The curiosity I was birthed with was something worthy of note. My biological mother usually told me I questioned literally everything when I was an infant. This, she said to me when I unveiled my atheism in a very religious setting. Mumsy was a pastor. Granny I lived with when I was at the boarding school was faith-believing. So was my aunt I spent many year with. Yet, I questioned literally everything. This hasn’t stopped and I don’t think it will anytime soon. Which is why I am fancying the idea of majoring in sociology to better understand from an intellectual context, how humans think. Just months ago, fierce protests were held as to the increment of fees in Delta State University. Some student I had privately tutored were back home claiming students were united in the struggle and had all agreed to not attend lectures until the demands of their protests was tended. I said zilch. Just observed. Although I mildly commented given my experience, that the management of the university were very tactical and know how to utilize the divide and rule strategy very well; select a few popular students, course reps, department heads etc, make juicy offers and the protests will be sabotaged. One of their loudest comrades was vituperating making posts after posts in vehement opposition to the fee increment. I was just laughing because we have a history and I could see through his pretext of a complain. At some point, he was doing too much I was forced to send him a message privately telling him to chill. He called from the UK immediately he got my message demanding an explanation. I threw more light albeit not expecting him to get it. I’ve always known these people to think politics a ‘game’. The selection of leaders who will determine the quality of your short life and that of your compatriots by a mile is a game? The way African politics is run ehn, professor Lumumba describes it well. Anyway, I read from same ‘comrade’ applauding and praising Governor Ifeanyi A. Okowa yesterday o. Same Okowa he criticized months ago for school fee increment was now a political demigod worthy of emulating. He even used the word ‘game’. And he won’t be the only one doing this. I have read from many accounts that vehemently condemned the delta state government over that fee increment now applauding Okowa’s tenacity and tactfulness. I cannot be ashamed to originate from the same geographical location as these lots as it was of no choosing of mine. My inquisitiveness still asks the questions as to what I am doing in this country. I mean, you just criticized the man’s nonchalant and lackadaisical attitude towards the plight of delta state students, some of who are from your village that is lacking in road, water, light, and other necessary basics. I mean, the same person who’s been on seat and laws have been made that has further toughened the lives of an average deltan, I mean, issues has been raised to the unaffordability of housing for the common man with homeless people littered nearly every nook and cranny of the state’s capital, I mean kids well under 18 were being bundled into a police van for loitering in front of shoprite (eyewitness account), because that’s where they beg, eat, sleep. No school, nothing. Yet, for a VP ticket, the man is automatically a messiah? The irony in all this is I know and understand this ‘game’ very well. I didn’t even attempt to play it in the university but I learned how it was played and that is the sick foundation set by these ‘comrades’. For them, it is a matter of the baton being handed down to them when their time is right. And they do not care whether or not Nigeria loses in these games. Peter Obi is not about the game. He is the game, and regardless of my state of origin, my choice aligns with competence. This was why I aligned myself with the G8 when they suggested voluntary colonialism. I do not care where a person is from or what they look like. If they can competently and efficiently do the job, give them the job!!! Peter Obi’s track record, interviews, portfolio etc has shown a man who not only can do the job, but can do it well. Give the man the job!

