Boko Haram Islamists killed 10 people, including two soldiers, and torched several homes during a raid in northern Cameroon, security sources said Thursday. Wednesday’s attack in the town of Blame, near the Nigerian border, led to the deaths “of two soldiers from BIR (an elite army unit) and eight civilians,” a security source said. A BIR officer also confirmed the toll. The Islamists also burnt several houses in the town, which lies near Lake Chad, before retreating to Nigeria, the security source said. A Cameroonian soldier was killed and two others wounded Tuesday in another Boko Haram attack in the north of the country. Nigeria’s neighbours Chad, Cameroon and Niger, which have all suffered attacks by Boko Haram, launched a regional force earlier this year to end a conflict that has claimed more than 15,000 lives since 2009. Many of the insurgents are hiding out in Lake Chad, a shallow, marshy water body dotted with hundreds of islets, and in Nigeria’s Sambisa Forest near the border with Cameroon. www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/08/boko-haram-kill-10-in-cameroon-raid-security-sources/#

RIVERS State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, dismissed the claims that his administration was attacking the immediate past governor of the state, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, in order to deprive him (Amaechi) of a ministerial appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari. Wike explained that rather than worry about the possible appointment of Amaechi into President Buhari’s cabinet, he was interested in how the state’s funds were managed under the former governor. He pointed out that a situation where nothing was left in the state’s treasury on his assumption of office as governor was annoying, worrisome and unacceptable. Wike, who spoke through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Opunabo Inko-Taria, told newsmen in Port Harcourt that it was illogical for anybody to claim that his complaint about corruption in the immediate past administration had any link with Amaechi likelihood of getting a federal appointment. “So, what is he (Ameachi) going to do to him (Wike) as a minister or Federal Government appointee? Wike has not told anybody that he does not want President Buhari to appoint Amaechi as a minister. He has never said it; these are just insinuations and innuendos. “If Mr. President, known for his mantra of zero tolerance for corruption; is saying that he is not going to appoint anybody with a stained image as a member of his cabinet and Rivers people are saying that Rotimi Amaechi is not qualified for an appointment, there is no problem with that. “But the truth is that paint Amaechi black, if he (Buhari) does not want to appoint him (Amaechi), he will not. Paint Amaechi white, if the President is not interested in him, he will not appoint him. “The talk about whether Amaechi should be appointed into Buhari’s cabinet is just the feeling from Rivers’ people and not the governor himself. He has never discussed the issue of whether Amaechi should be appointed by Mr. President or not. “The governor is more interested in how the funds of Rivers State were spent; whether they were judiciously spent or they were just frittered away. That is the interest because it is annoying that when we took over, we met an empty treasury,” Wike said. He expressed worry that those responsible for emptying the state’s treasury were the same people accusing him of taking N30bn loan within a month. He said, “They forgot that you are supposed to pay salaries; you are supposed to open the judiciary. The governor gave the judiciary N300m for takeoff and he also had to pay some of the students abroad who were owed allowances. Civil servants, pensioners and footballers, who were owed salaries, were paid.” www.punchng.com/news/i-dont-care-if-amaechi-emerges-minister-wike/ |
DELTA State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, has called for a full implementation of the universal healthcare system as encapsulated in the National Health Act 2014. Okowa, who spoke at the 10th Annual All Fellows Congress and Scientific Conference of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, said “an important step in this reorientation process will be a robust health insurance scheme that gives access to affordable and quality health services, backed by an effective legislation.” According to him, “the universal healthcare is a coverage that is funded by the government and provides healthcare for citizens.” He noted that “the right to health” supersedes other rights. He stressed that “providing affordable, quality and accessible healthcare should be a foremost cardinal policy and programme of any government because national developmental aspirations cannot succeed or be sustained unless adequate attention is paid to the population’s health status.” Therefore, the “National Health Act remains Nigeria’s best option at achieving quality and accessible healthcare for its citizens. The National Health Act 2014 provides, for the first time, an all-encompassing legal framework for the delivery of affordable and quality healthcare in Nigeria. “In synergy with an efficient health financing system, they ensure that quality health service becomes affordable and accessible, with citizens becoming the ultimate beneficiaries.” The governor stressed the need for a clear national strategy that defines the comprehensive vision of a healthcare system that creates value for both the patient and the healthcare provider, and the processes required to achieve it. He disclosed that the Executive Bill on Delta State Contributory Health Commission has been forwarded to the House of Assembly, with effort to ensure it is passed into law this year. When passed into law, Okowa said, the bill would increase the demand for health services in the state, so he solicited the partnership of the college in attaining of this goal. www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/08/okowa-seeks-implementation-of-healthcare-act/#

