because we are VERY brilliant people. and we have the credentials to prove it, it's not just a boast. I'm not saying that there are no ideas in Igbo land, we're a million miles ahead of the rest of Nigeria in ideas hence why we're building 2 motor companies and a computer
factory
among many things.
We, We, We. Na u get all these things. If you wanted the support of your brothers you should have started the thread- We igbos are intellectual- no igbo person will disagree with you. Thats why its so funny grin

PS: What are these credentials that other Nigerians dont have? We are all the same, still stuck in the 1800s in terms of development relative to the west

Im just scared that all this biafra infatuation will cause us to lose our competitive edge, which is being able to take your destiny in your individual hands, and being capable. If we sit here and act like victims we're going to lose that.
Yes thats what it is an infatuation grin

Everytime a problem in the east comes up everyone starts talking about Biafra, im tired of it, it's not getting us anywhere, we have the brains to build a better future for ourselves, lets use them to find REAL solutions.

TravelRe: Nigeria 'may be' Ranked As 'high Risk' By Uk Biorder Agency. by SEFAGO(m): 5:29pm On Feb 12, 2011
Are those two groups ranked based on the quality of research they carried out or what?
no they are not. A small number of the ivy league have weak research profiles though they are weak in teh US, but would be qualified as strong in the UK. For example Brown is seen as a weak research institution in the US but its research profile is stronger than 80% of the Russell Group. However the student body and prestige at brown in the US is very strong. The job opportunities available to a graduate from Brown would be very very significant.

In geenral most people in the US make a distinction between rigorous undergraduate institutions and Research universities.

well the russell group is an equivalent of the ivy league in the uk and can also provide good opportunities for UK undergraduates
You might as well say OAU/UI is equivalent to Harvard since these are the best in nigeria. Also depends on your definition of good opportunities. They would do the trick though for a simple job but most would not get you a job at an elite firm easily.

Anyways I think at this point I want to encourage everyone to go back home. There is so much we couldn do for Nigeria with the education we receive abroad.

Dont you miss pounded yam and eguisi soup, because I do.

You can't blame the UK government for wanting to reduce immigrant, for one they cant reduce the EU which take massive part of their employments, due to referendum they had with the EU, hence reducing people from non eea.
i agree, its the right of the UK to limit immigration in their country. Their system seems to be already overburdened

Come on guys there is Canada and Australia- these countries have small population density, at leasy consider your prospects there.

There is only one place that no one would be chasing you about in terms of immigration and stuff. the country where you were born----Naija grin

Why Gregory Ugwi changed to Mathematics, honestly I have no clue. I didn't think the question had to do with if he could it handle it or not. He could handle any course, medicine or engineering. However, he had enormous proficiency in mathematics. I think its more of a decision of choice. Gregory is one of the most brilliant minds I have ever come across.
He works for U.S Goldman Sacks today, same company our Minister of finance, Mr. Olusegun Aganga worked for in managing Director capacity but in london.

I returned to the country 2 years ago. Attended Loyola Jesuit College. We were the first sets of students in that school. Still have a vivid memory of the Sosoliso airline crash that killed 60 students of our own. Most of them close friends of my. Graduated Magma cumlaude from (U.S version first class honors with more prominence, in that you have to defend most of your senior works, and all faculty member/professors in your department must sign before such award is bestowed ) from CU Boulder, and currently a senior engineer at NNPC, Abuja. There is nothing like home!
Nice I am happy you went back home. I agree, nothing is better than Nigeria, when you live too long abroad it becomes too difficult for you to come back home.

Yeah it makes sense that he shoudl move to Pure Math if he was more proficient in it than Engineering. I think Engineering and math are significantly different. Actually I know a lot of people that were in your set- would not tell you them though since its also a bit revealing. Yeah i know he works for Goldman Sachs.

Backtracked your posts- seems you went to school with Greg Ugwi- so you were better than him academically. Wow impressive though.

