Further break down of the external debt revealed that Nigeria owe multilateral organisations USD7.23 billion as against USD6.54 billion in the first quarter. Debt stock owed to countries and or their financial institutions ( Bilateral) stood at USD1.58 billion, from USD1.42 billion in the first quarter. The country owe World Bank Group a whooping USD6.19 billion, rising from USD5.73 billion, while the African Development Bank Group was owed USD1.04 billion, up from USD810 million. Nigeria depends on oil sales for about 70 percent of its government revenues. Meanwhile, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, has advised President Buhari to consider selling off nearly half of Nigeria’s Joint Venture equity with multinational oil companies, to enable his government to raise a huge balance for immediate developmental projects. The parliament of Tunisia approved legislation allowing the death penalty for those convicted of terrorism offences, Death penalty is caused by the fact that dozens of foreign visitors were killed by terrorists in the past few months . For example, in June ISIS killed 38 tourists in Tunisia while in March gunmen killed 21 foreigners in the country. On Saturday the bill was approved by a margin of 174-0 with 10 abstentions after three days of debate. The source notes that Human Rights Watch had criticised the bill. The organization said: “It would open the way to prosecuting political dissent as terrorism, give judges overly broad powers and curtail lawyers’ ability to provide an effective defence”. The Guardian explained that the new law against terrorism and money laundering permits the death penalty for terrorism-related offences such as killings of foreign visitors or of someone enjoying international protection. Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is set to visit his Cameroonian counterpart Paul Biya over the issue of Boko Haram insurgency ravaging both countries. This was disclosed on Monday, July 27, by the presidential spokesman Femi Adesina, Vanguard reports. “President Buhari is going to Cameroon on Wednesday. He will hold talks with President Biya on arrival and the issue of Boko Haram will be central in their discussion.” “The visit is part of the consultation on the Boko Haram insurgency. He was to have gone on the visit in June but for the invitation to Germany by the G7.” Another media representative of President Buhari, Garba Shehu confirmed the information saying: “The one-day visit to Cameroon aims to build a strong regional alliance to confront Boko Haram.” It should be recalled that great hopes are being put upon the Multi-National Joint Task Force, which is expected to start the new stage in anti-terrorism war in the region. Without giving details on the deployment of regional troops, Shehu, however said it “will still be at the end of this month”. This weekend both countries fell under Boko Haram attacks. On Saturday a 12-year-old girl was used for a suicide bombing in Cameroon’s Maroua, with at least 18 people killed. On the next day a powerful blast in Nigeria’s Damaturu claimed no fewer than 15 lives Source:Naij news |

Former Minister of Aviation and spokesperson for the Goodluck Jonathan presidential campaign organisation, Femi Fani-Kayode has written an inspirational piece. The former minister of aviation, who recently changed his name to celebrate his acquittal of charges of corruption after seven years of trial is sure a full of inspiration. Read the article he titled, ‘The Power of Inspiration below: Dark is the heart that weeps and bleeds. Pure is the spirit that overcomes pain. Free is the soul that activates faith. Pure is the joy that true love brings. Yet most important of all is the power of inspiration. That grace and strength that encouraging words, steeped in knowledge and experience, bring. We can only heal and help those in pain when we ourselves once experienced that pain. We can only shed light in darkness when we ourselves once walked in that darkness. We can only lift others up when we ourselves have once been down. Inspirational prose is like speaking in tongues to the unlettered- they cannot possibly understand or appreciate it. They know not it’s value and they have no use for it’s strength. Like Shakespeare once said, to them, ‘’tis caviar to the general’’. Yet to refined souls and sensitive spirits it is everything. It is the shield that protects and preserves our hearts, thoughts and emotions- it is the very essence of our being. To the learned and enlightened it is like the burning fire, bringing in glory and blessings and ushering in the marvellous heat of the golden sun. It inspires, it brings laughter, it brings tears of joy. It brings hope even to the most hopeless and it ushers in a rustic and complex form of spiritual resurrection and rejuvanation. That is why it is wise and good to learn from our experiences and share it with others. One short and encouraging note to a despairing soul may well save a life. One kind smile or a few words laced in love may well give cause for those who have lost all hope to think again and give life another chance. One tiny expression of compassion or passion and one small gesture of kindness, support and love to even the most unlovable may change them forever. A helping