Soldiers have been deployed to the streets of Abuja to arrest the escalating #ENDSARS protests. The protests in Abuja have in some cases have got out of hand with suspected hoodlums attacking protesters as well as pro-SARS groups. The situation has often led to clashes that leave several persons injured with vehicles and other property damaged. There have been reports that a protester, who was stabbed by one of such hoodlums, died in a hospital. Around the popular AYA Roundabout where the protesters had planned to block on Monday, armed soldiers were seen patrolling to ensure flow of traffic. They mounted barricades as they tried to manage the situation. There were reports of similar scenarios in other parts of the city as the protesters divide themselves into groups and operate from various locations. The Nigerian Army recently announced ‘Operation Crocodile Smile’ will kick off from October 20 to December 31. Though the Army Spokesperson Col Musa Sagir has said the exercise has no relationship with any lawful protest under any guise whatsoever, many have insinuated it was meant to break the protests. https://thenationonlineng.net/breaking-soldiers-deployed-to-abuja-over-endsars-protests/

A 30-year-old kidnap suspect, Mohammed Sani, said he killed more than 50 of his victims because they could not afford to pay ransom. Sani, who was paraded by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba, alongside 46 other criminals at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) Headquarters in Abuja, said he carried out his operations mainly within Kaduna, Katsina, Niger and Zamfara. Wearing a fake military uniform, Sani said he worked for one Yellow Jambros, who gave him guns and military uniforms for operations. He said he was a sector commander in their kidnapping ring and had over 120 men under his command. Sani, who said he has lost count of how many kidnap operations he carried out, said any of their victims that paid ransom were allowed to go but those that could not were killed. DCP Mba, who said the suspect was nabbed by men of the Special Tactical Squad (STS), said he has been on their wanted list for a while. “His area of specialty is kidnapping for ransom and banditry. Occasionally he veers into cattle rustling. “He belongs to an organised kidnapping gang that has gone ahead to sectorise their operations. “Mohammed Sani is a sector commander within the larger kidnapping and banditry enterprise. “He has over 100 men directly under his command. Sani reports to another big kidnapper that is on our wanted list known as Yellow Jambros,” Mba said. Also paraded were seven male suspects directly linked with a deadly attack on a bullion van in Abakiliki in Ebonyi on July 29, 2020. Mba said two of them were dismissed soldiers. He said the men, after a very elaborate plan that involved them carrying out surveillance on the movement of the bullion van for over two weeks, eventually carried out the attack on the said date. He said during the attack, four policemen were killed and their rifles taken away but because of reinforcement and courage shown by driver of the bullion van and other operatives, the robbers could not take control of the bullion van and were not successful in stealing any money. Mba said subsequently, the men of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and other detectives carried out a massive investigation that crisscrossed several states of the federation as the IGP ordered a massive manhunt for the suspects. He said concerted efforts eventually led to the arrest of the suspects. “The gang leader is Sunday Seyemi from Bayelsa State. Arms recovered from them include one GPMG rifle with 136 rounds of GPMG ammunition, six AK47 rifles, 61 AK47 magazines, five K2 magazines, 1, 620 rounds of live AK47 ammunition, two sets of army camouflage and assorted charms and other house breaking implements. Two suspects still at large. We are closing up on them and certainly will pick them up. They will be arraigned soon,” Mba said. The Force PRO said 47 suspects were arrested for various offenses including armed robbery, murder, kidnapping, and unlawful possession of firearms among others. Weapons recovered include 321 rounds of AK47 ammunition, nine pistols, 10 AK47 rifles, 864 rounds of live cartridges, 583 pieces of military camouflage, one GPMG rifle and N258, 570 cash. https://thenationonlineng.net/i-killed-50-kidnap-victims-because-they-could-not-pay-ransom/