However it seems that more and more people from loyola have surpassed his achievements from what I have seen.

theres ivy league unis in us and russell group unis in uk these are the top unis on both sides of the border rankings or no rankings i respect any graduate from any uni in that list and It is certainly not easy to get into those unis if you see their requirements
The US ivyleague is different from the Russel Group. It comprises the most elite undergraduate institutions. Most of these institutions open job opportunities and have a social and academic tag that only Oxbridge in the UK can match.

Anyways, Nigeria is really a high risk country- eevryone is trying to run away from naija, dont understand why though.
EducationRe: 87 Students Bag First Class In UNILAG by SEFAGO(m): 3:16pm On Feb 12, 2011
You remember Gregory Ugwi, the guy with the highest jamb score in 2002 and was awarded scholarship to attend Princeton University, track him down today and ask him what he feels about U.S engineering curriculum.
^ Did u go to loyola?

Yeah I noticed the Greg Ugwi guy dropped Engineering to study Mathematics. If you know him personally was it because it was too hard or because he did not like engineering?

True though a lot of Nigerian students who were literally the best in Nigeria (Like best in the whole of Nigeria in WAEC) and went to top schools in teh US to study engineering and hard sciences would tell you how challenging the curriculum is.

Nevertheless, I still think the US educational system is grade inflated tongue, not as grade inflated as the UK but still inflated. Yes not in the sciences but the social sciences its just too much especially in Government, Sociology e.t.c

Also it depends on your school, I have some old classmates who have a 3.7 in engineering though they work hard but they are not the brightest bunch on the planet.

You will find that 95% of Nigeria medical school students graduated from high school with distinctions and higher JAMB score! You can't say the same for engineering or other majors. By contrast, engineering in U.S is more rigorous compared to other countries.
I strongly differ. Most of the students I know going to engineering were the best in WAEC with lots 5-8 A1 and none I know made a 1st Class in Engineering though theyw ere very very close. The people studying medicine too were academically hot but the engineering ones were equally the best in Nigeria.

lol, Only Lynn and Rushton, where's Jensen? You shouldn't separate the troika. Pseudoscience is to be absorbed whole, not piecemeal, if you really want to get an idea of the field.
Why the hate these guys are funny now. Yes, they are the epitome of pseudoscience but you can still glean some information on their racial theories.

Aren't these the same goons that said the average I.Q. (not education level, not literacy level, not familiarity with Western science and learning, mind you, but the so called "g factor" or intellectual potential) of Ghana was like 71 and Nigeria's was 67?
While of course this does not make sense from Our/Your perspective, lets be a bit objective. True, first of all they might have had a sample size issue, also we dont know who exactly they tested and what type of questions they tested so yes the test is void. So there would really be no need to analyze the statistics since their methodology is already bound to be whack anyways
Grin Grin Aren't these the same clowns who swear that African Americans have an IQ 15 points higher than sub-Saharan Africans merely by being in the West or mixing with other races, despite glaring evidence to the contrary? Aren't these the same clowns (Rushton, especially) who just fantastically assert that moving into Eurasia, where there is winter, made other groups have to perform more challenging and complex tasks to survive that resulted in higher intelligence/big ol' brains without actually giving any convincing evidence of what these specific tasks were and what actual processes could have led to the specific changes they claim occurred? And without showing or providing any evidence that there were no huge challenges to adapting to different African environments after migrations or showing that it was much easier to survive without employing any thought or performing challenging tasks in Africa than in Eurasia? These guys are not scientists my friend. You know good and well that they are psychologists with a good grasp of statistics and a poor grasp of reality, history, and even the countries and populations they claim to scientifically study. Crackpot "psychometricians" should not be used as a source to back up claims.
true but they serve their purpose. Winning internet arguments grin

Meanwhile, every study of educational attainment and test scores puts Nigerians and Ghanians in the U.K. and U.S. and other countries on about equal footing with their white counterparts, - a phenomenon which could not possibly be explained by the so-called Flynn effect, as the Flynn effect can't result in a 30-35 point I.Q. jump (2 or more standard deviations if we take st. dev = 15) in one's children just from moving to a more intellectually enriching and stimulating country.
Where are these studies? Most of these studies suggest high academic achievement of immigrants relative to minorities of the same race i.e Africans and Carribeans doing quite well in the UK (with black african girls achieving equivalent GCSE to white males) and US (Where Africans are proprtionally overrepresented in elite colleges).