Despite the fact the age of consent globally keeps dropping and even countries among the G7 like Japan for example, having an age of consent as low as 13 (Nigeria is the lowest worldwide at 11), I still maintain that children should remain children. Whatever fast development, exposure and etc will not influence the aftermath of being exposed to sex early. This usually results in hypersexuality, unwanted pregnancy and etc. which in the long run, won’t do any child any good. This is why I always argue about the negatives of early exposure to the use of internet enabled devices, social media and tv unsupervised and not regulated. The 10 years old girl and her peers in the trending Chrisland video is one of many and this is only a hot topic because it came into light. I know how many sexual abuse related cases I’ve had to handle as a teacher and as a rights activist. A story broke out recently of junior secondary school girls who were stopping by at short time hotels after school. This crazy world of uncontrolled sexual orgies is dragging kids along. Too many sexually related content from comedy skits to TikTok videos and instagram and while gadgets may be purchased for these kids by their parents/caregiver for studying, online classes and etc (since COVID), they tend to use it for other means as most of them are barely supervised. This exposes them to content they are most likely unprepared for and would worsen their puberty struggle, heightening the urge to want to engage and practice, hence, taken advantage of. The boys in that video knew well to use the trick of truth or dare and the girl was foolish to fall for it. Now, this patriarchal society is subjecting only the girl to the receiving end of the sticks. Only the girl’s mother has had to make a video to address same. We don’t know who raised those boys. Only the girl is trending, very few persons are talking about the boy. Only the girl’s indefinite suspension letter was made public. Only the girl is being condemned. Only her is being recommended for counseling and rehabilitation. Only her life is ruined. Not the boys who are equally around her age and too young to be engaged in such. Not one of them. I tell girls that the societal expectations is usually at their expense and while we may push for gender equality and parity, the crowd would always box them into a corner. From all trending abuse cases, only a few victims’ name gets to be mentioned. Many times, it is what the girl was doing, wearing, saying, acting etc that got her there. Again, parenting is not bean cake especially in this generation with the advent of social media and the likes. It is unthinkable what is contained all over the net. One can raise their child right and still have them corrupted by an improperly raised one as friend, neighbor, colleague or classmate. I’d had my freedom since a very young age. It was alien to me when friends were scared to stay out beyond a particular time. I could travel, spend nights and weeks out and do all sort since as young as 15, however, I was consumed with video gaming rather than sexual fantasies and urges like it is now. One can’t go past a sentence even as a teen without talking about ass or breast and you can’t even scold them because these conversations can happen in front of their parents who’d say ’Mr. Daniel, children of nowadays ehn’ and leave it at that. In the end, not very far away, adults will begin to bear the repercussions of their irresponsibilities and lackadaisical attitude towards properly raising their children. The ones with crime and criminal involvement via cultism will be frequenting police holdings and correctional facilities. The ones with unwanted pregnancies will be nursing fatherless/motherless grandkids. It’s a catastrophic disaster and I’m on the side observing. |

The children you failed to raise, to instill moral values upon, to educate, they’ve grown. First, they started out as beggars, then pick pockets, and now these. Children with no values. No parental or family care, support and structure. No one telling them their left from their right. Smoking, engaging in sexual activities, abusing drugs, joining various cult groups to feel among, to protect themselves from constant bullying. They have grown. And they are coming for us all. For our negligence of their welfare. For the times we thought it was not our business to feed, school and raise them right. They are here! With us. All of us. Who is safe? I hate to be a prophet of doom, but more is bound to happen in the coming days. Kaduna’s bomb blast, sporadic shooting and kidnapping of over a thousand persons wouldn’t be the first. Neither would it be the last. There were killing in Sokoto recently too. Our outrage over the girl kidnapped in a state government’s assigned shuttle was yet to wear out when the next tragedy befell us, but the super eagles is in shambles and Wizkid grammy win or Davido’s new lambo is more of our business than people’s lives. Real human beings with loved ones, cut short like they were roaches and life goes on as though it is normal. As though any of this should be normal. Chinelo, a doctor in her prime, shot in the chest and her only resort at the moment was to tweet because twitter is safer and faster than any ambulance, security or healthcare service our nation has been able to provide. It’s been proven, from the days of Umoren Innibong. How safe are you now? With your cars and mountainous duplexes? From the children of perdition? The ones you slammed your doors agains and wound up your car slides, because it was not your business. How safe? I laugh because I’m alive for the moment and will have enough sleep in death and no time to laugh any more. Because I said these things and I will keep on saying it. Children birthed in hopeless situations, grow up to be social vices, lacking morals, compassion and the ability to be humane because all they’ve known for the most of their lives is insecurity, hunger, lack, pain, cruelty. And as people are a sum of their experiences mostly, our fate is left in their hands when they’re handed a gun. This is no poetry. This is our reality. We’re in a very huge pot being cooked by a combination of firewood, gas cookers and ovens. We’re roasting and no one is coming to save us. Stay safe out there