The Senate President Bukola Saraki has said that the Senate has nothing to hide. The senate president made this statement while receiving the leadership of the All Progressive Congress Youth Forum (APYF) in his office as part of the celebration of this year’s International Youth Day. According to him, the 8th Senate is committed to openness as he plans to introduce the e-parliament system. it was gathered that the e- parliament being planned by the Senate is meant to give voice to Nigerians who will want to contribute to discussions on issues concerning the upper chamber of the legislature. Saraki said: “I want to assure you, despite all what you read in the papers, be rest assured that we are here for serious business. We are all committed to make a difference and my doors are open. Very soon, from what I am being told from the Senate Committee on Rules and Business, we are trying to move fast about the e-parliament so that everybody here can know what we are doing and they can also contribute to some of the discussions. “We want to make this place as open as possible. There is nothing here we are hiding. What is our great motivation? Nigerians spoke at the last elections and I don’t think they spoke for things to be the same and we must not let it be the same. We must ensure that it is positively different. “For example, the issue of rebuilding the Northeast. We believe there are no schools. There are no hospitals. There are no homes. That cannot come from normal budgetary allocation or appropriations. As a country, we must make a special case for the rebuilding of the Northeast and again, that is going to come from the support of the National Assembly and that is an area of focus for us.” Meanwhile, the Senate has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to carry out a vigorous campaign of the Bank Verification exercises in rural areas. www.naij.com/516981-saraki-introduce-e-parliament-system-nigeria-read.html |
Just ahead of the presidential election, the former president of the country, Oluesegun Obasanjo, announces his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party. Moreover, Chief OBJ orders his aide to tear intro pieces his membership card. There were first insinuations that the prominent Nigerian, whose opinion matters a lot for the country citizens, might change his political affiliations. However, Obasanjo stated clearly that he was not going to join any other political party, but remain “a statesman both internally and externally”. He vowed to assist anyone who is in need of his advice. He reinstated his position on August 10 while speaking from his Abeokuta residence. Interestingly, however, after the elections Chief Obasanjo seems to have been too actively involved in Nigeria’s political life for a partyless man. Mr Obasanjo has been in the headlines recently almost as often as President Muhammadu Buhari. Let us recall some of the latest occasions and news. 1. August 7 Chief Obasanjo held a closed-door meeting with President Buhari. Details were not made public, but sources disclosed that it had been connected with the earlier visit by Turai Yar’Adua to OBJ when she allegedly complained to the elder statesman about having problems with “Buhari people”. 2. August 3 report Obasanjo insisted that the immediate past coordinating minister of the economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had changed under the regime of Goodluck Jonathan. “But take Ngozi (Okonjo-Iweala), who worked for me. And who worked competently for me. Because I know Ngozi’s weaknesses, but I know her strong points. Her strong point is technical competence. But Ngozi needs to be led and to be supervised. Now will you comment on Ngozi who worked for me as the same Ngozi who worked for Jonathan? Will you?” 3. August 4 The former president outlined the major problems he faced during his term in office. He said that bunkering and vandalism were the “most challenging problems” and he therefore insured the institutionalisation of the NSCDC through an act of Parliament to deal with the issue. 4. July 27 Obasanjo met with the new Ogun police commissioner, following which he urged Nigerians to fully assist the country police to allow its staff to effectively fulfill their duties. 5. July 21 The ex PDP member alleged during the interview on Channels TV that Goodluck Jonathan paid some people to attack him over his controversial autobiography “My Watch”. It should be noted that the book contains quite a number of unfavourable comments about GEJ and the weaknesses of his administration. These are just some of the reports about Obasanjo speaking up on various topics, sharing his thoughts and meeting with country seniors… The recent development can be indicative of the following: 1. Obasanjo has passed a vote of confidence to President Muhammadu Buhari and is open to provide full assistance to the new government. Considering the escalating conflict between Obasanjo and Jonathan, it was not possible for the two politicians to cooperate, even though they belonged to one and the same party. 2. OBJ is simply fulfilling his duties as a Nigerian who vowed to remain helpful and open for those who need his advice. The case might be not about Buhari and his way of change, but about the political change in general. www.naij.com/514529-obasanjo-although-partyless-still-active.html |
On Tuesday, August 11, 2015, the Nigerian
currency dropped against the US dollar at the
parallel market.
