The Supreme Court has declared as unlawful and unconstitutional the Executive Order 10 (EO10) issued by President Muhammadu Buhari on the funding of State Judiciary and Legislature. In a split decision on Friday, majority of the court's seven-member panel agreed that the President exceeded his constitutional powers in issuing the EO10. Six out of the seven members of the panel proceeded to void and set aside the EO10. The majority decision also held that it was not the responsibility of the Federal Government to fund the capital and recurrent expenditures of the superior courts created for States under Section six of the Constitution. All the seven members agreed that the States were not entitled to be refunded all they have spent before now to maintain those courts. A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Federal Government to pay N200,000 to four individuals earlier charged with the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. The four, who are now being tried separately on treasonable felony charge, are Bright Chimezie, Chidiebere Onwudike, Benjamin Maduagwu and David Nwaurusi. Justice Binta Nyako, in a ruling on Wednesday, ordered the prosecution to pay each of the defendants N50,000 for stalling proceedings in the case. The judge's position was informed by the complaint by the defence about the absence of the prosecution lawyer in court and that the defendants were subjected to unnecessary hardship of raising funds to attend court from their base outside Abuja. . At the mention of the case, no lawyer appeared for the prosecution. A lawyer, Mrs Adewumi Aluko later walked in mid-way into the proceedings. Mrs.Aluko said she was from the Federal Ministry of Justice and apologised that the the lead prosecuting lawyer, Labaran Magaji travelled abroad. She said the prosecution has two witnesses in court but would not want to proceed in Magaji's absence. She prayed for an adjournment. Although Mrs. Aluko apologised for the prosecution's inability to proceed, Justice Nyako frowned at the prosecution's conduct and counselled it to be more diligent in handling the case. Justice Nyako equally extended similar advice to the defence to stop using frivolous applications to delay proceedings in the case that commenced in 2015. The judge then adjourned till March 17, 2022. https://thenationonlineng.net/ipob-court-orders-fed-govt-to-pay-kanus-associates-n200000/

Former Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has broken his long silence ahead of the 2023 polls. The 58-year-old governed Lagos from 2015 to 2019 but lost his second term bid to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the APC primary. Although Ambode has not announced his intention to contest any political office in 2023, many are insinuating he may vie for an unknown office. Days ago, Ambode inaugurated the turf wicket of Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Cricket Oval. Last year, he revalidated his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at Epe ward and was appointed as Deputy Chairman of the South-West subcommittee of the Contact and Strategy Committee of the APC. Ambode on Tuesday asked Nigerian youths to register and get their permanent voter cards (PVCs) to vote in 2023. The former Lagos governor, in a terse statement shared on his verified social media platforms, thanked supporters for the “overwhelming endorsement” over his “modest contributions” to the growth of Lagos. He said power was in the hands of the youths. Ambode wrote: “After all we have been through, God has been faithful. Thank you for the overwhelming endorsement of our modest contributions to the growth of Lagos. It can only get better for Lagos, and indeed Nigeria. The youths are coming. The power is in their hands. Go and get your Permanent Voters Card (PVC) ready. Your future is NOW!” https://thenationonlineng.net/ex-lagos-gov-ambode-breaks-silence-on-2023/

Reactions have emerged following the death of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Personnel Lance Corporal Ogah Bercy, attached to the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), who died of complications from snakebite in her toilet at the NAF Base Bill Clinton Drive Abuja. Questions on how snakes and other reptiles manage to enter our bathrooms and toilets have been raised and asked by many across social media. Checks by The Nation show that it’s not very common for snakes to be found in toilets. More plumbers have seen snakes under houses or in a roof cavity than in the toilet but however, snakes can get into a toilet through an opening in the sewer. Sewers can be a hiding ground for mice and rats. Snakes can enter the sewer to get their next meal. They can make their way through a sewer and slither their way through. When talking about snakes getting into the toilet sink, some people think or assume that there’s already water inside the toilet sink, but according to plumbers, the toilet seat is designed in such a way that the water stays only in the sink and the pipe that leads to the septic tank or soakaway is always empty and free of water. Most reptiles would find it difficult to jump or enter into the water closets, they always find it easier to enter from the concrete chambers at the back of the house through which sewage pipes get connected and through cracks, under the doors and crevices. Here are some preventive measures to take which will help in avoiding snake(s) curling up in your toilet bowl; The best way to prevent a snake from making its way into your toilet is to make your home less attractive to the snake in the first place. 1. Keep windows and sliding doors in the bathroom closed or ensure the screens are fully intact so a snake can’t slide its way in. 2. Prevent a mouse or rat infestation in your home with the correct rodent protection. Snakes will follow the food trail, so if you have mice or rats near or in your house, get rid of them faster. 3. Always make sure that all the bushes around your house are properly cleared and well burnt so as to prevent any rodents or reptiles from harbouring around the house. 4. Another thing you should take note of is to always ensure you fumigate your toilet sink regularly. There are special pesticides that are made specifically for this purpose. 5. Keep your toilet lid closed at all times and you can also make use of a flat tile to cover your bathroom filter when you’re not in the bathroom so as to stop any further movement of the reptile through the pipes and also ensure that all pipes are well fixed and closed. 6. Lastly, always make sure you check inside your toilet sink before you sit on it, avoid using the toilet in the dark and public toilets are dangerous to use anyhow. If you must use them, don’t sit directly on them, lift up your buttock slightly above the bowl and be watchful. https://thenationonlineng.net/six-ways-to-prevent-snakes-from-getting-into-water-closets-toilet-bowls/

