Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday called on the nation’s elite to be ready to work hard and contribute to nation building. He said elite must take the front seat in the nation’s efforts aimed at tackling the nation’s political, economic and social challenges. A statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, quoted the Vice President as speaking while receiving the Save Democracy Group Africa at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari. “Our country needs an elite consensus across party, religious and ethnic lines, to say we have a country to build, let us do so,” Osinbajo was quoted as saying. The Vice President said the task of coming together in a large country like Nigeria could be a task, however he urged the group to forge a common political understanding among the people. He said the administration looked forward to concrete steps that would follow its forthcoming maiden summit to advance a democratic culture in the country and promised to convey the group’s requests for support in the summit to the President. Akande quoted the Chairman of the National Political Summit Planning Committee and former Speaker, House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Na’abba, as saying that the group was an effort to unite the political class and other stakeholders. He said it was to build a platform to promote democracy, stabilise the polity and promote the enthronement of internal democracy in the nation’s political parties. www.punchng.com/osinbajo-tasks-elite-on-nation-building/ |

The Federal Government has started tracing 35 people, who are believed to have had contact with the Lassa fever patient that died at the National Hospital, Abuja on Wednesday with 15 other people already under surveillance. The death of the 33-year-old brought the total number of Lass fever deaths in the country to 43 and marked the outbreak of Lassa fever in the Federal Capital Territory. The Director, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, Prof. Abdulsalami Nasidi, confirmed the contact tracingin an interview with journalists today in Abuja, adding that 15 persons had been placed under surveillance. The number of people under surveillance, according to him, might increase before the end of the day as the contact tracing is still on. When contacted, the Spokesperson of the National Hospital, Dr. Tayo Hastrup, said an isolation centre had been set up in the National Hospital for treatment of Lassa fever. He also said that hospital workers have been prepared for such cases should there be any reccurrence. Hastrup also revealed that the test conducted on the other suspected patient came out negative and assured FCT residents that the hospital was adequately prepared to deal with any emergency. Meanwhile, the Federal Government has ordered the immediate renovation of the Primary Healthcare Centre in Fuka, Muyan Local Government of Niger State. The renovation is part of steps to reposition the centre to render 24-hours service for any suspected case of Lassa fever. Lassa fever is an acute febrile illness, with bleeding and death in severe cases, caused by the Lassa fever virus with an incubation period of six-21 days. About 80 per cent of human infections are asymptomatic. The remaining cases have severe multi-system disease, where the virus affects several organs in the body, such as the liver, spleen and kidneys. The onset of the disease is usually gradual, starting with fever, general weakness, and malaise followed by headache, sore throat, muscle pain, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough, and bleeding from mouth, nose, vagina or gastrointestinal tract, and low blood pressure. The reservoir or host of the Lassa virus is the “multimammate rat” called Mastomys natalensis which has many breasts and lives in the bush and peri-residential areas. www.punchng.com/lassa-fever-fg-places-15-persons-under-surveillance-seeks-35-others/ |
Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, says the report of the ad hoc committee set up to investigate the claims of the missing 2016 Budget indicated that the Senate received two versions of the budget from the Presidency. According to Saraki, the Senate received one version of the budget directly from President Muhammadu Buhari and the other from the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matter, Ita Enang. The Senate President, who stated this in a series of tweets on his official Twitter handle on Thursday, insisted that the budget was never missing as being claimed. He, however, said the Senate would accept only the budget presented directly by President Buhari. He said, “The budget was never missing. While the President submitted one, his Senior Special Assistant, Ita Enang, submitted another. Hence the reason for an investigation! “Today, the Senate received the report of the ad hoc committee setup to investigate the claims of the missing 2016 Budget. “The report of the committee revealed that the Senate received two versions of the 2016 Appropriation Bill – one from President Muhammadu Buhari at the December 22nd, 2015 Joint Session of the National Assembly, and another from the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang. “The Senate will only accept the version of the appropriation bill that was presented by the President.” www.punchng.com/senate-got-two-versions-of-budgets-from-presidency-saraki/ |

Senate President Bukola Saraki has said that a committee saddled with the responsibility of investigating the controversy over the Senate’s copy of the 2016 budget will submit its report on Thursday. Saraki, who gave the assurance on resumption of plenary on Wednesday, confirmed that the issue was discussed at the executive session of the chamber on Tuesday. He said copies of the document would be distributed to members as from Thursday, adding that members would begin a three-day debate on the 2016 Appropriation Bill from Tuesday next week. Saraki spoke on the confusion over the Senate’s copy of the budget proposal after the Chairman, Senate Committee on Information, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, raised a point of order, drawing the attention of the Senate to the media report insinuating that the document was indeed, missing from the red chamber. “The matter that I refer to is what is in every newspaper today, everywhere in all the talkshows on radio – of a missing budget and therefore Mr. President, I want to bring to your attention and all my colleagues that yesterday (Tuesday) at our close session, this matter also came up,” Abaribe said. “Some of us have been inundated by messages from our constituents who are really worried about what their fate will be in 2016, and are asking about the whereabouts of the budget document. “That is why I think it is definite and it is urgent that we look into this matter.” Obviously boxed into a tight corner over the issue, Saraki said since all the senators were part of the issue as extensively discussed at the executive session on Tuesday, it was better to wait for the report of the committee saddled with the responsibility of searching for the missing document. “You know we are all part of the decision at the close session yesterday (Tuesday) and as part of that decision, we are still waiting for those we have referred to carry out the assignment to come back to us,” he said. “I think they will come back to us by tomorrow and we will go into a closed session, finish up the report and we will be able to debate it properly.” www.punchng.com/well-receive-report-on-missing-budget-tomorrow-saraki/ |

The Ohanaeze Youth Council, on Tuesday, asked a former governor of the old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo, to explain how he shared the N500m he allegedly received from ex-National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd) for former President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign in the South-East. Nwobodo, also a former information, and sports minister, recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressive Congress, a move some have described as an attempt to avoid prosecution for his alleged role in the arms deal scandal. Reacting to the development, the Ohanaeze Youth Council, through its National President, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and the National Secretary, Okwu Nnabuike, gave Nwobodo 21 days to tell Nigerians the beneficiaries of the said sum. They noted that PDP chieftains from other geo-political zones, who were said to have received similar funds from Dasuki, had disclosed how the sums they collected were disbursed. The group said if Nwobodo failed to disclose the beneficiaries within the next 21 days, it would take appropriate action to ensure that the full weight of the law descended on him. The OYC urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to arrest the elder statesmen. “We charge Nwobodo to let Nigerians know how he disbursed the N500m which he received from Dasuki. “He should take a clue from Dasuki as well as Chief Tony Anenih, who have since disclosed how they shared money made available to them. “Since Nwobodo said the money was meant for Jonathan’s mobilisation campaign in the South-East, he should let the world know how he disbursed the money – he should disclose the identities of all the South-East leaders and politicians who received money from him and how much he gave to each of them. “If he pocketed the money, he should also let the world know,” the Ohanaeze youth wing said. The group stressed that that the defection of politicians, including Nwobodo, to the APC should not shield them from the law. It added, “We also wish to remind him that President Muhammdu Buhari jailed him as a military head of state and so history is about to be made as the same President may jail him again – this time, he may bag bigger sentence. “The EFCC should not hesitate to arrest all the people who had in one way or the other contributed to running this country’s economy down. “All we ask the Commission is that it should be total and thorough in its arrest and prosecution. No looter should go unpunished.” www.punchng.com/23864-2/ |
