The new director-general of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said she may not have won her election if she did not enjoy the tremendous support of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, who is on a working visit to Nigeria, said this at a meeting with Mr Buhari in Abuja on Monday.

Details of the meeting were contained in a statement by presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina.

“You nominated me, you wrote hundreds of letters, called up hundreds of world leaders. Without your personal and direct intervention, it may not have worked,” Mrs Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s former finance minister, was quoted to have said.

President Muhammadu Buhari Monday hosted in audience Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, newly appointed Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), telling her that despite the robust support Nigeria gave to her candidacy for the position, “You also earned it. We are happy you made it, but you earned it with your record of performance both at home and abroad.”

The President said Mrs Okonjo-Iweala was putting Nigeria more on the world map, “and I congratulate you, as well as the country. I know you will represent us so well.”

President Buhari lauded Nigerian women once again, pointing to key positions they hold like Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, and many others. He said the same way, government would encourage the youths, “so that they can be ready for the challenges of the future.”

Rochas Okorocha, former governor of Imo, says he doesn’t want the “unusual situation” between him and Hope Uzodimma, his successor, to generate tension in the state.

The feud between Okorocha and Uzodimma was rekindled in February, when the former governor was arrested for unsealing a property seized by the state government.

Speaking after a meeting with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday, Okorocha told journalists that he would not want an escalation of the conflict arising from the sealing of some of his properties.

“The question is ‘what wrong has Rochas done?’ Have I done any wrong bringing APC to the south-east? And when I built APC, none of these people were there. They were all in PDP,” he said.

“Was it wrong that I encouraged my family to invest in their state, rather than investing abroad? I asked nothing of the government. I simply wanted to live my free life. But it is for he that accuses to prove.

“What preoccupies my mind is to make sure that we don’t create tension in the state, because already this country has a lot of insecurity. And police that ought to be busy doing something else should not be busy going to guide the sealing of a property with a white paper stronger than court judgment.

“Can a governor use a white paper to execute a judgment? Can you be a judge in your own case? These are the questions begging for answers, and why the use of thugs to attack your immediate predecessor and a senator of the federal republic?

“What are you trying to achieve? Now that you have arrested him, or forced him to police station with thugs, what have you achieved? What is the case against him? Nothing.

“That is why I described it as a very unusual situation. I think it is a script that is playing out, and this script has been for too long.”

He condemned the sealing of some of his properties in Imo, adding that he didn’t understand why he was being “attacked”.

“I am still waiting to understand the reason why all the attack because before, the allegation was that the money used in building was government money,” Okorocha said.

“Now it has changed; it is no longer the issue of government money, but that it is built on the green verge and allocation where government house was supposed to be built. I am still waiting and only time will tell.

“But let it be known that I was Rochas Okorocha before governor, and I am still Rochas Okorocha after governor. Government House never made me. I was who I was before becoming governor. Rather, I would say that becoming governor was a sacrifice on my own part.

“But talking about the properties in question — the schools, the East High College, Rochas Foundation College, the Royal Spring Palm Hotel and the university — these outfits are all charitable outfits for the Rochas Foundation. And I brought them back home as a sign of investment to encourage investment in my own state, where I come from.

“So, the allegation that it is built on the green verge or built where Government House was supposed to be built is neither here nor there. It is rather trying to make excuses to carry out an already planned attack

A septuagenarian arrested by members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) is not the “wanted Wakili”, according to Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode.

Some members of the OPC in Oyo State had, on Sunday, razed a Fulani settlement at Kajola in Ibarapa area of Oyo State before arresting the elderly blind man.

In the process, Daily Trust gathered Wakili’s daughter-n-law was killed.

In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Fani-Kayode said the old man arrested is not the prime suspect.

His tweet read, “One Isikilu Wakili, a foreign terrorist who operates in the Ibarapa area, is the most notorious, dangerous and bloodthirsty terrorist in the South-West today. He killed even more people yesterday. He is even worse than Abu and the old man that is in police custody in Ibadan.

“The Isikilu Wakili that is still at large is the leading mafia don and he is a brutal and cold-blooded rapist and killer. He has brought torment and carnage to the people of the South-West. I call on my friend and brother, Sunday Igboho to support & and assist the Nigeria Police Force and intelligence agencies to find him, fish him out and bring him to justice.

“This must be done within the law and it must be done with power and precision. Now is the time to free the people of Ibarapa and the SW of his wickedness and barbarity. Now is the time to do what ought to have been done long ago. I trust our security forces to do the right thing. The old man that they have in custody is not the real Mcoy. Isikilu is the real Mcoy and he is still out there killing our people. Only our security forces with the total support and commitment of Sunday Igboho, the local community and the gallant and fearless sons and daughters of Oduduwa can save the day. And save the day they must!” he said.

