Dbestmax: Is dia a prize assuming I read all disE be like say, you no well. Park well jare. |
This is really a nice one coming from one of the most popular Nairalanders in the last few years especially in the politics section. (Though he's been inactive for sometimes now). Well, Jarus this is really a tough one leaving the corporate life to the political life. Though it is surmountable. Fellow Nairalanders let's come in to contribute our own quota to this new calling, by words of advice, encouragement, experience etc. Jarus, our MAN we wish you well. |
In the last one year I have strongly considered joining the murky waters of politics, specifically in my home state of Kwara. Although my family back home are known more for business and, in my generation, production of professionals (accountants, doctors, engineers etc), rather than politics, our patriarch, 100-year-old Alhaji Salawu Oyewale, was a pre-independence and First Republic politician, being one of the first members of Action Group in Northern Nigeria. As he told Sunday Punch in this interview, he joined Action Group in 1948 as one of the earliest members. He contested local elections in the 1950s, and was a dyed-in-the-wool follower of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the sage with high veneration in Yoruba political circles. I have actually never been apolitical, but I prefer discussing, rather than participating in politics. At a very early age, from primary school, I developed interest in reading about politics, and listening to Baba discuss politics of First Republic and colonial period. At such early age I was already used to names like Sir Akinola Maja; Alhaji Gbadamosi of Ikorodu, said to be a major financier of Awolowo’s parties in the era; Chief Bode Thomas; Chief Lanlehin, and of course, home boy, Chief J.S Olawoyin, who Baba won’t stop talking about. I spent the first eighteen years of my life without spending five consecutive nights outside of my hometown of Offa. I was born and bred in that rusty community, which is the traditional opposition capital of Kwara State. Kwara State has always been ruled by conservative parties – except the short breaks in 1983 when strongman Olusola Saraki worked against his party, the conservative National Party of Nigeria (NPN), to install the candidate of the progressive Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), Chief Cornelius Olatunji Adebayo, as governor, and recently, when the internal wrangling within the conservative People’s Democratic Party (PDP), saw the current Governor defect to the generally-regarded-as- progressive All People’s Congress (APC). That should give a clue to the platform of my choice already. Our Baba was an opposition politician in his era, more than five decades ago. Actually, the leader of opposition in Northern parliament, Chief Olawoyin, was from Offa. Beyond this historical trend, I have never been a fan of the PDP. This is a party that has been in government at the national level for over fifteen years with nothing to show for it. I concede that due to lack of ideological discipline that sees politicians crossing from one party to another at will, APC is also populated with many ex-PDPs, but you can’t take away the fact that the party is saner. One, I think more often than not, APC gets right its political recruitment strategy, the reason it has more performing elected public officers. Some of the officers that defected from PDP, most notably Rotimi Amaechi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Rivers and Kano states respectively, have always been decent performers, with progressive tendencies, even from their PDP days. For all these reasons, I have always said I had sympathy for APC. That is likely going to guide my choice of platform. Now, preferred office. I have always preferred executive offices to legislative ones. I believe you have the opportunity to make more impact in an executive position. Being a core Offa man, I must confess I have not been so impressed with the pace of development in the community in the last two decades. Putting my hat into the Local Government Chairmanship ring in the next elections, by God’s grace, may likely be the first point of duty. In the last half a decade as a public commentator, I have written a number of articles on the history, politics and administration of the community. In an article I wrote four years ago, titled, Offa: Recipe for Sustainable Development, which was published in Thisday and a number of other national dailies. Unsolicited, I set out a blueprint for the development of our community. At the heat of the unfortunate Offa-Erin Ile communal dispute that led to several deaths early last year, I intervened with a piece published in Punch newspaper, titled, Offa –Erin