It's great to see a fellow Palaeozoic brother grin!!!

Your GPA and IELTS are good for graduate studies.
As advised here, please ace your GRE. It could inform your choice of schools; Ambitious, Moderate, Safe.
Although you may be behind the timeline for some schools, do extensive research on different schools and faculty who share similar research interests. Please contact them from now. It wouldn't be easy, but keep buzzing them. Their info is on their school's website.
Also. For Stratigraphy/Sedimentology and Pet Geoscience, you should check the school's in the South; close to the Gulf of Mexico. These are close to important sites for Petroleum Research (particularly the Permian Basin).

Schools such as University of Texas (they have a couple of campuses e.g., Austin, Permian Basin, Tyler, ....), Universities in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and the likes. But keep your options wide too.

Use gradecafe.com and msinus.com to know what schools would be best fits for your profile.

I wish you the best!!
Fall '19.

Thank you, my Granitic brethren! Let's keep hope alive

Hello house! I've been following this thread for quite a long time now. I want to commend the level of altruistic and selfless contributions on this thread. You guys should keep it up.

I was supposed to register for GRE sometime last year but I was too lily-livered but I've summoned up course to face it. I know I can't meet the deadline for most Fall '19 application but I'm still going to try for some schools that have mid-February deadlines. I plan writing my test by January.

My profile:
BSc 2016 - Geology (Geophysics option) - 3.46/5
IELTS - S 7.0, W 6.5, R 7.0, L 8.5 - Overall 7.5
6 months internship at an IOC (if it will help)
No publications

Applying for Masters in Geosciences with research concentration in Petroleum Geology, Stratigraphy or Structural Geology (depends on the school)
I'm gunning for TA/GA/RA positions.

The following schools are within my purview;
New Mexico State University (deadline is mid-Feb and my aunt lives in New Mexico)
Ohio University (the Geology dept doesn't require GRE)
West Virginia University
University of Minneapolis
University of Maine
Oregon State University
University of Alabama
Georgia State University
University of Utah

I'll appreciate any help/advice provided to steer me in the right direction. Thanks..

I promised to give my own account of my experience writing GRE due to the valuable information I got from this thread. I wrote my GRE today at the world famous JKK centre.

I finally summoned the courage to write GRE September this year. I planned to write it in October so as to have ample time and apply to various schools. Fortunately for me, when I visited BY Mafit, I was informed there was no free spot for the month of October and that I had to select a date in November. I was sad at first but had to accept the sad reality.

I then decided to visit my favourite Nairaland to seek clues about the GRE from the gurus. I went through this thread from pages 1 to the end and realised I would have failed GRE if I thought I could just freestyle and write it in October with barely a month to prepare.

I downloaded all the books recommended, Manhattan 5lb (God bless this book), Official Guide by ETS, and GRE General Test cram plan for the Quantitative Analysis. I also downloaded the Grubber, Magoosh Vocabulary flashcard, and downloaded the magoosh videos.

Based on the recommendation of this thread, I took my first Powerprep test to first determine where I stand before I start my studying. I scored 304 (148 verbal reasoning 156 Quantitative Analysis). Then I realised I had a long way to go. I began my studying focusing on the areas I messed up in the test. After doing this, I became cocky and decided to take the GRE practice test 1 in the ETS Official Guide under timed conditions to simulate the exam and still scored 147 Verbal and 154 Quantitative (301).

I became scared. I was moving backwards. The English was hard, I kept making silly mistakes in the Quantitative. I decided to study completely Manhattan 5lb to brush up my QA. The book exposed me to various secrets of QA. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I then studied Grubber for VR as well as the ETS official guide (These two books seem okay for me to recommend) . I learnt how to eliminate wrong answers and select the correct one, the best method of attacking text Completion and sentence equivalence. I downloaded the Magoosh vocabulary builder and practiced everyday learning new words. I did this throughout the month of October. I took the Barron simulation test and scored 310. I then began to feel I was making progress and would score above 309 which was my target.

I however took the Second power PREP exam and scored 306. I was completely devastated. I had to start praying against any spirit of 30 something because it was beginning to look like a curse. I was frustrated and angry and I just wanted to postpone the exam. My mum however encouraged me and I decided to take the exam 5th of November.

Please where can I download the Magoosh videos?

Believe these artists at your own peril. Everything is just so they can look good and pretend like they're balling. Streaming payouts as of 2018 are at an all-time low across all platforms. Don't be fooled

Lol, people don't want to hear the truth. Personally, other people's failures motivate me to do better (This might sound like "bad Belle", but that's just me). When you hear that people are getting refused, your brain would tell you that you need to practice more and you need to be 100% prepared. I prepared for a whole month, I memorized a whole book within this period and that's because of the stories I heard about how people get rejected and how it's not easy to obtain your visa. It was quite easy for me, but the refusal stories made me prepare harder than I would normally do if the stories were all positive. In fact, the two people who were rejected before me gave me a confidence boost because I knew I had better answers to the questions the VO asked. If those two people were approved, hehe I am not sure I would have gotten that boost (Yes, bad Belle, but that's how I felt).

Most times negative stories help us avoid mistakes. And I personally love when people say "Many people were denied". This will tell you that it's not a child's play and you need to be serious about your visa. You have to put in work. You can't just wake up and go to the embassy without preparing prior to your interview.

I repeat, I used 1 month to prepare.

1) I used 1 week to compose, correct and put my transcript in place.

