Used to Think “Bianca” and “Biafra” Were Igbo Words!
By Farooq Kperogi

Twitter: @farooqkperogi

Don’t laugh too hard at my ignorance, but until fairly recently, I used to think Bianca was an Igbo name and thought any non-Igbo person who bore the name did so out of (benign) appellative appropriation—such as many Black Americans who bear African names.

Don’t blame me: the first person I ever knew to bear the name was Bianca Onuh Ojukwu, the former beauty queen who became former Biafra warlord Emeka Ojukwu’s wife. Through the logic of false attraction, I thought the “bia” in Bianca was derived from the Igbo “bia” that means “come.”

This notion was congealed in my mind because “bia” is probably Igbo language’s single most recognized word to other non-Igbo Nigerians. “Bia” is lexically frozen in my imagination in the trinitarian alternative indigenous name for Nigeria called WAZOBIA, which is formed from the Yoruba “wa,” the Hausa “zo” and the Igbo “bia,” which all mean “come” in English.

In addition, Biafra, the name Igbo people chose for their homeland when they seceded from Nigeria and which new secessionists still cherish and embrace, begins with “bia.” In fact, an Igbo friend and classmate of mine in high school by the name of John Chukwu convinced me that “Biafra” was short for “bia fara,” which he said literally meant “come take” in Igbo.

You can imagine my shock when I discovered that even Biafra that I’d invoked as the lexical evidence for associating “Igboness” to the name Bianca and which my friend told me meant “come take,” isn’t even an Igbo word! It’s a Portuguese word—like Lagos is, by the way.

Well, maybe it’s incorrect to say Biafra is a Portuguese word since it really doesn’t mean anything in Portuguese—like Lagos does in the language. (Lagos is the Portuguese word for lakes.) We do know, however, that Biafra was singlehandedly invented by Portuguese explorers and cartographers to refer to “the Gulf of Guinea stretching from the Niger River delta to northern Gabon.”

But why would people want to escape an odious colonial name like “Nigeria” for another colonial exonym like “Biafra”? If Biafra would be an ethno-state, what’s hard about coming up with an Igbo name for it? Are we that mentally damaged by colonial subjugation that we can’t even name ourselves by our names in our dream ethno-states?

Back to Bianca. I learned that Bianca is actually an Italian name that means “white.” How interesting! If I had taken literature in high school, I probably would have encountered the name in Shakespeare’s “Othello” and “The Taming of the Shrew.”

And thats if the elections will be free and fair

It doesn't matter who wins the Presidential elections, if the elections are not generally seen to be free and fair, there will be serious crisis after the elections
Based on antecedence, if they want to rig, they'll rig for Atiku, not Tinubu. Though I don't know exactly how the new system works, I believe INEC wants neutrality and to bring rigging to minimum.

Health › Irish Potatoes Famine That Left Many Dead by ScamHunter(op): 11:58pm On Jan 14, 2023
The Irish Potato Famine (1845-1849) was a huge catastrophe that resulted in one million dying from starvation and one million leaving their homeland, mostly for North America.

It’s really hard to put into words how scarring this famine was for so many Irish people and the suffering was tremendous. The psychological scars still impact Ireland’s psyche today.

It almost sounds like a fairy tale to hear how a Sultan from a far away land heard of this tragedy and went out of his way to send ships crammed with food and medicine to the Irish people dying from hunger and disease.

When Ottoman Sultan Abdulmejid heard of the suffering from his Irish dentist, he felt great compassion and sorrow for the plight of the Irish. The Sultan originally wanted to donate 10,000 pounds to the starving populace but British diplomats were aghast to hear this because Queen Victoria had donated a small sum of 2,000 pounds.

The British Government refused to accept the large donation so he only donated a measly sum of 1,000 pounds, but he secretly sent five ships loaded with food!

As you can imagine, the British government wasn’t happy to hear of this and the navy attempted a blockade to stop the aid from arriving. The ships made it through the lines and arrived at Drogheda, Ireland where they dispersed the food.

The people of Drogheda were so thankful that they had the Islamic and Ottoman symbols added to their city’s coat of arms.

