Education › Alleged N5m Monthly Security Vote Tears Yabatech Apart by Seuncoded(op): 11:19am On Jun 30, 2015

The premises of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, were a beehive of activities last Tuesday. Both the students and members of staff of the school were busy with one activity or another.

At the administrative block, the classrooms, laboratories, the arts department as well as the Yusuf Grillo auditorium in the institution, there were no dull moments.
Beyond this seeming friendly and relaxed environment, however, there were underling matters boiling in the oldest tertiary institution in the country. In fact, at the TETfund multipurpose hall on the campus, some members of the institution’s Governing Council, led by Chief Ebenezer Babatope, and the Rector, Dr. Kudirat Ladipo, were busy trying to extricate themselves from a series of allegations of fraud preferred against them.

The Bursar and the Chief Financial Officer of the 68-year-old polytechnic, Mr. Olu Ibirogba, who is currently on suspension, had accused them, especially the rector, of engaging in corrupt practices.

In a strongly-worded petition to President Muhammadu Buhari and his deputy, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the suspended bursar, on behalf of YABATECH 8, had alleged that several millions of naira had developed wings and flown out of the coffers of the hallowed academic community.

In the petition dated June 10, 2015, entitled ‘Large scale stealing and victimisation by YABATECH authorities: Appeal for intervention so that we are not silenced’, Ibirogba alleged that the rector’s leadership style in the last five years had been characterised by a series of breaches of the Federal Government extant regulations and laws.

According to Ibirogba, the polytechnic has lost no less than N2bn via corruption since the rector came on board in 2009.

Part of the petition read, “The Governing Council approved N5m monthly security vote to the Rector, Dr. Kudirat Ladipo, which is paid to her personal account each month directly.

This is besides the institution’s organic security staff (about 150 personnel), six outsourced security companies, as well as monthly payment of motivational allowances to the Sabo Police Station and DSS staff at Sabo.

“This N5m monthly security vote translates to N60m per annum. Payment of security vote to head of government parastatal is very strange and an indicator of abuse of office and executive fraud.

“Dr. Ladipo also collects about N5m annually for a two-week vacation abroad, including daily allowances of $600 for a trip which she never made.

This is another clear duplication, as all employees in the federal polytechnic, including her, are paid their leave allowances monthly.”

Ibirogba, who also accused the rector of divided loyalty, noted that she has a company, Spicy Nig. Limited, which she uses to execute several jobs in the institution; while she is also engaged in contract splitting as well as an arbitrary employment of workers.

Claiming that as the financial officer of the school, he was in a vantage position to identify these shortcomings, Ibirogba urged the President to use his good offices to investigate the allegations.

He added, “Our prayer is that your office causes an independent, incorruptible and open examination of transactions conducted under the watch of Dr. Kudirat Ladipo in the last five years, so that the issue of administrative and financial corruption, impunity and other vices are correctly addressed in line with the provisions of the extant rules.”

However, ‘tell that to the marines’ seems to be the reaction of the rector to these allegations.

Ladipo, who, alongside Babatope, addressed journalists last Tuesday, dismissed the accusations as a mere witch-hunt aimed at discrediting her achievements in the school.

According to the rector, the allegations are spurious as her leadership respects due process in all its dealings.

She added, “YABATECH, like some other institutions in Lagos, has security challenges. The security vote is for intelligence gathering and the Council of the school approved it. With over 20, 000 students and hundreds of workers, we need to protect them.

Besides, various government agencies, including the police, have investigated the allegations by the bursar and found them spurious.

“Even the Spicy Nig. Limited he mentioned in the petition, the owner had died long ago and there is nothing about the firm in our account books. Insofar as I am concerned, there is nothing like fraud in the school, as we respect due process.”

Babatope also said the claims by the suspended bursar was that of a sinking man.

The Governing Council Chairman noted that the allegation that the rector gave him N75m was a deliberate attempt to malign him.

Noting that the allegation was malicious and mischievous, the septuagenarian former Transport Minister wondered why he would suddenly become corrupt at his age.

Babatope said, “The allegation that the rector gave me N75m was baseless. What do I want to do with N75m? My law firm is going to take up the matter.

I am 72. I have served the country as a minister and in other capacities. No one born of woman can prove any allegation of corruption against me.

“I was trained by our great leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He taught me to be contented and avoid corruption.

“Again, I do not have any of my children working in the school. If there is anybody bearing my surname and working in this school, that could be a mere coincidence.

By the way, is there any law that forbids anybody bearing Babatope from working at YABATECH?

“The petitions circulated by Olugbenga Ibirogba are not new.

They have been in circulation since his suspension in 2013.

The Inspector-General of Police, Head of Service of the Federation, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and our Council have investigated them.

All of us independently came up with the same verdict: the petitions are frivolous, spurious, provoked by vendetta and fans the embers of parochialism.”

Ever wonder why some students read very hard every semester but surprisingly fail their exams at the end of it all?

