Jobs/Vacancies / Re: What Is Insight Communication Limited( Troyka Traineeship)selection Test Like by shaiguy(m): 4:26pm On Nov 30, 2006
Hey,

I can't help you out with type of questions and all that but it's more 'general aptitude' oriented.

Papers and pencils are also not required, it's a web based test meaning you need a basic understanding of computer use to be able to sit for it.

Just keep a clear head when you come in and you should do just fine

That's it.

Business / Re: Starting A Trucking Business In Nigeria? by shaiguy(m): 3:44pm On Sep 07, 2006
Gaby
i once had a friend(big brother) who came in from jand and invested in trucks too, he actually had quite a lot of them used once though. He rented it out to some companies and got payed by the day, cement companies, brewries, queries, places like that.
In the beginning it all look rosey and all, then the problems began, driver wahala, truck wahala, series of truck accidents and a bunch of other stuff.
Bottomline he sold all the trucks and fleed naija, swearing never to dabble into truck in naija again.
I don't know if he was just unfortunate or a bad manager though

Am sorry if it sounds like bad news o, but try investigate some more before you drop that wad sha

Computers / Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by shaiguy(m): 1:16pm On Sep 07, 2006
Glad you approve niggy,if you are only running linux as you say you are then you spec is too tight. I had to beef mine up so that i could run all my test machines off it. I used to have quite a number of computers in my garage, and set them all up into a couple of domains but now with the aid of virtualization i run fedora core 5, windows server 2003, 2000, XP off one machine and the cool part is i get to run most of them simulteaneously . meaning i have my entire test lab running of just one monster of a box( if i must say so myself)

Am an IT administrator and i have to dabble between technologies so i won't ever go all out and say linux is much better than windows is or vice versa, the truth is that linux rocks!!!! big time. The thing just works period, end of story. I got a couple of servers running off linux boxes back at the office and u would be amazed at the spec of the machines all my users serve off, nothing fancy.

I love my windows, don't get me wrong, i love my group polices, systems restore, sus, asr and a host of other cool advanced features but when it comes to stability and uptime, no contest linux rules. Let me rephrase that fedora core 5 rules.

Computers / Re: Plz: Help Me Setup A Lan Of 10pcs by shaiguy(m): 9:26am On Sep 07, 2006
It's pretty straight forward if you know what you are doing. You basically need a hub ( better yet a switch if you need better performance)that has enought ports to take care of your 10 systems, say a 16 port switch. You need 10 straight cat5 cables plus 20 r45 connectors. Once that bit is taken care of you assign ip addresses to all the system (make sure that they are all in the same subnet) eg

Computer 1 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0
Computer 2 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0
Computer 3 192.168.0.3 255.255.255.0
Computer 4 192.168.0.4 255.255.255.0
and so on. Make sure all computers have the uniques names and ip addresses or you will run into issues.

You will probably have to surf the web more to find more guides.
Good luck

Computers / Re: Cannot Save On My Hard Disk by shaiguy(m): 9:55am On Sep 06, 2006
I don't have much information to work with here but i suggest you do a scandisk or chkdsk first on the hard drive to ensure it isn't failing on your.
Update your virus definitions too to ensure a virus isn't doing the harm
Finally cross check the permissions on the drive/folder with the user id you are logged in as

Its a battle that will go on for ever.
I use Windows at work and its great and all but its just too expensive.
I have been playing around with linux for about 5 years now and the bottom line is, it works
Linux is so much more stable and less expensive (Its free)
Plus it comes with tons of quality applications that if you used windows will cost you an arm and a leg.
I have a system here at work configured as a router and get this, its been up and running for close to 3 months now i haven't even had to reboot it.

SPECS:
Dell Diemension 8400
2GB DDR2 533MHZ
160Gig
250GIG fIrewire
2 X NVIDIA 128MB (Dual 17in Dell TFT Monitor) + TV Out

Computers / Re: Virus Problem W32/rontokbro.gen@mm. I Really Need Some Help by shaiguy(m): 9:05am On Sep 06, 2006
Hope this doesn't come in too late

Get a copy of hiren 8.1 cd(Search for it over the net)
burn the iso image to cd
boot your system off the cd
select antivirus
select mcafee
scan
am betting if your system is as bad as you say it is, the antivirus will detect thousands of viruses and wipe them off,
reboot your system
update your operating system and virus definitions, ensure your firewall is operational and you will be fine. Trust me you will be fine.

Hi guys, my name is Olusegun Martins, am a fedora approved ambassador here in Nigeria and in the spirit of open source (free software) I am putting together a fedora Linux training event scheduled to hold before the end of the year.
For those of you who haven't heard about fedora, it’s probably the most widely used flavour of Linux distribution available today, it was curled out of red hat but is now a fully fledged operating system on its own. The fantastic thing about Linux and open source is you don't really have to spend a dime for the quality of software you get.

The training will be in form of a presentation, and basic hand on practical to teach you the essentials of Linux computing. You will get to know how you can leverage the power in just about anywhere, be it at home, in the office or even (especially) as a dedicated server. It will probably span a period of 2 days (Weekend) and will try to be as in-depth as possible.

Fully installable Fedora Core 5 cds (the most recent), T-shirts and training audio cds will be given out free to the participants.
It's absolutely free, no registration, no hidden cost, nada, zilch is required just come down enter your name in the register and you are good to go.

Due to the magnitude of the intended project I am looking for individuals who will be ready and willing to dedicated time, venue and resources to the success of the project for absolutely nothing other than name mention.

The event is intended for everybody, not just advanced computer users but everybody, if you can browse the web, access your email, use Microsoft word then you qualify, as a matter of fact you qualify even if you can't do any of the mentioned but are willing to give it a short.

The most important right now is securing a venue, speakers and a date so planning can be based round that. So if you have like a large enough hall preferably in Ikeja, Lagos and are willing to let us use it for 2 days please reach on the provided numbers and email or send a photo of the location to my email add.

If you consider yourself an authority on linux and are willing to talk at the event , kindly contact me as well
You can get more information about me and the intended project either via my fedora wiki page or my blog site.
