PoliticsNEC Recommends Postponement Of Petrol Subsidy Removal by SamuelOamen(op): 4:22pm On Apr 27, 2023
The National Economic Council (NEC) has agreed that the plan to remove petrol subsidy should not be executed yet.

It however said all preparatory plans with various segment of government, including States and the incoming administration should be intensified.

Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, who disclosed these to journalists after the Valedictory NEC meeting presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, however added that Council agreed that the subsidy regime must be removed eventually as it is not sustainable.

“Today I was in the National Economic Council, where we discussed the issue of post-subsidy removal. Council agreed that the timing for the removal of subsidy should not be now, but that we should continue with all of the preparation works that needs to be done and that this preparation work has to be done in consultation with the states and other key stakeholders, including representatives of the incoming administration.

“Council agreed that the first subsidy must be removed earlier rather than later because it is not sustainable. We cannot afford it anymore. We have to do it in such a way that the impact of the subsidy is as much as possible, mitigated on the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

“So, this will require looking at alternatives to the post subsidy that needs to be planned for and subsequently put in place but also what needs to be done to support the people that would be most affected as a result of the removal.

“So, we will be working together with representatives of the States. We will have a plan that we will start working on putting the building blocks towards the eventual removal of the fuel subsidy.

“If I May remind the forum, that the budget for 2023 has provision for subsidy only up to June 2023 and also the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) has a provision that requires that all petroleum products must be deregulated 18 months after the effective date of the PMs removal and that period is also up to June 2023," she explained.

PoliticsOld Naira Notes Remain Legal Tender - Supreme Court by SamuelOamen(op): 12:33pm On Feb 15, 2023
The Supreme Court has said its February 8 order barring the Federal Government and its agencies from enforcing the February 10 deadline for the use of old 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes still subsist.

The court made the clarification on Wednesday following complaint by lawyer to Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states, Abdulhakeem Mustapha (SAN) that the Fed Govt and its agencies have failed to comply with the order and have allegedly directed the rejection of the old notes.

Mustapha said the plaintiff filed a notice of none-compliance with the order of the court order made on February 8. And demanded that the court take action against the respondent to protect the dignity of the court.

He added: "That order has been flouted by the government. We are talking of executive lawlessness here. We have filed an affidavit to that effect...We want the court to renew the order for parties to be properly guided."

Justice John Okoro, who presided over a seven-member panel of the court, asked Mustapha to filed a proper application to put forward his complaints and to enable the respondent respond appropriately.

Justice Okoro said there was no need for a renewal of the court's order.

He noted that, since the order made by the court on February 8 was made pending the determination of the motion for injunctions filed by the plaintiff, the order still subsists since the motion was not yet heard.

The court had, in the February 8 ruling, said: "after a careful consideration of this ex-parte application, and the grounds in support of same, this court finds that there is real urgency for this court to intervene by the grant of this application.

"Accordingly, this application is hereby granted as prayed.

"That is to say, an order of interim injunction restraining the Federal Government of Nigeria, either by itself or acting through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and/or the commercial banks, its agents; agencies, corporations, ministries, parastatals, organizations or through any person or persons (natural and artificial) howsoever, from suspending or determining or ending on the 10th of February 2023 the timeframe within which the now older versions of the 200, 500 and 1000 denominations of the naira may no longer be legal tender, pending the hearing and determination of the plaintiffs/applicants’ motion on notice for interlocutory injunction."

The Supreme Court has however fixed February 22 for hearing of the suit filed Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states challenging the propriety the naira swap policy of the Federal Government.

The court chose the date after joining the Attorneys General of Katsina Lagos, CR, Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti and Sokoto states as co-plaintiffs in the earlier suit filed by Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states.

The court also joined the Attorneys General of Edo and Bayelsa states as co-respondents. Both states elected to side with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) originally listed as the sole respondent.

The court ordered that the suits filed by separately by Nasarawa, Rivers and Kano states on the same issue be consolidated with the one filed by Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states.

The court ordered parties to file all necessary documents before the hearing set for next Wednesday.

Justice Okoro, before adjourning, told lawyer to the AGF, Kanu Agabi (SAN) to advise his client to ensure the availability of currency for the people.

"Tell your client to let people have money. If they go to the ATM and the plaintiffs will come and withdraw the case. Make money available to the poor masses.

"You should know that a hungry man is an angry man. I say no more," he said.

Responding, Agabi said Nigerians were only blaming the government for their poverty.