Such students read almost every day and night and are perceived by their mates as hardworking students who deserve to succeed academically; however, their poor grades keep surprising them and everyone else.

If you study hard and your grades seem not to reflect your hard work, then its time you stop working hard and start working smart.

Here are some reasons why some students study hard but fail.

1. Upholding hard work while neglecting smart work
Hard work is good but hard work when done smartly is far better and produces greater result.
Hard work starts with reading and ends with more reading.

Students who uphold hard work while neglecting smart work believe they must read every note, text-book, handout and all materials they can get to be able to pass.

On the other hand, smart work involves reading and settling back to self-examine whether what is being read is really required for passing exams.

Students who seem to read less but still perform excellently well have been able to combine smart work and hard work. They are able to smartly figure out what they need to read to pass. They know they don’t have to read all the textbooks in the library to be able perform well.

2. Not knowing when it’s enough
Studying saps energy. When you become tired while reading it is important you take a break, take a walk or go watch TV before returning to your books.

Most students read hard and fail because they stay glued to their books even when they’re exhausted and need rest. In such condition everything they’ll be reading stops making sense but they continue nonetheless.

3. Having difficulty prioritizing what’s important
Not all courses or subjects are read the same. Seemingly difficult subjects or courses should be given higher priority. Also, courses that are prerequisites are more important than electives and thus must be given more priority as we study.

4. Focusing on “I don’t want to fail” instead of “I want to pass”
This is a mind game. Winners always focus their minds on winning.

From personal experience, I see that most students who read more than others but still fail do their read out of fear. They afraid of failing hence they often say things like: “I don’t want to fail”. Fear is their motivation.

The solution to is to focus our minds on “I want to pass” so I’ll read.

5. Putting their books first and themselves second
They read all day and night while they forget about the need to take care of themselves. Haven’t you seen those who read from the first day of resumption to the last week of lectures only to fall sick in the week of exams? They stress and wear themselves out.

6. They read all the time instead of at ‘their right time’
There is often the ‘right time’ to read for every student. This is often the time of the day when you are able to grasp and understand more as you read. For some their right time to read is at night.
Students who read hard and still fail read at all times even when it’s not necessary.

At the end of the day, they are perceived to be serious and hardworking students but they have no results to show for their labour.

Because many schools have at least one computer in each classroom, the teacher can make that computer a vital part of learning for young students.

Distance Education
In the past, students could take distance or continuing education classes, also called "correspondence courses," at community colleges and universities.

After enrolling in a course of this style, a student would receive course documents in the mail and would be required to mail assignments to his teacher at the educational institution.

The process could be long and complicated.

Thanks to technology, continuing education students can take courses over the Internet at their convenience

Web Seminars
Not every school has the resources andbudget to send its students on field trips related to the course of study. When this is the case, the students' education can suffer.

But thanks to technology, students can use the Internet to virtually attend Web seminars put on by museums and other educational institutions. NASA, for instance, offers a program that allows students to talk to astronauts in space

Kaduna State now has a 2nd state university named University of Science and Technology, Kafanchan.

Gov. Muktar Yero of Kaduna State on Tuesday approved the establishment of the second state university to be known as the University of Science and Technology, Kafanchan.

Yero announced the approval when he received the report of the committee earlier set up to explore the proposal in Kaduna.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the approval came barely three days to the end of his administration.

The governor said the establishment of an additional State University was in furtherance of the government’s objective.

He said that the objective was to enhance access to quality education by the people of the state.

The governor, therefore, directed the Secretary to the State Government to set up a committee for White Paper on the establishment of the University.

The seven-member technical committee, headed by Prof. Abubakar Rashid of Bayero University Kano was set-up in January to recommend the establishment of the Science University with four Faculties.

The report was presented to Yero by the committee’s Vice Chairman, Prof. Williams Curix on behalf of the chairman.

The committee recommended two additional faculties as well as the need to establish a specific budgeting template for the university considering the sensitive nature of the institution.

“The committee also calls for setting of management committee to specially manage intervention funds.

“We have six volumes of the report: the main report; university law; report on the financial structure and academic brief; the master plan and the geo-technical survey,“ Curix said

Curix, who doubles as the Vice Chancellor of Kaduna State University, said the main report highlighted the specific units required to be established to actualise the objectives of setting up the institution. (NAN)

The University of Lagos has signed a research/service provision agreement with Wageningen University, Netherlands.

The agreement was signed by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rahamon A. Bello, FAEng on Thursday, May 20, 2015 during a visit by a team of researchers from Wageningen University.

The team was received by the Vice Chancellor along with the Deputy Vice Chancellor, (Academic & Research) Professor Babajide Alo, FAS; Registrar, Dr. (Mrs.) T.F. Ipaye; and Dean, Faculty of Business Administration, Professor R.K. Ojikutu.

While welcoming the research team, Professor Bello identified areas of possible collaboration between UNILAG and the researchers. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring that UNILAG is ranked among the best in the world especially in research projects.
