In a split decision of three-to-two, the Supreme Court on Monday affirmed the nomination of the Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Yobe North Senatorial District for the 25 February general election. In the lead majority judgment, Justice Centus Nweze held that Lawan’s major challenger, Bashir Machina was wrong to have commenced his suit at the trial court via a writ of summons in view of his allegations that the APC acted fraudulently in transmitting Lawan’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as it’s candidate. Justice Nweze held the earlier decisions of the Federal High Court in Yobe and the subsequent one Court of Appeal in Abuja, affirming Machina as the APC candidate for Yobe North “were perverse and must be set aside.” In his lead dissenting opinion Justice Adamu Jauro faulted the APC’s primary held on June 9, 2022,from which Lawan emerged as the party’s candidate. Justice Jauro dismissed the appeal by the APC and awarded a cost of N3m against the party and in favour of Machina. President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to Nigerians to give him seven days to resolve the lingering cash crisis causing economic havocs and heating up the polity. The President also blamed the escalating cash crisis on banks, expressing doubts about their commitment to success of the policy. Buhari spoke during a meeting with the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) to seek solutions to the cash crunch, which they lamented was threatening the good records of the administration in transforming the economy. A statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, after the meeting noted the cash crunch has become a problem across the country from the policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to change high value naira notes with new ones. Buhari said the currency re-design will give a boost to the economy and provide long-term benefits while expressing doubts about the commitment of banks in particular to the success of the policy. “Some banks are inefficient and only concerned about themselves,” the President said, “even if a year is added, problems associated with selfishness and greed won’t go away." He said he had seen television reports about cash shortages and hardship to local businesses and ordinary people, assurrig that the balance of seven of the 10-day extension will be used to crackdown on whatever stood in the way of successful implementation. “I will revert to the CBN and the Minting Company. There will be a decision one way or the other in the remaining seven days of the 10-day extension,” the President assured. The Governors told the President while they agreed that his decision on the renewal of currency was good, its execution had been botched and their constituents were becoming increasingly upset. They told the President as leaders of the government and party in their different states, they were becoming anxious about a slump in the economy and the series of elections that are coming. They requested the President to use his powers to direct the concurrent flourish of the new and old notes till the end of the year. The President said when he considered giving the approval to the policy, he demanded an undertaking from the CBN that no new notes will be printed in a foreign country and they in turn gave him assurances that there was enough capacity, manpower and equipment to print the currency for local needs. He said he needed to go back to find out what was actually happening. Buhari told the Governors that, being closer to the people, he had heard their cries and will act in a way that there will be a solution. Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje told journalists their requests before the President were centered around the cash and petroleum products crises. He said the PGF appealed to the President to allow the new and old naira notes to run concurrently until the old ones die out naturally. “Our request is for the deadline to be shifted. Not only shifted, but the old currency should go along with the new currency until old currency dies a natural death which is possible. He said he will look into that,” he said. https://thenationonlineng.net/updated-buhari-meets-apc-govs-pledges-to-fix-cash-crisis-in-seven-days/

The Federal Government has said the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is officially unaware of elements within the Presidency, which Kaduna Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufa’i, accused of working to sabotage the winning chances of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). El-Rufa’i, during a television interview on Wednesday, alleged plots by some unnamed elements within the Presidency, to make sure the APC candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, loses on February 25. However, the Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed, while reacting to a question raised by State House Correspondents on the allegation, said the government, a product of the ruling APC, was unaware of the plot described by El-Rufa’i, saying that what the government is determined to achieve is a free, fair and credible election. According to him, Buhari is primarily concerned with seeing the elections being credible, not tilted in favour of any particular candidate or against anyone. “One thing I can assure you is that no matter who, this administration is focused and determined to ensure a free and fair election and I think in this administration, the most important person is Mr. President and I think he has shown by words and by deeds that he’s committed to a free, fair and credible election. “Fair, free and credible election actually means not favouring anybody or disadvantaging anybody and everywhere he goes, he makes that very clear, even as recently as Friday, when he was in Daura, he said the same thing. “So, if there's anybody who's working against any candidate, we don't know officially,” he stated. https://thenationonlineng.net/buhari-not-aware-of-anyone-in-villa-working-against-tinubu-fg/