Traders says that the drop was driven by
demand mainly from individuals travelling
abroad for summer holidays and importers.
According to Reuters, the naira was quoted at
224 to the greenback at the black market.
At the official interbank market, the
dollar costs 197 since February.
Harrison Owoh, an operator of Nigerian
Bureaux de Change (BDC), said: “We’ve seen a
surge in dollar demand since Friday.”
He stated that the bank sold around $160m to
BDC’s last week to increase dollar supply.
The source notes that BDCs are allowed to
sell up to $4,000 as personal travelling
allowance and $5,000 as business travelling
allowance.
Last week the naira was appreciated to 216
at the parallel market after banks had started
denying their customers opportunity to make
cash deposits of dollar, pound and euro into
their domiciliary accounts. www.naij.com/515575-naira-drops-224-dollar.html |

Popular car manufacturers, Ford Motor
Company has indicated its interest in
assembling the Ford Ranger pickup truck in
Nigeria.
The proposed assembling plant is in
partnership with its dealer in sub-Saharan
Africa, Coscharis Motors Limited, owned by
Nigerian billionaire, Cosmas Maduka.
The project will commence by the fourth
quarter of this year, as the company seeks to
expand in Africa and the Middle East,
Indiantimes.com reports.
Jeff Nemeth, the president and CEO of Ford
Motor Company’s business in sub-Saharan
Africa, told Reuters, “Nigeria is a priority
market for us in sub-Saharan Africa. Depending
on how Nigeria develops over time … we are
potentially looking at using our Nigerian plant to
service West Africa,” he told Reuters.
“The auto market in Africa’s biggest economy
has huge potential but retails only a small
amount of new vehicles annually”, Nemeth
added.
He pointed out that the sector is dominated
by imported used vehicles, while limited
financing for consumers to buy new vehicles
and the absence of an industrial policy that
would encourage suppliers to set up in Nigeria
remains a major challenge.
Ford produces 85,000 units each year in South
Africa, which are sold across 24 African
countries.
“It would take between 1 to 2 months to take an
order, build it and deliver it within the country. If
you order from overseas it would take between
4 to 6 months,” Nemeth said.
Car makers like KIA, Nissan and Volkswagen
had also indicated interest in opening
assembling plants in Nigeria too in the past. www.naij.com/515543-ford-indicates-interest-assembling-cars-nigeria.html |

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that people, who had frantically involved in fault finding with the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, were those had skeletons in their cupboards. The party in a statement via Lai Mohammed, its spokesperson, has said the disruptions being scored by certain elements in the polity will not discourage Buhari from its affirmed determination to save Nigeria from the clutches of those who are holding the country by the jugular. The statement reads in part: “These paranoid and skittish people daily run to the media to disparage the Buhari administration. Grasping at their straws, they condemn and criticize everything from appointments to the war against corruption and the battle against insecurity, even though the party to which they belong had 16 years to make things right for Nigeria but chose to suck the country dry, enthrone insecurity and pauperize the citizenry. “Their design is simple: Make enough incoherent noise in the media with the hope that the administration will be distracted. Unfortunately for them, they have failed in their evil machination, because this president can neither be deterred nor be distracted. While their dogs continue to bark, the caravan of the Buhari administration proceeds on its steadfast journey.” The ruling party questioned how the APC-led administration can be accused of the blatant denial of the last government to sufficiently equip the army to confront the Boko Haram terrorists, when even an appointee of the administration told the whole world that he was the head of a military that lacked the relevant equipment and motivation to fight an insurgency. “What achievement is there for anyone to appropriate from an administration that will go down in history as the most rapacious, incompetent and clueless in the history of our nation?” it questioned. According to the APC the Buhari government in less than three months has commenced a strong footing in many areas, including the fight against insurgency, the battle against corruption, the reform of the oil sector that was the private piggy bank of the last government, the overdue clean-up of the Niger Delta region, which was outrageously neglected by a Jonathan who was from that region. “With its sure-footed efforts in all the listed areas already attracting national and international acclaim, does it not beggar belief that the same Buhari Administration will be accused by the apologists of the failed regime of appropriating their dubious achievements?” the APC said. The war of words between two main political parties seem not have slowed down. The opposition Peoples Democratic Congress has recently blasted Buhari, saying that the incumbent leader of the nation has stolen the achievements of his predecessor. www.naij.com/514247-pdp-dogs-continue-bark-caravan-pmb-administration-proceeds.html |
Donald Duke, the former Cross River state
governor, has disclosed some of the intrigues
that led to the appearance of Alhaji Shehu
Musa Yar’Adua as the PDP presidential flag
bearer and how he came to be replaced by
ex-president Goodluck Jonathan as
Yar’Adua’s running mate.
