Ahead of the National Executive Committee meeting scheduled to hold tomorrow, July 3, among members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former vice president, Atiku Abuakar has made a request. In a report published on The Punch, Atiku has urged leaders of the APC to come together and resolve its differences. He advised leaders of the party to shift from extreme positions to the centre in the interest of democracy, the party, the new administration and the country at large. This was contained in a statement released by his media office in Abuja. Atiku, who is currently observing the Muslim Lesser Hajj (Umrah) in Saudi Arabia, called for the concentration of positive energies on building unity, cohesion and harmony among party leaders and other stakeholders. He said: “We can resolve our differences when our leaders individually and collectively shift grounds from extreme positions and move to the centre in the interest of our party and our country.” He expressed deep concerns that the APC soon after capturing power, has torn apart at a time more energy is needed to attend to the objectives of the change agenda for which it was voted into power. Atiku Abubakar He said it was high time the party overcame its current crisis of confidence arising from the National Assembly election of principal officers. The statement partly read: “While restating his commitment to the party and its change agenda, the former Vice President advise the party leaders not to allow people of bad faith to fuel division and acrimony among the party, adding that all positive energies should be directed towards sustaining the morale of the voters who look forward to the APC to make their lives better. “He reminded party leaders that any division could be exploited at the expense of the party. He extended his goodwill to the party for successful deliberations and assured the party of continued support and loyalty at all times.” The NEC meeting is expected to be attended by President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, the party’s national leader, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, the party’s 22 state governors and several other prominent members of the party. Meanwhile, Atiku has described the tenure of the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, as impressive and invaluable. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that the Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, plans to amass debt and ‘plunge the state into an abyss of debt’ . Nyesom Wike In a statement yesterday, July 1, the party’s secretary, Chris Finebone, said it had uncovered plans by the governor to wreck the state’s treasury by borrowing the tune of N100 billion. The statement claims the governor intends to borrow the sums of N10, N20, N30 and N40 billion respectively in a period of two months. It added that Wike has even contacted a few banks in recent times, in a bid to expedite his plans. “Information we are privy to, strongly indicates that the governor and his men have started negotiation with Heritage and Eco Banks to obtain another loan of N30b in the coming week or so. This will bring the total amount of loan obtained by the embattled governor to N60b in less than 45 days as governor of Rivers State,” Fishbone, said. READ ALSO : Nyesom Wike On The Run – APC In another development, a group operating under the aegis of Nigeria Against Corruption Group has alleged that fraudulent activities occurred in the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) under the supervision of Wike at the time he was the minister of state for education. One Month In Office: New Governors, New Hopes. Nigeria’s newly elected governors have spent one month in their respective offices already. While some have hit the ground running, others are still crying wolf over their predecessors’ actions and others running to the Federal Capital Territory every now and then to queue for “Abuja Money. this are compilation of a list comprising 5 new governors who have shown their intention to perform from day one. Read below: 1. Nyesome Wike (Rivers): If there is any governor who resumed office with the zeal to perform, then Nyesome Wike is the right choice. From the first day he resumed, Wike set out to restore the lost glory of Rivers state which his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, practically left to rot because of politics. Wike immediately opened the courts that was under lock and key by Amaechi for months, started renovation of the abandoned Port Harcourt roads, visited markets, made key appointments, directed the payment of April and May salaries of civil servants in the state, started an inspection tour of projects and generally get down to business all within a month. 2. Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia): Apparently aware that he took over from one of the worst governors in the last dispensation; Theodore Orji, who happens to be his benefactor, Governor Ikpeazu has decided to let sleeping dogs lie and has started efforts at cleaning up the mess left by Orji. He has started tackling the huge salary arrears, pensions and gratuities he inherited from his predecessor. 3. Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna): Despite the disastrous state in which his predecessor left the state, El-Rufai has trudged on without much complaint and has instead made major moves aimed at reducing the cost of governance. Like the professional that he is, El-Rufai has since settled down to the nitty- gritty of governance and has started making his impact felt in Kaduna state. 4. Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos): As if trying to distance himself from his predecessor’s style of governance which has been dubbed “elitist” by some analysts, Ambode has quickly identified with the down trodden in Lagos. Several visits to the suburbs for inspection of on-going projects, abandoning the luxurious Marina House for the hustle and bustle of Alausa and making concrete efforts aimed at ending the Apapa traffic gridlock al point to this fact. With sleeves rolled up and a jeans to match always, the Epe-born governor has given early signals that Lagosians won’t regret voting him into power. 5.Senator Ben Ayade (Cross-River): This is one governor who was well prepared for the task ahead. He has always been in the news for the right reasons and has also reached out to the opposition to move the state forward. From locking civil servants out of work for lateness, to commencing the process of building a garment industry, cocoa processing plant, rice mill and modular refinery in the state. Ayade has shown that he is not in the government house for child’s play. Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party have criticised President Muhammadu Buhari on his performance in the last 30 days, saying his performance was “30 days of all motion and no movement.” Sources: Naij.com news |
Why are you not often recruited? It is reasonably indisputable that the process of job search is a tremendous adventure that everyone, graduates and non-graduates alike should take seriously. Job Seekers in Nigeria This process is even usually more difficult than the more demanding job when you finally get the job. Talking about the process one goes through when one hunts for a job, no one would easily forget in a hurry, the most outstandingly bad common don’ts like: *Arriving late at an interview *Answering a call during the course of the interview *Going for an interview with a CV full of typo errors *Using a silly e-mail that sounds like “ nkem4jesuschrist@whatever.com” *Not being able to demonstrate that you’ve researched the employer *Trying to talk down your last boss *Giving your follow up a big negligence Apart from all of those don’ts, you may not have considered some of the less-discussed, under-the-radar issues. Give this list a look and ask yourself, if any of them has anything to do with you. 1. Your expectations are not reasonable No one hates to work in multinationals like Chevron, MTN, Shell, where one would be paid a huge amount of money as generally believed by young people. Everyone wants to blast overnight. Everyone wants to grab that job that pays so high that within a short period of months, houses and cars are acquired. However, if your personal requirements are on the high side and if eventually during your interview you’re being too demanding, you could end up not getting the pursued job. You think you made the best grade in school, so you don’t see any reason why you should compromise. You have got to try to analyze your wants and needs. Which ones must you take first? Which one of them could be negotiable? Which can be put on hold for the moment? 2. Depending so much on one method of search It could possibly be that you are only applying online, or only networking, or only using employment agencies, or only approaching companies that you know are hiring. Hey! You don’t have to restrict or limit yourself to just one job-search method. Why not give all a Try? Spread your tentacles and cast a wide net, continue to build your connections and be highly creative in your search methods. 3. You use the word “I” too often in your cover letter By putting the focus more on the potential employers than on yourself, you make it the most effective way to endear yourself to them. Prove to them that you’ve done your homework and understand much better what your target companies are seeking. Then, express it to them how you intend to make things happen and fill those needs. 4. Do you really demonstrate long-term potential as your unique point? You get caught up in such moments when you feel that you are in a dire need of a job now. But employers, the good ones at least, tend to think in terms of long term plan for their companies and what you are bringing to the table. They want to know not only how you will contribute today but in the future too. That “where do you see yourself in five years?” question is not being asked for nothing. So, what have you got to offer? Do you want to show them that once you get a better job, you will quit? That impression could make you remain unemployed. 5. You are unknowingly repeating mistakes After interviews, are you taking the time to review and analyze them? Many times the reason you don’t get a job is beyond your control, and, in fact, it has nothing to do with you, but not always. Trying to understand why the answer was “No” may help you to redress your approach next time you face another. 