hand extended to a complete stranger may inspire that stranger to have faith in humanity and to have an encounter with God. May those that understand the essence of these words never lose sight of this glaring veracity. May those who laugh to scorn the power of prose and the beauty of the word continue to wallow in their abject poverty of the mind and dearth of knowledge and understanding. In all, strive to love, to care for others, to show compassion, to be merciful, to be kind, to be loving, to be forgiving and most important of all seek to inspire and bring hope to others. An encouraging smile to the weakest and most frightened amongst us at the most unexpected moment could do it. Or perhaps an unexpected phone call to a long lost friend. Whatever it takes give someone joy, particularly the lost, those in pain and the broken-hearted, that our Lord in heaven, the God of mercy and truth, may know your worth. This is indeed God’s work and it is a glaring expression of the power of inspiration. Sources: Linda Ikeji's Blog, Naij.com news |
The Ebonyi State Police Command, yesterday
foiled plans by the Vikings cult sect of
initiating 46 graduating students of a popular
mission secondary school in Izzi local
government area of Ebonyi State
These students had just concluded
their Senior School Certificate Examination,
conducted by the National Examination
Council, were said to be members of a cult
group identified as Junior Vikings.
Nigerian Police
They had gathered at a hotel in the metropolis
located along old Enugu Road to be initiated
into the Senior Vikings until police swooped in
after being tipped off.
The Police arrested over 15 on the spot while
the initiators fled.
Police spokesman in the state, Chris Anyanwu
said that these initiators were dangerous as
they hunt the young men of the state to lead
to crime.
He said that the police have mounted a man-
hunt to arrest the fleeing suspects.
He explained that the initiators, the members
of the Senior Vikings had demanded the
students all dress in white hats, red shirts and
black trousers and attend, if they failed to

Nigeria Awaits Buhari’s Social Welfare
Program According to the World Bank, only 55 percent of the world’s poor are covered in social safety net programs meant to provide regular and predictable support to poor and vulnerable people. One of President Buhari’s campaign promises was to create a Social Welfare Program for about 25 million poorest and most vulnerable citizens on a monthly stipend of at least N5,000. The President also promised to provide allowances to discharged but unemployed Youth Corps members for 12 months. These promises are challenged by the reality of Nigeria’s dwindling and near- empty treasury due to a drop in the global price of crude oil. But Nigeria cannot afford to be left behind. An inventory of social safety net programs by the World Bank shows that three quarters of the poorest people in low- and lower-middle income countries, and more than one-third of the poorest people in middle-income countries lack safety net coverage and remain at risk of slipping into extreme poverty and vulnerable to disease. “ More countries at all income levels are investing in social safety net programs because they are transformational. ‘There is strong body of evidence that these programs ensure poor families can invest in the health and education of their children, improve their productivity, and cope with shocks,” said Arup Banerji, the World Bank Group’s Senior Director for Social Protection and Labour. In the State of Social Safety Nets 2015, 120 developing countries spent around $329 billion on social safety nets between 2010 and 2014. The cost is far less than what most governments spend on subsidising fuel prices. It is expected that once President Buhari-led government finally gets to work, Nigeria will devote more time to capturing closing gaps in terms of ensuring that more beneficiaries are covered by social safety nets. In Sub-Saharan Africa generally, where a large fraction of the global poor live, social safety nets cover just one-tenth of the poorest of the population. Being the most populous country in the continent with little coverage, Nigeria adds significantly to the deficits in the number of poor people not covered. Other highlights of the report also dwelled on the importance of safety net programs in reducing the poverty headcount rate by 8 percent and the poverty gap by 15 percent on average of the poverty gap without safety nets. “Going forward, more can be done to close the coverage gap and reach the world’s poorest by improving the effectiveness of these programs underpinned by enhanced targeting, improved policy coherence, better administrative integration, and application of technologies,” Banerji said . African governments are beginning to promote the creation of social welfare programs to carter for the poorest of the poor. According to the World Bank, poverty rate in Nigeria was pegged at 33.1% in 2013, this significantly adds to the statistics of the poorest in the world. Nigeria also ranked third on world poverty index in 2013. Sources: Naij.com news |

The former governor of Jigawa state, Sule
Lamido, and his sons, have been transferred
from Kano prison to Kuje prison in Abuja,
Premium Times reports.
