Protesting Lagosians Pledge Support For Fashola • Say Assembly Not Fit To Probe Gov • Nobody Can Stop Us – Speaker By Akinwunmi King and Ekene Okoro, Lagos Former Federal Capital Territory Minister, Jeremiah Useni (left); former General Officer Commanding 2nd Mechanised Division of the Army, Joshua Dongoyaro; and National Security Adviser, Sarki Muktar; at the meeting of Plateau State leaders with Vice President Goodluck Jonathan at the Villa in Abuja , on Monday. Photos: Tunde Olaniyi. THOUSANDS of Lagosians, from the city centre and from the outskirts, all dressed in black – and carrying placards and banners – marched on the streets on Monday to express support for Governor Babatunde Fashola, who is under threat of impeachment by the state House of Assembly. He faces allegations of financial misappropriation, charges said to be trumped up by his adversaries, backed by former Governor Bola Tinubu. The rally, which took off at Adebola House in Ikeja, comprised members of Coalition of Youths for Good Governance (CYGG), Movement for Good Governance (MGG), Lovers of Raji Fashola (LORAFASH). There were women and youths, as well as members of the crippled association. Their action was sparked off by an advertorial in The Punch of January 28, stating allegations of financial malpractices by Fashola and his cabinet, which prompted lawmakers to set up a panel of six members to investigate the charges. The groups made a first stop at the Assembly to register their displeasure with Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji, saying the legislators are not qualified to probe the allegations, since they are also accused of collecting N20 million each from Fashola. Some of the placards read: “Don’t tamper with the Lord’s Chosen,” “Don’t destroy the gains of continuity,” “Eko o ni gba igba kugba (Lagos won’t accept rubbish),” “We shall not succumb to the orchestrated campaign of calumny,” “No controversy Speaker, Fashola is our man,” “We know who are Lagosians,” “Distraction causes destruction,” “House of Assembly, don’t distract our Governor.” Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Abiodun Olugbenro, a Bishop, said the groups took to the streets to express their support for Fashola and his quest to change the face of the state. “We decided to come to the House of Assembly to ask from (Ikuforiji) that if really they want to do any investigation, why can’t they start from themselves? The publication accused (Fashola) wrongly. It accused the lawmakers too, but they decided to set up a kangaroo Committee to investigate (him). “What we are telling them is that we know that our Governor is a transparent man. They too should face the panel. We are here to tell the Governor that we are behind him,” Olugbenro said. Ikuforiji told the protesters that the probe would proceed, however. He denied that the intention is to impeach Fashola. His words: “There is nothing like impeachment move in the House. This House is for 18 million Lagosians and we will defend the interest of all. "The truth is that we read in the publication where some people alleged that the House has collected money from (Fashola) and that he has done many bad things. “What we are saying is that if anyone accuses the House and our Governor, this House will investigate it in the interest of everybody. We will make the investigation public for everybody to see. All we are interested in is to clear the name of the House and that of (Fashola). “We know what to do, as the defender of democracy, it is the right of the House to look into the allegations – and if you so desire, the House will make that investigation a public one for everybody to witness it. Nobody can harass the House not to do its job. “All we are interested in is to clear the name of the House. All we are interested in is to clear the name of (Fashola). “No matter how highly placed a person is, that person cannot stop us from doing our job. I want to assure you that we will go ahead with the investigation.” The protesters reacted by shouting and raining abuses on the legislators, and went up to the Governor’s Office in Ikeja, where, speaking on behalf of voters in the state, Olufemi Odusanya expressed support for Fashola, saying Lagos is better off with his administration. “We must put a stop to it because if we don’t, it can snowball into another thing. We are voters, we have seen the environmental beautification you are doing and other things, and we don’t want anybody to come and disrupt Lagos for us. “Basically we are here to tell you that we are solidly behind you and we will stand beside you for the peace, development and goodness of the people of Lagos State”, Odusanya said. Fashola had earlier reiterated in television broadcast that there is no need for the rally, as there is no contest between himself and Tinubu. He attributed the feud to the work of fifth columnists, adding that the press has been unfair to Tinubu, without who he (Fashola) would not have become Governor. He told the protesters: “My obligation is to do the best I can with my colleagues to protect all of you from harm; nobody’s life is worth this office to me. "I am therefore renewing my appeal to you that the rally in my support is not necessary. "I reiterate my words in the broadcast, and I renew my appeal to you, as much as I appreciate your concern." He noted that the unrest has not been helped by the fact that after nearly 50 years of independence, Nigeria is yet to witness a successful transfer of power. “The truth is that our country is where it is today because in all of 50 years, we have never had a successful transfer of power. "This model that we have in Lagos is proving successful, and because there are no previous successes, there is no precedent to turn to. We must therefore all learn new rules and we must also learn compromise.” He also appealed to the protesters to remain calm, saying the Assembly is also working in consonance with the executive to move the state forward. “Let us understand that the (lawmakers) were elected by you in the same way you elected me. And I assure you that they are also as concerned as you are and they would act always in your best interest. “Do not allow fifth columnists to destroy what all of you have laboured to build. The lawmakers and I have no other place to go other than Lagos. I appeal to you once again to remain calm, it is well. Keep the peace because we need the peace to continue to do what you elected us to do.” http://independentngonline.com/DailyIndependent/Article.aspx?id=7842 |