The Director of Press and Public Relations in the ministry, Ben Goong, stated these in an interview with our correspondent.

Boko Haram terrorists had in the past abducted pupils, women and girls from the three states, including Chibok in Borno State and Dapchi in Yobe State. Also, criminals had in recent times kidnapped pupils from some North-Western states.

When asked what the Federal Government was doing about schools located in high-risk areas in the north, Goong said, “As we speak, there are quite a number of students from Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States being relocated to other schools across the country, including the Federal Capital Territory.”

He cited the example of some students from Borno State who he said had been relocated to the Federal Government College, Kwali, Abuja.

He said students were being moved to safer schools and were being catered for with full boarding facilities.

He added that the Federal Government would be carrying out some enlightenment campaigns especially among the military to discourage the use of school facilities for military-related activities.

This, he said, was necessary so that such schools are not attacked.

When asked why the Federal Government stopped the implementation of the Safe Schools Initiative, Goong said it had not stopped, adding that it was being strengthened.

The Oodua Peoples Congress, on Sunday, said the men of Nigeria Police Force in the Oyo State detained three OPC operatives for arresting notorious Fulani warlord Iskilu Wakili, who has been accused of sundry crimes in the Ayete area of Ibarapaland in the state.

The PUNCH had reported that farmers and residents of Ayete lived in perpetual fear of Wakili who was accused of displacing them from their farms.

It was gathered that Wakili, who is said to be the leader of the herdsmen in Ayete worked with dozens of herders who are his disciples. Together with his battalion, they allegedly seized hectares of farmlands at Ayete, raped the women in the rustic town, and kidnapped their rich men for ransom.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH on Sunday, Adedeji Oluwole, the OPC sector coordinator who led his operatives and other vigilante groups to arrest Wakili, said the suspect was nabbed on Sunday morning.

Oluwole, the Federal Capital Territory OPC coordinator, who is also an indigene of Igboora, said he relocated four months ago to Ayete to bring Wakili to book after security agencies failed to arrest him.

The OPC leader said it took over four days of continued operations and surveillance to nab Wakili and three of his accomplices.

According to Oluwole, more than 10 OPC operatives went on the mission. He said Wakili’s men shot fiercely at the OPC operatives before they were eventually nabbed.

He, however, expressed shock that the police detained three of his men after they handed over Wakili.

“We took Wakili and the three others from Igangan to Igboora and handed them over to the DPO at Igboora. The name of the DPO is Ajayi Mark. As I am talking to you, they have taken them to Iyaganku at the State CID in Ibadan with three of my boys,” Oluwole told The PUNCH on Sunday afternoon.

Continuing, he said, “When we took Wakili to the police this morning, the police said we should take Wakili to the hospital first which we refused because we are not in a position to do that. We told the police that they have been complaining all these days that they wanted to arrest Wakili and now we have brought Wakili to their doorstep, they should take over.

“Nobody touched Wakili, nobody hurt him, there are no traces of any hurt on him. He is an old man and we had promised the whole world that we won’t hurt them but we would arrest them for the whole world to see who is Wakili because all these while, he has been a faceless person, nobody knows him. We didn’t beat him or harm him. When we nabbed him, we put him inside a vehicle and handed him over to the police.

"The DPO then said he got a signal from the CP (Commissioner of Police) in Iyaganku. They have taken three of my men to Iyaganku now.”

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, Olugbenga Fadeyi, did not respond to calls put to his line. A text message sent to his phone was also not replied to as of the time of filing this report.

EFCC arrests ex-power minister, Mohammed Wakil, over ‘dubious payments’ at defunct PHCN

The operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested a former minister of state for power, Mohammed Wakil, at his residence in Abuja.

An EFCC source told PRNigeria that the former Minister was arrested over some dubious payments involving the defunct Power Holding Company Limited, PHCN.

According to the source, Mr Wakili will be arraigned at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on Monday.

Recall that the anti-graft agency had in 2018 arraigned Mr Wakil and four others at the Federal High Court, Maiduguri, Borno State for another case of an alleged collection of $115 million from a former minister of petroleum resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, to influence the outcome of the 2015 presidential election.

Born on February 6, 1965, in Damboa Local Government of Borno State and a law graduate from the University of Maiduguri, Mohammed Wakil was the Minister of State for Power in Nigeria during Jonathan’s administration.

He was also a member of the National Assembly, vice chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (North East), and lawyer.

During the Obasanjo/Atiku first democratic term (Nigeria’s Fourth Republic) from 1999 to 2003, Mr Wakil was the majority leader in the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