6. You have not rehearsed You may hesitate to rehearse answers to the most common questions. You don’t want to sound canned. You want to be yourself. But consider the benefits of creating great answers to those questions you hear the most; those short, vivid, three-sentence answers with factual examples and quotes and learning to speak with conviction and confidence to go a long way to getting you that job. 7. You put your job search on hold while waiting to hear back Everyone falls into this trap in one way or the other. You’ve had a super couple of interviews with your dream employer. You just know you’re going to get “that call” anytime soon. You tell yourself “I’m going to hold off until I hear back; after all, I deserve a little break.” Of course, you deserve a little break but the question is “to what end?” What if the call does not come? You have to keep on networking, applying, going for interviews, and researching until you have a firm job offer in hand. Grab these points, you will not regret any of them Sources: Naij.com news |
Traders In Anambra Must Pay Taxes - Obiano Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state has asked traders in the state to brace up as they will start paying taxes and levies for the development of the state. Governor Willie Obiano Obiano said this at the inauguration of the Traders’ House built by the Amalgamated Market Traders Association of Anambra State (AMATAS ) on Wednesday in Onitsha, the Anambra State capital. The governor who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Nkem Okeke, noted that taxes were needed by the state government to meet various social and infrastructural obligations it owes the citizenry. “ The government had performed excellently well in security, construction and re-construction of roads as well as environmental cleanliness, which all of you can attest to. “But we cannot do all these and sustain them without your cooperation through paying your taxes and levies; since traders make up 75 per cent of the population of the state. “Again, it is clear to everyone in the country that allocation from the Federation Account is dwindling and we need to shore up our Internal Revenue Generation through streamlining our taxes and levies generation, ’’ he said. Obiano also tasked the traders to always help state clean, especially Onitsha. He dismissed rumour making the rounds that commercial motorcycle operators were banned in the state, saying that the government only stopped them from plying some major roads that could pose danger to them and their passengers. In his earlier remark, the commissioner for Industries, Trade and Commerce, Ifeatu Onejeme, had said that the new secretariat of traders would serve as a unifying factor that would bring peace and progress to traders in the state. Onejeme promised that once the government conclude on the ongoing electrification project in the most markets in the state, the markets will operate 24 hours daily. The President-General of AMATAS, Chief Okwudili Ezenwankwo, said that the completion of the Traders’ House in record time portrayed the leadership of traders as visionary and purposeful. He thanked the government for its financial support. Sources: Naij.com news , Punch Nigeria |
President Buhari Finally Meets Dogara Yakubu Dogara, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, plans to visit President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock villa on July 1, Wednesday night. The meeting will hold at the First Lady Conference Room by 10pm. There had been speculations that President Buhari has rejected to see Bukola Saraki, Senate President, and Dogara after their repeated defiance of his ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC). Saraki and Dogara were elected to the posts against the wishes of the APC after they went ahead to contest and win despite being excluded via a straw poll. The APC had firstly chosen Senator Ahmed Lawan andFemi Gbajabiamila as its sole candidates for the positions. The National Assembly had been involved in leadership crisis following their emergence on June 9. The development had also stopped the nomination of other principal officers. The President may also be meeting Saraki any moment from now. Sources: Naij.com news , The Nation |

The former Edo State governor and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Professor Oserheimen Osunbor has recently revealed the reasons behind his resolution to leave the party. Osunbor Osunbor who moved abruptly to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a recent interview with Daily Independent disclosed that “first, the appointment that I had was due to my personal relationship with former President Jonathan. Because the same man who claims to be god didn’t even want Jonathan to give me that appointment. So it couldn’t have been a party-influenced appointment. The second one is that I’ve always supported Comrade Adams Oshiomhole since the 2012 governorship election in Edo State, but the PDP had been supporting him even before then. I’m sure you know that the PDP traded off my position as governor of Edo State. I will be surprised if you as journalists do not know that now. A