No study explicitly (That I am aware off) compares the IQs of Nigerians in the west to that of Whitse or Asians.

Also, how can anyone say women were really trying to win the Fields medal for eight decades? Do you really even believe women have been "trying" to win it since before the late sixties, when societies around the world started to change and it became less unusual for women to go into such fields? Also, when you have a small population to begin with (I mean the population of female research mathematicians is much much smaller than the male one) how can you win it anyway when you make up 5-10% at most (being generous, just for the sake of the argument) and the group you're supposed to outdo makes up 90-95%? Think about this logically.
For one, the question is why were there less women in the sciences mathematics before?

I think that was the premise for his statement. What exactly prevented and still prevents women from pursuing hard sciences and engineering doctoral degrees even now where gender discrimination has become less and less of an issue (in America and Europe anyways?)

Also why are more women in the biological sciences and less in the hard science and engineering fields? Like can you claim discrimination occurs in one while discrimination is nonexistent in the other?
PoliticsRe: More Black Male In Jail In America by SEFAGO(m): 12:38am On Feb 12, 2011
Does it say what areas the doctorates are in? I was only countering your claim with regard to science.

I don't mean to deny that psychology, literature, etc. would see African American men getting trounced by the females, but when you look around for African American scientists, its overwhelmingly men, really.
No thats why I said that was the best I could find. However, I had a source which I closed- that indicated that a recent survey showed as far back as 2000 that half of the PhDs in Mathematics were awarded to black women. I would wager that the number has significantly increased.

http://www.jstor.org/stable/3134128?seq=2

You're not going to find any. Most of the African American scientists and researchers are and will continue to be men, it's just that their ratio is not as lopsided as other groups because the men are slacking to some degree in pursuing those fields.
Currently yes. But more Black women are enrolling in doctoral programs. How do I know this- well at first it was more anecdotal and from skimming through research groups at various universities. When you see a black face its bound to be a girl/woman.

In terms of whether they are more represented in the social sciences/humanities relative to the STEM field there is no current proof- which I am sure you would be unable to provide yourself- that the distribution of black men in STEM is larger than that of women except of course anecdotes.

Also what field are you talking about- dont forget that the number of blacks getting Physics and Chemistry Phds are really small. I know for Physics men outnumber women but for chemistry/biology/engineering this is not the case.

Spelman college is the second most common baccalaureate origin for most blacks getting PhDs. This is after Howard.

Hmm there isn't much data. The best I could find was this:

The Gender Gap in Black Ph.D. Awards

As is the case in almost every measure of African-American achievement in higher education, black women have come to hold a large lead in doctoral awards. As recently as 1977 black women earned only 38.7 percent of all doctorates awarded to African Americans. By 2000 black women earned 65.7 percent of all doctorates awarded to African Americans. There have been only minor fluctuations since the beginning of the century. In 2006 black women earned 65 percent of all doctorates awarded to African Americans.

Since 1990 African-American women have increased their number of Ph.D. awards from 550 to 1,079. This is an increase of 96 percent. In contrast, the number of Ph.D. awards to African-American men increased from 351 in 1990 to 580. This is a rise of 65.5 percent.

Na waoo, How many black people are in finland.
Well u figure. Anyways there are reasons why so many black men are in jail and this has been extensively discussed. I personally prefer to watch p/o/rn than elaborate on this.

