Hello guys,
Its been a while I practically disappeared from here. Anyway just to update those who might be reading in the future. I got a 1220 in my GRE 700Q 520V. Petroleum Engineering.
TEXAS A M - REJECTED!
TEXAS TECH - REJECTED!
LSU - REJECTED!
I largely knew it was gonna be like this, I did not know what taking the GRE again and maybe getting a 740 or 760 in a short span would tell the admissions committee. Anyways the last school University of Oklahoma told me a decision was posted May 4th to me via air mail. I waited till last week and emailed again complaining that I had not yet received the mail ( I paid a whooping 90 dolls for that application oh) and they should let me know what the decision was so I can be at ease. The admissions officer says ok let me forward your complaints to the person in charge, minutes later a reply comes and says if you want us to send you a new I 20 and admission packet you will have to pay 60 dolls for it via fed ex bla bla bla bla. I say slow down you have not told me what the decision is yet and she replies yes you were admitted.

UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA - ACCEPTED !
Not seen the I 20 yet sha but I have plenty mixed feelings. Anyway to anyone reading never give up, I know I did in my mind sha am still shocked.

It amazing that people are quick to dismiss the existence of JuJu, a practice that has been proven dates back even before Christ himself walked the earth. We belive the bible stories when moses parted the Red Sea, the talking burning bushes, and sticks turning into snakes. In ever religion there are alway stories of some impossible feats happening, e.t.c angels appearing, people flying, or living in other elements such as fire and water. We blacks are quick to accept if, if the illustration has a white man in a beard behind it. But when it a black baba alawo, the we are quick to dismiss it. JuJu I once had pins  and nails and some bone like structure put into me at a masqurade festival in a small village called Ashaka in delta. The local priest had to give me a bath at night and wash all this stuff out of me. In front of my mother, brother, girlfriend and daugter nails were coming out of me. Please belive Juju is real if it hasnt happend to you then thank your God and stay away! It is nothing to be curious about.
Not everybody believes in them either.

I dont want to argue for or against this topic cuz i hate fighting over what i can hardly understand, i ve had many reasons to believe and disbelieve in juju or even God atimes but certain things that happened b4 my eyes have made me keep quiet whenever such issues arise,
For those who dont believe i have 3 questions, during Buhari regimes when i was abt 10yrs,,,,armed robbers were shot in their village squares and i witnessed one who was shot several times without the bullets penetrating until the commander rushed into the nearby farm, plucked a fresh palm frond,, tied on the tip of the gun barrel, muttered some rubbish hit the barrel on the ground and released a shot which tore thru the robbers heart and killed him,,,, so,,
, what really happened? why didnt the other bullets penetrate?, dont tell me they were rubber bullets cuz we little kids picked them after and played with them,
2, One man back in the village had a plantation of fruits near our elementary school and we always finished the fruits b4 he cld get them, then we suddenly noticed that every pupil who went in there to steal came out with rashes on his body including me lol  but it never happened to any member of his family, this made us to stay clear .lol--
3, Our traditional ruler died yrs back during the peak of raining reason and to bury him,,, they gathered the so called rain makers and rain stoppers, lol to our greatest surprise there were heavy rains everywhere including our town but the sun was shining only on his few thousand sq miles  village, lol,  all these are not heresay,  i witnessed them so pls guys,,, enlighten me, i am not saying they were juju works but explain pls,  thanks
1. Your story does not check out, I can bet my life it was hearsay, no one would allow a ten year old child to go watch a public shooting, number  goes down as a lie for me. Trust me because I grew up in warri and we were the cheif mongers of dem shoot am e no enter, I have even gone to a babalawo's shop to get cut and bounce- so read my lips nothing like that ever worked with a sharp knife of course we tested with blunt knives and when you are hit with the machete instead of a cut the place just swells - fact!
2. There are many leaves that can cause irritation and rashes and did it occur to you that the man had an antidote? think again abeg
3. GEEEEEEZZZZZ did you ever do rainfall in secondary school??