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors are not leaving anything to chance in their quest to forge alliance with the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) ahead of next Saturday Ondo governorship election. It was gathered the PDP governors reached out to former President Olusegun Obasanjo to talk to leader of the ZLP, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko to support Eyitayo Jegede, the governorship candidate. Sources in the PDP said Obasanjo met with Mimiko in Abuja but details of the meeting were still kept in the wraps. The sources said Mimiko also met with a PDP northern governor at the weekend. After the meeting in Abuja, Mimiko flew to Akure to campaign for the ZLP at Ile-Oluji, Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo local government. Another source said last week's Federal High Court judgement that ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish personal particulars of Agboola Ajayi might be why Mimiko is going into talks with the PDP. A former spokesman of Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation, Segun Sowunmi, has also told journalists in Akure, that PDP was not foreclosing talk with Mimiko He said Mimiko remained a key factor in ensuring the collapse of the ZLP structures into PDP and support Jegede. Some chieftains of the ZLP were also said to have vowed not to follow Mimiko if he opts to dump the party for the PDP. The chieftains, who pleaded anonymity, said: "There is no longer trust among the ZLP party leaders. “Honestly, there is palpable fear in the party at the moment. We are scared that Mimiko may dump Ajayi at the eleventh hours. "If you have been following the political journey of Mimiko, this should not be a surprise to you. He did this to his former boss, former Adebayo Adefarati (late). “In 2003, when Baba was seeking his re-election, he was with him in the morning pledging his loyalty but dumped the late governor in the afternoon to join late Olusegun Agagu's camp. '"In 2018, Mimiko declared his intention to contest 2019 Presidential election under ZLP and having realised that his ambition won't fly, he asked one of his core loyalists, Engr. Gboye Adegbenro, who was already seeking the senate seat under the ZLP to step down for him. "Due to this antecedent of Mimiko, he cannot be trusted. He is full of wonders. Don't be surprised he may even align with an estranged friend, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN if he considers his interest will be protected in the APC family. "Our fresh fears are real and frightening indeed; when we saw that report about the meeting the PDP governors were to hold with him, he complained to someone that it had been leaked to the press and that he would be in Abuja. "For us, we are set for anything that will stop Akeredolu, but if as a leader you are negotiating or holding talks without the candidate there, there will be apprehensions and this is real; we are scared simply because since he returned from Abuja, he didn't say anything about the meeting," he said. But Ajayi described the planned collapse of ZLP structure as rumour sponsored by the drowning PDP. Ajayi urged Jegede to be bold and honest to confess to the general public his campaign was not flying. He called on the purveyors of fake alliance to discontinue using his name to curry favour from the electorates. Ajayi, who spoke through his media Adviser, Sowore Allen, said he has never worked with Jegede and would not under any circumstance work with him towards the October 10 governorship election. https://thenationonlineng.net/ondo-2020-unease-in-zlp-as-obasanjo-meets-mimiko/

The Federal Government has directed tertiary hospitals to engage the services of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to maintain routine services in place of striking resident doctors. Minister of Health Dr Osagie Ehanire said the measure to “mitigate the effect” of the strike by resident doctors across the country. The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) embarked on nationwide strike on Monday over non-payment of their COVID-19 hazard allowance and other demands. To address the absence of resident doctors as a result of the industrial action, Ehanire gave Federal Health institutions four guidelines to comply with. “COVID-19 treatment outlets should continue to function as before; emergency services should continue to run as before; routine services should be maintained with consultants, NYSC Doctors; locum staffers to be brought in when and where necessary to forestall services disruption when applicable and affordable,” the minister said. “I call on the NARD to return to work and engage the Federal Government in completing the ongoing due process of implementing the MoU between NARD and government. “I wish to assure the general public that measures have been put in place to ensure that they continue to access services at all our federal tertiary hospitals across the country,” he said. https://thenationonlineng.net/fg-to-hospitals-replace-striking-doctors-with-nysc-members/

Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest footballer on earth, on Tuesday shocked the sporting world with a transfer request to the club of his dream, FC Barcelona. Many had derided Messi as a one-club player, a criticism he has found amusing wondering why he should leave a club and city he considers his home. But on Tuesday, everything changed. Messi, the ever-loyal Barcelona talisman, asked to leave. Main reasons Messi wants to leave: · Failure to bring back Neymar: Before kick start of the just-concluded 2019/2020 Messi openly asked for return of Neymar, the Brazilian, who left in 2017 for French champions PSG. Messi has a bond that goes beyond the field of play with Neymar. With Suarez, the trio formed the fearsome MSN trident that won the treble in 2015. The Argentine considers Neymar his heir apparent and as he ages wanted an opportunity to pass on the torch. But Messi felt betrayed the Club administrators didn’t push hard enough. Instead they bought Griezmman, who he didn’t quite jell with. Read Also: We want Messi to stay, Barcelona declare · Mediocre signings: Messi has grown increasingly tired of recent signings by Barcelona, many of whom he considered below par. From Dembele to Griezmman, Martin Braithwaite and Paulinho, Messi believes Barcelona were not fortifying well. That left with him with too much workloads on the field of play. · Suarez ill-treatment: New coach Ronald Koeman reportedly called Messi’s buddy Luis Suarez on Monday to tell him he was not wanted for next season. Suarez, who hinted he does not mind a substitute role, was shocked. Messi was infuriated. He believes that was not the way to treat the third highest goal scorer in the history of the team. His decision to leave is partly to fight for Suarez. · Distrust of board: Messi is completely pissed off the board headed by Josep Barmoteu has been portraying the players in a bad light. During the coronavirus pandemic, the players accepted a 70 percent pay cuts but the board alleged they were reluctant, which the players considered in bad taste. Many stories were also planted in Catalan media showing the players in bad light. Messi felt he had had enough and chose to experience a new culture and environment. https://thenationonlineng.net/four-reasons-why-messi-wants-to-leave-barcelona/

