Besides, the way you guys claim everything under the sun, we'll never hear word if na Achebe win the Nobel , exactly the way the person I quoted was quick to throw in Achebe and his literary skills just to brag as usual, so I quickly called him back to reality that there's another literary giant in Nigeria, a giant with international seal of approval in ultimate human achievement called the Nobel prize, the first African and the only Nigerian to be showered with such honor.
Quick point- Achebe in every way deserves the Nobel Laureate. He was not given one because of significant criticism of eurocentrism and the dehumanization of Africans in western literature most especially in Conan's Heart of Darkness. I am proud that Achebe stood up for his race first, and did not care for something as silly as a nobel laureate. Please not us insult a great man and spend more time on the useless ones on NL grin grin grin

Those asians parents are stinkly rich, so even senator kid will not want to pay for school in US. Everybody from naija looks for scholarship.
Sometimes, smartness doesn't necessarily makes you the best, look at Bill Gate, Michael Dell and co. They are all dropped out and now they have most impacts.
LOL, no they are not. Thats the point. The large majority of asians win scholarships to schools in the US. Naija people too look for scholarships but their numbers are significantly less than the japanese (China is one freaking big country so no comparison).

Bill Gate and Michael Dell are really smart academically. Super smart especially Bill Gates who is a really a genius academically.

loma:
@Sefago

You do not need to be supersmart to make a first class in either Nigeria or the US. You just need to be smart and consistent.

Now these Asians you mentioned, while some of them are extremely solid in the sciences (maths, engineering, programming), they are very weak in other areas. Equally, they have a very strong support group in grad school which allows them to shine.

In summary, anyone who makes a First Class in a good Nigerian university can do the same in the US , provided he is ready to strecth himself to learn and relearn and does not rest on his oars. Chikena!
I agree, except would differ in some aspects. Anyone who can make a 2-1 and even 2-2 in Nigeria can easily make a 1st class equivalent (3.6+) in 90% of their universities. When you now get to the creme de la creme of American universities, then i would argue only a few of the first class Nigerian students would even make even a 2-1 (3.4-3.5 cGPA) in the US.

Asians are good everywhere. Its bad belle that makes Nigerians not see this. They are solid all round. The people who suggest that they are weak in some areas are usually oyibo who are jealous. This is a typical asian, first generation parent comes to the US, works hard and gets a PhD since that is the only way they can stay in the US. The asian now makes his son, attend the best secondary/universities and his son could excel in anything while entering prestigious work fields usually the prerogative of oyibo people.

I do think Nigeria's grading system is a bit unfair though. So how many people get third class? Only the bottom 7% in UK or US universities get a third. I a sure it would be higher in Nigeria. No wonder someone like fawehinmi could 3rd class and still be a brilliant lawyer.

akigbemaru:
Which Asians? Do you know US rated Nigerians as the highiest education seeking people in USA. Let me tell you, Asians boys have been known for fraud. They used camera pens to record the exams, I watched the documentary. But in Nigeria's case, some people hire chaps to do the exams, but that doesn't take it away that they are some talented Asians or Nigerians though.
Seeking education, and attending the best schools in the world are two different things. Asians make 50% of Berkeley, arguably the best school in the world, a school that is trying to keep its black population up to 8%. Asians do cheat, but not all, and they are really consistent grades wise to suggest  cheating is not a continuous thing for them. They both combine cheating and studying hard.

No I can't read, you should kindly read it for me. How did those men become rich if not from oil. Everything in Nigeria from A-Z is linked to oil. Like I said, how much did they inherit from their fathers or how many bags of cocoa did they sell to become rich if not from SE/SS crude oil?
So the igbo men who are rich indirectly from Niger Delta oil, they no be thief? Or is oil also their ancestral rights grin

Those of you that argue wrongly, my school in US was just 2200 students and we had close to 80 students with GPA from 3.5 to 4.0 on 4.0 scale
True that, the US is grade inflated though. They are like father christmas, dashing out As. However, I think its because one can choose the class they are going to take for their major and given more academic freedom than Nigeria.
Education › Re: 87 Students Bag First Class In UNILAG by SEFAGO(m): 3:28am On Jan 28, 2010
When I got to Yankee, I was fortunate to work in testing center in one popular US University. You will see students with grade of 4.0/4.0, but when he or she does GRE or GMAT; they barely score close to 900/1600. In every graduation in US you will see more 4.0/4.0 students than anything, just because US grading is cumulative, what you have done after mid-term will never be asked again. Unlike in Nigeria, at the end of semester you will be asked what you have learned since the beginning of semester. Then, in Nigeria, everything is based on knowledge most time, in Yankee it’s your effort most time.
My undergrad hasn't had a 4.0 in its history. Lots of 3.9s though.

