When I was about to eat the woman ask me will you not go and buy water? I told her madam abeg serve me food make I eat,
meanwhile the other man bought 3 sachet of water as I was eating the man gave me one sachet,
I have never received an unexpected gift at the right time more than this for a long time,
I thank the man and silently paid for his food which is almost twice the cost of mine.

About six months after it was declared missing, the Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet marked NAF 475 is yet to be found.

SaharaReporters had reported how the fighter jet went missing on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, in the insurgency-ravaged Borno State in Northeastern Nigeria.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, Edward Gabkwet had said the fighter jet lost contact with the radar in Borno State earlier that day.

Gabkwet said the plane disappeared while on an interdiction mission in support of ground troops. He said the mission was part of the ongoing counterinsurgency operations in the North East.

“The loss of radar contact occurred at about 5:08 pm on 31 March 2021,” he had said.

“Details of the whereabouts of the aircraft or likely cause of contact loss are still sketchy but will be relayed to the general public as soon as they become clear. Meanwhile, search and rescue efforts are ongoing.”

A few days later, Boko Haram terror group released a video showing its fighters shooting down an aircraft thought to be the NAF 475 alpha jet declared missing.

In the video that is about seven minutes long, the jet was seen flying low to the ground while the insurgents shot at it.

However, Gabkwet dismissed the video, adding that there was an ongoing search for the missing fighter jet.

“The attention of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been drawn to some videos being circulated on Social Media, as well as media reports drawn from there, alleging that the NAF Alpha Jet aircraft, which was reported missing in Borno State on 31 March 2021 after losing radar contact, was shot down by terrorists. One of such videos, in particular, began with sporadic shooting by several terrorists, including underage children on motorcycles and vehicles. It later skipped abruptly to a scene depicting an aircraft exploding mid-air, supposedly as a result of enemy action. Another part of the video showed a terrorist, who, while standing by the wreckage, claimed that they had shot down the NAF aircraft.

“Although the video is still being thoroughly analysed, it is evident that most parts of the video were deliberately doctored to give a false impression that the aircraft was shot down. For instance, the video clip failed to show the correlation between the sporadic shooting, which even from casual observation was obviously aimed at ground targets, and the sudden mid-air aircraft explosion. In addition, it is almost impossible for an aircraft to have exploded mid-air, in the manner depicted in the video, and still have a good part of its fuselage, including its tail, intact. Indeed, an explosive impact of that nature would have scattered the debris of the aircraft across several miles,” he had said.

Speaking exclusively to SaharaReporters on Monday, the Air Force spokesperson said different rescue operations are ongoing in order to ascertain the whereabouts of the fighter plane.

“If there is anything new, actually I will tell you. We are still searching for the jet, if there is any new information, you will be the first person to know. No information on its whereabouts now, the search is still ongoing. It’s a continuous process,” Gabkwet told SaharaReporters.

Asked about the fate of the pilots and their families, he said, “There is a difference between absence without leave and missing in action, they are protecting our nation and got missing. Ours is a process that takes up to seven years in this kind of situation. The pilots are still part of Nigerian Air Force till date.”

The terrorist, according to a statement, Saturday, from from Brig. Mohammed Yerima, Director Army Public Relations, attacked the strategic border town 23 April 2021 destroying three communications masts and looting some shops in the process.

However, troops stationed at the town supported by the Air Component of OPLD mounted a hot pursuit and closed up with the terrorists killing 21 of them in the process.

“The gallant troops successfully recovered a gun truck with an anti aircraft gun mounted on it, eight AK 47 rifles with ten magazines as well as two Rocket Propelled Grenade Bombs and five chargers. Other items recovered are; over a thousand rounds of different calibres of ammunition, one Commando Mortar Tube, 3 IED blasting devices, tool boxes, communication radios and cell phones among several other items of value,” the statement said.

[b]Boko Haram: Troops kill over 40 terrorists in DikwaPublished on April 19, 2021

Residents of Dikwa town in Dikwa local government area of Borno State on Monday said not less than 40 Islamic State of West Province, ISWAP fighters were killed in 13 hours of battle with military,

Sources among residents say the gunfight started on Sunday evening 18th April 2021 and ended on Monday morning 19th April 2012.

The source informed that ISWAP fighters had occupied the town after residents and the military were withdrawn, giving the insurgents false assurance that they had captured the ancient town of Dikwa.

“As the residents fled, soldiers also withdrew from the town in the night creating confidence in the militants who thought they were taking control, but we learnt that soon after the soldiers withdrew, fighter jets came and released fire on the terrorists living them scampering for safety in all directions.

” In the afternoon on Monday, while residents are gradually returning some to carry some necessary and personal belongings, we saw corpses being evacuated and some gun trucks belonging to the insurgents burnt and we learnt that over 40 ISWAP fighter were killed in the night battle.” The source insisted.