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has withdrawn the "stupid" word he used on a Daily Trust reporter. Fani-Kayode had attacked Eyo Charles, a journalist, who asked him a question at a press conference in Calabar, Cross River last week. Fani-Kayode, in a statement on Wednesday, said: "I met with my advisors till late last night and I wish to say the following. I hereby withdraw the word "stupid" which I used in my encounter with a journalist in Calabar. "I have many friends in the media who I offended by losing my cool and using such words. I hereby express my regrets for doing so." "I do however wish to state categorically that no threat of physical harm was ever made to the journalist in question and neither did I send anyone to threaten him. Anyone that says otherwise is lying and I challenge them to bring the proof. "I would never seek to physically harm a journalist. For the last 30 years I have defended and worked with journalists and fought for the right of freedom of expression. "I am also very close to many in that profession. I would be the last to seek to disparage those that are honorable and noble within its ranks." The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the International Press Centre (IPC) have slammed Fani-Kayode for the outburst. NUJ said Fani-Kayode’s reaction was “reprehensible, dishonourable and irritating” while the IPC said it was “repulsive”. https://thenationonlineng.net/fani-kayode-retracts-stupid-word-on-reporter/

The reconciliatory efforts of the Governor Mai Mala Buni led Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee (CENCPC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC) on Monday saw Minister of Transport, Rotimi Ameachi and his counterpart Minister of State, Petroleum, Timipre Sylva agreeing to work together to reposition the party in the South-South geo-political zone of the country. The two of them who were one time governors of Rivers and Bayesla States disclosed this development to newsmen after a closed door meeting with the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee at the party's National Secretariat in Abuja. With the 2023 presidential election about three years away, the campaign posters of the Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, seeking to contest for the plum position is already circulated on social media. The posters carrying his photograph and campaign on the platform of the All Progressive Congress was sponsored by the Chairman of Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State, Mr Femi Ayodele. A copy of the posters which was seen by our reporter on social media have become subject of political debates and innuendos on different platforms. The posters show Fayemi rainmented in an adorable sky blue Agbada with a blue striped Awolowo cap. The message on the posters with APC logo read, “Support His Excellency Dr. John Kayode Fayemi for President 2023. Confirming the posters, Mr Ayodele, said he did the posters to show his unalloyed and uncompromising loyalty to Governor Fayemi against insinuation that he was working against him. He said the governor is fit enough for the exalted office considering his array of outstanding credentials, administrative shrewdness and political acumen. He added that Fayemi's commitment, resourcefulness and pedigree puts him in good stead to lead Nigeria in the next political dispensation. But when asked about the development, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Fayemi, Yinka Oyebode said his principal did not know anything about the posters. Oyebode, who said the sponsor was only expressing a mere personal opinion, urged the public to discountenance the campaign posters. He added that his principal was focused on governance and how to uplift Ekiti in terms of infrastructural, economic and social development instead of issues around 2023 elections. The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Segun Dipe, had earlier on May 5 denied that Fayemi was nursing a presidential ambition towards 2023. The governor's aide said such claim was misrepresentation of Fayemi's conduct and personality. https://thenationonlineng.net/2023-fayemi-campaign-posters-flood-social-media/