Islamic Symbols above the knights helmet.
It really does read like a fairy tale and is a gesture of great empathy.

It’s easy to imagine how happy the starving people were to see those Turkish ships arriving with food. According to James Hack Tuke, people were, “living, or rather starving, upon turnip-tops, sand-eels and seaweed, a diet which no one in England would consider fit for the meanest animal."

But the story does not end there.

During the Crimean War, Britain joined the Ottoman Empire in their fight against the expanding Russian Empire. About 30,000 Irish soldiers served in the war and it was noticed that the Irish people served enthusiastically in defense of the Sultan who had helped them during their greatest times of need.

This highest form of compassion was even remembered during the First World War. It was reported that British officers complained that the Irish lacked the will to fight against the Ottomans who remembered stories of the Ottoman Empire helping during a famine when no one else would.

Sultan Abdulmejid is a model of faith in humanity being restored.

Politics › Re: We Will Joyfully Escort Tinubu To Aso Rock On May 29 — Gov Bello by ScamHunter: 10:34pm On Jan 14, 2023
OddsDoc:
The Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, Friday said that he alongside other members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, will joyfully escort the party’s Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to the Presidential Villa, Abuja on May 29.

Governor Bello described the APC’s presidential candidate as the president in waiting.

The Kogi State chief executive stated this while fielding questions from the State House correspondents after meeting behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House, Abuja.

Asked what are the chances of Tinubu to win the February 25 presidential election, he said, “Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu has 21 governor’s, APC governors. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has touched lives of Nigerians across the board. He is a performer. He is a builder.

“He built human beings, he build nations. And he has started telling us exactly what is going to do. And his administration, by the special grace of God, is going to be more run by the younger generation.

“And you know, surely that the younger generation constitute the quantum number of voters in this coming election.

“We’re more enlightnened. We know that Bola Ahmed Tinubu knows the road. And we are ready to follow that person who knows the road, which is Bola Ahmed Tinubu .

“Thank God that is a candidate of President Muhammadu Buhari. And that is why you can see that President Muhammadu Buhari is already campaigning for him, that he will continue where he will stop. To continue to add to the value of what he has put on ground.

“So the issue of any other person campaigning against him, I mean, you’re only making him to be more popular. He’s already a good product that have sold himself. He has distinguished himself and we’re all 100% ready to vote Bola Ahmed Tinubu, come 25th of February 2023. And we will joyfully escort him to the villa on May 29 2023 by the special grace of God, Jagaban is just a president in waiting by the special grace of God. Thank you very much.”

Asked what were the secrets behind the legacy projects inaugurated by the President, the governor said, “Yes, definitely. You know, when Mr. President assumed office, immediately he assumed office, he quickly hit the ground running in terms of infrastructure, in terms of fighting insecurity, in terms of delivering good governance to the people, by the special grace of God, when I came on board, I have no any other thing to do than to emulate him. And to make sure that infrastructure is provided for the people.

“Once there is infrastructure, businesses will run. People will mind their business without necessarily waiting for government. And that is the only thing we can do for the people. And that is why we are elected into this office. And that is what I will continue to do. Till the last day I leave office.”

Politics › Re: Do You Know Why Obi Will Win? by ScamHunter(op): 10:20pm On Jan 14, 2023
Another reason why he'll win is the pie factor in the north. The two northern gladiators Atiku and Kwankwanso will divide the northern votes like pie. Even Tinubu may grab a handful of votes there.

Meanwhile, Obi has secured SE/SS/3/4 of MB and Northern minorities votes. Then most Christian votes.

Itsta no-brainer.

My God, I am yet to see a more foolish person than you.

If Obi really meant well, he would have seen that we had an export problem, and gone into manufacturing like Dangote and some others.

The problem with Nigeria is not that we import. Every country imports.

The problem with Nigeria is that we import far more than we export.

This creates a trade deficit.

And the fact the we import way more than we export, means that demand for foreign goods will rise as against demands for local goods, thereby killing off local factories. There are many other terrible consequences including a currency losing value, and inflation.
And now he's the only presidential candidate that wants to make you a manufacturing country but hatred won't allow you to think straight as an urchin. You prefer a man that wants to narcotirize you like this:
