PoliticsWe've Won War Against Boko Haram - Army by sayyid(op): 8:45pm On Jan 10, 2016
THE Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, has said that the war against Boko Haram in the North-East has been won and urged his men to sustain the victory.
Buratai promised that the Nigerian Army would remain vigilant and ready to contend with new strategies that might be adopted by the terrorist group.
The army chief made this remark on Saturday while laying the foundation stone for the new Brigade headquarters complex at the 2 Brigade in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
Describing the current military operations in the North-East as critical, Buratai commended the soldiers for their commitment towards the onslaught against terrorists.
He said, “The North-East operation is critical at this stage. The terrorists have been defeated. These criminals may rear their ugly heads through other means. We will continue to maintain vigilance.
Buratai explained that the Federal Government would not relent in giving special attention to the welfare of military personnel.
Expressing satisfaction in the commitment to duty the 2 Brigade personnel, he pointed out that the Nigerian army had always been celebrated globally for its high level of professionalism and discipline.
The army chief urged soldiers to continue to maintain the high level of discipline they were known for, even as he commended the brigade for its effort in fighting oil theft in the Niger Delta region.
Promising that government will give attention to the medical needs of military personnel, Buratai added that the Nigerian Army would not fail to tackle the problem of accommodation in all the barracks across the country.
Apart from inspecting an ongoing five-bedroom block project embarked upon by his office, Buratai also spoke with wives of soldiers in the barracks and pledged Federal Government’s commitment towards improving their welfare.

PoliticsJim Nwobodo Dumps PDP For APC by sayyid(op): 9:48pm On Jan 08, 2016
A former minister of information, and governor of the old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo, on Friday defected to the All Progressive Congress.
Nwobodo, a former Senator and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, attended an APC meeting, reportedly convened by Foreign Affairs minister, Dr. Jeffrey Onyeama, in Enugu.
He declared his membership of the party at the meeting, to the surprise of most of the APC members present at the event.
A former PDP senator from Enugu State, Chief Fidelis Okoro, also defected to the APC at the meeting.
Okoro was in the Senate between 1999 and 2007.
There were indications that the former PDP bigwigs’ defection did not go down well with the some APC members, who openly voiced their dissatisfaction with the development at the meeting.
The party faithful could not hide their surprise, and shock, when Nwobodo arrived at the venue of the meeting in company with Okoro.
Some APC members, who apparently understood the duo’s mission at the meeting, voiced their disapproval.
Chairman of the party in Enugu State, Dr. Ben Nwoye, who appeared to have prior knowledge of the defection, got the aggrieved party members to calm down before Nwobodo made his declaration speech.
In his declaration speech, Nwobodo had harsh words for his old party, PDP.
Nwobodo condemned the PDP, and blamed the party’s leadership for allowing five governors to leave for the APC in the build up to the 2015 general elections.
According to him, he is joining the APC to move the people of Enugu State into the mainstream at the federal level.
Drawing from his experience as a governor, he said it was not good being in the opposition.
He said members of the APC in Enugu State should not to be discouraged by the electoral losses they suffered in the state in the past.
“You must always lose, what matters is the ability to rise again.
“I must condemn our former party, PDP – I know we had problems.
“I told our former chairman, how come did we allow five governors to leave the party?
“I am not looking for a job, I am talking because I want peace.
“I want our people to be part of the Federal Government at the centre.
“I had a problem being an opposition governor.
“I am not coming into APC because I want anything.
“I want our people to be reintegrated and have our own share of the Federal Government resources,” Nwobodo said.
Nwobodo recalled that while he was in PDP, his wife had always been an active member of the APC.
He pointed out that the slogan “change” did not start now with the APC.
According to him, it started in 1983, when he was an opposition governor.