Samuel Oamen The eye is a very important part of the body that must be given special attention and care. Here are things that may contribute to bad eyes sight: · Being under the sun with sunglasses Sunglasses won’t just make you look good. Exposing your bare eyes to the sun is actually one of the most common things that damage your eyesight and it can have pretty serious consequences. For absolute protection, always rock a wide-brimmed hat and shades while you’re in the sun. To be useful, you’ll want sunglasses that offer UV blocking, which is usually printed on a sticker attached to the lenses. 100% protection is standard these days, so don’t settle for a lower figure. They may cost a little more than glasses that only offer 50% protection, but UV rays are known to increase the risk of cataracts, damage the retina and increase your risk of getting skin cancer on your eyelids, so it’s well worth the extra cost. · Whitening drops If you regularly use eye drops, you probably think that you are keeping your eyes in great condition. Whitening drops, for example, often look just the same as medicine, and have the added benefit of making your eyes look white and healthy. No risk, right? Wrong. Drops that reduce the redness in your eyes do so by restricting blood vessels temporarily that’s why your eyes will appear redder than ever when the effect wears off, and the blood vessels dilate. Definitely don’t make using whitening drops a habit. · Swimming without Goggles! Hitting the pool? Grab some goggles to stop pool chemicals from going in your eyes. Likewise if you are doing anything that releases chemicals or could result in debris hitting you. Gardening can be harmful to the eyes because of the dirt that can be disturbed during weeding, mowing the lawn and planting. Dirt and dust molecules can cause irritation and may even scratch the cornea of the eye. Protective eyewear is a must. Also be really careful that nothing can hit you in the eyes, because that’s the leading cause of cornea abrasions. · Rubbing your eyes As tempting as it may be, it’s a big no-no. Rubbing them too hard can break the blood vessels under the eyelids. So to soothe irritated eyes, try a cold compress instead. · Not eating well balanced diets Yes — diet and nutrition matter. In fact, some fruits and vegetables are crucial for optimum eye health, especially ones with vitamins C and E, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids. The AAO suggests adding citrus fruits, vegetables oils, nuts, whole grains, leafy greens, and fish to your meals as much as possible. Even more important? Water. Staying hydrated is key for tear production and keeping eyes well-lubricated. Also, make sure to skip foods high in sodium, which can dehydrate your body. · Misusing eye makeup Anything you put near your eye is a potential risk. And yes, this includes your mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, and eye creams. So make sure to apply makeup far away from your lash line so you don’t block the oil glands of your lids — a build up here can cause infections. Also, throw away your eye makeup after three months. Bacteria loves to grow in dark, damp places, so your mascara could be a breeding ground to some nasty infections. · Not getting enough sleep Sleep deprivation can lead to a number of problems, including weight gain, depression, and decreased immune function. Moreover, a lack of sleep is also hurting your eyes (some symptoms include twitching, dry eyes, blurry vision, and pain). Be sure to get a minimum of seven hours a night and remember, put down that smartphone before bed. · Watching TV at night In fact, looking at any type of screen right before bed in the dark, including your cell phone, e-reader, television, and computer, is bad for you. The levels of light are changing rapidly, so your eyes have to work hard to process the changes, which can lead to eyestrain, pain, headaches, dry eye, and redness. · Smoking Not only is it trickier to see through clouds of smoke, cancer sticks have a blinding internal impact as well. Smoking ups your risk of losing your eyesight fourfold and even if you swerve complete vision loss, the chemicals you’re inhaling make you three times more likely to develop cataracts, according to a Harvard University study. https://thenationonlineng.net/nine-things-that-can-damage-your-eyes/

The battle of supremacy between Anambra Governor Willie Obiano and traditional rulers has heightened tension in the State. Obiano suspended 12 more traditional rulers for visiting President Muhammadu Buhari last week. He had suspended monarch of Ukwulu, Igwe Peter Uyanwa, over alleged petitions from his community. He also withdrew the monarch’s certificate of recognition. The one-year suspension clamped on the monarchs, according to a statement, was for embarking on a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari without consultation or approval from the Government. The suspension was announced through a circular titled “Suspension of Twelve (12) Traditional Rulers in Anambra State,” dated August 11, 2020 by Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr. Greg Obi. The affected monarchs are: Igwe Alex Edozieuno of Mkpunando; Igwe Mark Anthony Okonkwo of Alor; Igwe Chukuwma Bob Vincent Orji of Ezinifite; Igwe Engr G.B.C Mbakwe of Abacha; Igwe Chijioke Nwankwo of Nawfia and Igwe Nkeli Nelly of Igbariam. Others were: Igwe Anthony Onyekwere of Owelle; Igwe A. N Onwuneme of Ikenga; Igwe Simon Ikechukwu Chidubem of Umumbo; Igwe S. O Uche of Ezira; Igwe Dr Emeka Ilouno of Ifitedunu and Igwe Peter Ikegbunem Udoji of Eziagulu Otu. The suspension letter was copied to Obi of Onitsha, Alfred Achebe as chairman of the Council in Anambra; Commissioner of Police and the State Director, Directorate of security services DSS. Obiano warned they should stop parading themselves as traditional rulers and desist from discharging their functions in their communities. The circular also revoked their membership of Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council and cancelled any appointment they may be holding in government committees until the suspension is lifted. The government further said the suspension may be lifted at the end of one year, renewed or upgraded in the intervening period depending on government’s review of the conduct of the errant royal fathers. However, three of the 12 suspended traditional rulers described the government's action as unfortunate. The monarchs, who pleaded anonymity for security reasons, maintained Obiano was ill-advised on the matter. The told The Nation Obiano had no powers in any extant law to suspend for just trying to see President Muhammadu Buhari. According to them: "It's unfortunate and laughable that our dear Governor had to carry out this despotic action in a democratic dispensation. "Why should a Governor of a state punish his subjects, especially, traditional rulers, for trying to see their President? This is laughable "The government said we didn't get clearance from it before travelling outside the state. “Don't we have our fundamental rights of movement and association anymore? Are we in a state of emergency or war? "We pray Obiano will not attract some kind of wrath upon himself because of his desperation to perpetuate the infamous government of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the state. "Though we are traditional rulers in our communities, but we also have right to support any political party or candidate of our choices." The suspension of the monarchs, The Nation gathered, may not be unconnected with their support for an oil magnate in the state. https://thenationonlineng.net/obiano-suspends-12-monarchs-for-visiting-buhari/