Ile: War Profits No One . I also took a historical journey into the Offa-Saraki rivalry with an article I contributed to Tribune newspaper two years ago, titled, Offa-Saraki Political Rivalry: A Chronology . I also have the honour of being referenced by veteran columnist, Mr. Tunde Fagbenle, in his essay on the outcome of the Offa Local Government Re-run election in 2013, which he titled, The Moral Example of Offa’s Jimoh Afolabi . All to show this is not the ranting of a Lagos boy that is disconnected from the happenings in his home state. Politics is a long shot, I know. I have a number of personal principles I will never sacrifice for anything, even as I believe in political pragmatism. I have already begun consultation with key stakeholders in the state. I will definitely keep my followers updated as things pan out in the coming months. —————— Suraj Oyewale is a chartered accountant, blogger and public analyst, is the Founder of JarusHub Career & Management Portal. Jarus: I am also joining Kwara Politics. How things change in life. So, if we say Change is inevitable, it's not far from the truth. Mr Jarus, I really wish you all the best in this new endeavor of yours. May Almighty God see you through. |
Nice one there from the people's general. Wishing you all the best in the APC primary, and subsequently the general elections in 2015. We are solidly behind you, as we are resolute in our belief that you are going to Aso Rock in 2015. Sai Buhari. |
Former Military Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, offered himself to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to contest the 2015 presidential election on the ticket of his party. Buhari made this offer shortly after the APC Support Group identified him as the man who should be allowed to fly the party’s flag on account of his “veracious personality, capacity for mass mobilisation, influence and status as an African political icon”. The group had urged leaders of the party such as Chief Bisi Akande, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, John Odigie Oyegun and other stakeholders to ensure that Buhari is fielded, as “this is the greatest service they could do to Nigeria at this critical time”. Responding after the endorsement, Buhari said he was happy to offer himself to be president. He implored his supporters to continue backing him. However, he said that if he did not nick the party’s presidential ticket, his supporters should not shy away from backing whoever wins it. “I intend to offer myself for the position of the president of the republic on the platform of our great party; I intend to make a formal announcement soon”, Buhari said. “I hope I can count on your continuing support and sacrifice. However, I would like to point out to you that, to be more meaningful, your support must extend beyond my person and always be available to the party and all those that the party puts forward; because it is the party that is the platform”. He reminded his loyalists that APC is a party with several qualified people for each available position, including that of the president. “It is the primaries that will determine who eventually represents the party in which capacity. If I get the party nomination, I expect you will redouble your effort and commitment until we clinch the presidency”, he added. “But in the event that it happens to be one of the other aspirants who wins, I will expect you as good party men to extend to him your total support. We are a united party and united we shall remain because our strength lies in our unity. “My supporters must not engage in any behaviour or conduct that will tarnish the image of any leader or promote division and rancour within the ranks of the party. Whoever does that should know he or she is working for the enemy”. http://saharareporters.com/2014/09/30/i-want-become-president-2015-apc-first-—-buhari |

The Hall is ready for the elections but no Delegates yet Amaju Pinnick, Amanze Uchegbulam, Abba Yola, Shehu Dikko, Dominic Iorfa, Mike Umeh and Taiwo Ogunjobi are all involved in what should be an almighty slugfest. Things are warming up already and we'll be bringing you live updates all day long 9:00AM Venue of the election was scheduled to be at Amaju Pinnick's Brownhill Events Centre. But there has been a last minute change. It has been moved to Golden Tulip Hotel where all the Delegates and participants are lodged 9:20AM Elective Congress is scheduled to start at 11AM, but there is controversy already. A rift has developed between some FA chairmen and their secretaries. Apparently, some of the Chairmen are alleged to gave been 'seen' so they can vote a particular candidate and they did not 'carry their secretaries along'. Their secretaries, who are also joint Delegates, are said to be very upset. 