Key word is turned. Who told you they turned gay? Take a hypothetical case- Someone was born gay, society pressures him to be hetero, he dates girls, hates it the same way you would hate homo activity (Did that occur to you, switch perspectives mate), then decides to go all out homo. So from your perspective, "he turned gay" but in actual sense "he was always gay"

Ok, Case Study number one: A friend in college. perfectly normal, used to hook up with girls a lot. Senior year of college, comes out that he is gay. Did not tell his parents, interested in using him as a case study because I love case studies so I asked him questions about why he is gay- he gave me the low down that he has always been attracted to men since he was young. But the stigma stopped him and he always hated the fact that he had to date girls. Hooked up with tons of girls, had his first gay boyfriend though he is not really put of the closet

Do you have proof for this. The studies on genetic disposition itself is technically inconclusive, but its more likely than not that gays attraction to others is genetic. I am a bit ambivalent though to be honest. I dont think its possible to actually discover hereditary patterns for homos. I basically thought the same way you did until I went to a couple info sessions this week. For the small boutique firm, the trader I was talking to has a PhD in Chemistry. Chinese guy, did some nanoscience stuff. Absolutely no business background, just extremely smart and good at math.

The other info session was at a major bulge bracket firm. And as you say, they were mostly interested in hiring PhDs as quants, not traders. Still, it doesn't look like you'd necessarily be programming all day at this firm. And they have a good 3 month training program, too.

I'm beginning to think that the best thing to do is to get your foot in the door. Just make sure it isn't something where you are a code monkey.

Yeah, and your undergrad matters lot. I kind of find this stupid but a lot of professors place importance on where you went to for undergrad. So if you did well at a top school you get tons of extrapoints. Scrutinize that website carefully and you would see lots of ivy grads getting average GREs and getting into the top places.

Go edo boy. From what I gathered from discussing with people who took the test, you just need to know a few equations and practise a lot of questions. Dont try and review your physics notes for it. Try and do old exams? I was reviewing for my own subject test which was kind of daft, then took practise exams at 12 in the night the day before the exam, I then finished practising at 5 took a 2 hour nap and headed to do the exam. Dumbest thing I ever did, I drooled on my exam paper. I woke up half way through and managed to get a good score.

Yep, Wallstreet is the best option financially for a math or physics PhD. The pay-scales are eyepopping.

Main thing though is to avoid just being a quant (i.e., programmer.) Most of the money seems to be in trading. Though from what I've learned recently, the boundary between these two specializations (at least, at certain companies) seems to be thinning.

So they say. But goodluck trying to crack sales and trading with a PhD. The guys in IB dont like too much school ooh. They would likely put the PhD in the equity research department at best or quantitative finance. They prefer undergrads or people with work experience for S&T

Previously yes. Before the great recession all the physicists were heading to wall street to do quantitative finance and build models (that never work) to predict the market. Lots of theoretical chemists too, in fact it was estimated that 25% of the PhD students at Harvard Chemistry at some point went into consulting or investment banking. Then yawa burst and the market collapsed.

Physicist have a lot of brainpower and its a very difficult subject. Especially the theoretical side.  Done some physics for a while and its just too much theory, and they guys are a bit simplistic in how the model behavior. I kind of understand why they helped wreck the world economy.

Physics is very competitive, biology has been expanding consistently so the labs are huge. Just dont want him to make the mistake other people i know did- seems like a smart guy, he should really study hard in his GRE Physics- thats very very important to Physics departments way more than in other departments where the GRE subject test is generally disregarded

You might have a shot though it is claimed that no affirmative action goes on in graduate school, but I kind of got letters from HYPSM claiming that I was one of the best candidates to their program (I am no fool, I kind of interpreted it as you are black, you are decently smart, and you have good test scores, voulez vous couchez avec nous?). A lot of the professors were also calling me and being really nice to me, offering to fly me in and pay for my hotels e.t.c just to see teh school. I knew all this special attention came from somewhere

Not that many blacks and/or Nigerians in the U.S. go into physics and I already gave away which Nigerian ethnic group I belong to so if I said where I was at, it wouldn't be too hard to search the phys department website, look through research groups and pin me down. Also, not a grad student yet, though I've been active in research. I'm retaking the Physics GRE and then applying this semester. Took it last semester, didn't do as well as I hoped (because its hard as hell.)

Man the GRE Physics is so difficult. I took my GRE subject test in the UK about a year and a half ago or two years? cannot remember. There was a post-doc from imperial college who did her PhD at MIPT (Moscow Institute- aka effing geniuses) and she found the Physics GRE hard. There were so many people retaking that exam so dont feel bad. I know at least when I took it, a girl from Univeristy of Colorado who was doing her masters at Oxford in Physics, Another American doing his masters in Cambridge were all retaking the exam.

Also let me warn you before hand from previous experience. Graduate school admission for physics is insanely tough. Infact I spent a lot of time on the PhysicsGRE.com website looking through their profiles and I freaked out last year.

I do biophysics myself, but I went through another department. Not going to sit the physics GRE lai lai. In terms of difficulty Physics>>>>Chemistry=Biochemistry>> Biology

I thought university of Utah was good for medicine? I always considered them very good fo medicine, infact they have a famous hospital. Or is it Brigham Young? You know I was premed, before I decided that medicine was not for me. What was he anyways- a doctor or a biochemist. All the nobels go to biochemists nowadays in chemistry or medicine. Ex: The greatest living (since a lot of the greater ones have died) physicist, apart from maybe Murray Gell-Mann, is Steven Weinberg and he's at UT Austin.  

There are many similar examples I could produce.

There is not that much of a gap between UT Austin and Havard in terms of research. I meant for example do you expect to find a top researcher at the University of Tennessee? No, but you will find some genius researcher at the University of Central Lancaster (hope i spelt that right).

Yeah Cambridge is awesome for physics one of the best. I really would love to work at Cambridge to be honest. Its my dream school to work at.

Why are you making assumptions? Why don't let you let him tell you how long he stayed in the UK and in what capacity. Its like someone doing a 5 week program at a university and referring to himself as an alumnus.

Ok, I will be honest with you. I was not the one who started this "my university is better than yours crap." Sagamite did. He said I went to a mediocre school and he is significantly superior to mine. I relaxed, I thought well for you to make that claim you must have went to Cambridge. Anytime I try to debate on Gay rights, he will take a quote and be like:

he will start claiming that the fact that I got a 1500+ after I took the SAT the second time shows I am mediocre and average. Apparently the 1440 I got reading under the candle the first time with only one SAT textbook was mediocre sebi? He found this information and kept on posting it on nairaland continuously. very personal info, I had given out when I was 16 and naive.