According to a prison official who spoke to
the media outfit, the former governor and his
sons were taken away from the prison at
about 10am on Monday, July 13, 2015.
He said the former governor and his sons
were moved into the Abuja prison at about
4pm on Monday.
The ex-governor, who is facing corruption
charges, could have been transported to Abuja
by road as there was no sign they were to
travel by air, the source disclosed.
Another source said some of the former
governor’s aides had moved to Abuja in
preparations for a possible bail hearing.
However, Effiong Effiong, Lamido’s counsel,
succeeded in having a vacation judge
assigned to hear the case in Abuja.
Wilson Uwujaren, spokesperson for the EFCC,
however told Premium Times that he did not
have the information about the transfer.
It was gathered that several people trooped to
the Kano prison waiting to see Lamido
unaware of his transfer.
On Wednesday, July, 9, 2015, a federal judge
ordered ex-governor Lamido and his sons be
detained in Kano prison till September 28,
2015, when their bail applications would be
heard.
Shortly after he was remanded in prison
custody together with his sons over money

There is no wonder that with swearing in of a
new president the changes in the leadership
of Nigerian Armed Forces will come. But as
with the appointment of new ministers
President Muhammadu Buhari was not in a
hurry in replacing services chiefs. So what are
the reasons of such development?
Newly appointed chiefs
It should be noted that Buhari and his ruling
party, the All Progressives Congress (APC),
have consistently criticized the failure of the
army to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency
under the watch of the previous government.
During the electoral campaign former Head of
State had promised personally lead fight in the
battle with insecurity.
Since taking the office on May 29 Buhari
showed some level of commitment in dealing
with issues of security.
In his first decision as the commander-in-
chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces the
president ordered relocation of military
command centre to Maiduguri , the epicenter
of Boko Haram insurgency.
During the first 30 days in office President
Buhari was seeking international support for
stopping the deadly menace of the Islamist
militants. He visited Chad and Niger and
attended the G7 summit.
However, since Nigeria has changed its leader
Boko Haram had renewed attacks and no less
than 500 innocent people have been killed by
suicide bombers and gunmen in some states
in the Northern part of the country.
A former military officer, who asked not to be
named, who spoke on the matter said: “ The
only surprise about the appointment of the new
service chiefs is that it came later than
expected. We all know that General Buhari was
not happy with the way and manner the
terrorists have been killing and maiming the
people and what people were expecting was the
immediate sack of the service chiefs on the day
he was inaugurated, but that did not happen
until today (yesterday). Buhari may have been
biding his time in doing so.”
The most interesting fact is that the service
chiefs, too, had been pending the firing.
A personal assistant to one of them had said
three weeks ago that his boss was ready to
go but was waiting for Buhari to act.
He had said: “ My principal and other service
chiefs know that President Buhari will sack
them but they are only waiting for him to do so
in order to prevent a situation where they could
be accused of walking out on him. We all know
what he said about them during the campaign.
“He came and ordered them to relocate to
Borno State. Have you ever heard the military
top hierarchy relocating to the heart of the
battle? Maybe this man wanted to humiliate
them. Some of us are even thinking they would
submit their papers but we were told it is not
done that way.” Sources: Leadership, Naij.com news |
The mysterious death of two witnesses,
Ma’aji Mohammed Iro and Abdulmalik
Dalhatu, lined up to testify against the former
governor of Adamawa state Murtala Nyako,
has instilled fear in other prospective
witnesses.
According to the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission (EFCC), following the
death of Iro and Dalhatu whose lifeless bodies
were found shortly after they testified against
Nyako, other potential witnesses are scared
to testify against the former governor, who is
facing money laundering charge.
Late Iro was the then regional manager of
Zenith Bank Plc, Northeast Nigeria, and was in
charge of the accounts of Adamawa state
with the bank.