9:50AM Meanwhile, Shehu Dikko is still nowhere to be seen. Reports are that he has not been allowed into Warri at all. And even if he does somehow finds his way in, it is doubtful he will be allowed into the venue. Last night, he was asked to step down. He refused. 11:45AM Congress still hasn't started. Most delegates still in their rooms. Serious politicking going on. Heavy security in and around the hotel. 11:47AM Source close to Dikko tells me his agent has been denied accreditation and his name is off the ballot. Yet to confirm that. Dikko is also still being held back in Abuja. Unconfirmed sources close to him say all aircraft flying into Warri are being inspected. It's nearly an hour after the Congress was due to start. The hall is Delegate- less 12:00 One hour behind schedule. Only media and a few Observers are in the hall. Rumours circulating that the Electoral Committee chairman has been arrested are true. He was picked up by security operatives from the hotel this morning 12:10 Electoral committee chairman has been released and is on his way back to the venue 12:20 NFF Communications Director Ademola Olajire just stepped on the podium to announce that the Congress will start in 15 minutes 12:40 Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Godfrey Gaiya; NSC DG Gbenga Elegbeleye and Bolaji Ojoba just arrived. We are about to start. Nearly two hours behind schedule 12:50 We should be underway soon. 12:58 National Anthem, opening prayers (Christian and Moslem) and we are officially underway. I spoke too soon. Power just went off for a couple of minutes. A minute's silence for members of the Nigerian football family who passed on in past one year, especially for sports journalist Godwin Spiff-Sagbamah who passed on this morning 1:05PM BREAKING: Impeccable source tells me Shehu Dikko has unofficially withdrawn from the NFF race. His supporters have been asked to go ahead and NOT vote him even if his name is on the ballot 'for peace to reign'. Delegates who wanted to vote Dikko, were threatening to stall the process by voting for him irrespective. But have been prevailed upon 1:09PM NFF President Aminu Maigari addressing the Congress now, reeling out the successes of his administration. 1:30PM Gbenga Elegbeleye and Godfrey Gaiya have both addressed the Congress. More recognitions taking place. Unnecessary, in my opinion 1:30PM First session over. Tea break. Dignitaries will leave from there 2:07PM Second session about to start. The main business of the day. Hearing Amanze Uchegbulam and Taiwo Ogunjobi have been asked to step down or be arrested over their pending warrants Both resisting. |

oyatmicah: God will bless u frm head to toe, i was abt to question d guy just yarning say no wardrobe nd bad bathroom. exept for privacy u even get to lock ur wardrobe wit ur pad lock without anyone accessing itAbi ooo, though I don't blame anyone but that's what misinformation causes. In fact each occupant has a key to their wardrobe and can only give others access if they wish. If not that some students are just dirty, the toilet/bathroom will be very clean too because it's washed everyday by the cleaners. My Advice: If you are a fresher, the sure bet for you is the hostel because of its numerous advantages, in fact it really gives you an edge over others. The stress of going/ coming back home from school is even enough to convince someone to stay in the hostel. And if you have not heard, Transportation is really an issue on campus especially in the first semester. Have you heard of "Shunting" before. |
What am I reading here. Who said there is no locker or wardrobe in the hostels. Haa, that's a big lie. In every room, there's a locker/wardrobe for the occupants where you can hang your clothes and possibly put some other stuffs in. Personally I don't see any disadvantage of staying in the hostels except that, there is no privacy (which is expected). As for the toilets/bathrooms, there are cleaners who clean it daily, but some guys do really mess it up. But if there's shortage of water. Hmm that place na die!!! Kai!! Guys...... |
Symphony007: what else does government owe him? Seriously, but the same government maintains a mansion in abuja and their home state for thieving billionaire former heads of states, changed 5 cars regularly for them, give them furnishing allowance quarterly, a sizable pension and hundreds of other allowance, healthcare, govt covers all their travel expenses. We owe these scum all this but nothing to an honest patriot.Sir, I understand where you are coming from, and nobody supports the fact that government is aiding corruption, and rewarding politicians for no just reason. But things must be placed in its proper perspective. It was a competition and he was rewarded then for winning it (Case closed). Nothing more, Nothing less. The man is a retired civil servant and he received/ receiving his dues appropriately. IMHO, he truly deserves the national award but placing him on a salary scale forever. Hmm it's really somehow. |