number of PDP governors were targeted and traded off for the opposition in order for the party to have its way in some other places. If there is a Nigerian who doesn’t know that, then I will be surprised. So, PDP traded off my position as governor of Edo State. So if PDP government gave me an appointment as the chairman of Nigerian Law Reform Commission, was that really a fair compensation for removing me? This is because at that time, the then National Chairman of the party, Chief Vincent Ogbulafor, boasted to me that the PDP had 28 states and that the PDP was not bound to win everything, and that the PDP was ready to concede some states to the opposition. He told me if I didn’t succumb to Chief Tony Anenih I ran the risk of losing my seat. And after I was removed, he asked me: ‘You see what I was telling you. “Did you see what has happened?’ He said that if I had listened to him, I wouldn’t have been removed. When Adams Oshiomhole came in, he gave three commissionership slots to Chief Anenih in appreciation for the help he gave him to become governor. That was before 2012. So when people claimed that I supported Adams Oshiomhole, I ask, who gave Adams Oshiomhole more support, the PDP leadership or myself? But, of course, I supported Adams Oshiomhole in 2012 when it dawned on me that the PDP leadership was not ready to win the election. I knew that all the leadership wanted was to trade with PDP in that election and amass billions for themselves. And I was not prepared to be led by people who were out to use the party to enrich themselves. Then I said to myself that if we have all decided to make things very easy for Oshiomhole, why should I withhold my support for him? After all, he has done more work in four years than the PDP could have ever done in all its years as a ruling party in Edo State. “As for the issue of begging Chief Anenih, the newspapers have reported many times that I have gone to beg him. Again I would be surprised if you have not read those stories. Personally, I don’t know what I did to him, other than that, according to him, he borrowed N200 million to finance my election. I didn’t see any N200 million that Chief Anenih contributed to finance my election. But I’m aware that he contributed N100 million to the PDP in Edo State and as governor, I ensured that that money was paid to him. So he was then saying that we never paid him any money, that he borrowed N200million. I do know that it was against the electoral Act for any individual to spend that kind of money in support of a governorship candidate. So, is he saying that he violated the Electoral Act and used 200 million to install me as a governor? And if he spent 200 million of his money to install me as governor, how much contribution did he receive from the PDP national headquarters? The State House also sent money to states for governorship elections in the states. How much was sent, I don’t know because the money was not sent to me. And how much did he get from other individuals and corporate bodies who were contributing money for the election in Edo State? I don’t know how much he was given, and if he borrowed 200 million for my election after all the contributions, I never saw any 200 million. But in the interest of peace, I ensured that the one I knew he contributed was paid back to him. So what offence did I really commit against him that he doesn’t want to forgive? Of course, it doesn’t surprise me because he had told me before when the relationship was rosy that he doesn’t forgive people.” Osunbor noted that he knew that if he had offended Anenih, he would not be forgiven because the chief had told him that he never forgives people. “Although, he is not my God, and he cannot influence my destiny or whatever God wants me to become in life. So if I beg him does not mean that he can make me anything, or can prevent anything that God wants me to achieve. I only asked for forgiveness in the interest of peace and the development of our people,” he concluded . In the light of all these controversies surrounding the party, Osunbor was sometime ago indicted by the National Human Rights Commission for perpetrating electoral impunity. As Greece struggles to get through its debt crisis, it is high time we had a look at the African economy , the situation with the African debt has worsened, with the IMF warning about the uncontrollable debt rise. Could a country whose debt increased by 13.4% and GDP grew by 12.7% in the same year be considered a fast-growing economy? What if the contracted debt had interest rate at 6%, would the country still be a fast-growing economy? That is the story of Ethiopia, one of the media-heralded fast-growing African economies. Now let’s take a look at the consolidated 2010 data sets of ten African countries labelled “fastest-growing economies” by the international press. Uganda’s debt grew by 12.5% while its GDP increased only by 6.2%. Zambia’s debt increased by 12.2% while its GDP grew by 7.6%. Cameroon’s debt grew by 9.1% while its GDP increased by 2.4%. Angola’s debt grew by 9.1% while its GDP increased by 3.4%. Ghana’s debt grew by 8.8% while its GDP increased by 8%. Ivory Coast’s debt grew by 9.1% while its GDP increased only by 2.4%. Nigeria, one of the