he got intelligence of the planned attack, but thought it was a rumour.
The lawyer turned lawmaker said when they arrived and didn't find him, they stole his certificates, travel passports of his family, valuables as well as foodstuffs.

Sharing his experiences in a post on his Twitter handle @Sobagunbiade, Agunbiade said the attackers were not #EndSARS protesters.

The Nation recalls that prior to the attack, messages had been circulating on social media that COVID-19 palliatives were being hoarded at a property at Igbogbo, Ikorodu, belonging to Team SOB, the lawmaker's political group.

A similar message on Thursday led to the looting of a Lagos State Government warehouse at Mazamaza where COVID-19 palliatives were stored.

Agunbiade explained his side of the story in a series of tweets titled: "The violent attack on my house: Thank you Ikorodu."

He said: "To God be the glory that the violent attack on my house on friday 23rd October, and the massive destruction of everything therein did not record any fatalities.

"I got intelligence reports of the plan to exterminate me early enough, but I took it as unfounded rumours. Moreso, I was not ready to have security operatives around lest lives be lost. I trusted in God's plan for my life.

"But to those that masterminded and sponsored the carnage for nothing other than political vendetta, I say 'thank you.' We know ourselves in Ikorodu, but God reigns supreme. God will repay every hands involved in the attack in appropriate proportion.

"I am happy to be alive to witness the 2020 anniversary of my birthday on Sunday 25th October. The plan of detractors to delete me before my bithday has failed. To God be the glory.

"Let it be noted that at the peak of covid 19 pandemic, I personally distributed palliatives to my constituents more than three (3) times at my personal expense and recently, my team also shared palliatives to very indigent residents of Ikorodu. All these and many more of efforts aimed at taking care of my constituents are public knowledge as we have a way of ensuring open nomination of beneficiaries.

"And for my bithday on 25th October 2020, I have sent out, through my Media Team, notice of my intention to give support to 50 widows who have already been nominated by different groups in a programme christianed Widows Mite for Widows and also distribute to some vulnerable and indigent individuals across the three local councils of my constituency, some palliative materials donated by the state and federal governments, as well as myself. Those are the materials stolen from my house yesterday. Alhamdullilah.

"My service to Ikorodu since my teenage years up to this present time is already treasured by posterity and remain immutable. God knows I do not deserve the treatment meted on me by the perpetrators of this politically motivated attack and their sponsors, but I seek solace in God.

"It is a truism that no one will attack the property of a mad man, but people of reckoning always suffer vilification. The barbaric event of Friday is though shocking but like a dolphin which is happy even in the middle of giant waves and horrible storm, I am stable and my faith in the mercy and grace of God is very fat.

"For certain the looters are not #Endsars protesters because the youth in Ikorodu engaged in very peaceful and well coordinated protest. The perpetrators of the attack on my house are group of assailants on a mission targeted at my life. They stole my certificates and travelling passports of my family. They emptied my wardrobe and that of my wife and went with other valuables...pure broad day robbery! But we thank God.

"Nigerian politics is indeed very profitable! Ikorodu you have done well for me, I thank you.

"For all of these, I thank God for the preservation of lives. I thank God for his infinite mercies and grace.

"SOB will not go down, no matter how much they try because God is my armour. Whatever the situation, Ise Oluwa n tesiwaju insha Allah!"

PoliticsTompolo Makes First Public Appearance After Six Years by SamuelOamen(op):
Former dreaded militant leader, Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, aka Tompolo, has made his first public appearance after hiding from security agencies for six years.

Tompolo, who led the disbanded Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), went underground immediately after President Muhammadu Buhari was sworn-in in 2015 as the Federal Government deployed troops to fish him out.

The government also declared him wanted through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for ignoring two bench warrants issued against him by the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos following an alleged N45.5bn fraud case.

But the court on July 15, 2019, dismissed all the charges against Global West Vessel Specialist Limited, a company linked to the former Niger Delta militant leader.

Despite the judgment, Tompolo failed to appear in public until October 19, 2020, when sources said he made a sudden appearance at the Egbesu Shrine in his Oporoza country home in Gbaramatu, Delta State.

A picture of his appearance showed the former warlord and his friends dancing, worshipping, and offering Thanksgiving to Egbesu, Ijaw god.

An Egbesu disciple, Bodmas Kemepadei, who confirmed the development, said the appearance of Tompolo, who is the Egbesu Priest, would help to facilitate resolutions of knotty issues in the Niger Delta region.

He said: "As Tompolo disciples and proponents of the Ijaw cause, this celebration to our National God Egbesu, is not just about the vindication and freedom of Tompolo, it is about the military invasion and burning of our communities without any provocation.

"It is about the IOCs that have refused to relocate to the region even after a presidential directive, it is about our people having a fair share of our natural resources, it is about freedom from these Federal Government promoted ailments that our people suffer from.

"We celebrate Tompolo with confidence that these issues will be addressed, we celebrate with our spirits high knowing that the time for resource control is now, let this be a message to all our brothers in struggle, the days of arms are over, we have to engage the FG with intellectualism, we call on all to be part of the resource control agitations, the time is now".

Politics#ENDSARS: Nigerian Youths Have Right To Protest Peacefully - Buhari by SamuelOamen(op): 3:40pm On Oct 19, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari has asserted that Nigerian youths are within their right to peacefully protest while making demands of their leaders.

The President, who made the assertion during a meeting with the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare, however advised the protesters to be wary of unscrupulous elements who would want to hijack their movement to achieve mischief.

Relaying President Buhari's opinion on the ongoing#EndSARS protest, after their meeting in the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, the Minister further revealed that the President had vowed to see the reforms he promised are fully implemented.

Dare, who spoke to State House Correspondents after the meeting, added that President Buhari also appealed to the protesters to give the federal government time to address their demands as the team set up has already gone to work.

"Mr. President said the youths of this country have spoken and he has heard and he has since gone to work for the youths of our country.

"The President promised that he will ensure that the reforms he has promised are met, he will make sure that the reforms are long lasting and that the reforms will deliver for our country a police force that we will be proud of.

"He appreciates the fact that they have brought the SARS issues to the fore through their peaceful protest.

"He recognizes the fact that they have called upon the government to do what is necessary and that as the President and a father, he will make sure that the demands as put forward are met.

"The President said that as far as he is concerned, it's important to allow the younger generation to exercise the freedom to protest and make sure that such protest is in a peaceful manner.

"He said that part of the demands that were made is to make sure that those protesting are protected and that any police officer that has in one way or the other attacked any protesters be brought to book.

"So the President thinks it's a fundamental right, he thinks so long as the protest is peaceful and focused.

"He believes that the youths of this country have the right to demand for certain things," he said