A Lagos lawyer Malcolm E. Omirhobo, who sparked controversy on June 23 by appearing at the Supreme Court in a lawyer's wig, gown mixed with Olokun religious attire, has reverted to a normal barrister's dress code. Omirhobo appeared at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday morning in the full wig, gown, bip, black trousers and shoes. He said "the spirit" asked him to " go normal", adding that he would revert to his religious garb again if it so directed. Responding to journalists' enquiries, Omirhobo said: "I’m led by the spirit to go normal today. Don’t be surprised if you see me the other way tomorrow...so, today is normal." As to whether "the spirit" was in conformity with the ethics of the legal profession and dress code, the lawyer laughed. He said: "What ethics are you talking about? Are you insulting my religion? Don’t try it, don’t insult my religion...the constitution according to the Supreme Court says I should dress according to my religious attire and you are insulting the Supreme Court, behave yourself. "And for those who have got cause against me, please come to my shrine." The human rights lawyer caused a scene on June 23 when he appeared at the Supreme Court in Abuja wearing his religious apparel. Omirhobo, who arrived in the courtroom before the commencement of the day’s proceedings, was bare-footed. He tied a red wrapper atop his black trouser, which he rolled up to his knee. He also had a gourd tied around his neck with a red piece of cloth. He attached a feather to his wig. Omirhobo claimed he was a traditionalist and argued that his decision was based on the Supreme Court's judgement that ruled in favour of Muslim students wearing the hijab in Lagos schools. The Supreme Court on June 17 in an appeal by Lagos State sanctioned the wearing of a head cover (hijab) in public schools by female Muslim students. In a split decision of five to two, a seven-member panel of the Supreme Court (made up of five Muslims and two Christians) had in its majority judgment, dismissed the appeal by Lagos. The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos Monday declined to hear Omirhobo because of his unusual attire. Justice Tijani Ringim adjourned till October 10 for Omirhobo to address the court on whether the law and legal practice permit him to appear that way in court Justice Ringim made the decision following Omirhobo’s bid to litigate two of his suits marked FHC/L/CS/929/2022 between Chief Malcolm Omirhobo) against the Federal Government of Nigeria and others, as well as suit FHC/L/CS/1392/2021 against the Nigeria Army and two others. Omirhobo's appearance was a replica of his June 23 attire before the Supreme Court in Abuja. Like the Abuja episode, his appearance on the court premises in Lagos also caused a stir, with security officials stopping him at the gate. They allowed him in after he identified himself as a lawyer and explained why he was so attired. A crowd, comprising lawyers, litigants, court officials and journalists, gathered, videoing and taking his picture as he walked into the court. But, when his case was called Omirhobo’s attempt to litigate his case before Justice Ringim was unsuccessful, with the judge querying his mode of appearance. Omirhobo's move appears to have emboldened other lawyers. On Tuesday, another lawyer, Dennis Ezekiel, appeared at the Federal High Court in Lagos wearing a rosary on his barrister's attire. He explained that he was exercising his right to religious freedom following the hijab ruling. Mr. Ezekiel said: "My name is Dennis Ezekiel. I'm a Christian, a Catholic and I'm professing my religion by appearing like this in court. It is my right, enshrined in Section 38 of the Constitution and laid down, enunciated by the Supreme Court (in its) judgment (on hijab). So, we have that constitutional right to profess our religion without let or hindrance." https://thenationonlineng.net/hijab-ruling-olokun-lawyer-dumps-religious-attire-reverts-to-wig-gown/

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has cautioned General Superintendent of Deeper life Ministry Pastor William Kumuyi against planned crusade in Aba, Abia State. The group advised him no to go ahead with the crusade in view of the security situation in the Southeast. In a statement from its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB explained criminals, operating as gunmen, could to infiltrate the crusade with government turning around to blame it on the group. It however advised the cleric and other pastors to pray for an end to insecurity and its sponsors in the zone as well as demand justice for late Deborah Yakubu and release of Leah Shuaibu. The statement reads in part: "We wish to advise Pastor Kumuyi of Deeper life Ministry to take note of the security situation in the South East as he comes to Aba for his gospel crusade. "Let him and the organisers of the crusade make sure that nothig happens. The security of this region is not good because of political and criminal