The former governor discussed this in the first
edition of a magazine, The Interview,
published by the former group managing
director of Leadership Newspapers.
Duke recounted how Yar’Adua never sought to
be president and that the late president had
contacted him on three occasions seeking his
agreement to be his running mate.
He said: “ You don’t give authority to an
unwilling person, particularly in a country like
Nigeria. Umaru never wanted to be president.
He was dealing with his health issues and
wanted to retire and go lecture in a university.
He was really offered an appointment at the
Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria. Jonathan, on
the other hand, had just been re-elected to be
governor of Bayelsa and when he was picked,
he was not so pleased. He said to Obasanjo
and me, ‘I don’t want this job.’
“If these two men never aspired to the office
but were recruited to take on a responsibility as
daunting as the management of Nigeria without
mentally preparing for the office and having a
grand vision of where they wanted to take
Nigeria to, then there is a problem. The mental
preparation is absolutely important. The vision
can be scripted for you, but if you are not
prepared and you have no capable team to help
you follow through, it is grossly unfair. It is like
converting a passenger on an aircraft to a
pilot.”
Duke clarified that the serious mistake of
saddling men who were unprepared with the
duty of running the country is what has
brought the country to its present state.
After the 2007 resolution that made the late
Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan the PDP
aspirants for president and vice president,
Duke was cited as saying that Nigeria would
regret the decision.
Duke explained the remark by saying: “ It is
one prophecy I wish never came to pass. Some
people regretted it while others came out
looking really good”.
“I put myself forward for the presidency in
2007. Umaru Yar’Adua approached me thrice to
run along with him and thrice I agreed. The
third time, he came with Ibrahim Shema, who
later became governor of Katsina State, asking
me again. I was exasperated and I said, ‘Look,
Umaru, we have agreed on this, but it is still
your decision to make.’ He said, ‘Gladly, I would
think so, but I would discuss with President
Obasanjo.’ I said, ‘Very well, do that and let me
know.’ That was the last I heard of it. Then, I
got word from party operatives that we should
go into a party convention with one candidate
for unity of purpose. At that point, it was
inconceivable that I would win the primaries; I
would only spend money and still lose. I backed
out. The rest is history. There is a story making
the rounds that I rejected it.”
“ I never did. Umaru is not alive today, but I did
not. Later on, Obasanjo said to me that he
thought I had a personality that was so strong
and would be in conflict with Umaru who
appeared so weak. I said it was all spilt milk.
Umaru could appear weak, but he was not,
which we now know. Secondly, he said he
didn’t want a repeat of the conflict he had with
Abubakar Atiku, his vice president at the time.”