2) I memorized my transcript every morning when I woke and night before going to bed. I stood in front of the mirror and demonstrated how I would talk when I get to the embassy.

3) I checked the dictionary for the real pronunciation of words.

4) I thought about possible questions and answers that weren't on my transcript in the bathroom. Yes, I would ask myself a random question and think about a great answer for that question.

5) I did research about my school, the state, the location, the culture and the professors. I watched YouTube videos from people who are currently in the school and they spoke about how it's to be at the school. I watched YouTube videos on visa interview and people's experiences. I followed this thread for a year before my interview.

6) I took this stuff very seriously. I wasn't joking with this, I prepared like God didn't exist, I prepared like it was a final year exam.

7) I went on Quora to read stuff about the school from present students, to help me with the "Why this school? " question.

cool I be beard gang, but I cut my beard and cut my hair really neat and nice like I was going for a job interview. I put on a tie with my white shirt and trouser to the interview. This was how serious I took this thing.

9) Tell your mom or your sisters to pray for you and pray as well lol. Pray and work for your success.

10) Be consistent with your answers and make sure you don't say anything that's not on your DS160.

11) Some people will tell you not to cram, but don't mind them. If you are good with cramming, my brothers and sisters do your thing. Don't cram all, just cram the important questions and work out answers in your head for possible questions.

This worked for me and it will work for you if you are serious about this.

BONUS!

No funding, no standardized test, my school had an 100% acceptance rate and nothing exception. The only exceptional thing was how I presented my case.

Congrats to you. What school is that, if I may ask?

Drchristian:

Shame on you for bringing out this list.

Tekno was brought to lime light by Davido and he enjoys Davido's popularity to win award in d past. he's residing in the south west with a lot of talents way bigger than his. Can u compare him with maleek Berry, Mr eazi, wizkid, Davido, wande coal, 2 face, kiss Daniel, rekado banks and others this year? NO

Runtown
It was still wizkid and Davido that introduced him as artist to Nigerians.. No major hit at all except "Mad over you" that hit is no longer a hit again.

Phyno
Imagine phyno without Olamide's influence?

Conclusion..these artists you mentioned are not even from the east they are Western based artists of eastern origin with yoruba influence but haven't out-performed western in the industry this year.

you said no artist from the east... tell me a hidden artist from the east that deserves the award.

I might ignore others but kindly explain to me how and why Runtown didn't get at least an award for "Mad over you"? That song was bigger than "IF" any any other song in that category.

you are confusing yourself kid..do you now see why he can still pull huge numbers..you all those heavyweights behind him

Listen, man. Cole releases his albums with little or no fanfare. Zero or minimum publicity. He even made a little effort this time by informing fans a week ahead. Look at his previous albums, if you're objective enough you'll notice a similar pattern in release, reception and sales. They all eventually go platinum at a steady pace.
You still haven't defined whatchu mean by " washed up"

He has a distribution deal with Interscope through his own Dreamville Records. He is still signed to RocNation as a solo artiste, which also handle his distribution now. So what we're u saying again?

kid stop crying outa your butt cheeks..i repeat if he didnt visit nigeria in 2010,2011,2012..he is washed up..yea yea.when you have interscope and universal behind you

Pls define "washed up".
Why must you include in your every retort how he's signed to Universal (which is wrong) and Interscope? What has that got to do with the fact that JCole is one of the top tier, actually top 2, greatest rappers and unique voices of this generation??

i dont understand these nigeria..j cole visited nigeria after 8yrs..jcole was hot in 2010-2011.hes washed up now...50cent visited nigeria when he was HOT and thats what i mean..capish

Yapping outta your ass, huh? In 2010-2011, Cole was on the come up. He released his debut album in 2011. He was pitched to be the next Nas. It wasn't until he released 2014 Forest Hills Drive that he shot into rap's elite. Thanks to that album he started getting the recognition he truly deserves.
He's been on the role ever since - all his albums are multi-platinum with 3 having no featured artistes on them. He's recent album KOD dropped exactly a week ago and he has the biggest first week sales of the year crushing Taylor Swift's record.
Please put some respek on his name!

Now I know you don’t know what is a classic album. FYI. The only classic albums of 2010-2018 era are:
Good Kid Mad City - kdot
My Beautiful Dark Twisted fantasy - Kanye West

Take care is not a certified classic, so far gone is closer a classic than take care, just like Jcoles Friday night lights. I like Jcole bro, I’m playing 4 your eyes only right now but I have to state the facts

So TPAB ain't a classic?
No hiphop album has more universal acclaim than TPAB(no, not even MBDTF, look it up). It is a highly dense display of ethereal artistry!

The production on there, phewww, perfection from start to finish. Let us not even go into the complex lyrical structure, impressive songwriting and groundbreaking cultural impact.

No artist can take that kind of risk to make an album blacker than the negro spiritual at midnight, with such great execution and bounce right into the mainstream! Jeez! I know you're a Kendrick fan pls never omit this album from any classic album discussion. Peace, bro.

Pharell Williams of course.

Next time, Do your research well before jumping into conclusions.

Not saying Nada again.

Yo! I'll have to check your misconception about songwriting credits. 9th wonder was credited as a writer because producers get that recognition. He produced the track. Go do your research, there's no song credits where the producer is not also credited as a writer. Why? Cos they piece the instrumentals so that the Vocalist can have creative freedom on it. Go figure!