I have just discovered something about users of Nairaland. Some people are really full of themselves, and they think they know all. This thread has opened my eyes to a particular tribe and persons, who hide behind the computer, to execute tribalism. Once I had engaged myself in it, and later repented, but some are fully sunk into it, and when issues are turned against them, they foolishly talk about a person acting as a multiple user. In Nigeria today, how many people have Laptops, talk less about being connected to internet. The cheapest 24 hours connection is from MTN and is N8,500. Let me tell you, that is someone's salary for a whole month. When you see two or more persons using one IP add, does it mean that there is one multiple user? Have you asked yourself, are they not in a cafe sort of, or some where?. Some people really needs to be re-oriented. For the fact that an argument is not going your way, does not mean you should apply cheap blackmail. The same user that brought this up, is doing the same on another thread here. Well, I see he got his match there, anyway. Tribalism should not be applied when discussing issues. There is no perfect tribe anywhere in the world. A tribe will always have a comparative advantage over the other, not necessarily meaning, the tribe is better than the other. If indeed, Nairaland users are educated, then, they should put it into use, and stop tribal assassination, please!. |
na2day?:You must be frank about what you want, if indeed you do not have an interior motive. I received more than 50 mails, because of this thread. I am really better now. If I have my way, I will edit this topic, to suit my current knowledge. |

Abagworo:Nigerian masses are too scared!. Until they take the bull by the horn, just like what they did to IBB in 1993, it will same-of-the-same. |

…Senators, Reps promised automatic tickets •Governors shortlist five for VP By Olusola Balogun Sunday, January 24, 2010 Unyielding loyalists of ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua have begun moves to secure the support of members of the National Assembly in their quest to ensure the status quo remains. This followed the disquiet in the Presidency over the reported move by senators said to be compiling signatures as a prelude to commencing impeachment process against Yar’Adua, who has been absent from the country 62 days. As part of the carrot dangled before the lawmakers, the loyalists of the President have reportedly offered them automatic return tickets so that they would not rock the boat. Sunday Sun also learnt that the Presidency hawks have perfected plans to infiltrate the ranks of those rooting for the swearing in of Vice President Goodluck Jonathan as acting President with the aim of whittling down their influence. The loyalists, who have vowed to stall every move that would lead to Jonathan’s emergence as acting president, have also set up three groups to carry out their plans. The groups are said to be headed by the Chief Economic Adviser to the President, Yakubu Tanimu; Minister of National Planning, Shamsudeen Usman; Special Adviser on National Assembly, Senator Mohammed Abba-Aji while Yar’Adua’s Chief Political Adviser, Senator Polycarp Nwite, is to function as coordinator. Sunday Sun source claimed that this group frustrated the plan by some senators to get the Senate to move a motion to send a team to Saudi Arabia during the discussion on the president’s state of health. “The resolution that the Senate will invite the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) to brief it on the condition of the president was regarded as an initial victory and signs of good things to come,” the source said. Another source claimed that the pro-Yar’Adua group was also responsible for stalling former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s plan to get members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees to support Jonathan to act for Yar’Adua. Obasanjo, who is the BOT chairman, was said to have left the venue of the meeting disappointed as majority of the members opposed his recommendation that Jonathan should be asked to take over. Sources at the meeting said the resistance was based on the belief that it would be “politically dangerous” if both Jonathan and the Senate President, David Mark, were allowed to handle such important positions in government. The twosome are believed to be staunch loyalists of Obasanjo as the former President was instrumental to the emergence of Jonathan as governor of Bayelsa State as well as vice president while it is also believed that Mark’s loyalty to Obasanjo is unshaken. The loyalists believe that with Jonathan and Mark, Obasanjo will virtually return to power having lost clout within the party and even in the Presidency. Besides, the fear of the Yar’Adua loyalists is that the Jonathan/Mark scenario will crush the structure they had already built. Sunday Sun further learnt that apart from other pecuniary inducements to the federal lawmakers to steer clear of the Jonathan matter, recalcitrant principal officers who still have election cases or issues bordering on corruption are now being blackmailed with them. Our source claimed that Tanimu, Usman and Abba-Aji infiltrated a meeting of northern Senators held on January 11 and got an assurance that the matter would not be discussed on the floor of the Senate the following day. Similarly, Usman was said to have had a closed-door meeting with the House of Representatives Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, on how to paddle the ‘Yar’Adua canoe’ to safety. Consequently, while the Senate had an open plenary, the House arranged a closed-door session, which outcome, the leadership of the latter could not transmit to the public because of what a House source described as the divergent opinions held by members of opposition parties. He said while members of the opposition parties maintained that Yar’Adua should be asked to transfer powers to Jonathan, the PDP members favoured sending a delegation to Saudi Arabia to verify the state of health of the President, in the belief that it could be used to buy time for the ailing President. However, Minority Whip and leader of the Action Congress (AC) in the House, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, later revealed part of what transpired at the executive session, which drew the ire of the leadership. Gbajabiamila’s address to the press was said to have rattled Yar’Adua’s men. But, in the face of the desperate moves by the Presidency hawks, governors elected on the platform of the PDP have decided to pick one of their own as vice president in the event of Jonathan becoming acting president. It was learnt that five governors - Danjuma Goje (Gombe State), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina), Babangida Aliyu (Niger) and Sule Lamido of Jigawa along with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Adamu Aliero - were picked as nominees. The source revealed that Goje was favoured by majority of his colleagues while Shema came second because of the sentiment that he is from the same state as Yar’Adua. Said a source: “The action of the governors is a clear signal that they are no longer comfortable with the story that Yar’Adua was responding to treatment and will soon be back to office.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2010/jan/24/national-24-01-2010-02.htm |