The place you worked at must be a state school, am I correct?

When SAT was 1600, before they later Changed it 2400, I know like six different guys that had 1590 more than four times each for people.
Really??

Who are your classmates? What is your department? For the fact that your classmates never made you proud doesn't mean other departments not doing good. I know like three of these boys that got Chevron scholarship too, or that is not by merit again?
ISL boys. Most of them were/are in the engineering departments at Unilags with a few in computer science. The one who were around the same academic ability (some Way higher/slightly higher/slightly lower) comprise a significant part of the people have cuulatives in the engineering departments at unilag with CGPAs around 4.5.

I wouldn't call them super smart. I have seen way better in the US grin. Just check asians out.
Education › Re: 87 Students Bag First Class In UNILAG by SEFAGO(m): 3:14am On Jan 28, 2010
Bro, you are right though, I will rate Unilag as one of the best in the world. I remember, 2002,03,04. We have some young chaps in Unilag, they runs all these standardize tests for people. That’s why I confirmed that we have brains in Nigeria. When SAT was 1600, before they later Changed it 2400, I know like six different guys that had 1590 more than four times each for people. In GMAT their promised scores start from 730 to 780. I know a guy that used to runs SAT, when he gets to his turns to do masters in Yankee, he had 1580 over 1600 in GRE. He’s now in Yankee. When you go to Unilag and you see social life, how their girls working bu.tt unclothed, you will think majority are not serious in Unilag.
U must be kidding. A lot of my classmates in secondary school probably comprise a significant number of the first class students and my experience with them, does not in any way place them in the same group as the best of the world

Eziachi:
So how do you think the likes of OBJ, Christopher Kolade, Abiola, Arisokola, Akingbola, Kola Balogun, Bode George all from very poverty ravaged backgrounds all become rich?
Harvesting and Selling bags of cocoa?
Abiola and oil
Akingbola and oil

One cannot deny the indirect relationship between wealth and oil in Nigeria, but did these guys directly make money from stealing oil?

Most importantly Eziachi can you read?

Interesting, but as people previously mentioned- the number of first class holders in the UK and its equivalent in America are way higher than this. And as someone mentioned if its a top school, the proportion becomes ridiculously high. In the UK first class is for the tpo 10-15% of the class which would be 200 students in a class set of 2000 people. The US, summa c.u.m laude and magna c.u.m laude (Both equivalent to a first class) are typically given to the top 25-30% of the class, probably higher for top schools.

This is unfair- incase these students try and seek studying opportunities of the shore of Nigeria, they would be at a disadvantage undecided

bawomolo:
chances are diddy's son already has a trust fund.
this mayb e extravagant but diddy's has got money to blow. the son did donate his cash gift to yele haiti
Probably at the direction of his father and not from his own personal intuition. A normal 16 year old would not donate jack to any charity, infact charity no go pass him mind. If I got 10,000 dollars at 16, I would be planning major parties man with lots of hot girls grin- philanthropy is not a priority of a 16 year old even a very intelligent and sensitive one grin

yorubas from Lagos or Ogun state has Have Cruz as lastnames
True that. I have met lots of Yoruba with portuguese names especially from lagos. Taio [sic] could also be using his mum's name since that would be better in entertainment. It is not easy having a last name in the lines of "Oluwole" in entertainment grin

It is on record that I am one of a few people on these forums who appeal to all to do away with tribal mudslinging. When Mekuxxx, Wilywily, Sonny_bobo, etc spew their vitriol on these forums, can you name one Igbo person who calls them to order? On this thread alone, I have appealed to Akigbemaru and reporter. What more do you want me to do? They are grown men and feel the need to respond to the usual hate being spewed by some folks.

The difference between you and I, is that I will not descend to the level of ethnic bigots. You have crossed that line. You allowed your emotions to get the better of you because of the posts from Yoruba people who do not agree with your positions. As long as we do not insult one another, we should be free to disagree on issues. That I do not see issues the same way as you, should not resort to you immediately changing your mindset.

Jungle justice it was for my dear friend whom was "homo". We took laws into our own hands back then and anytime i look back i smile with no regrets that i was part of the jungle justice squad that says no to homosexuality.