Iro was said to have presented convicting
evidence against Nyako who is answering to a
37-count criminal charge alongside his son,
Abdulaziz, a serving senator
Justice Evoh Chukwu had on Friday, July 10,
2015, granted the accused persons bail to the
tune of N350million each.
They were asked to produce two persons to
stand as their sureties or in the alternative,
provide one surety who must be a serving
Director in any federal government
establishment.
The surety according to the court must show
a proof of ownership of landed property in
Abuja, depose to an affidavit of means before
the deputy chief registrar of the High Court,
as well as, show evidence of three years tax
payment.
Besides, the accused persons were directed
to surrender their international passport to the
court alongside their two recent passport
photographs, even as the court
slated September 30 to commence their trial.
However, EFCC is kicking against their
release on bail.
The commission said: “Two of our crucial
witnesses, Ma’aji Mohammed Iro and
Abdulmalik Dalhatu have died in mysterious
circumstances and this has instilled fear in
other prospective witnesses in this case.
“Securing the arrest of the 1st (Nyako) and 2nd
(Abdulaziz) accused persons was very difficult
as they became fugitives upon becoming aware
of the ongoing investigation against them by the
commission.
“That the commission obtained a warrant of
arrest dated January 28, 2015, against the 1st
and 2nd accused persons. The said warrant of
arrest is marked as Exhibit RJ1.
“That the commission had to declare the 1st
and 2nd accused persons wanted in the
National Dailies and other media before they
could be found after several months."
Narrating what led to the arrest and trial of
the ex-governor, EFCC said: “That following a
petition received by the commission in October
2011 alleging gross abuse of office against the
1st accused and other criminal misappropriation
of moneys running into tens of billions of Naira
of the funds of Adamawa state government.
“The commission swung into action and carried
out discreet investigation into the said
allegations.
“That the investigations carried out by my ream
revealed the following: a) That the 1st and 2nd
accused are the owners of the 6th accused
Sebore Farms & Extension Limited, which they
operate by themselves.
“That several fictitious contracts running into
billions of Naira were awarded to the said 6th
accused while the 1st accused was governor of
Adamawa state.
“That on the instruction of the 1st accused
Ma’aji Mohammed Iro made several cash
lodgements running into billions of Naira into
the accounts of several companies and
individuals including the accounts of the 6th
and 9th (Crust Energy Limited) accused
persons, all from the accounts of Adamawa
state government for no specific reason.”
The commission told the court that the 3rd
accused, Zulkifikk Abba, who was a political
adviser to Nyako, is the owner of Alpharetta
Farms Limited, one of the companies through
which several billions of Naira belonging to
Adamawa state was allegedly stolen.
It said that the 4th accused, Abubakar Aliyu,
was a signatory to several accounts of one of
the indicted companies, Blue Opal Limited,
through which several monies running into
billions of Naira from the funds of Adamawa
state government were allegedly laundered to
develop Hill View Estate, Abuja.
The accused persons are alleged to have, at
various times between 2011 and 2013, used
five companies – Blue Opal Nigeria Limited,
Serore Farms & Extension Limited, Pagoda
Fortunes Limited, Towers Assets Management
Limited and Crust Energy Limited to commit
the fraud.

governor by the state House of Assembly on

The question of the right time to get married has been a hot topic in different groups and talk shows over the past few months. Find out below, 6 reasons you should get married before the age of 27. 1. Prevent sin: For those who believe in the concept of purity before marriage. Early marriage is one thing that can help you enjoy sex the way it was designed. 2. You can never really be ready: You will always want to make more money and be more comfortable and be a better person to ‘increase’ your options. But it’s even better when you can grow and become better with the person you love by your side, supporting you and propping you up during this journey. 3. You’ll never find the right companion: Many are in constant search for their ‘one true love’ and this tend to make them spend more years waiting, you’re probably not the right person for anyone. Just learn to improve on yourself. 4. Heartbreak: Many ladies decide not to try love again simply because a guy betrayed her. sweetheart just one word, “If he deserves you, he wont leave or break your heart”. Put together the pieces of your heart and move on. 5. Self confidence: As a lady, your self confidence automatically increases when you are married because you think in a more matured manner having at the back of your mind that you are a complete woman. 6. Fear of commitment: Commitment is willingness to give your time and energy to something that you believe in, or a promise or firm decision to do something. If you are still scared of commitment, its high time you snap out as someday you have to be committed to one thing or another. Society and some cultures have driven the concept of late marriage deep in the consciousness of everyone because of the alarming increase in divorce which has made marriage a feat for only those with courage. Ex-militant leaders from the nine states of
the Niger Delta region have written a letter to
President Muhammadu Buhari, alerting him of
issues in the region, particularly the amnesty
deal.