The Police have arraigned the driver and owner of the vehicle that killed Nigeria's first female combat helicopter pilot, Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile, in a crash at the Nigerian Air Force Base, Kaduna. The duo was arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrate Court on four count charges of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and attention, driving without drivers licence and driving without authorisation of the owner, and one count charged of negligent conduct while causing danger to person and property. The suspects, Nehmiah Adejo and David Adejo, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, were however granted bail. The Chief Magistrate, Emmanuel Benjamin, after hearing arguments from counsels of defendants, Nehmiah Adejo, David Adejo, and Prosecutor, DSP Martins Leo, granted a bail of N1 million to Nehemiah and David. The Magistrate, who adjourned the case to 24 and 25 of August, ordered both defendants to produce two sureties each who must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and are engaged in legal businesses and present a Bank Verification Number that corresponds with their information. The prosecution counsel charged Nehemiah with a four- count charge of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and attention, driving without drivers licence and driving without authorisation of the owner. He however pleaded not guilty. Also David was charged with alleged negligent conduct while causing danger to person and property, an allegation he also denied. The prosecution counsel had prayed the court allowed Nehemiah to be remanded, arguing there is pending investigation of culpable homicide against him. However counsel to Nemiah, Aliyu Ibrahim Omachi, argued for a bail on the basis that he is a first time offender and has spent more than 4 weeks in detention. Flying Officer Tolulope Arotile was killed in a road accident at the NAF Base in Kaduna and three suspects were subsequently arrested. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) had in line with extant laws handed over the three suspects involved in the accident that led to the death of Flying Officer Arotile to the Nigeria Police, saying it is a civil case. Kaduna State Police Command's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Muhammad Jalige said the case of alleged culpable homicide and criminal conspiracy against the three occupants of the vehicle was still under investigation. He however said that the suspects would be charged to court in that direction as soon as investigation was concluded. https://thenationonlineng.net/driver-owner-of-vehicle-that-killed-flying-officer-arotile-arraigned/

Borno Governor Babagana Zulum has attributed Wednesday’s attack on his convoy between Monguno and Baga town to military sabotage. The Nation had reported the Governor’s convoy was attacked by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists during a tour of displaced communities along Monguno and Baga axis in the Lake Chad region. Zulum, in a viral video with the Commander in the area, pointed accusing finger at the Army, alleging attempt to sabotage the visit with the attack. The Governor was convinced the exchange of fires was between the Nigeria Army and the Police Special Anti- Robbery Squad (FSARS) leading his convoy into Baga town. Eyewitnesses said the Governor was whisked away from his official car and smuggled into the FSARS armoured personnel carrier vehicles during the attack. Reliving the incident to reporters in Monguno on Thursday, Zulum said: "As far as I am concerned what happened in Baga was a complete sabotage by the military. There is no Boko Haram in Baga. “I wonder because we have over 1,181 soldiers in Baga, 72 officers, 107 solders, 400 soldiers in Mile 4 and 1,900 soldiers in Monguno. I see no reason why only five Boko Haram will stop them from occupying Bags town. “The troops have been in Mile 4 for over one year, there is complete sabotage, the problem is not with President Buhari or General Buhari but the command and control structure. There is a need to look into command structure.” On why the visit became necessary, he said: “We have over 80,000 IDPs in Monguno, they cannot continue to depend on NGO and others for food. We have created opportunities for them to go back to their communities and continue with their business and farming activities. “After Sallah we are going to allow people to go back to Kukawa and we will give time to the military. “If they will not clear Baga, we will mobilise our hunters, CJTF and vigilantes to recapture Baga. We cannot continue like this. People have taken their destiny in their hands.” https://thenationonlineng.net/military-saboteurs-attacked-my-convoy-zulum-alleges/