"Many people don't have money. They blame it on the Fed Govt and the AGF. I don't have money too.

"Things have been bad for long. It is not today that the problems started," Agabi said.

Governors Nasir El-Rufai and Yahaya Bello of Kaduna and Kogi states were in court to witness proceedings.

Speaking after the court proceedings, Bello said the states were not at war with the Fed Govt over its cashless policy, but are only concerned about its negative impact on the citizens, who are now denied access to their funds.

PoliticsEmefiele Meets Yakubu, Says CBN Will Not Be Used To Frustrate 2023 Elections by SamuelOamen(op): 5:26pm On Feb 07, 2023
Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emiefele has said that the apex will not allow itself to be used to frustrate the forthcoming general elections.

Emiefele, who spoke when the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof Mahmood Yakubu led 11 National Commissioners on a visit to the Bank, said the CBN will make available every cash needed to pay logistics for the success of the elections.

He was responding to a request from Yakubu that the CBN should find a way of addressing scarcity of currency across the country 17 days to the Presidential and National Assembly elections since some service providers to the commission were "unbanned".

He said: "The CBN will not allow itself to be used as an agent to frustrate the forth coming election which is a positive assignment.

"If you require cash to pay some of your service providers, we will make it available to you. We will not allow ourselves to be seen as agents that frustrate a genuine assignment
".

The INEC chairman had told the CBN Governor the 2023 polls will be the best in Nigeria's history, adding that concerns have however been raised about the processes leading to the elections.

He said while the Commission has transferred all its accounts at the state and national level to the apex bank, some of the services being rendered to the Commission need to be paid for in cash.

PoliticsBREAKING: Supreme Court Declares Lawan Yobe North Senatorial Candidate by SamuelOamen(op):
In a split decision of three-to-two, the Supreme Court on Monday affirmed the nomination of the Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Yobe North Senatorial District for the 25 February general election.

In the lead majority judgment, Justice Centus Nweze held that Lawan’s major challenger, Bashir Machina was wrong to have commenced his suit at the trial court via a writ of summons in view of his allegations that the APC acted fraudulently in transmitting Lawan’s name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as it’s candidate.

Justice Nweze held the earlier decisions of the Federal High Court in Yobe and the subsequent one Court of Appeal in Abuja, affirming Machina as the APC candidate for Yobe North “were perverse and must be set aside.”

In his lead dissenting opinion Justice Adamu Jauro faulted the APC’s primary held on June 9, 2022,from which Lawan emerged as the party’s candidate.

Justice Jauro dismissed the appeal by the APC and awarded a cost of N3m against the party and in favour of Machina.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to Nigerians to give him seven days to resolve the lingering cash crisis causing economic havocs and heating up the polity.

The President also blamed the escalating cash crisis on banks, expressing doubts about their commitment to success of the policy.

Buhari spoke during a meeting with the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) to seek solutions to the cash crunch, which they lamented was threatening the good records of the administration in transforming the economy.

A statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, after the meeting noted the cash crunch has become a problem across the country from the policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to change high value naira notes with new ones.

Buhari said the currency re-design will give a boost to the economy and provide long-term benefits while expressing doubts about the commitment of banks in particular to the success of the policy.

“Some banks are inefficient and only concerned about themselves,” the President said, “even if a year is added, problems associated with selfishness and greed won’t go away."

He said he had seen television reports about cash shortages and hardship to local businesses and ordinary people, assurrig that the balance of seven of the 10-day extension will be used to crackdown on whatever stood in the way of successful implementation.

“I will revert to the CBN and the Minting Company. There will be a decision one way or the other in the remaining seven days of the 10-day extension,” the President assured.

The Governors told the President while they agreed that his decision on the renewal of currency was good, its execution had been botched and their constituents were becoming increasingly upset.

They told the President as leaders of the government and party in their different states, they were becoming anxious about a slump in the economy and the series of elections that are coming. They requested the President to use his powers to direct the concurrent flourish of the new and old notes till the end of the year.

The President said when he considered giving the approval to the policy, he demanded an undertaking from the CBN that no new notes will be printed in a foreign country and they in turn gave him assurances that there was enough capacity, manpower and equipment to print the currency for local needs. He said he needed to go back to find out what was actually happening.

Buhari told the Governors that, being closer to the people, he had heard their cries and will act in a way that there will be a solution.

Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje told journalists their requests before the President were centered around the cash and petroleum products crises.

