Crime › Lady, Boyfriend Nabbed For Stealing, Selling Children by SamuelOamen(op): 5:31pm On Apr 22, 2021 |
A 31-year-old lady, Titilayo Kudaisi and her boyfriend, Oluseyi Akinsete, have been arrested for stealing and selling children. They were arrested in Ondo State after stealing a six-month- old baby at Odo-Ota Sawmill area in Ilorin, Kwara State. Kudaisi said they stole the child after the parents left the house while the boyfriend stood guard. She confessed the two children they stole earlier were sold in Imo State for N500, 000 and N300, 000. Kudaisi admitted she also sold her baby shortly after she was introduced to the business by her boyfriend. "We went to steal the child from his parents' house in Ilorin, Kwara State. "It's my boyfriend who's aware of the movement of the boy's mother. After surveying the environment, we now moved in to steal the toddler. "I met my boyfriend who lured me into the business in Lagos where I was living. He invited me to Ilorin, and I went to meet him with my only child who is three-years-old. Though, the father of my child is late. "After arriving Ilorin, he convinced me that we should sell my baby, a boy which I disagreed with. But after much persuasion, I agree that we should sell the baby after he told me that he will help get my baby back. "We later sold my child to someone in Imo State for N300, 000 but I could not get my child back despite his assurance. "It's after we sold my child that we went to steal the baby at Ilorin. After stealing the baby, we travelled down to Ondo town in Ondo State and I advised him that we should return the baby because I was scared of the entire scenario." But the boyfriend said he started the child selling business in 2019 through his friend he identified as John Emeka. Oluseyi, who claimed to have fathered three children, said he has not sold any of his children. He said his friend helped him to sell a female child for N500,000 "In total, I've been able to steal three babies since I started the business. We used to sell them to our buyers in Imo State. "The guy that used to buy the babies from us told us that he works with an orphanage home." Ondo Police Commissioner, Bolaji Salami, said the suspects would soon be charged to court. https://thenationonlineng.net/lady-boyfriend-nabbed-for-stealing-selling-children/

Health › Eight Side Effects Of Not Getting Enough Sleep by SamuelOamen(op): 3:03pm On Mar 16, 2021 |
By Samuel Oamen Sleeping adequately often helps maintain a healthy body balance. Not getting enough sleep can lower your sex drive, weaken your immune system, cause thinking issues and lead to weight gain. When you don’t get enough sleep, you may also increase your risk of certain cancers, diabetes, and even car accidents. Here are the side effects of not sleeping adequately: · Prone to sickness Losing sleep can impair your body’s ability to fight off illness. This makes it easier to get sick. Researchers uncovered a reciprocal relationship between sleep and your immune system. You may lose additional sleep while your body fights off a bug if you get sick and haven’t had enough shut-eye. · Cancer risk increases Shortened sleep is associated with higher rates of breast cancer, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer, according to the AASM’s sleep statement. Overnight shift workers may take the brunt of this burden. The good news is that men and women who slept seven or more hours per night had the best mortality rates in the group. · Causes serious health problems Sleep disorders and chronic sleep loss can put you at risk for: Heart disease Heart attack Heart failure Irregular heartbeat High blood pressure Stroke Diabetes · Kills sex drive Sleep specialists say sleep-deprived men and women report lower libidos and less interest in sex. Depleted energy, sleepiness, and increased tension may be largely to blame. · Ages your skin Most people have experienced sallow skin and puffy eyes after a few nights of missed sleep. But it turns out that chronic sleep loss can lead to lackluster skin, fine lines, and dark circles under the eyes. When you don’t get enough sleep, your body releases more of the stress hormone cortisol. In excess amounts, cortisol can break down skin collagen, the protein that keeps skin smooth and elastic. · Makes you forgetful Trying to keep your memory sharp? Try to get plenty of sleep. In 2009, American and French researchers determined that brain events called “sharp wave ripples” are responsible for consolidating memory. The ripples also transfer learned information from the hippocampus to the neocortex of the brain, where long-term memories are stored. Sharp wave ripples occur mostly during the deepest levels of sleep. · Sleeplessness is depressing Over time, lack of sleep and sleep disorders can contribute to the symptoms of depression. In a 2005 Sleep in America poll, people who were diagnosed with depression or anxiety were more likely to sleep less than six hours at night. · Sleeplessness causes accidents Studies show that sleep loss and poor-quality sleep also lead to accidents and injuries on the job. In one study, workers who complained about excessive daytime sleepiness had significantly more work accidents, particularly repeated work accidents. They also had more sick days per accident. https://thenationonlineng.net/eight-side-effects-of-not-getting-enough-sleep/