In the letter sent to the president on July 9,
Thursday, copies of which were made
available to newsmen in Yenagoa, the ex-
militant leaders alerted the president to the
growing suffering and disgraceful plight of
Amnesty beneficiaries in Europe, America and
South Africa, Leadership reports.
The concerned leaders led by one of the
frontline ex-militia leaders in Bayelsa state,
Pastor Reuben Wilson, popularly known along
the Creeks and waterways as General Pastor,
said, the alert sent to the president was to
draw his attention on the urgent need to
address the issues in the region within the
Presidential Amnesty office.
They alleged that some aggrieved youths are
threatening the existing peace accord over
the delay by the federal government in the
payment of allowances and tuition fees to
beneficiaries of the Amnesty deal within and
outside the country.
“ The worst part of their situation is the
unpredictability of when their nightmare will end
while hunger and deprivation has put them in a
very bad state of mind.
“Your Excellency, you will recall that this
programme had within the last few years
brought relative stability to our region and by
extension this country.
“This we owe to the late President Yar’Adua
who in his wisdom proclaimed Amnesty for ex-
agitators and drew a plan of action towards
ensuring lasting peace in the region through
various training programmes ,” the letter read.
According to the ex-militant leaders, series of
complaints and prayers have been sent to
President Buhari on the matter but no
response and reports show that the delay in
the payment is throwing up security issues
and dangerous disenchantment among the ex-
militant youths.
The Amnesty programme was started by the
late President Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
This led to the creation of the Presidential
Amnesty Office (PAO) based within the Aso
Rock Presidential Villa. This initiative came
against the background of tenuous security
conditions and instability which characterized
the region. The various militant groups had
intensively engaged in series of kidnapping
and abduction of prominent citizens of the
region, government officials and workers in
the oil and gas sector.
Report had surfaced in 2013 that the federal
government was planning to terminate the
amnesty programme by 2015.
An ex-militant leader Ramsey
Oyakemeagbegha had earlier called on the
federal government to sustain the amnesty
programme beyond 2015, stressing that it
would enable government address the
challenges and neglects that necessitated the
amnesty. Sources: Leadership, Naij.com news |
Buhari Turn Down NSA's Resignation
Letter Resignation letter of the National Security Adviser, Colonel Sabo Dasuki, has been rejected by President Muhammadu Buhari, gongnews has reported. The report said Dasuki’s resignation was reject on the account that he must account for funds received and spent under his tenure in the prosecution of the book haram insurgency. Col. Sambo Dasuki, National Security Adviser President Buhari was reported to have said Dasuki’s resignation is‘unacceptable’ ” following intelligence reports showing the fake military hardware, consumables and large cache of money unaccounted for due to improper filing of contract papers under the office of the NSA ” the paper reported. Government sources was also that the unaccounted funds poses a “significant financial risk and demonstrates a lack of internal control over the NSA’s office which diminished the roles and powers of the Ministry of defence and more than $50 billion in which contract files were incomplete or could not be located at all which he has to account for before leaving government.” Sabo has come under increasing pressure over his leadership of the NSA’s office and how it was heavily politicized before and after the political transition process. The Presidency is also concerned about some deals coming out of the NSA’s office, especially the issue of $9.3m South African arms deal and repeated reports that Nigeria was conned into a failed Boko Haram “ceasefire” deal to the tune of almost $500m The NSA and the service chiefs was said to have forced INEC to postpone the February 14 general elections. Nobel Peace laureate, Malala Yousafzai, said if just eight days of fund spent by world leader in purchasing military hardware could be diverted to education, it could ensure 12 years of free primary and secondary education to every child in the world. The 17-year-old Pakistani education activist made this remark while addressing delegates from 40 countries at an education summit in the Norwegian capital Oslo. “ Books are better investment in our future than bullets. The sum of 39 billion dollars each year may appear a huge number, but the reality is that it is not. “The issue is not that there is not enough money, the issue is the lack of commitment from the world leaders to invest in education, ’’ Malala said.Malala was shot in the head by Taliban militants three years ago because of her campaign