He said the PGF appealed to the President to allow the new and old naira notes to run concurrently until the old ones die out naturally.

“Our request is for the deadline to be shifted. Not only shifted, but the old currency should go along with the new currency until old currency dies a natural death which is possible. He said he will look into that,” he said.

Governors elected on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) have appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to allow the old and new naira notes co-exist to ease the suffering of Nigerians.

Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who spoke to some journalists in Hausa language on Friday, said that while the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) mopped up over N2 trillion of the old notes, it printed only N300 billion, which he said is not enough.

El-Rufai, who was accompanied by his Kano counterpart, Abdullahi Ganduje, said even if the CBN had wanted to implement the cashless policy, it should have printed half of what it mopped up, for a start, which ought to be N1 trillion.

He said they told the President the masses are suffering and traders are losing their goods due to lack of patronage.

He referred to tomatoes seller that travelled to Lagos with their goods but got nothing because people had no money to buy.

The Governor said they appealed to the President to reconsider his stances.

El-Rufai however said Buhari did not tell them yes or no.

He disclosed Chairman of the Progressive Governors' Forum (PGF), Atiku Bagudu, has gone back to meet the President privately with the hope to convince him.

PoliticsBuhari Not Aware Of Anyone In Villa Working Against Tinubu -- FG by SamuelOamen(op): 5:43pm On Feb 01, 2023
The Federal Government has said the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is officially unaware of elements within the Presidency, which Kaduna Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufa’i, accused of working to sabotage the winning chances of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

El-Rufa’i, during a television interview on Wednesday, alleged plots by some unnamed elements within the Presidency, to make sure the APC candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, loses on February 25.

However, the Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed, while reacting to a question raised by State House Correspondents on the allegation, said the government, a product of the ruling APC, was unaware of the plot described by El-Rufa’i, saying that what the government is determined to achieve is a free, fair and credible election.

According to him, Buhari is primarily concerned with seeing the elections being credible, not tilted in favour of any particular candidate or against anyone.

“One thing I can assure you is that no matter who, this administration is focused and determined to ensure a free and fair election and I think in this administration, the most important person is Mr. President and I think he has shown by words and by deeds that he’s committed to a free, fair
and credible election.

“Fair, free and credible election actually means not favouring anybody or disadvantaging anybody and everywhere he goes, he makes that very clear, even as recently as Friday, when he was in Daura, he said the same thing.

“So, if there's anybody who's working against any candidate, we don't know officially,” he stated.

PoliticsClerics At Shettima's Unveiling Not Hired - Tinubu by SamuelOamen(op): 9:40am On Jul 21, 2022
The presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated the clerics at the unveiling of his running mate Senator Kashim Shettima were not fake.

He said they were at the event, which was open to all, as genuine well-wishers.

The former Lagos Governor, in a statement by The Tinubu Campaign Organisation (TCO), said the viral videos and pictures of the clerics at the event were the handiworks of political distractors.

The statement by Director of Media and Communication of the organisation, Bayo Onanuga, described the development as unwarranted distractions.

APC presented Senator Shettima to the public and its various organs as the running mate to the party's presidential standard-bearer at the well-attended ceremony at Shehu Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.

But many faulted the presence of Christian clerics at the event, alleging they were hired and fake.

But TCO, in a statement, explained: "The event was an open affair, which allowed members of the public to attend, including the clergymen and some others now being derided by hirelings of the opposition.

"We want to say that those clergymen were not fake, not mechanics or yam sellers as the purveyors of hatred have made Nigerians believe in the social media. They are not big names in Christendom yet, they are gradually building up their missions.

"They are church leaders who genuinely believe that Nigerians must eschew politics of hatred and religious bigotry and rather embrace politics of peace and nation building.

"We, therefore, deplore the hysterical twisting of the presence of these men and women in cassocks and the false accusation against our candidates, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Shettima.

"The orchestrated social media sensation over the presence of the men is needless and all calculated to detract from the huge success recorded at the momentous event on Wednesday.

"We believe Nigerians are too wise and discerning to see through this shenanigan. Asiwaju Tinubu and his running mate and our great party are working very hard to provide purposeful leadership and good progressive governance that will improve the quality of life of Nigerians.

"We are well aware that the opposition parties and the sponsors of the social media charade are jittery and threatened by the intimidating political credentials of our candidates. The only way they hope to shift the attention of public scrutiny away from their uninspiring candidates and credentials is to create social media distraction.