Politics › Water Scarcity In Enugu: Long Queues Sighted In Most Parts Of The State (Photos) by SamuelOamen(op): 2:33pm On Mar 04, 2021 |
Residents of Enugu, the Enugu State capital, are facing acute water scarcity.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who monitored the situation in Enugu on Thursday, reported that the worst hit were residents of Independence Layout, Community Layout in Transekulu, Achara Layout and Emene.
Some of the residents told NAN that they had not had water since the New Year, adding that they had been at the mercy of water vendors.
Pat Chukwuma, who lives at Independence Layout, told NAN she has been buying water from vendors since she moved into the layout nine years ago.
“Ever since I moved into this area, we only had tap water twice in 2014 but from then till now, I buy water from vendors at a very costly amount, between N18,000 and N20,000.
“Again, we cannot do borehole due to the topography of Enugu which is covered by coal,” she said.
Eucharia Ukwu, who lives at the Community Layout, Transekulu, said they were not even reticulated since the area was created, adding that she relied on well water and water from vendors.
“In fact, the situation is worrisome and we are appealing to the state government to address the problem urgently,” she said.
The situation is similar in Emene and Achara layout, as residents also buy water in gallons from wells and vendors.
Chima Agu, a restaurant operator in Emene, and Jonas Okereke, in Achara layout, said they bought 25-litre gallon of water at N70 as against between N30 and N50 they purchased in January.
Mr Agu attributed the situation to the dry season as many wells had dried up due to the harmattan.
Meanwhile, Dubem Onyia, the special adviser to the Enugu State governor on Water Resources, said the government was confronting the water challenges in the state.
Mr Onyia disclosed this in Enugu on Thursday in a statement.
He assured the residents that the issue of inadequate water supply, one of the key challenges Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi administration inherited, would soon be history.
The governor’s aide said the present administration was doing a lot with the “lean” resources at its disposal to address the issue of water in Enugu metropolis.
He noted that some areas in Enugu metropolis, such as Iva Valley, GRA, New Haven, Ogui, Asata, Uwani, some parts of Achara Layout, Abakpa Nike, Trans Ekulu, and Thinkers Corner, enjoyed potable water supply.
Mr Onyia assured residents in other areas that they would soon enjoy adequate potable water supply.
He disclosed that the state government had commenced comprehensive rehabilitation of the 9th Mile Crash Programme, with solar powered boreholes.
The governor’s aide said the upgrade of the 9th mile Crash Programme would ensure adequate supply of potable water from Oji River, Ajali and Iva Water schemes.
Mr Onyia revealed that a N600 million contract was recently awarded to FordMarx Nigeria Limited for the rehabilitation of the 9th Mile Crash Programme.
The company had mobilised to site, he said.
Mr Onyia said the water project, which will be solar-powered to address the peculiar challenges of power failure, would boost the volume of water being reticulated from the water schemes to Enugu metropolis.
The state government had commenced the bid opening and evaluation meeting for new Okwojo Ngwo boreholes augmentation to Enugu metropolis, according to the governor’s aide.
He said the state government had committed funds to the actualisation of the Federal Government Adada Dam Water Project in Nsukka.

Politics › 2023: Tension As PDP NWC Considers Sack Of Secondus by SamuelOamen(op): 11:13am On Feb 17, 2021 |
By Sunday Oguntola Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are plotting the removal of National Chairman Uche Secondus owing to lack of confidence in his ability to lead the party to victory in 2023, The Nation has learnt.
The plot gathered steam on Tuesday during a meeting of the PDP NWC. Sources at the meeting said many of the NWC members, during the tension-soaked meeting pushed for removal of Secondus, who has been having a running battle to remain in office.
A very reliable source at the meeting disclosed that the NWC members were unhappy with Secondus’ handling of issues in the party, which they said has not made the party play its role as a viable alternative or opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
It was gathered NWC members amongst other issues accused Secondus of not providing effective leadership to enable the party take advantage of what they consider as the poor leadership style of the APC to convince Nigerians to do away with the ruling party in 2023.
“Many of the NWC members are unhappy with him (Secondus). He has not lived up to expectations. And we’re afraid that our great party would not make the expected impact in 2023 if we retain Secondus as national chairman”, the source who did not want to be named told The Nation.
He stated that issues of financial impropriety and mismanagement were also raised against the chairman, whom he claimed had a hard time defending himself.
“There were also allegations of financial mismanagement brought against him. And we needed explanations, which we are yet to receive. There was so much tension, and it was clear many stakeholders in the party wanted Secondus out.
“He has been unable to manage the simmering crisis in the party, some chapters in the north are barely hanging on by a thread. Even in the south west, some prominent members are at war with each other, and the only reason the party has not imploded there is because of their strong faith in the party.
"Secondus has also failed to manage the situation. We think he just has to leave so we can reposition the party for 2023,” the highly placed source revealed. He further revealed that a number of the party’s national executives also offered to resign from their positions so as not to be dragged down with the embattled national chairman.
Secondus may have incurred the wrath of the NWC members when he unilaterally lifted a suspension placed on some lawmakers at the House of Representatives under the party’s platform who had been sanctioned for the role they played in the emergence of Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker of the lower chamber as well as other minority officials.
The opposition PDP had nominated Kingsley Chinda for the position of minority leader and Chukwuka Onyema as Deputy Minority Leader. Yakubu Barde was nominated as Minority Whip and Muraina Ajibola as Deputy Minority Whip by the PDP.
But in what was viewed as a betrayal, some members of the PDP backed Speaker Gbajabiamila to reject the PDP nominees and instead endorsed the emergence of Ndudi Elumelu and Toby Okechukwu as Minority and Deputy Minority leaders respectively. Gideon Gwani was picked as Minority Whip and Adesegun Adekoya as Deputy Minority Whip.
The action made the PDP slam suspension on Elumelu, Wole Oke, Lynda Ikpeazu, Anayo Edwin, Gideon Gwadi, Toby Okechukwu and Adekoya Abdul-Majid, a move that was reversed by Secondus without the approval of the NWC.
Secondus’ situation is said to be more precarious as he is not in the good books of the Rivers Governor, Nyesome Wike who is regarded as a kingmaker in the party.
The NWC Tuesday meeting, which was reportedly extended due to the heated debates around the removal of Secondus, came to an inconclusive end with the officials trying to calm tempers, as stakeholders kept insisting that Secondus must go, a situation that was said to have split the NWC. https://thenationonlineng.net/2023-tension-as-pdp-nwc-considers-sack-of-secondus/