least-indebted African countries, increased its debt by 6.5% while its GDP grew by 8%. Senegal’s debt increased by 4.2% while its GDP grew by 4.3%. Kenya’s debt increased by 5.6% while its GDP grew by 5.8%. One could easily dismiss our comparison of debt to GDP growth on the ground that debt is often contracted to make investments, which would impact GDP only in the upcoming years. The above argument would be valid at only one condition: if African economies grew by at least 6 to 8% every year just to be able to pay the interest of their commercial debt, and, more so, to pay off the debt at maturity and still have money left to develop local infrastructure without continuing to borrow for growth. To paint a much darker picture of the predicament of our debt increase, let’s add to the debts’ interests rate the continued depreciation of African currency against the US dollar and the euro. From 2000 to 2013, average annual currency depreciation in sub- Saharan Africa was 3-4%, amounting to 44% cumulatively over the decade, according to “Regional economic outlook. Sub-Saharan Africa,” a survey by the IMF. Unsurprisingly, the current ratio of debt to GDP of the majority of African countries is moving over 50%, which means their cumulative debt is equal to half of their GDP. That’s very high. Unfortunately, deceptive economists are telling our countries that their ratios are less than the ones of the developed countries like the US, which is 95% of its GDP, UK, 400% of its GDP, EU with 85% of their GDP. According the Jubilee Debt Campaign (JDC) policy officer, Tim Jones, African countries should be careful while comparing their ratio to the ones of the rich countries. “As well as owing large debts, countries such as the US and the UK also have large debts owed to them. Most of the debt owed by and to the UK is through banks, rather than the government. Taking account of debts owed to the UK, whether to the government or private sector, external debt is around 20%. This is lower than many developing countries, as well as EU members such as Ireland and Spain,” he declared . Put simply, the real ratio to debt of rich countries is only 20%, while the one of African countries is moving to over 50%, regardless of the fact that many African countries had recently rebased their GDP to look much bigger. Ghana had increased its GDP by 60% just with clever mathematical formula invented by international financiers. Nigeria went through a similar process of GDP rebase to become the biggest economy in Africa. The above statement means that, without the GPD rebase gimmicks, our countries’ debt to GDP ratio might be much larger, even worrisome. We have all heard about the ‘Africa Rising’ rhetoric. The story goes like this: Africa is the new frontier of opportunities. With double-digit growth in many sub-Saharan African countries , it’s time to take Africa seriously and seize opportunities. The well-orchestrated media coverage of that narrative resulted in an accelerated growth of direct foreign investment in Africa but also in new channels of financing like the Eurobonds. Not all debts are bad, but as Nobel prize- winning economist Joseph Stiglitz put it: “The financial sector loves to find people to prey on, and their most recent prey are governments in developing countries. They get overindebted, they get a bailout from the World Bank and the IMF and they start over again. I think it’s unconscionable, but their memory is short and their greed is large, so it’s going to happen again.” Nick Dearden, the director of the World Development Movement, advised developing countries to use borrowed funds to reduce commodity dependency: “Getting more minerals out of the ground may be very beneficial for Western nations … but if it’s not developing African economies in a genuine way they’re likely to be left with the debt and none of the resources they’ve invested in.” Funny enough, in order to get the money back, the main goal of fighting corruption in Africa is not to reduce poverty or improve good governance anymore, but to make sure African countries can pay back their debt to their commercial creditors, the IMF and the World Bank. It’s likely that poverty rate would continue to increase on the continent, because there would be no money left for social development, regardless of GDP growth. All the net value created by Africans would be transferred out of the continent. The future of Sources: Naij.com news |

The Ahmed Joda-led transition committee has urged President, Muhammadu Buhari, to borrow immediately if he must offset the backlog of unpaid salaries. According to Joda, in order to deal with crippling fuel crisis, and backlog of unpaid salaries by states and the federal government, Buhari must “borrow immediately or use CBN (Central Bank) advances for salaries and fuel subsidies to avoid chaos.” The committee revealed further that the handover notes from the Goodluck Jonathan administration showed aggregate contractor liabilities of N4 trillion as at April 2015, out of which the Ministry of Education owed the most at N1.2 trillion, followed by the finance ministry which has N467.7 billion. According to the exclusive report obtained by Premium Times, the committee warned Buhari that, it