When you do this sincerely, your receive the Grace that enables you to deny ungodliness and lusts and to live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world, not by your power but by the power of Him that will work in you to will and do of His good pleasure. How did you arrive at 70%? |
[quote author=naijastoryz post=60963784]as shared by olu-adegoke on facebook A TRUE LIFE(?) STORY OF AN EX-DEEPER LIFE MEMBER ==== She was an early member of this church when it started in UNILAG in the 70s as a campus fellowship, she used to be a top leader of a section of the church, but today she's only a little above an ordinary member after investing all her life into the church. [size=12pt](Deeper Life did not start as a Campus fellowship with various sections or units; it was just a Bible study with members who attended their various Churches on sunday!) There was NO sunday services till perhaps later but not the 70s! Top leader in what respect? Well, perhaps this mirrors your experience and you believe DL is a scam: 1. For those who have left already, kindly hold to your Bibles and treat it as what it is - the Word of God (not of DL). 2. Understand that there is no gathering without its tares, no band of disciples without a Judas, hence free your mind of all bitterness arising from sweeping generalisation. 3 Dont despise, fight against portions of the Word that calls to holiness and being unspotted from the world simply because DL emphasizes it; well, they didnt write it and like it or not, you will answer for it one day. 4. Lay aside all bitterness and malice (yes, he that hates his brother is a murderer and no murderer has Eternal life {whatever your claims to the comtrary}). 5. Finally, wherever you decide to worship after you've left, realise that you will meet fallible men that will disappoint you (just like you have done to some) Peace. |

Well, well, well, a Deeper Life bashing thread where many have vented their hate for the Church!!! Reading some comments here, I see people who are : 1. misinformed and do not want to correct their perception by investigation; 2. once members but left due to offences by members/leaders but are still hurting and need some inner healing; root of bitterness defiling many! 3. originally born in Deeper life but grew up with great resentment against the Church because their parents/leaders went about certain things the wrong way and till date, they cant shed that. 4. people who heard that the church emphasizes holiness and joined hoping to be at once surrounded by angels hence when they were disappointed by someone, left but are still bitter! 5. people who are religious but somehow believe Deeper Life forwarded the motion in 1 John 2:15-17 and since they lacked grace to obey pulled out to seek for people who will tell them grace implies that God depreciates certain part of His Word (God Forbid!). 6. others sound as though they will be forced or abducted to marry there . Corollary? Let's focus on the weightier matters of Grace Titus 2:11-14, Holiness Hebrews 12:14 and Power Acts 1:8. rather than fiddling here with non-essentials while the World burns!!! P.S. for those who are bitter or resentful, settle it and empty your heart; remember He that hates his brother is a murderer and no murderer has Eternal life 1 John 3:15(paraphrased) and Jesus (If you call Him Lord) said: 35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” Matthew 18:35(read the whole passage to get the background that led to this conclusion) |
Good morning. |
The phrase, 'itching ears'when considered contextually especially with the clause,"heap to themselves" in the same passage means that they will run after, listen to, buy tapes and literatures of etc 'pastors' that will tell them what they love to, and are itching to hear. Especially words that subtly : 1. Tell them Gain is godliness (Laodicean Church); 2. Encourages a form of godliness without the power thereof; 3. Makes merchandise of them through covetousness; 4. makes them mind earthly things; 5. tell them they are what they are not never mind what the holistic perspective of the Bible says etc One interesting characteristic of these pastors and their unfortunate followers is that they generalise a lot and gain public approval! Just like this: They (Korah, Dathan and Abiram) came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?” Numbers 16:3, After they(3) were judged, you would have though the eyes of the Israelites will be opened but no, deception sticks fast: 41 The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. “You have killed the Lord’s people,” they said. Num 16:41 The same people that wanted to stone Moses that preached the Truth, stuck their necks out for the false ones! |

Some speak today of money being the wheel of the Gospel ...if that was the case why didnt Jesus tell His disciples/us so? |
lofty900:Thank you, it's getting sickening. |
Indeed. In the spirit of fairness let tanks also be stationed in all Northern states against October 1st to prevent any uprising. |