for the right of girls to education. At the conference, Norwegian Prime Minister, Erna Solberg, announced that Chile, Indonesia, Malawi and Norway along with the head of the UN agency UNESCO launched an international commission on improving funding for education. “Funding has dropped since 2010. Key areas included ensuring the education of girls, the quality of learning and teaching, and education in emergencies,’’ Solberg said. UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, approved the commission at the same conference, noting that 2 per cent of humanitarian aid should go to education in crisis areas. The commission’s recommendations are expected to be presented in 2016. The commission is headed by Former British prime minister and now UN special envoy on global education .Brown said about 59 million children worldwide are still out of primary school, while another 65 million do not get secondary education, while 500 million girls will not finish school. Universal primary education is one of the UN millennium development goals (MDGs) adopted in 2000. The teenager, who spoke with a BBC reporter, narrated how she was raped repeatedly after being forced to marry the fighter. File Photo of some escaped Chibok girls According to This Day, the young lady was held in captivity by Boko Haram for six months last year, and got pregnant for one of the insurgents whom she later referred to as her husband. Miriam explained further, how her community had rejected her since she came out of captivity because she was pregnant. “I really hope it is a girl. I would love her more than any boy. A boy would always be known as the son of Boko Haram,” she said. Boko Haram had attacked her village and taken her captive to a house where she was kept in a small room with about 40 other women. Mariam stated in her story, that she initially resisted any marriage, but eventually agreed after four men were brought out in front of her and had their throats slit. “This will happen to any girl who refuses to marry,” she added. On how she eventually escaped, the heavily pregnant teenager said it was her second attempt at trying to flee before recording success. The man she had been forced to marry reportedly left her alone, and she seized her moment. She ran and ran and ran, and she did not look back until she was home. “I took something before I left,” she said, and brought out a SIM card belonging to her husband. “My husband,” Miriam added, “If he ever sees me again, he will kill me. The men in my family are dead. I am just alone with my mum. “God will avenge me. There’s nothing more I can say.” Recall that the Italian government rescued some of the kidnapped girls, who was reportedly travelling by sea outside the country Sources: BBC News , Naij.com news , ThisDay |
A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Board of Trustees, Alhaji Gambo Magaji, has commented on speculation surrounding the internal strife between the party leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and President Muhammadu Buhari. In an interview with Vanguard, Magaji stated that there was nothing wrong with the leaders of the party, especially in the wake of Tinubu’s absence at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the party with the Nigerian president last week. Buhari, Tinubu Not At War, APC BoT Member President Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu… are they really not at war? He explained that despite the seeming breach of the party’s position regarding the National Assembly elections, it had decided to accept the leaders that emerged from the controversial election in order for peace to reign. The BoT member said that the party took the decision in the hope that the Senate president, Bukola Saraki, and the House of Representatives speaker, Yakubu Dogara, would reciprocate the gesture and abide by the position of the party that brought them to power. Magaji told Vanguard in an exclusive interview in Abuja, yesterday, that both men had since been acknowledged and accepted by the party and that they were expected to toe the party’s line as a mark of respect and recognition of the party. He said: “To the best of my knowledge, there is no quarrel between Buhari and Tinubu. “The fact that the former governor did not come for NEC should not be taken to mean that he has a quarrel with the President or the party. “The party’s NEC is not like the BoT and anyone who is not a member can decide whether or not to attend.” On the existing disagreement over the emergence of the National Assembly leadership, Magaji affirmed that both Senator Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara, the Senate president and speaker of the House of Representatives respectively, have been pardoned for their supposed misdeeds. He therefore averred that the party hopes the two warring members should obey the party’s wishes. According to him: “it is our belief that since the party did not question the emergence of Saraki and Dogara by formally writing