Yar’Adua was the president of Nigeria and the
13th head of state. He was announced the
winner of the controversial Nigerian
presidential poll held on 21 April 2007, and
was sworn in on 29 May 2007. www.naij.com/514149-man-might-become-president-instead-late-yaradua-opens.html |

The commander-general of the National School Crime Preventing Corps (NSCPC), Ige Folarin of the Nigeria Legion has described cultism in secondary schools as a tragedy that should be eradicated quickly. No to cultism Folarin disclosed this on Monday August 9 at a 3-day National Stakeholders summit on Menace of Social Vices in Schools , held at the NSCPC headquarters, Abeokuta, Ogun state. Folarin explained that the summit was meant to provide means to eradicate and prevent crime in secondary schools, saying that the issue of cultism was moving deep into secondary schools and should be checked. According to him, “We need to tell the youths about the genesis of cultism, we need to let stakeholders know that the issue of cultism is moving deep into secondary schools. “A cult member could be defined as someone who uses gun, cutlass, sharp objects and charms for criminal acts and these are the same things robbers robbers use. “We are letting people know in the exposition that cultism is now in secondary schools, we should all rise as stakeholders to prevent this act so that the society will be a better place,” Ige suggested. Also speaking at the summit, consultant to the Ogun state government on Parking Management Scheme, Wale Yussuf, submitted that the issue of cultism, social vices, immoral attitudes in schools had become worrisome. “It boils to the fact that some parents are not showing enough concern and attention to their children and also some children are also not showing great concern in their studies. “And again we believe this bad act is predominant in higher institutions. It is high time we lecture, enlighten primary and secondary school students on the best way to live their lives without engaging in any bad attitude like drugs, cultism and other vices,” he said. www.naij.com/513843-need-stop-cultism-schools-nscpc-boss.html

Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria’s former president, outlined the major problems which he faced during his eight-year tenure in office. Obasanjo spoke about his years of presidency on Tuesday, August 4, at his residence in Abeokuta, Ogun state, as he received Ade Abolurin (rtd), the former corp commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC). According to Vanguard, he said that bunkering and vandalism were the “most challenging problems” and he therefore insured the institutionalisation of the NSCDC through an act of Parliament to deal with the issue. “Some of the things that I had to confront during my tenure as President of Nigeria were pipeline vandalism, holdup, and stealing of crude oil. “That stealing is what they call bunkering; there is nothing like bunkering, it is outright stealing. We used all the available agencies and resources; and your organisation as a voluntary organisation, unpaid, unremunerated, unrecognised and not institutionalised, was doing great job without being armed and without being equipped. “That meant the height of commitment, nationalism, patriotism and service to fatherland and service to humanity. Of course, I didn’t hesitate to move ahead for an act of Parliament to be able to organise you into what you are today.” He further lamented over the “lack of continuity” in Nigeria expressing hope, however, that this will not be the problem in the NSCDC. “I hope in your own case and this organisation, there would be continuity; continuity not for the man coming after you to do everything exactly like you have done it. “It is not possible even if the person coming after you is your biological son, he wouldn’t do everything the way you would want to do it. As I am talking to you, I am also talking to your successor and I believe that where you have taken this organisation to, those coming after you will be able to build over it.” Chief Obasanjo has recently spoke out on the issue of bad journalism when he received the former secretary of the Nigerian Union of Journalists on his 53rd birthday. OBJ, the author of My Watch autobiography, criticized non-professionals working in the sphere of media calling them “bad eggs” who should not be allowed to cover the country news. www.naij.com/507974-challenges-faced-presidency-obasanjo.html

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, August 4, gave instructions to the newly- appointed managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) , while an insider source made breaking disclosures. It should be recalled that Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu was yesterday announced as the new NNPC boss in an attempt to restore the reputation of the body the tops of which are often accused of being involved in corruption schemes. According to The Nation, Buhari urged Kachikwu to first focus on the recovery of the stolen oil funds. A source disclosed that Kachikwu might also be appointed the Minister of State for Petroleum Sources. The other candidates for the position reportedly include the former executive secretary of the Petroleum Products Prices Regulatory Agency, Stanley Reginald; the managing director of the Shell Petroleum Development, Osagie Okunbor, and the NNPC deputy general manager (name not provided). Chargin Kachikwu on his new duties, President Buhari gave him six terms of reference to reshape the corporation: 1. To clean up the organization of corrupt officials; 2. To recover stolen oil money; 3. To work in cooperation with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Directorate of State Service to ensure the successful fulfillment of point 2; 4. To review the NNPC structure for the body competitive on a global scale; 5. To set goals for all subsidiaries; and 6. To fix the all the national refineries for them to work to maximum effect. The source also narrated how the new NNPC had been chosen: “The new GMD of NNPC was picked after a thorough search by the President. Actually, at the end of the search, the choice was narrowed down to four candidates. “The President opted for Kachikwu who is the Vice President of Exxon Mobil, not only in Nigeria but in Africa. Buhari was impressed by his impeccable credentials as the most senior black African in any multi-national oil firm in the world with 30 years experience. “Apart from being a First Class graduate, Kachikwu also obtained PhD in Law which enabled him to rise to company secretary in Exxon Mobil… “In their negotiation, President Buhari repeatedly said: ‘I won’t interfere with your work; I will give you a free hand because I want to reform this oil sector once and for all.’ The GMD accepted the job following what he realized as ‘the infectious patriotism and genuine intention of the President’.” President Buhari has been focusing on the two major challenges after the assumption of office: security and corruption. During the election campaign, the APC candidate vowed to eliminate insurgency and deal with public funds embezzlement, which was believed to be flourishing under the immediate past administration. The work is ongoing in both directions. As for the first objective, the country head has made many new appointments in the army leadership, has negotiated with the international leaders on the support and cooperation in the fight against terrorism. As far as the anti-corruption battle is concerned, Buhari has noted that his government took steps to identify the banks and countries where the stolen oil money was held. The president also considers dividing the NNPC. www.naij.com/507949-buahri-sets-6-objectives-new-nnpc-boss-source-makes-breaking-disclosure.html

An anonymous source in local government said: “Residents said the attackers headed back to Nigeria where Cameroon is not allowed to pursue them”. One of the senior military officers disclosed that the attackers had crossed over from Nigeria shortly after midnight. It is important to note that for struggle against Boko Haram Cameroon has already deployed about 7,000 troops as part of a regional force which includes Chad, Niger and Nigeria. www.naij.com/507941-breaking-boko-haram-kidnaps-100-kills-8-cameroon.html |
These are troubling times for Nigeria’s immediate past National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) as a large scale investigation into the financial dealings during his time as NSA has commenced. The residence of Dasuki in the Asokoro district of Abuja was under siege by operatives of the DSS last two week for almost 48 hours. Reports claimed huge sums of cash in Nigerian and foreign currency were found when his residence in Abuja and Sokoto were ransacked by DSS operatives A highly placed government official, who declined being identified, told The Cable that sensitive documents, including cheques and bank transactions, were seized in Dasuki’s houses. However, the DSS, is yet to reveal its findings its findings in Dasuki’s houses as the security agency only said it found “incriminating evidence” against Sambo while searching his properties. There were also allegations of “treasonable felony” against the Sokoto-born prince, even as Dasuki was quick to rebuff the claims of the DSS, claiming his travails were politically motivated. Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, had aslo described Dasuki’s arrest as a sign of dictatorship. The security operatives reportedly took with them $40,000, three automatic rifles and Dasuki’s travel documents before they vacated his residence. The source did not give a breakdown of the cash reportedly recovered but said the biggest find so far is in the paper trail “which is yielding significant leads”. Recall that after ending the siege at Dasuki’s residence, some operatives of the DSS moved to his friend’s home, Bello Fadipe. The Peoples Democratic Party had also criticised the invasion and occupation of Dasuki’s residence accusing President Muhammadu Buhari of threatening aides of former president Goodluck Jonathan. www.naij.com/507622-dss-probes-dasuki-alleged-mismanaged-n40bn-security-fund.html |
Wife of the President of the Senate, Mrs. Toyin Saraki has called on mothers to exclusively breastfeed their babies especially during the first six months of a child’s life to guarantee a healthier lifespan. According to a press statement made available to Naij.com, Mrs Saraki stated this while addressing nursing mothers and stakeholders in the health sector during this year’s World Breastfeeding Week celebration in Abuja, Mrs. Saraki stated that breastfeeding is a bridge between maternal health and child health. She stressed that it is high time our nursing mothers renew their willingness to optimally breastfeed their infants and adopt inclusive nutritional feeding practices for children. “I urge our mothers to imbibe the habit of exclusive breastfeeding for our newborns. It is very important to put the baby to your breast within the first 30 minutes after birth to stimulate milk production. “Exclusive breastfeeding means giving breastmilk only, and nothing else, no foods, or liquids, not even sips of water, except for medicines prescribed by a doctor or nurse. “Mixing breastmilk with other milks, foods and liquids before six months is not healthy for your baby. It reduces the amount of milk that you produce and can make your baby sick” Mrs. Saraki advised. She further encouraged mothers in Nigeria to ensure their babies are delivered in a government certified health facility, and safe childbirth by a skilled midwife with access to appropriate medical referral. Experts from various health institutions and international organizations, such as the World Health Organization, Federal Ministry of Health, Wellbeing Foundation Africa, Family Health Department, who spoke in different fora on this year’s theme, “Breastfeeding and Work: let’s make it work” solicited for support from all stakeholders to encourage breastfeeding mothers working in both formal and informal places and communities to continue optimal exclusive breastfeeding practices even during work hours. Recently, Mrs Saraki degrading treatment melted on patients, especially pregnant women during anti-natal and post-natal care by medical practitioners in the country. www.naij.com/507745-sarakis-wife-advocates-exclusive-breastfeeding-infants.html
