Stars gather to cover 'We Are the World' for Haiti
By SOLVEJ SCHOU, For The Associated Press – Tue Feb 2, 1:43 am ET
LOS ANGELES – More than 75 mega-stars gathered Monday to re-record the 1985 charity anthem "We are the World" in the same Hollywood recording studio where the original was cut 25 years ago.

Pink, Celine Dion, Natalie Cole, the Jonas Brothers, Kanye West, Tony Bennett, Jennifer Hudson, Akon and other musical luminaries stood shoulder to shoulder on risers at Henson Recording studios, singing their hearts out and hoping to help Haiti.

At one point during the session, the musicians broke out into an a cappella version of the pop classic "Lean on Me."

True to her diva reputation, Barbara Streisand recorded her solo over and over, completely absorbed in the recording process and stopping only to correct her pitch.

Rapper Lil' Wayne was told he would do Bob Dylan's part in the original song. "I said, 'Are you kidding?'" he said. He felt blessed to record the song but admitted, "I don't know how to sing." Asked how the earthquake had affected him, he said he had Haitian friends in Miami who lost relatives in the disaster. "I think it's amazing what's been done for Haiti, but I think it's amazing what hasn't been done for New Orleans," said the Crescent City native.

Quincy Jones, who produced the 1985 anthem, announced last week that he planned to redo the song to benefit recovery from the deadly Jan. 12 earthquake in Port-au-Prince.

Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, the original "We Are the World" thundered up the charts when it was released on the radio and in record stores in March 1985.

An unprecedented number of top pop musicians gathered at A&M the night of Jan. 28, 1985, following the American Music Awards, to record the tune. The song featured 45 American superstars, including Jackson, Richie, Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Diana Ross, Bob Dylan and Cyndi Lauper. None of the original performers returned for the re-record. The 1985 record raised more than $30 million for USA for Africa, a nonprofit organization founded by the singers to fund hunger relief in African nations.

While reporters watched a video feed of the session in a nearby room, stars like West mingled outside with friends and greeted his buddy, Snoop Dogg, with a hug.

Nicole Richie and "Good Charlotte" singer Joel Madden showed up with their 2-year-old daughter Harlow, whom Madden bounced in his arms to the beat of the music.

Julianne Hough from "Dancing with the Stars," who is also a country singer, said she felt honored to lend her voice to the effort and sing next to so many talented musicians.

"It's just iconic. Celine (Dion) is just so gracious and amazing and such a pro," she said.

Luckily for me, I told a friend and he was like 'that thing na just hype and e no dey work jare, get Damatol medicated sulphur-based hair ointment instead. Next day I skinned my hair, bought the damatol ointment and applied it to my scalp and in about a week my dandruff was gone. Funny thing is the damatol cost me just N80 then while the yeye head & shoulders anti-dandruff shampoo cost me a few hundred bucks.
Lesson learnt- some of these oyinbo products na just hype and ain't always the best, lol.

Na only that one? CAF is so archaic. . . . .it still beats me why an Algeria that scored only 1 goal should be allowed to qualify ahead of a Mali that scored 7 goals. . . . they call it head to head but it's nonsense to me. Rules should be made and adopted to encourage attacking football IMO.

Guys, i think we should look at this Chukka Okaka of Roma, that guy looks to me a good striker, big, strong, firm, fast, skillful and good in the air, is he not eligible for the SE?
Lol. . . . .Both Nedum and Okaka are very eligible to play for Nigeria. However, Nedum has said he wants to represent England at the Senior level (I recall he still said so in an interview late last year around early December after our qualification for SA 2010). . . . He's still young so he figures he can wait some few more years (definitely not going to SA 2010 with England), that na why im dey do shakara. As for Stefano. . . . . he had better learn from Balotelli's experience with Italy and accept an invitation with open hands when and if he's invited to play for Nigeria. There must be a serious dearth of players in a particular position before Italians will field a black in their team. E go tey before black person go play for Italo. . . . Even Balotelli realizes this and don dey take style dey change mouth now. . . . .which player no wan go world cup? grin tongue

I can't understand why players like Nedum Onuoha and Stefano Okaka need to be begged to play for SE? They are no where near the national teams of their 2nd countries and surely at least Anichebe's silver medal should be an inspiration for them.

Okaka is the sort of target man we need in the SE if we would still play 4-5-1 in the world cup ( Given that Amodu remains coach). Even though he lacks goals, he can do a Heskey for I. Uche and Odemwingie to pounce.
If these players are going to ever play for Nigeria, this is the time particularly with the lure of the world cup. . . . . Stefano Chuka Okaka is a good prospect. . .  He's got a huge imposing physique and he could definitely hold up play for the team upfront and create chances for our other strikers. . . . Anyway, he has just joined Fulham today on loan so he'll definitely be in the spotlight and radar of our coach (who ever it may be).