Which Ph.D's? I don't think that's actually true. Maybe more African American women in undergrad, but I'm skeptical of this Ph.D claim. If you actually try to look up African American (non-African, non-Carribean, etc) professors or find African American researchers at companies, you mostly see men, so I don't know how true this could be.
Hold on, searching for evidence.
Lol, are men actually smarter? Or do the smart men just have bigger egos and more pride than the smart women, which drives them to compete and go to unusual lengths to prove their smartness? I would take this view.
Ego does play a role. But:

The analyses of more than 20,000 verbal reasoning tests taken by university students from around the world revealed that women's IQs are up to five points lower than men's .

No she doesn't/ isnt. She states the truth, something you men can't handle.
This is where Oscar Wilde comes in- The truth is rarely pure and simple the way its stated on NL

Of course in Naija it's going to be the reverse. Let me not even get started on the injustice in that country! Esp the part women having to sleep with their professors in order to get a degree.
Personally, I like the status quo. Being a professor in Nigeria is a thankless job and the pay is atrocious. What better way to get paid than demand fresh young kitten each semester?

True. For some of the engineering courses I took, there were more black women than men. In most of my classes, there are more women over all than men. I hope I'm not the only one noticing this trend; more women are going to school than men. It's only about time women start having more power than men.
Thats in florida. In Florida nearly all the black men are in jail. Thats a FACT haha. Honestly though in America women are now more common in classrooms than men regardless of race except in quantitative fields like Engineering and science. However, in other sane parts of the world women are not at the same level as men. While its quite interesting that women will be able to attain the same level of success if given the opportunity, I personally prefer the latter case in which we men are the dominant sex in education and control everything. No need letting someone so damn emotional in the classroom or workplace.

Anyways I would put this down to focus. Most women are more focussed than men. However Men are smarter in terms of IQ. So women are hardworkers while men are smarter.

I definitely prefer to be smarter.

PoliticsRe: For A Country That Does Not Have Much Resources, Uk Is A Rich Country. How ? by SEFAGO(m): 10:38pm On Feb 11, 2011
it is about how much countries make from crude oil whatever the currency. Nigeria is only concerned about the extraction of crude, however the main profit from the by products of crude oil which are Petroleum, diesel, kerosene etc
From a barrel of Bonny ligh crude after refining you can get a 73 ltrs of Petrol, 40 litles of diesel amongst others. In the UK the current avg price of petrol and diesel is £1.25 so the selling price on a barrel for both is £141.25 of which £82.49 is TAX
Right, my bad. You are actually correct. Dont blame me though its was the way it was written but yeah you are 100% correct in this regards. We could optimize our profits if we decided to develop and sell all the byproducts obtained from refining.

It was Jenifa_ that was talking about forex. Jenifa reminds me of someone though . . .hmm anyways

So you point is that more finished products cost more than just selling of raw materials. You must of course consider process costs which could lessen profits. You just used the value of the products without considering the fact that to reach these final products might require some costs.
One of the reasons why we refuse to grow as a country is that people are unwilling to learn. If you point out why western countries are progressing, people say you are pandering to Oyibo. Meanwhile we go backwards while oyibo goes forward.
Agree with most of what you said

TravelRe: Why Don't Nigerians Tip? Why Do You Pay For Good Service? by SEFAGO(m): 10:02pm On Feb 11, 2011
@Ajanlekoko

There is a big reason why tipping is very important in America. Tips are sometimes the salary of most people. They could be paying the people minimum wage and then most of the money they get would depend on the tip of the customers. So basically not tipping is like you are not paying the salary of the person who served you grin. Imagine if your boss decided to withhold salary indefinitely you too go frown now.

However, I think Nigerians tip and its kind of in our culture. However the tips are an incentive to build favor or to show that we are a big Man. The tips in the west is courtesy- to show that you appreciate and respect the service of the person serving you. I kind of prefer the Nigerian one too- you get something from it, while you get nothing in the west.