"Our campaign is determined on focusing on core governance issues that affect all Nigerians to confront them and make the desired improvements in the standard of living of our people."

PoliticsHijab Ruling: 'olokun' Lawyer Dumps Religious Attire, Reverts To Wig, Gown by SamuelOamen(op): 2:37pm On Jun 29, 2022
A Lagos lawyer Malcolm E. Omirhobo, who sparked controversy on June 23 by appearing at the Supreme Court in a lawyer's wig, gown mixed with Olokun religious attire, has reverted to a normal barrister's dress code.

Omirhobo appeared at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday morning in the full wig, gown, bip, black trousers and shoes.

He said "the spirit" asked him to " go normal", adding that he would revert to his religious garb again if it so directed.

Responding to journalists' enquiries, Omirhobo said: "I’m led by the spirit to go normal today. Don’t be surprised if you see me the other way tomorrow...so, today is normal."

As to whether "the spirit" was in conformity with the ethics of the legal profession and dress code, the lawyer laughed.

He said: "What ethics are you talking about? Are you insulting my religion? Don’t try it, don’t insult my religion...the constitution according to the Supreme Court says I should dress according to my religious attire and you are insulting the Supreme Court, behave yourself.

"And for those who have got cause against me, please come to my shrine."

The human rights lawyer caused a scene on June 23 when he appeared at the Supreme Court in Abuja wearing his religious apparel.

Omirhobo, who arrived in the courtroom before the commencement of the day’s proceedings, was bare-footed. He tied a red wrapper atop his black trouser, which he rolled up to his knee.

He also had a gourd tied around his neck with a red piece of cloth. He attached a feather to his wig.

Omirhobo claimed he was a traditionalist and argued that his decision was based on the Supreme Court's judgement that ruled in favour of Muslim students wearing the hijab in Lagos schools.

The Supreme Court on June 17 in an appeal by Lagos State sanctioned the wearing of a head cover (hijab) in public schools by female Muslim students.

In a split decision of five to two, a seven-member panel of the Supreme Court (made up of five Muslims and two Christians) had in its majority judgment, dismissed the appeal by Lagos.

The Federal High Court sitting in Lagos Monday declined to hear Omirhobo because of his unusual attire.

Justice Tijani Ringim adjourned till October 10 for Omirhobo to address the court on whether the law and legal practice permit him to appear that way in court

Justice Ringim made the decision following Omirhobo’s bid to litigate two of his suits marked FHC/L/CS/929/2022 between Chief Malcolm Omirhobo) against the Federal Government of Nigeria and others, as well as suit FHC/L/CS/1392/2021 against the Nigeria Army and two others.

Omirhobo's appearance was a replica of his June 23 attire before the Supreme Court in Abuja.

Like the Abuja episode, his appearance on the court premises in Lagos also caused a stir, with security officials stopping him at the gate.

They allowed him in after he identified himself as a lawyer and explained why he was so attired.

A crowd, comprising lawyers, litigants, court officials and journalists, gathered, videoing and taking his picture as he walked into the court.

But, when his case was called Omirhobo’s attempt to litigate his case before Justice Ringim was unsuccessful, with the judge querying his mode of appearance.

Omirhobo's move appears to have emboldened other lawyers. On Tuesday, another lawyer, Dennis Ezekiel, appeared at the Federal High Court in Lagos wearing a rosary on his barrister's attire.

He explained that he was exercising his right to religious freedom following the hijab ruling.

Mr. Ezekiel said: "My name is Dennis Ezekiel. I'm a Christian, a Catholic and I'm professing my religion by appearing like this in court. It is my right, enshrined in Section 38 of the Constitution and laid down, enunciated by the Supreme Court (in its) judgment (on hijab). So, we have that constitutional right to profess our religion without let or hindrance."

CrimeCall Off Aba Proposed Crusade, IPOB Tells Kumuyi by SamuelOamen(op): 4:11pm On May 19, 2022
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has cautioned General Superintendent of Deeper life Ministry Pastor William Kumuyi against planned crusade in Aba, Abia State.

The group advised him no to go ahead with the crusade in view of the security situation in the Southeast.

In a statement from its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB explained criminals, operating as gunmen, could to infiltrate the crusade with government turning around to blame it on the group.

It however advised the cleric and other pastors to pray for an end to insecurity and its sponsors in the zone as well as demand justice for late Deborah Yakubu and release of Leah Shuaibu.

The statement reads in part: "We wish to advise Pastor Kumuyi of Deeper life Ministry to take note of the security situation in the South East as he comes to Aba for his gospel crusade.

