The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Thursday, ordered the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki; Senators Dino Melaye and Ben Murray-Bruce to immediately honour the invitation for questioning over their roles in the October 5, 2018 street procession staged in Abuja by the Peoples Democratic Party.

The three senators were part of the PDP leaders who led the protest which held some days after last year’s governorship election in Osun State was declared to have been won by the All Progressives Congress.


Alleging that the security agencies, including the Police, colluded with the APC to rig the earlier governorship election in Ekiti State and the one later held in Osun, the senators had led a protest to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s office in Abuja, demanding a free and fair election in 2019; and were on their way to the Force Headquarters when policemen dispersed them with teargas.


Delivering judgment on Thursday, Justice Okon Abang dismissed the fundamental human rights enforcement suit filed by Saraki, Melaye and Murray-Bruce who had been invited by the Police to answer questions in relation to the protest.

The senators had sought the court’s order nullifying the October 6 and 8, 2018 letters of invitation by the Police.

They had also, in their suit filed on October 8, 2018, claimed that the Police invitation amounted to harassment, intimidation and an attempt by the Police to detain them unlawfully.


They prayed for, among others in the suit, the court’s declaration that the act of the Police dispersing their procession using tear gas was a violation of their various rights, and sought an order awarding them N500m as “exemplary and pecuniary damages.”

Justice Abang, in his judgment on Thursday, upheld the case made out by the Police by dismissing the applicants’ suit for lacking in merit and awarding the cost of N50,000 against the three applicants.


He held that a mere invitation by the Police, which are empowered by Section 4 of the Police Act to detect and investigate crimes, could never amount to harassment or intimidation.

Abang further held that the Police, having alleged in their response to the suit that the PDP procession was dispersed following the protesters’ riotous and criminal conduct, the law enforcement agency had the power to invite suspects for questioning.


He ruled that the Police invitation extended to them remained valid and subsisting, adding that it was the outcome of their honouring the invitation that would determine if their rights had been violated.

El-Rufai’s convoy foils kidnapping along Kaduna-Abuja road

The Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai’s convoy foiled attempted kidnapping of motorists along Kaduna-Abuja road on Wednesday afternoon.

The Governor who was on his way to Abuja got to the Akilubu village around 3:40pm, sighted dozens of vehicles parked by citizens alarmed that kidnappers were ahead.

Security operatives in the governor’s convoy advanced and cleared the road of the criminals who fled into the forest.

After clearing the road, Governor El-Rufai directed that travelers who had been wounded by the criminals be rushed to the nearest hospital. The Governor also directed security agencies to intensify patrols and permanently clear the road of the bandits.

When nomadic Fulani youths are educated, Zamfara will have lasting peace —Miyetti Allah

The Zamfara Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Ibrahim Suleman, has said that for the state to have lasting peace, children of nomadic Fulani must be educated.

He urged the state government to encourage Fulani children to go to school, saying education is the permanent solution to the rising waves of insecurity in the state.


Suleman, who made the call at a stakeholder’s meeting held in Gusau on Wednesday, said most of the Fulani children indulging in criminal activities such as banditry, do so due to ignorance and poor parenting.

He stressed the need for parents and government to collaborate by ensuring that nomadic children acquire sound education that can make them to compete favorably with other children in the state.


“It is only when nomadic children are educated that lasting peace can be achieved in the state,” Suleman emphasised.

A Fulani leader in Tsafe Local Government Area of the state, Ardo Babuga, pointed out that engaging bandits in dialogues was a very difficult task.

Babuga said the Fulani community had suffered most from the activities of bandits, saying thousands of their cattle had been rustled, with many cattle rearers displaced and their women and children kidnapped.


“We are not safe from these bandits. I am living as a refugee in Tsafe as a result of incessant bandits’ attacks,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the meeting involved key stakeholders, including the Police and other security agencies, traditional and religious leaders.

It was aimed at finding solutions to the incessant banditry and kidnappings in the state which had led to loss of lives and displacement of thousands of residents

S’West forum wants Senate presidency zoned to S’South

A pan -Yoruba Group, South-West Consultative Forum, has congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari and Prof.Yemi Osinbajo on their victory at the just-concluded 2019 presidential election.

It also urged the All Progressives Congress to zone the Senate presidency to the South- South geopolitical zone.

The forum also hailed the National Leader of the APC and Co-Chair of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Bola Tinubu, for his efforts at ensuring that the party emerged victorious in the presidential election.


SWCF in a statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Osinowo Ibrahim, said, “We are proud of Tinubu’s efforts at bringing the Yoruba to the centrepiece of Nigerian politics. The February 23, 2019 presidential election has proved to the entire nation that Tinubu is the political leader of the South-West.”
