jalether: While I agree that modern football has been watered down, there is nothing remarkable or impressive about hard crunching/carrier threatening tackles of the
60's, 70's and 80's neither. there is a reason why it's called footie and not "zootie" . skills, excitement, passion and unity is the essence of footie and not the
animalisitic approach of players such as Graeme souness, Romeo Benetti, roy keane et al. I disagree. . . . . Players didn't moan to the referee then when they were kicked and there were less career-threatening injuries back in the days. It seems humans have gone softer. . . . . .Players don't dive back in the days. A tackle is a tackle - get up and get on with it. It's a CONTACT sports. |

silentc: Sauron, while your comments are valid, I dont think they address the initial question asked on this post. The post is aimed at your experience of injustice abroad. I am sure one of us can start another post of injustice in Nigeria or better still black on black injustice.
This topic isnt about comparing injustice abroad and Nigeria. Again, valid comments, but wrong debate. Fair enough. . . . In that case, i am leaving the floor for those that have been beaten/tortured by cops abroad. dayokanu: Try buying something from Dugbe market in Ibadan and speak English. You would end up paying double after the market women curse your lineage. Very annoying attitude. On top of taking advantage of the stranger, they will curse his lineage back to the stone age. Only Oyinbos discriminate, We Nigerians are saints. I wonder why a person who grew up in all these injustice in Nigeria now complain that a white man looked at him somehow. Especially someone who's been maltreated by MOPOL or Officers at em illegal checkpoints in Lagos OR during campus RIOTS. Someone who has been tormented by daredevil robbers in Nigeria. Someone who cannot get through to his mobile network's customer service during the day and must wait 60 mins in the middle of the night to do so. Can you tell me how Nigerians view Beninoise and Togolese who come here for greener pastures? Or even hausa men who come to the South to work Benionoise and Togolese are far-fetched. I was in Nigeria when the Yorubas and the Hausas clashed in Ketu market several years ago. It was a blood-bath. Did Nigeria not ask the people from Ghana to leave? Did they cry INJUSTICE? All those lesson teachers left without their wages. |

I think the last of those vicious goalies was Jens Lehmann
Do you think CR7 would have played football if he were to be born in those times.
Watch out for players like Klaus Augenthaler, Ulli Steilker, Matthias Sammer. yeparipa. Playmakers of those days dey suffer.
You don forget Taribo West of Inter Milans tackle on Andre Kanchelskis of Fiorentina
In those days, How can you contest a header without your elbows? How can you contest a corner kick within 5 meters of the goalie? How can you dribble more than 2 people at a time? How can the fans be applauding you for dribbling me? He would PLAY but he wouldn't have moaned like a baby constantly. George Best managed it and he was kicked from pillar to post but he never stopped ridiculing his opponents. |

Those were when men played football not these days when minor leg-overs are things people cheer in stadium, when Arsenals pass pass were hailed something Rinus Michel perfected over 30yrs ago, Not when CR7 dives when tackled by the blades of grass on the field.
In those days for you to get a foulin your favour, you must show evidence of blood or concussion.
Remember the Bright Omokaro tackle of Maroc 88. Those were football. Vidic thats tagged hard nowadays would cry off the field Seriously, how did Schumacer get away with that horrendous tackle. medjai: The likes of Obasi, Nsofor, Odemwingie, Utaka, will play from the flanks. Kanu will most likely play as an attacking midfielder or supporting striker. Only Martins and Yakubu will play as strikers. You cant really blame Lagerback, there's a dearth of creative players in the midfield hence, the conversion of strikers to midfielders. He's working with what is available. The last time i checked, Nigeria have a professional league!!! So, what do u expect? He is doing his best as far as am concerned. The problem is our NFF who are inept and have no brains. If this is TRUE then the NFF should carry the blame. They have always been useless. If i remember correctly, didn't Amodu go to Angola with the same number of forward players? The midfield is the most important part in a team. They do the transition from the defence to the attack. . . . |

Olaolufred: Nothing is wrong with 7 Strikers. Some of them can still play well in Midfield. However, Capello may choose to go with one striker based on his own strategy. Someone else could choose more based on another strategy. Your strategy will be more influenced by the resources available. Mind you that our players differs to theirs. Let us support instead of being critical. By all logic, a team should have more midfielders than strikers. Of course, Nigeria as a country do things that defy logic. Who goes into a tournament with 7 strikers? How many of those can you play at a time? U will just have a bench filled with strikers who will not get a chance at playing. We are going to the world cup, people. . . A competition where if you don't concede goals, you cannot LOSE. medjai: How is it 7 strikers in the Super eagles. The only out and out strikers in that team are Yakubu and Martins. Kanu plays more as a midfielder. Osaze, Obasi, Nsofor, Utaka, though they can play as strikers, their primary role is not basically striking. If their primary role is not striking, i see no reason why they should make it. Go back to the days of Westerhof and Bonfrere Jo. . . . .None of em took 7 strikers to a football tournament. Something is wrong with the set-up. 7 strikers is way too much and it sounds desperate. Besides, the best form of defence is attack. That we are under dogs doesnt mean we should play a defensive and unattractive style of football. If we sit back and play a defensive style of play against the Argies, we'll definitely get hurt. If we commit too many players to attack, we will get HURT as well. U claimed Kanu, Osaze, Nsofor and Utaka are not strikers, how defensive are these players when Nigeria is leading and we need to see a game off? By the time we lose the first two games, y'all will come back here to start criticizing when you should have pointed it out in the first place. I am not a fan of hindsight analysis. Nigeria will be exposed with 4-3-3. We are not equipped enough to function with it. Also, one of the reasons Amodu was axed was because of the defensive and cautious style of play he adopted. He was getting the results but in an ugly way. There's a plethora of defensive minded midfielders in the Eagles. Isnt it right to balance it with a number of attackers? 5 strikers should have been enough. . . . . No formation requires you to have more than 2-3 strikers in a team. Why do you then need 7? SEVEN?? Our coaching crew are CLUELESS. |

Joe Cole has so much more to offer than a zombie like Adam Johnson. Joey is more experienced, he's been there done that and can produce a moment of magic(Naniesque) . . .Did you see England's game against Japan? a player who won the gk of the season in the biggest league in the world, the epl, surely cannot be intimidated at the national level Winning the GK of the season in the biggest league means squat. He still conceded 47 goals. Joe Hart has not featured yet in any European competition. Where is the experience? Do you know his state of mind when he travels? how old was Cassillas when he graced the stage for spain at the 02 wc. Casillas was Real Madrid's goalie back then. He featured in the UCL. He faced world class strikers and he conquered em.
