Due to the competition in getting a positive decision for a fully funded admission into any research based program (MS/PhD), it is quite expected you send emails and get in touch with potential advisor(s) in your related field before applying.

That way, you can mention the advisor(s) name(s), his Lab and the correspondence you had while writing your SOP even without getting any substantive assurance. It sets your applications apart from the rest.

Also, it makes follow ups becomes easier after application must have been made.

Ideally, you shouldn't apply or book an appointment for an F1 visa with more than 120 days to your start date. In your case, you have booked a date with more than 1year before resumption. You can never get approval at the consulate even if it wasn't cancelled because your visa would wasted in Nigeria before you would be eligible to enter the US. CBP will not let you in here if you arrive more than a month.

After securing your January 2022 date for a Fall 2023 semester, which is way too early, you ought to have rescheduled your appointment (you can only do so once with the same MRV fee you paid at GTB) to June of 2023.