No he did not, but he had a high 2:1 though and he had like a 1480 in his GRE. Thats all straight from university. I think he already got into one of the large state universities which are top notch in engineering. The issue though was that the Mechanical Engineering Department at Princeton has a Nigerian professor who seems to take on a lot of Nigerian students (he might likely be on the admission committee) and so I think if you apply to Mech Eng your chances are exponentially better.

Sorry for giving you hypertension oooh. Now I kind of feel even more that you deserve it. We were just chatting on facebook, and i thot about this thread.

Yeah engineering actually is kind of weird. In other fields chemistry/physics you hear like 3-4 weeks after applying especially if you are American. If you are international, then it might take a lot of time but you should have results by end of january. If nothing yawa don burst or as my friend Lagbaja succinctly put it "Nothing for you"

However Princeton mass mails all decisions for their departments, they dont have rolling admissions except you get off a waitlist. So you will likely hear early maybe in the next two weeks maximum from Pton hopefully with positive results.

Then you will pop a bottle of champagne for all of us.
EducationRe: Preparing for GRE by SEFAGO(m): 7:24am On Feb 11, 2011
Hey cezozue

From one of my friends in unilag, I heard that Princetons Mechanical Engineering results just came out today- they mass mailed admissions on the 11th of February.

Come March/April your problem would be deciding which scholarship(RA/TA) to finally accept
Some of those schools notable Stanford and Princeton dont give RA/TA but they give you a fellowship for your first year so you dont need to teach or do research under a professor and you could just focus on your education. you can now join a research group after the first year. This of course varies depending on the department.

Caltech is hard because they probably dont waive the research requirement. Also some departments at Caltech are difficult to get into for foreigners especially Mech Eng.

Goodluck!!!

Read - Reread- Read - Reread, but I still dont understand this foreign exchange argument
Nigeria's main export is crude oil and we export about 2.5m barrels a day. This sells today for $85 a barrell which is about £54

Ok, I reread this again. I would be frank this is totally daft. To quote the Americans "Bullshit", the brits "bollocks" and the French "Connerie"

Yes Nigeria sells her crude oil but I think Britain will see the crude oil at the same market price if they are the same grade. Wouldn't Nigeria be selling oil to whoever at the same price as the UK, and receiving the money in foreign exchange and not naira? I think our crude account is even in foreign currency to prevent any depression that can be due to forex fluctuations.

Tourism and visitors. Everyday about 5 flights (maybe more) leave Nigeria for the united kingdom. These flights carry about 400 passengers. If we conservatively say that each passenger spends about a £1,000. That is £200,000 a day. a year its £73m from Nigeria alone. in 2005 the UK made £14bn from tourism alone
Crap, who told you a passenger spends 1000 pounds each trip even including ticket? Have you factored in that most of these people might be UK citizens and make their money in the UK? A total estimate- which you have provided anyways- gives an idea of how much comes in through tourism.

I agree though we waste money going to all these western countries shopping for crap. Wetin dey UK that you really cannot make in naija?

I always feel that western countries (and now China) are paying chicken change for our oil and natural resources due to the currency exchange rates which is totally unequal. western countries should be paying the full worth of the oil they are buying from us.
Crap, they are not really paying chicken change really. Moreover, the Chinese usually aim to purchase oil blocs especially through CNOOC and Sinopec, and are definitely not cheating Nigeria significantly. Maybe a bit though because the people in NNPC are dullards. grin

I think the resources are sold at the current market price which trust me Nigerians would be able to figure out we are not dullards. However, when selling resource blocks to companies, this might be an issue since one has to prove the total amount of reserves to evaluate how much a bloc could be worth. I might be wrong- totally clueless about evaluating or pricing of minerals, crude oil etc.

Disturbingly, instead of the Nigerian government using all the oil proceeds to fund a multinational with majority shareholding being controlled by the government which could later purchase stakes in other countries such as petrobras. What a waste!!!

Americana you are not making sense!!!

The best step approach for such an analysis would be to provide economic data the source of UK's GDP and then identifying each part. Anyways the large majority would probably be due to services and finance. London being the most important financial hub for the whole of EU followed probably by Zurich- too lazy to check. Then you have tons of MNC owned by the Brits stealing money from the third world lol.