PoliticsAPC Spent More Than PDP During Elections - Fani-kayode by sayyid(op): 4:31pm On Jan 07, 2016
A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, says the All Progressives Congress spent more than the Peoples Democratic Party which was in power during the last general elections.
Fani-Kayode, who was the spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, said this in a statement on Wednesday while reacting to the probe of some key officials of the PDP by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
He said, “No election campaign anywhere in the world, including that of President Buhari was run with just words, goodwill, grass and pebbles and neither were we given free campaign adverts or airtime. All these things were run and paid for with large sums of money.
“This is especially so with publicity and media because that was the lifeblood of the various campaigns. I repeat, there is nothing that we did in the campaign organisation or that my directorate did that Lai Mohammed, Buhari and the APC did not do in theirs. As a matter of fact, they spent far more than we did but I have no idea where they got their money and whether they were private or public funds.”
The ex-minister, therefore, denied reports that he collected N1.7bn from the embattled former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.
He said he neither collected money from former President Goodluck Jonathan nor Dasuki when he was the spokesperson for the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation.
Fani-Kayode said while he was the spokesperson for the campaign organisation, he only received money from donors and other private individuals.
He said, “I read with amusement the allegation that was made in the media report that I was given 1.7bn cash by President Goodluck Jonathan. This is false. A few hours later, they changed their story and said that I received 1.7bn from the office of the former NSA, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (retd.). This is also false.
“I have never received one kobo from former President Jonathan, Colonel Dasuki or any other member of Jonathan’s government. I never received any public funds. I was not the beneficiary of any payments in cash transfer, cheque or otherwise from any government official during the tenure of President Jonathan.
“As the Director of Media and Publicity of the Jonathan/Sambo Campaign Organisation, I received funds from private individuals and companies on behalf of the Directorate of Media and Publicity which I headed during the election campaigns but these were not public funds but rather private contributions specifically for the presidential and other campaigns.”
He said the money he received during the campaigns were transferred into his bank account by the Director of Finance of the Presidential Campaign Organisation and the account was specifically set up for the purpose of running the publicity and media aspects of the campaign for the whole country and the directorate.
Meanwhile, a former spokesperson for ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe, has asked the Federal Government not to dabble in the finances the Peoples Democratic Party spent in the last general elections.
Okupe, who condemned the detention of the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, maintained that the way the PDP sourced and utilised its campaign funds was not different from the way the All Progressives Congress sourced its own.
Speaking in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Wednesday, Okupe said President Muhammadu Buhari was losing his respect and integrity in the eyes of the international community by not upholding the rule of law.
He said, “The Federal Government should not try to dabble into or control the finances of the PDP. The way and manner the ruling party is undertaking its selective probe by hounding opposition leaders is unbecoming and very disheartening. Party finances are not the business of the government. The former National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, cannot deny that he didn’t collect money for campaigns during the last elections.
“Why is the Federal Government not asking questions on the sources of the APC’s campaign funds? The way the PDP spent billions of naira to fund its campaigns in the media was the same way the APC did theirs? Where did the APC get its campaign funds from? The opposition must be given the liberty to thrive.”
Reacting to an allegation that a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, benefited from the $2.1bn arms funds, Okupe said the former minister merely provided a service to the PDP during the electioneering and should not be questioned.
Okupe urged the President to be tolerant of criticism even as he condemned a statement credited to the National Chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, in which the APC chair asked Nigerians not to abuse Buhari.
He urged President Buhari to emulate former President Goodluck Jonathan whom he said was insulted by many leaders of the opposition but never retaliated.

PoliticsMetuh's Arrest: Buhari Not Dictating To EFCC, Says FG by sayyid(op): 2:37pm On Jan 06, 2016
The Federal Government on Wednesday faulted claims by the Peoples Democratic Party that the current ordeal of its spokesman, Chief Olisa Metuh, at the hands of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission was an attempt to silence the opposition.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated this in an interview with State House correspondents inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Mohammed was asked to react to protests currently trailing the arrest of Metuh and the prosecution of another leader of the PDP, Haliru Bello, as well as his son.
The minister said the Federal Government was not dictating to the nation’s anti-graft agencies on who to arrest or prosecute.
He urged journalists to also conduct their independent investigations on the allegations leveled against the suspects and verify if they were genuine or not.
Mohammed, “I think the first point to make is that this government is not micro-managing any of the anti-graft agencies. I know for a fact that they don’t contact the President or anybody before they do their job.
“I think the media also has to do more than they are doing right now, they should investigate these allegations and also make their independent judgment about it.
“Honestly, if the EFCC or ICPC says that they are able to trace certain amount of money to my account, I don’t want you to believe it, I want you to also ask for proof; do your investigation.
“I can assure you that this government, no functionary in government micromanages or directs the EFCC or ICPC on who to arrest and who not to arrest.”