More facts have emerged on how Libyan mercenaries believed to have joined forces with insurgents of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the Northeast, killed Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkusu and three other soldiers in Borno. Chairman Senate Committee on Army, Senator Muhammed Ali Ndume, who spoke on the deadly attack in Abuja, said that the incident has caused panic among residents in the area. Ndume, who represents Borno South in his reaction to the killing of the General, expressed his condolences and described the incident as painful. He lamented that residents are fleeing Askira as ISWAP terrorists are believed to be regrouping in Lake Chad region. Late General Zirkusu, was the commander, 28 Task Force in Chibok. The attack came 24 hours after military airstrikes took out several top commanders of ISWAP while they were allegedly holding a strategic meeting with their new leader, Sani Shuwaram, at Sabon Tumbun and Jibularam, in Marte Local Government Area of the State. Ndume said: “I want to express my condolences to the Nigerian Army over the death of the General who died along Chibok road. ISWAP terrorists attacked a town there. “They know that the General was the major obstacle to their operation. They laid an ambush and rammed a bomb-laddened car into his vehicle. “He was a gallant soldier. He took the fight to the terrorists. His death has sent a panic to people in that area. “I am aware that some people around that Chibok area have started thinking of relocating. “Some want to go to Mubi and other places. We are trying to urge them to remain there. The insurgency is coming to an end.” He was positive that the Nigerian Army has the capability to defeat ISWAP and their Libyan mercenaries. He urged other security agencies and well-meaning residents in the communities to support the military to gain a decisive victory. “This is not the end but the beginning of the end of terrorists. I know that the Army has what it takes to take the fight to them. “There is need to urge other security agencies to give the Army the needed support. We also need to urge vigilante groups to assist them,” he said. He described the attack by ISWAP as a revenge mission saying the assailants arrived the area with 10 gun trucks to carry out the attack. “For now, we will assume that it was an isolated case. But the intensity with which they came is worrisome. “They came with more than 10 gun trucks. They are also regrouping around Borno North. That's Lake Chad axis. The Military is aware and the Air Force is providing surveillance in the area. “It was a revenge mission. The Army has been taking out key ISWAP commanders and they had their revenge. “Last week for instance, they abducted relatives of the Emir of Askira. They also abducted some passengers along that road. If the Army sustains the tempo, we will win this insurgency. “The equipment are arriving gradually. We are monitoring. As a committee, we will go and see what they have brought into the country. This is an improvement. “The Army is very rapid in responding. The Army is involved in about 33 States now. They're under pressure,” Ndume said. https://thenationonlineng.net/how-iswap-killed-army-general-in-borno-by-ndume/ |

The Federal Government has said total lockdown will be the last resort in its strategy to contain spread of Delta variant of COVID-19. It cited the extreme effects of lockdowns on the economy and everyday life. Minister of Health Dr Osagie Ehanire, during the weekly ministerial briefing by the Presidential Communication Team in Abuja, also assured Nigerians the new variant of the virus does not pose the sort of threat that might warrant a lockdown of any form. According to him, countries have become circumspect with imposing total lockdowns as it was seen at the onset of the outbreak. He added that administrators would rather employ precision lockdowns on specific areas of the country under threat. He also revealed apart from the vaccines sourced free of charge, Nigeria has paid for about 30 million doses of Johnson&Johnson doses. According to him, since the prices of the one-shot vaccine have dropped, the country hopes to purchase about 40 million doses of the vaccines in all. Ehanire said the 176,000 doses of the Johnson&Johnson doses have already been received while the rest will come in batches.