"Let him and the organisers of the crusade make sure that nothig happens. The security of this region is not good because of political and criminal activities, therefore we advise him to stop this crusade for security reasons.

"IPOB will not allow anyone to die because of this crusade scheduled to hold in Aba. The operation of criminals operating as unknown gunmen infiltrating the events is high and they will blame it on IPOB.

"We ask him to pray for an end to the insecurity in Biafra land if he can. We charge Christians and men of God in Biafra land to engage God in fervent prayers to expose all those behind the insecurity in our land.

"We equally want them to be united against the Islamic agenda against non Muslims in Nigeria. We had expected them to demand justice for the innocent Deborah Yakubu burnt alive by Muslim fanatics in Sokoto State. Her Killers are walking freely today and 34 lawyers shamelessly volunteered to defend her killers but Christians are just watching them.

"The double faced Nigeria security agencies only managed to arrest two of her Killers because they are Muslims but if it were to be in Biafra land all the youths on the street will be in police cell by now while the unlucky ones would have been killed.

"How many Igbo or Christian lawyers came to defend our Leader fighting for the freedom of all Biafrans but 34 Muslim lawyers have come in defense of killers of Deborah Yakubu? Is it not time Christians and Men of God woke up to the realities in Nigeria?

"They should support Biafra and Oduduwa agitators in their bid to free Biafra and Oduduwa republics from the Islamic bondage in Nigeria so that they will enjoy freedom of worship in both republics.

"Leah Shuaibu is still in captivity today because she is a Christian but all the Muslims abducted along with her have since been freed. Christians must support IPOB to liberate them from bondage in Nigeria.

"Kumuyi should also pray against wicked Leaders and saboteurs in Biafra land and Nigeria. They are the real problems of the people. Let him use the opportunity to pray against the powers holding people captive in Nigeria in his church in Lagos."

PoliticsAlleged Blasphemy: Atiku Distances Self From Deleted Facebook, Twitter Posts by SamuelOamen(op): 12:44pm On May 13, 2022
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has distanced himself from a deleted post on his verified Facebook and Twitter pages condemning the killing of Deborah Samuel after coming under a barrage of threats from fanatics of northern origin who asked him to forget his presidential ambition.

The Nation had reported some angry fanatics killed and burnt Deborah over alleged blasphemy at the Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE) Sokoto on Thursday.

She was killed in the premises of the College after being accused of insulting Prophet Muhammad (SAW), during a hot argument with fellow students.

The post of the former vice president was made around 10:20 p.m on Thursday but Checks by The Nation shows they were deleted less than an hour later.

Both posts had generated thousands of reactions and backlashes within minutes, according to a screenshot.

Most of the comments were from fundamentalists who warned the politician to stay away from condemning the murder of the Christian student.

“My condolences to her family and friends.”

In another post in Hausa (also deleted) posted on the verified Hausa Facebook handle of the People's Democratic People (PDP) presidential aspirant, Atiku claimed the post wasn’t from him, stating that any post that does not come with AA should be disregarded.

The translated post reads: “This evening I received information that a post was made that doesn’t agree with my orders. I use this to announce that any post without AA is not from me. May God protect - AA."

Minutes after Atiku deleted the tweets, tweeps took to their handles to vehemently react to the development hereby making the PDP aspirant trend on Twitter.

Popular tweep, Morris Monye said: "Atiku was not really sympathetic. Tried to appease the South, saw reaction from the North, deleted. He feels it’s better not to offend the North than offend the South because Southerners are slaves and will vote for him anyways. Our politicians are the wickedest people on earth."

Lecturer Ogbeni Dipo Awojide tweeted: "Such a good tweet from Atiku Abubakar condemning the brutal murder of Deborah Yakubu. It’s really embarrassing it was deleted, especially after his silence about the Pantami saga."

Comedian, Mr Macaroni said: "Atiku deleting the tweet condemning the gruesome murder of Deborah shows what we have been preaching this whole election season.

"Politicians don’t care for the people. They only play to the gallery when seeking for our votes. The people must see beyond these gimmicks."

Yasir Kabir said: "Let him be informed that he has already lost our vote, and in shaa Allah he'll not be president "

Godzilla tweeted: "Atiku Abubakar basically wanted to play politics with the death of a person killed by religious mob, when same people come for him, he deleted his condemnation of their acts, people that in the first place will not vote for him. This man should not be president".