activities, therefore we advise him to stop this crusade for security reasons. "IPOB will not allow anyone to die because of this crusade scheduled to hold in Aba. The operation of criminals operating as unknown gunmen infiltrating the events is high and they will blame it on IPOB. "We ask him to pray for an end to the insecurity in Biafra land if he can. We charge Christians and men of God in Biafra land to engage God in fervent prayers to expose all those behind the insecurity in our land. "We equally want them to be united against the Islamic agenda against non Muslims in Nigeria. We had expected them to demand justice for the innocent Deborah Yakubu burnt alive by Muslim fanatics in Sokoto State. Her Killers are walking freely today and 34 lawyers shamelessly volunteered to defend her killers but Christians are just watching them. "The double faced Nigeria security agencies only managed to arrest two of her Killers because they are Muslims but if it were to be in Biafra land all the youths on the street will be in police cell by now while the unlucky ones would have been killed. "How many Igbo or Christian lawyers came to defend our Leader fighting for the freedom of all Biafrans but 34 Muslim lawyers have come in defense of killers of Deborah Yakubu? Is it not time Christians and Men of God woke up to the realities in Nigeria? "They should support Biafra and Oduduwa agitators in their bid to free Biafra and Oduduwa republics from the Islamic bondage in Nigeria so that they will enjoy freedom of worship in both republics. "Leah Shuaibu is still in captivity today because she is a Christian but all the Muslims abducted along with her have since been freed. Christians must support IPOB to liberate them from bondage in Nigeria. "Kumuyi should also pray against wicked Leaders and saboteurs in Biafra land and Nigeria. They are the real problems of the people. Let him use the opportunity to pray against the powers holding people captive in Nigeria in his church in Lagos." https://thenationonlineng.net/call-off-aba-proposed-crusade-ipob-tells-kumuyi/

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has distanced himself from a deleted post on his verified Facebook and Twitter pages condemning the killing of Deborah Samuel after coming under a barrage of threats from fanatics of northern origin who asked him to forget his presidential ambition. The Nation had reported some angry fanatics killed and burnt Deborah over alleged blasphemy at the Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE) Sokoto on Thursday. She was killed in the premises of the College after being accused of insulting Prophet Muhammad (SAW), during a hot argument with fellow students. The post of the former vice president was made around 10:20 p.m on Thursday but Checks by The Nation shows they were deleted less than an hour later. Both posts had generated thousands of reactions and backlashes within minutes, according to a screenshot. Most of the comments were from fundamentalists who warned the politician to stay away from condemning the murder of the Christian student. Read Also: Sultan, Tambuwal condemn lynching of female student The now deleted post of Atiku reads: “There cannot be a justification for such gruesome murder. Deborah Yakubu was murdered, and all those behind her death must be brought to justice,” “My condolences to her family and friends.” In another post in Hausa (also deleted) posted on the verified Hausa Facebook handle of the People's Democratic People (PDP) presidential aspirant, Atiku claimed the post wasn’t from him, stating that any post that does not come with AA should be disregarded. The translated post reads: “This evening I received information that a post was made that doesn’t agree with my orders. I use this to announce that any post without AA is not from me. May God protect - AA." Minutes after Atiku deleted the tweets, tweeps took to their handles to vehemently react to the development hereby making the PDP aspirant trend on Twitter. Popular tweep, Morris Monye said: "Atiku was not really sympathetic. Tried to appease the South, saw reaction from the North, deleted. He feels it’s better not to offend the North than offend the South because Southerners are slaves and will vote for him anyways. Our politicians are the wickedest people on earth." Lecturer Ogbeni Dipo Awojide tweeted: "Such a good tweet from Atiku Abubakar condemning the brutal murder of Deborah Yakubu. It’s really embarrassing it was deleted, especially after his silence about the Pantami saga." Shehu Gazali Sadiq said: "Atiku Abubakar deleted his tweet condemning the murder of Deborah in Sokoto because Muslims are threatening not to vote for him. His ambition is more important than human life." Comedian, Mr Macaroni said: "Atiku deleting the tweet condemning the gruesome murder of Deborah shows what we have been preaching this whole election season. "Politicians don’t care for the people. They only play to the gallery when seeking for our votes. The people must see beyond these gimmicks." Yasir Kabir said: "Let him be informed that he has already lost our vote, and in shaa Allah he'll not be president " Godzilla tweeted: "Atiku Abubakar basically wanted to play politics with the death of a person killed by religious mob, when same people come for him, he deleted his condemnation of their acts, people that in the first place will not vote for him. This man should not be president". https://thenationonlineng.net/alleged-blasphemy-atiku-distances-self-from-deleted-facebook-twitter-posts/