Jidebiz,

I dont understand your first question

To the second question
Getting a TA/RA as a Masters student is usually difficult Unless you are in the PhD program, Secondly you are in a popular Masters program like Pet Engr which has a lot of students and applicant,

What makes you think you would have the edge to compete for a TA/RA since you dont have any previous teaching/Research experience?
Another thing I have noticed in the US, Chinese and indians get more of these TA positions than others, Maybe due to their high numbers or because of networking/parapo. We have more lecturers who are Chinese/Indians and they might tend to get students from their countries for these positions(I might be wrong though)
I wasnt offered any form of assistantship. I was asked to pay full tuition and they have a payment plan.

I didnt attend UH.

The distance is an advantage which might be useful in the future but for now its not really making much of an influence.

The pedigree TAMU and Austin have built in the oil industry it would take some time for UH to get there. Its like saying the kind of pedigree  OAU, UI UNN and ABU have, How long do you think it would take schools like FUTA, FUTM, UNIABUJA(which is in the capital) to get.

UTAustin and TAMU are also in Texas and most of the BIG BOYS from Texas in most industries including the Oil Industry are alumnis. do yo know the current secretary of defence Robert Gates was also a former TAMU president? Do you think favoritism don't exist in America too?

Anywhere you work, You would always notice some form of Alumni allegiance, Per the ranking, TAMU, Austin and Stanford are tops.

If you are talking about an MBA the school top coys like Goldman Sachs etc go to recruit(Wharton, Harvard, UChicago, MIT, Stanford) are mostly out of New York though they still recruit from NY schools which houses the Wall Street(the commercial nerve center)

How about LSU do you know much about their program and job prospects?

dayokanu:

I didnt contact anyone at TAMU except calling Barbi Miller and Maria Barrufet sometime and asking for my admission decision

Your lack of experience wont really count that much, A lot of students go directly from Undergrad to PG.

http://www.facebook.com/TAMUGraduateStudies
Well I guess I would make the decision, what I am calculating is how much it would cost to send in all the applications and get a reject when I could have buckled down and get a better GRE score, I guess my biggest fear is getting rejected because of my score in the long run.
jidebiz:

@SCYLLA, take it easy sir, this isn't the time to break down at all. I presume you are planning to enroll for the fall 2011 session and as you might already know, most of them have deadlines if you are seeking some form of assistantship. Most of the petroleum engineering schools expect you submit your full application which includes the online process and sending of your documents before the second week of December, so you mustn't slack or slow your horses.
Firstly, I'd be realistic with you but you must understand I'm only speaking based on my personal research. Your GRE score isn't bad at all but it's not the most appropriate. So the question is what is the way forward right and not what is the downside. Admission requirement is more than just GRE, your CGPA, SOP, recommendation letters, TOEFL are very key as well. You must compensate using these documents to bolster your stand.
I won't advice you to apply to University of Texas, Texas A&M university because they have too many applicants with perfect scores among other documents as well.
You MUST get good recommendation letters. Make sure your recommenders write very highly of you. University of Houston have their own recommendation form, you must get them to fill it in high regard of you.
Whatever you do, don't despair ! ! ! ! ! think analytically, do your research, and most importantly,  KEEP YOUR CHIN UP.
Cheers
Thank you very much sir, the most painful thing to me is that I know the Q score is not really reflective of my abilities. All I really care about is the admission, I could care less about the funding, I just want a chance to show what I can do that's all. My main target is TAMU I don't know about you but I want to get into that school maybe that is what is making me sound desperate. But what you have said about other documents is true, I had no idea this would hit me as hard as it did, I have always been a sucker for failure anyway not that I am a super student but I was always smart enough to be a lot better than average. So here is my dilemma, do I close my eyes and write it all over again now once and for all and be done with it, I dont know if its the highest score ets would report or both of them. My cousin at TAMU has been very supportive though telling me that the score is ok just like you did I guess the big question would be if I can banish the monster from my head that my score is not good enough.