PoliticsApc'll Be Disgraced In Southern Ijaw Election - Dickson by sayyid(op): 8:08am On Jan 05, 2016
The Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Seriake Dickson, has boasted that the opposition All Progressives Congress and its candidate, Timipre Sylva, will not stand a chance against him in the supplementary governorship election in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area on Saturday.
The governor beat his chest on Monday while addressing a press conference in Yenagoa. His address was titled ‘State of affairs in the past couple of weeks.’
Dickson said his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, would defeat the APC like it did in six out of the seven LGAs where the election was conducted on December 5, 2015 before it was declared inconclusive.
The rerun governorship election will be conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission in Southern Ijaw LGA and 101 other units across six LGAs.
Dickson said he had mobilised the people of Southern Ijaw to guard against snatching of ballot boxes, electoral materials and manipulation of the process by the opposition candidate and his agents.
He told journalists that he had been holding meetings with the various stakeholders in Southern Ijaw including chiefs and presidents of youth groups ahead of the rescheduled poll.
The governor said the APC leadership was desperate to capture Bayelsa to “expand their scope across the Atlantic (Ocean).”
“I have mobilised Southern Ijaw people and no one will be able to hijack electoral materials and take them to their homes to manipulate the process.
“The party, APC, is desperate. Their candidate is desperate. I hear they want to expand their empire across the Atlantic.”
According to Dickson, the Federal Government will be laying a foundation for another Boko Haram if non-state actors are allowed to bear arms and compromise the security of Bayelsa State.
He said although Sylva was his friend, he did not like his brand of politics of violence, adding that he (Dickson) would roundly defeat him and the APC again and again.
He advised the agencies of the Federal Government that have a role to play in the election not to deploy ‘federal might’ against the will of voters and rig the poll in favour of Sylva and the APC.
The governor stated, “I hereby restate my call on all federal institutions that have a role to play in the election to be non-partisan in order not to undermine the integrity of the electoral process and the nation’s democracy.”

PoliticsAregbesola Stops Doctors' Salaries Over Three Months Strike by sayyid(op): 7:28pm On Jan 03, 2016
Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, may have ordered the stoppage of salaries of doctors in the employment of the state government over the strike which started since September 28, 2015.
Investigation by our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday revealed that while some categories of workers had been paid October and November salaries, doctors have not been paid for the month October.
The state government had threatened to sack all the striking doctors if they failed to resume work on December 25. The doctors dared the governor but the next step which will be taken by the governor is not know yet.
However some doctors, who spoke to our correspondent said they were ready to be sacked than to treat their patients with divided attention.
The President of the Association of Resident Doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Osogbo, Dr. Adeyinka Owolabi, confirmed to our correspondent that doctors had not been paid since October.
Owolabi, who said doctors would not accept half salaries like other workers in the state because their salaries were the least among doctors through the country and they were being forced to pay the highest taxes.
The ARD president said it was dangerous to ask hungry doctors to be attending to patients, saying many doctors had become laughing stock because of their inability to meet their obligations.
Owolabi said, ” It is true that the state government has stopped our salaries. I am not sure if there was a circular to that effect but we did not receive October and November salaries alerts like other workers.
“There is no end in sight to the strike. The salary is the main cause of this strike and we can never accept half salaries because we are not going to give our patients half treatment. The government is adamant and we are also not going to shift ground on this.”
Owolabi, however, stated that the doctors would reconsider their position if the state government could sign a document that they were owing doctors half salaries and state when the balance would be paid.
The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Osun State, Dr. Suraj Ogunyemi, said the striking doctors and the state government had remained adamant on the issues.
Ogunyemi, who said he thought the state government would have found a solution to the strike problem before the dawn of the new year said it was unfortunate that the strike had dragged for over three months.
But the Consultant to the state government on Information, Mr. Sunday Akere, when contacted said the state government had been making efforts to ensure the strike was called off.
Akere said he believed “something better will happen this week.”