Nedum Onuoha on the other hand is an utility defender who can play anywhere in defence from central defence (his preferred position), right-back and left-back. However, I don't think we need him that much cos we've got some1 in that mold in Chibuzor Okonkwo. The only thing Onuoha has over Chibuzor is speed. . . .dude can run and is f.cucking fast

HAYATOU MUST LEAVE CAF NOW          http://www.kickoff.com/static/features/article.php?id=13675
Posted: 2010-02-01 09:32 by Tiyani wa ka Mabasa
CAF President Issa Hayatou was apparently good in basketball; so good he was a member of the Cameroon national basketball team for the first All Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo in 1965. And that’s where he should have remained.

I wrote this an angry man in the middle of the night after the Togolese national team was banned from the next two Africa Cup of Nations editions (2012 and 2014), and were fined a massive $50 000.

Their fault; their bus was attacked by a terrorist group called Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC) and their government pulled the team out of the tournament. It was “government interference” that CAF took into consideration when banning Emmanuel Adebayor and company from the next two Afcons.

What kind of leader is this? That you get shot at and you get a ban and a massive fine.

Hayatou’s decisions always baffle the mind. There are exceptions to every rule and Togo is. People’s lives are more important that some rule book gathering dust somewhere.

A few days ago, he said he “did not want the Nations Cup to be played in the same year as the World Cup or the European Championship, but that the event would remain in January”.

The January issue has for some time been affecting lots of African players at European teams.

The fact is these players earn a fortune from these teams. In fact, from what they make from winning an Afcon is what some earn in a week at their European clubs.

Portsmouth coach Avram Grant was quoted saying before the Afcon that: “I don’t know why Fifa allow this. I don’t know why they have the African Cup of Nations in January. We pay a lot of money, especially the big teams, to players who are not with you for two months. I think Fifa need to think about this.”

Hayatou, in turn, says: “We will do things the African way; we won’t be pushed into changing the Afcon dates.”

Good leaders are not arrogant. Take the Togo decision and the Afcon dates issue ,  is Hayatou a good leader?

Anyway, he is remembered for having fallen asleep during a World Cup match in France 1998, which was picked up by television cameras.

If it is basketball you love Mr Hayatou, it is not too late to change. You are only 63 years old and Fifa President Sepp Blatter is 73, therefore you still have a decade or more to make your mark in Basketball administration.

ADEBAYOR SLAMS TOGO BAN http://www.kickoff.com/static/news/article.php?id=13667
Posted: 2010-01-31 20:16 by Colin Udoh

Confederation of African Football President Issa Hayatou should resign following the ‘monstrous’ decision to ban Togo from the next two African Nations Cups, captain Emmanuel Adebayor said yesterday.

Togo quit the tournament when their government recalled the team for three days of mourning, after two members of their delegation were killed in an attack by gunmen in the northern Angolan province of Cabinda on January 8.

CAF banned Togo and fined their soccer association R400 000 on Saturday because their government had interfered in football matters.

“Mr Hayatou did serve Africa but today he must clear off. This decision is monstrous,” Adebayor told French sports daily L’Equipe.“ He is irresponsible. I have the feeling we are not respected.”

Togo Sports Minister Christophe Tchao told Reuters by telephone on Saturday that they would appeal the CAF ban.

An assistant coach and a media officer with the Togo team died in the ambush as the team travelled from Pointe Noire, Congo to the Angolan capital by bus for their opening match.

“Two well respected personalities in African football died, our keeper took three bullets. We did not just wake up in the morning and decide to leave the competition,” Adebayor said.

“If [Cameroon keeper Idriss Carlos] Kameni was the one having been shot or if it was the Ivory Coast team bus that had been attacked, the Nations Cup would have been cancelled.”

The Manchester City striker said the attack, which lasted at least 20 minutes, was still fresh in his memory. “It is very difficult [to think of football]. Since the attack, I have been having nightmares every night,” he said.

@ topic
I doubt the bolded part. . . . .Adebayo dey talk trash at times. . . . . . . . .but still I maintain it was a bad decision by CAF.

The gibberish you posted ain't worth posting a reply to. I'll be belittling my self by debating soccer tactics with you. Just humour me and post your 23-man list to take to the world cup and your starting 11 against Argentina. I feel like having a good laugh. grin wink

ow11:
Osanga is a winger and there is a serious dearth of 'headmasters' in the SE. I mean the two headers I saw in the CAN were awful (Shittu and Nsofor). Who would be at the end of those crosses? It makes no sense taking a player whose abilities can't fit with the rest of the team.
Good Point!

Is Rabiu Ibrahim a better midfielder than Josiah Maduabuchi?
Difficult question. . . . On a skill & creativity level, it's hard to say who is better. International exposure to competitions (U-17 and U-21) and probably better training gives Rabiu the edge IMO. grin wink