We are saved by faith through Grace and we stand by faith(Eph 2:8 and 2 corinth 1:24b)...can a Christian lose his faith? and/or can a Christian abandon his faith? If yes, does he remain saved and is he still standing? |
johngoals9:Thanks a million for this resourceful post. |

sonofthunder:Amen, thanks a lot |
sonofthunder:Thanks for the mention bro. Op, this is the meaning: At the time this command came, there was not much of the revelation of the Names of God and/or the Holy Things like we have them today. However, like the first answer rightly said, this is the amplified version of that command: 1. You shall not use or repeat the name of the Lord your God in vain [that is, lightly or frivolously, in false affirmations or profanely]; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. Exodus 20:7 2. However, it also means we should not act in ANY way that will make others blaspheme God's Name: lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain. Proverbs 30:9 Just like David was judged because as a result of his immorality and murder, he gave ,"... great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme" (2 samuel 12:14) |
Sarassin:john died around 100 CE when Justin Martyr was born. How then is this possible? |
LoJ:alright |
Now, let's be fair to Truth. Philo , being a hellenistic Jew, got that from Proverbs 8:22-30 and Genesis 1:28 (though i dont think he referenced it). Hence what I see John doing by Inspiration is going back to the Truth and clarifying it i.e. saying it as it should be said with respect to what had been written centuries before Philo was born. And Henry Martyn's quote there points ,more to that passage (and Psalm 104:30) than to Philo. P.S. I realised that your source is history while mine is the Bible hence there was no point wasting time since you take yours as authentic and I take mine as so too. However, since you quoted my source rather incorrectly, I believe speaking up is in order. |
And the women too: One particular meeting was held in a town called Devils Den. No minister had ever been successful there, and people came to mock her. They were looking to see the female evangelist who would soon run out of town shattered and defeated. But they received the surprise of their lives! Sister Etter might have been a woman, but she was not one to be taken lightly. She knew the key to spiritual warfare, and the fervency of prayer that unlocked heaven. For three days Maria preached and sang. No one moved. Finally, on the fourth day, she exercised her spiritual authority through intercession and tore down the demonic principality that ruled over Devils Den. She prayed that God would show a great display of His power to break the people's stiff formality. That night, people throughout the meeting cried and repented to God. It was the greatest manifestation of the presence of God the town had ever witnessed. (God's Generals - Roberts Liardon) Oh for some old-fashioned sister today that know some old-fashioned persistence and importunity in prayer till the light shone through! |
Now this has always being a challenge to me; they followed His Footsteps (Luke 6:12): Chief among the Primitive Methodists' praying men was John Oxtoby, affectionately known as "Praying Johnny". Praying Johnny was not known for his culture or great intellect, he possessed neither. What he possessed was the faith that moves mountains. He was of average height, sharp features, light brown hair and brown eyes. His speech and words were not considered eloquent to the ears of men, yet they were always sweet to the Father's ear. "Six hours each day he usually spent on his knees, pleading with God, in behalf of himself, the Church and sinners." The Primitive Methodists loved to preach, pray, sing and shout. John Oxtoby was certainly no exception to this rule. "When travailing in anguish for a revival in the neighborhood in which he was laboring and when deeply anxious to see the glory of the Lord revealed, he spent many hours in secluded retirement; and has sometimes in this manner devoted whole days and nights to God." Praying Johnny not only exercised the power of prayer in the closet, but also in the public assembly. Often in answer to his public prayers whole assemblies were slain by the power of the Holy Spirit. Strong men struck with conviction fell to their knees and cried for mercy. Through the testimony of John Oxtoby's prayer life, Jesus Christ was seen not only as a God who hears, but also as a God who speaks. On behalf of despairing saints, Praying Johnny touched the heart of Jesus and brought back precise words of direction and encouragement. The legendary story of Oxtoby's intercession for Filey illustrates his persistence in prayer. The town of Filey had resisted the efforts of many preachers and each one had been driven out until all efforts were abandoned. "Oxtoby himself undertook the mission, and when he came within sight of Filey, he fell on his knees in agony of soul. Under a hedge he wrestled in prayer and wept and interceded for the success of his mission. A passing miller heard his voice and stopped in astonishment. The miller heard Johnny Oxtoby say, 'Will thou make a fool of me, God? I told them at Bridlington that thou was going to revive thy work, and thou must, or I shall never be able to show my face among them again, and then what will the people say about praying and believing?' He continued to plead for several hours. The struggle was long and heavy but he would not give in. At last he rose exclaiming, 'It is done, Lord, it is done! Filey is taken!' And it was. Fresh from the presence of God, Oxtoby entered Filey and began singing in the streets. 'Turn to the Lord and seek salvation' was his theme and soon a crowd of rough fishermen flocked to listen." The fire of God fell as he began to preach. Men trembled, hardened sinners wept and while he prayed many fell on their knees crying for mercy. If our churches and communities are not radically transformed in the same way our Christian liberties will very soon be swept away by a tidal-wave of oppression and sin. Our nation is on the verge of self-destruction, and our only alternative is revival! As a nation we have continued to stray because the Church has stubbornly failed to pray! |