Hmm Na Wa ooo. N100,000 in the 60's, that's a lot of money. Though he truly deserves the national award, but again the motive behind Jonathan making him a special adviser for life, is to me political. To think that he didn't design the flag on his own, it was a competition and he was rewarded handsomely. He was a civil servant and he received/ still receiving his dues. What else does the govt owe him. Now, what of the brain behind the national anthem, what has been done for him too. |
masterpower: APC SHOULD KNOW THAT THINGS THAT WORKED IN OTHER COUNTRIES DOES NOT WORK HERE. THIS IS NIGERIA.Mr man if you don't have anything meaningful to say it's better you STFU. It seems you don't know what a study/research is when you are trying to get things right. I am not sure you read the article well, but if you truly did, you will realize that the professor said it as things are especially in Nigeria. Whether you, GEJ, PDP, TAN BOYS, and your cronies like it or not, come 2015 your oga at the top will go back to Otuoke. |

I am really impressed by this. This is the jaw breaker and a right step in the right direction to send Jonathan back to Otuoke, where he deserves to BE. This is the time for CHANGE and 2015 is the best time to achieve it. Thumbs up to GMB, for constituting this. And I will say a very good job done to that professor who did this job. A strategist Indeed!!!! |
Timzy234: Because of people like you, people with excessive tribalistic and religious bigotry, he feels sad for Nigeria.See wishful thinking, that's why you can never be the President of Nigeria. As a President, you should learn not to make silly excuses, and be ready for criticisms. If you believe this Jonathan "Sadness tale", you can believe anything. |
theassassin: abokii sharap and eat gworoOlukwu, you better keep quiet instead of talking trash. I can see that you are also SAD like your Otuoke oga. Ode oshi. |
Feeling sad for which country? Maybe Otuoke. Jonathan can't seem to stop amazing us with his antics by the day. |
School Fees Increase: The truth is that, the school fees have been increased again and unfortunately we can't do anything about it. Though, Education to be factual world over is costly. But in Nigeria, most at times we don't really get the quality we need. As for the president, he's really disappointing big time and unfortunately talks too much ( Which is not supposed). Also, he is coming out to always defend the school actions as if that is his business. He should realize that the school don't CARE about his opinion if they want to do anything. Though he connects with UNILORITES well but it is becoming too much. As for the S.U.G, and student Unionism at large in Nigeria, the bitter truth is that, it's dying a natural death as expected (In fact I don't know the essence of it). If you think only UNILORIN is a culprit, you must have a rethink, what has happened/ recently happened in OAU points to that. The school authorities despite the strike didn't reneged in its increment nor decreased the fees. They were at home for some months and there's nothing to show for it. The students too are not helping matters, if the S.U.G wants to protest this, many students will definitely oppose them (After all, nobody wants to be at home for strike). In fact if they insist, and continue, when frustration sets in, many people will give up. For the government, they should try to fund the universities as supposed, because that's the excuse of our school managements for increments in fees. It is their responsibility to do this, to the best of their ability so that issues like these won't continue coming up always. Finally, the school authority have had its way in this one (I doubt if there will be a decrease). They should justify what they are doing with this money, and also tell us why there's an increase. They should also try to carry the union leaders along whenever decisions like this is to be made ( I doubt if they did, following the president's reaction). Fellow UNILORITES, I know it hurts, it pains me too as I am penning this down, that there's an increment again. But, if you critically examine issues (There's little or nothing that can be done by us) including the S.U.G, Let's continue praying for ourselves and parents that God continues to enrich us all, and may he never make our pockets DRY. MAY GOD BE WITH US AND BLESS US ALL LONG LIVE UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN LONG LIVE UNILORITES LONG LIVE NIGERIA. FROM A FELLOW UNILORITE SHEHU ABA |