would be irrational to rely on the purported huge balances the former government claimed it left behind. Among its discoveries as regards some claims made by the former government, he said: “the aging of these liabilities was not provided; a detailed list of contracts was not provided and therefore, some balances maybe double counted (eg contracts funded through debt maybe captured in both MoF and the contracting Ministry); some balances may be disputed. “Therefore, liabilities may change once settlement/judgement is reached; no documentation was provided to confirm if the projects were executed to the agreed specifications; some contracts maybe cancelled or terminated. “The mandate of this Task-Force is to confirm the existence of the liability and authenticate the accuracy of information provided in the handover notes. The Government should only recognise the liabilities verified and confirmed by this Task-Force,” he said. In a related development, the transition committee has asked the president to sack the last-minute appointees by the immediate past president, Jonathan, especially after losing the March 28 presidential election. Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa state is set to emerge as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Bayelsa state governorship election, scheduled to hold in December this year. A source within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) told Peoples Daily that various groups within the state have endorsed the governor. The party has therefore decided not to conduct a primary election, which they say is not in the interest of the party. The source said, “despite opposition to the governor, the party’s leadership thought it wise to give automatic ticket to Dickson because members were convinced that he was actually on the ground in Bayelsa State. Being an incumbent, it would be more reasonable because going into primary will likely divide the party more than allowing the governor to re- contest as a sole candidate with high possibility to win the election.” He further stated that the issue of performance was considered and Dickson excelled on that front after which he was given the first right of refusal as a because they feel he has an advantage as an incumbent and also Bayelsa state being a strategic state for the party to retain. He said, “The honour has been unanimously accepted and adopted. It is true Governor Seriake Dickson will likely emerge as our candidate for the governorship election in Bayelsa State in due course. You know a lot of issues were considered before the national leadership gave the nod. “First we are interested in winning the state. You can see the situation in our party now since the last election, so winning Bayelsa is a must for us. Then if you look at all the current dynamics shaping politics in that state, it is clear that we have to apply tact and come up with a winning strategy in Bayelsa State. “So, being a performing governor who also has the support of members and the state executive, he has been adopted as our sole candidate. “How many states are paying salaries? Dickson was recently eulogized through a vote of confidence by the State House of Assembly for his regular payment of salaries and settlement of about N242 billion out of the N332 billion debts said to have been incurred by his predecessor, Timipre Sylva.” The governor, last week, lambasted some members of the PDP in the state, who defected to the opposition, All Progressives Congress, saying their actions were motivated by greed. Two members of the former president Goodluck Jonathan’s administration have reacted to Friday’s order by President Muhammadu Buhari to dissolve the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). The officials of the previous cabinet shared their views with a correspondent of Sahara Reporters on condition of anonymity. They noted that that there was no reason for President Buhari to send a letter to the board of the NNPC to dissolve it. “That act [President Buhari’s dissolution of the NNPC board] is null since there was no board in place after the former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke left office,” one of the sources said. According to the Petroleum Act, the NNPC board stood dissolved the moment the minister of petroleum resources left her office on May 29, 2015, the day when the tenure of the current president started. A second speaker, who was connected to the dismissed board, said that the last administration left USD5 billion in the accounts for the Buhari government. The funds were formed by dividends from liquefied natural gas sales. However, Babs Omotowa, the chief executive of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas company (NLNG), claimed that the company paid USD1.6 billion in dividends to the new government. The NLNG is a joint venture between the Nigerian government and multinational oil companies. This figure contradicts the amount named by Jonathan’s official. The speaker said this contradiction can be explained in two ways. Either President Buhari was hiding the correct amount paid to his government in order to justify his claim of inheriting “an empty treasury” , or the NLNG was playing a game on Nigerians. |