to them as Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives, they should understand that they have been accepted by party. “What is expected from them is that they would also show respect to the party and begin to toe its line so as not to give the impression that they are working against the party that brought them to power. “The position of the party is that the leadership of NASS should do what the party wants and nothing more, if they are loyal members of APC. That is the minimum expectation.” President Buhari has also said that the party is supreme and that members of the APC should respect the wishes of the party ahead of personal ambitions. Ita Ekpenyong was appointed the Director General of the State Security Service on September 8, 2010 and sacked yesterday. The SSS has been involved in numerous dirty affairs and experienced several colossal failures under his command – here are the worst five of them. DSS operatives have been involved in numerous dirty political games under Ita Ekpenyong On July 21, 2014, SSS operatives apprehended the head of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign and ex-minister of education, Oby Ezekwesili, at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja. She was about to fly to London to make a report concerning the on-going hostage crisis of abducted and since missing Chibok girls. Oby Ezekwesili has been opposing against the weak strategy of then-President Goodluck Jonathan in rescuing the Chibok girls. The SSS representatives later denied apprehending the BBOG campaigner , but Ezekwesili told they did the apprehension deliberately, “ acting on orders from above” to make her miss the flight to London, and narrated her ordeal with the SSS operatives in details. Seven months ago the Australian negotiator, Stephen Davis, who unsuccessfully tried to free Chibok girls, has issued a statement, accusing the State Security Service of working together with Ali Modu Sheriff, one of the alleged Boko Haram sponsors. In his statement Davis accused the SSS of arresting the alleged framers of the Ali Modu sheriff and are now backing the ex governor and doing his billings. Davis wrote: “ the SSS has arrested people who have been supporting girls who have been kidnapped, raped and abused but managed to escape from Boko Haram camps and is interrogating these young men in order to intimidate the general population and ensure Sheriff is free to continue his sponsorship of Boko Haram. ” The SSS, in turn, accused Stephen Davis of blackmailing the Borno state ex-Governor Ali Modu Sheriff and several other Nigerian top officials, whom Davis described in his statements as sponsors of the Boko Haram sect. However, the SSS officials failed to provide any evidence to their own accusations as well as Ali Modu Sheriff failed to sue Davis in court despite Davis himself dared Sheriff to sue him to prove whose allegations are true in the courtroom. Ahead of recent elections in Nigeria the SSS spokesperson Marilyn Ogar has made at least three highly controversial and politically biased statements unconfirmed by facts. Marilyn Ogar linked some unspecified members of the APC to Boko Haram without showing any evidence. In an effort to discredit the APC’s victory in the Osun state governorship election, Ogar alleged that the party had tried to bribe her with 14 million naira. She also made claims that #BringBackOurGirls is a campaign affiliated to terrorists. The jailbreak of several Boko Haram detainees on March 30, 2014, can be considered one of the major flops in the history of the SSS. The inmates managed to disarm guards in the most closely guarded State Security Services facility in Abuja near the presidential villa. The incident caused panic in Abuja, resulting in the four-hour gunfight in which all twenty one Boko Haram suspects were shot dead. Two SSS operatives were also critically wounded. A 32-year-old man Yusuf Siyaka aka Ciaxon who tweeted live photos of attempted jailbreak at the SSS headquarters on March 30, was later illegally detained for 12 days by the SSS officers, claiming he was paid to tweet the sensational images. He was released later uncharged. On November 21, 2014, Lagos data centre of the All Progressives Congress was invaded by operatives of the Department of State Service and soldiers without the search warrant. 25 data agents and three security guards were arrested. The security officials insisted that the service received a petition that the building was being used to clone INEC voter card, which forced them to check the information. The APC strongly denied the accusations, demanding apologies from the SSS. However, on December 2, 2014, the security officers raided the APC office once again, breaking the court order, forbidding the operatives to seal off the data centre. President Muhammadu Buhari has replaced the Director General (DG) of the Department of Security Services (DSS), Ita Ekpenyong yesterday. The President appointed Lawal Daura as the new DG of the DSS.