I worked as a consultant in a multinational to the Energy industry.

My Clients were Major Multinationals in Nigeria in Escravos, lagos and Bonny Island.

I contacted my Professors when applying because your recommendation letter is a part of your application and your application would never be deemed complete without it.

I did NOT graduate with a First Class.

When applying to UH If you are not a Petroleum Engr graduate you would have to take 4 prerequisite classes

Introduction to Petroleum Engineering
Reservoir Engineering I
Petroleum Fluid Properties and Phase Equilibria
Origin and Development of Oil & Gas Reservoirs

I guess that's part of what I am also worried about, my lack of experience. I meant if you contacted professors at TAMU.

Did you have any major work experience in the petroleum industry? When you were sending your application did you contact professors before or after you were offered admission? and please could you tell me what you graduated with. I would understand if you are not comfortable sharing your info online.

The trick is this.

Some school are easier to get into than others, A school like UT Austin and Stanford would be much difficult to get into. You can choose 5 schools 2 tough ones 2 middle one and 1 safe low ranked school(In case others dont work out).

Based on the school ranking, TAMU is one of the best schools for Pet Engr and when you are in school, a lot of coys come to recruit from school. Because they have a stronger network of Alumnis in top companies. The same way it happens in Nigeria, You cant compare the Alumni network and industry standing of schools like OAU, UI, ABU, UNILAG and UNN to Babcock, OSU, FUTO, NAU or ATBU.

While in OAU, Many companies came to recruit students directly from Ifge which they didnt extend to a school like FUTA or UNAD

UH Masters in Petroleum Engr is still kind of new and they dont have the industry pedigree just yet which A&M has. In all UH would be easier to get in much more than A&M. I was also required to write TOEFL and got 100 in the IBT.

I was offered non-thesis in UH.

I declined to be a cougar and became an Aggie. (Find out what that means)
Thanks dayo, was your first degree in pet engr?

@dayokanu
At Uni of houston what were you offered thesis or non thesis? Plus I was thinking since you guys have gone through the process, which low risk schools in your opinion would consider me. Plus is which option is more competitive the thesis or non-thesis?

More so is there no way to test if one would be admitted without paying the fees and going through the crazy process of sending transcripts and all that. Someone suggested contacting the professors, please help!!!! as I am going out of my mind here cry cry cry

For Engineering Masters your Quant matters a lot.

I studued for mine in 2006 and got 740Q, 600V.

When you are trying to get into a top course like Pet Engr you need all you can.

Guys like Davidylan are wizards

I feel so bad, maybe I would take the rest of the week to think about it.
Education / Re: General Question On Graduate Studies In Us, Uk Or Canada by SCYLLA: 10:07pm On Sep 22, 2010
seuncaroline:

Can you improve on your score? Definitely, but it all depends on you. I did a 670Q/500V in 2008, got rejected from all schs with some pointing out that my GRE Q Score was the reason eventho i had like 4.4/5 (pet engr). I did another GRE after <2months of intense prep and pulled a Q740/V580 and some of thesame schs that rejected me gave me admission and TA/RA. So, if i were you ( with a mech engr backgroud that wants to switch to a hot scarce course like Petro Engr), I'd put different factors into consideration and make a decision that will improve your chances ones and for all.

For the other Canada pet engr sch, chk out U of Regina and Dalhiousie U.

Now I am scared and really worried, which schools rejected you from the US? Oh meeeeennn this is not funny at all I have barely slept a wink since my exam I am just sooooo worried. So in your opinion my score is not good enough?

Great Quant score bro, I've been trying to download powerprep from the internet but to no avail. Do you know of any website where I can get it from?