Is it only Nigerians? Chinese, Indians, Lebanese, Bulagarians, Lithuanians all try and move away from their country to live in the "West"

Migration is happening so frequently in this world because of the globalization that the West started- people want the opportunities they see and hear about in the media and they believe that they can only find those opportunities in the West. There would be no migration if the West had not attempted to

If, I had been born in precolonial Africa, I would be quite happy with my own farm, in some deep village in Yorubaland harvesting my cocoyams and marrying multiple wives, happy with my existence and fighting numerous wars across Yorubaland and become renowned as a great Oyo warrior oblivious of Western civilization with no need to leave my environs for anywhere.

What you see is the domino effect of what the West started. The suffering in Nigeria did not start until the West in all their arrogance felt it fit that the world had to follow their system. An attempt to bring Western civilization into a system that already worked is what has led to the issues that has afflicted Africa for years. Africa's 20+ year integration into the global economy with no real support is the root of our problems.

So yes, I thoroughly support all Nigerians looking for greener pastures abroad especially in the West. When you start something get ready for the repercussions.

OKAY, YOUR POINT IS THAT BLACKS ARE SUPPRESSED IN SOUTH AFRICA. I CONCUR. BUT IT MAKES ME TO WONDER WHY THE SO ESTABLISHED NIGERIAN MIDDLE CLASS FIND IT BETTER TO MIGRATE TO SOUTH AFRICA THAN STAY IN NIGERIA WHERE THEY HAVE MORE SAY AND POWER? OR ARE THESE NIGERIAN MIDDLE CLASS WHITES?
Statistics on this? How many comfortable middle class Nigerians are packing for SA and leaving their jobs to hustle? Not the UK or US but South Africa.

You might as well make fun of the French people, Indians, Lebanese and e.t.c who move happily to Nigeria to partake in business and seek employment albeit in MNC and companies established by the countrymen.

You probably mean Young Nigerian boys leave for SA to hustle? Yeah well if something does not work for you somewhere, then moving somewhere is not really a bad idea. In a "global village" we have the right to take part in the international job market even if its the drug market in SA  grin

The most salient fact is that  you would no be allowed to partake anyways in whatever the brits develop. You will only be able to be a spectator like most Africans in Colonial Africa.

ONE THING THAT I KNOW FOR SURE IS THAT NIGERIANS WOULD HAVE ALL THE BASIC INFRASTRUCTURES, MORE INTERNATIONAL REGARD AND A BETTER IMAGE IF THE BRITISH WERE STILL IN CONTROL. I ALSO KNOW THAT NIGERIANS WOULD HAVE LESS POVERTY BECAUSE EVEN THE POOR WOULD HAVE JOBS, AND NIGERIA WOULD HAVE BEEN A MEGA DEVELOPED NATION, WITH ALL THESE WASTED RESOURCES THAT NIGERIAN LEADERS HAVE PLUNDERED.
Yeah right you know this because . . . ?? You seem to know a lot of things. Do have like a paradigm for your argument? Resources does not directly mean much really. Thats what people dont get- its not about resources or finished products its all about innovation and competitive advantage.

NIGERIA IS NOT ZIMBABWE, WE HAVE MORE RESOURCES THAN SOUTH AFRICA. SO IMAGINE WHAT THEY WOULD DO WITH NIGERIA IF THEY HAD THE CHANCE TO LEAD IT?
Yeah imagine how happy the UK would have been to be able to directly control Nigeria's oil profits. Imagine how their currently under-performing economy would be doing unlimited cash flow from their African operations. Imagine how the British Citizens would be enjoying OUR MONEY based on the sorrow, tears and blood of the people in the ND.

Nice  grin.

And they would be under no obligation to develop Nigeria anyways  grin, and British people become Nigerian- yeah maybe but would they want economic parity?