@scylla
congrats for your score,
your UA rejection didnt come as a surprise to me as one of my guys that met all req on their website also applied without gre and spent like N30-45k for transcript,fedex,$100 app fee, yet got same reply,

one advice i gave him initially was---there are limited schools in the world doin master, petroleum engr(4in canada,17-20 in US, 3-5 in UK, 1 in Holland and Germany and so on) and competition is pretty rife. So Zap the crap they posted on their website that nigerians and chinese ve special req and dont need gre, blah, blah, blah,

Imagine a situation where over 500-1000 applicants(including u and others without gre) applied for just 30-40 slots and like 250 has gre with >700Q score plus other req that u ve, UA w'd ve no chioce than to tell you to shove your app up your backside. Its painful, but you cud reapply now that u ve your gre but for an engineerring course and a scarse one like Petro engr, i'd advice u hit a Q score of >750 with a CGPA of >=4.0/5.0 to stand a good chance, else, you might just be throwing away another $100(Canadian) again,

congrats again and success in your decison.
I tire for the whole thing oh, they specifically say they do not need GRE and on their website the minimum from Nigerian Universities is a 2-1 which if just 3.5 and my GPA was 3.90 total my last two years of school sits at about 4.2xxx but I cannot begin to measure my disappointment. I was even thinking that canada would be a wild card school for me just incase the American schools do not give my any admission.

I have also been thinking about my GRE score and I am actually wondering if I should retake, the conditions on the day were hard but during my prep my average score was 740 with the highest being 790 and lowest 670. I am not so sure if retaking it to get a score of 750 would really be worth it in the long run as most schools emphasize that it is the whole process that is looked at and not just one parameter.
Furthermore I think it is my moving from mechanical to petroleum and my lack of real working experience that did me in. I really feel so so down.

I only found UofA and UofCalgary offering petroleum engineering, which other two schools offer the course?
Education / Re: General Question On Graduate Studies In Us, Uk Or Canada by SCYLLA: 11:15am On Sep 22, 2010
So I got 1220 in my GRE Q700 and V520, I am very disappointed sha so many things happened that were way outta my control, I did not even report my scores because I wanted to sit and think if I should retake it. What do you think guys?

BTW I got my first rejection today from the University of Alberta (they did not need GRE so I sent a prelim application) and I must say it is very heart wrenching, I have not had a bad couple of days like this in a long long long while.

So thread resurrected!

It was crazy as I missed my flight to abuja(thanks to pdp Convention) then had to take the one for the day I was writing my exam, I managed to reach there 30 mins to my exam time and heard the stupid server crashed and a workstation was converted to the server needless to say I did not start until 4 hours later and it was apparent I would miss my evening flight back out of Abuja and I spent the time trying to get Aero to rebook my flight, I was mentally physically and emotionally exhausted when I started the exam. So my advice to you, make sure you get to your exam center way way before the time and remain relaxed if you can.

Finally wrote my GRE and got 1220, 700Q and 520V. I hope this would be enough to get something good, but for now I am graduating from this thread to the schools and admission thread. I wish the rest of you luck.

Cheers.

I thought this thread was dead and gone, me I am itching to get my own admission and visa subsequently but this GRE is killing! I have given up on verbal and trying to concentrate on quantitative for now. How many permutation and combination questions are on the quantitative section? A score of 780 is like getting all 28 questions right? I thought the test was a CAT?

Oh and lastly there is a thread on graduate study in the US guys please please lets talk about schools there I am itching to ask loads of questions.

Oya you guys should stop bickering abeg, I think both sides have made their points. Even though I still dont agree that amodu is better than lagerback technically, I still feel bringing obasi on was a mistake and its as simple as that.

If we are to remove sentiment from all this, if lagerback fails to get them into the second round then a shrewd nff boss must ask then why sack amodu? I mean well for the swede but things are not just going his way and if he fails in getting his target I say good riddance to him too and then if need be he should re apply again.

We are not going to eat these permutations and excuses at the end of the day, I watched the second half of that game again and I was just recoiling all through at the lack of defensive capabilities of the team, even North korea dpr closed down better than the team.

Finally in my opinion, I see why no matter how bad their form may be now there is still some sense in playing an experienced player before an uncapped player, haruna was no match for the greek midfield, well so much for talent.