Dikwa is about 90 km from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital and has suffered several attacks since the appointment of the new service chiefs early this year.

In the last attack, both the Army Super Camp and United Nations hub were destroyed.

Also corroborating the attack in Dikwa, the Army in a statement on Monday said troops of Operation Lafiya Dole currently carrying out Operation Tura Takaibango stationed at Dikwa and Gulumba Gana supported by the Air Component inflicted heavy casualty on Boko Haram Terrorists who attempted to take control of the strategic town of Dikwa, the headquarters of Dikwa LGA of Borno State.

The statement from Brigadier General Mohammed Yerima, Director Army Public Relations said the terrorists in their numbers mounted on 12 gun trucks, attacked the town on the eve of Sunday 18 April 2021, just as the locals prepared to break their Ramadan fast for the day.

“The troops having contained the initial wave of the attack had to occupy their alternative Headquarters at Gulumba Gana to enable the Air Component to engage any gun trucks and other technicals in the vicinity of the attack to prevent fratricide.

“The troops launched a counter-attack in the early hours of Monday 19 April 2021 and successfully reoccupied their main headquarters in Dikwa.

“The retreating terrorists suffered heavy losses in both equipment and personnel including some of their key leaders from the superior firepower of own troops both from the air and ground forces.

“The troops are currently patrolling Dikwa town and environs to assess the level of damage inflicted on the terrorists.” The statement said.

Good evening nairalanders.
Please I need advice/opinions on this issue at hand.

I have been taking care of my mother since before I got married, I have other brothers older and younger but they are not financially buoyant. (So they claimed) I did not mind this but kept on caring for her ( house rent, feeding, other bills).

Although it's a burden to me, but she is my mother. Now my wife suggest that any money I want to give to her should pass through her (I will send to my wife then she sends to my mother) or she does the sending and I later pay her back.

Her claim is my mother is fetish with my money. I'm confused can this be true? Sometimes my mother will make simple money request my wife would say I should ignore her. She says she is taking me for a fool. I am beginning to get tired of this whole thing. Please help with advice or opinions.

Thanks.

How did she arrive at that point that your mother is fetish?

Do you guys always notice any strange occurrence after giving your mother money ?

If your answer to the second question is YES, I will advice you to experiment with what she said. Give her the money and let her send it to her by herself.

Don't just discard her observations yet until you have a strong evidence that she's wrong.

That's my own opinion tho

Romance / Re: What Happened Between My Girlfriend And My Mother by sheyiofficial(m): 10:26am On May 18, 2020
funkmrflexx:
We Have Been Dating For 1 Year and 6 months now. I’ve met her parents, we wanted to get married last year but her dad told me to wait till she finishes school which is supposed to be next year. I’m 25 years old and she’s 22 .

I live alone in the city while my mom lives in the village. My younger sister who I’m sponsoring through school sometimes comes to my place during holidays and weekends. My girlfriend practically lives with me because she comes from a type of an Abusive family. So she lives with me and I even assist her with school fees and house rents sometimes. I’ve spent even more than her father for her school.

Everyone In my family knows her and she’s a very wonderful girl. Typical wife material. She supports me every time even when I’m broke. I’m not the type of guy that dates a lot of girls . I don’t even cheat on her. Since I met her I’ve done away with a lot of ladies. I’m 100% committed to the relationship

But the problem is that she Has very bad anger issues. I mean she can destroy your property when she’s angry and I’m the quiet type. I don’t like hitting a lady execpt once in a while a general brain resetting slap. When she starts she doesn’t listen to anyone. Not me, not even her parents. So anytime she’s angry like this I will just find a way to make her laugh. Both of you can just be eating and she will get angry if you ate the fleshy part of the meat and left oily part for her (we have quarreled because of that I mean serious quarrel) . Sometimes I get tired of the whole situation. At the end even when she’s wrong I’ll let her for peace to reign. So I try to manage the anger at home so it shouldn’t go out

So we went to visit my mom in the yesterday. Because of curfew we slept over. So my mom bought us mangos this morning and told us to carry.

My girlfriend then said she doesn’t like mango that if I want to eat my mango I should carry it myself. Then my mom (she is the type that always shouts at every body. The real wahala woman) told her that if she can’t carry the mango then she should just put it on my head for me to carry na (If you no fit carry the mango u for kuku put am for e head make e carry am na).

That was the only thing my mom said. Then she sparked. Started shouting at my mom. That she should stop talking to her like that, that she doesn’t like it. In fact she’s going home. So she carried her bag and started going home. Every one in the compound started saying it’s ok (Na dat thing why dem tell u Dey make u Dey vex so) she was still shouting. I was even try to calm her down but no way. She was still shouting. Even my sister who had never seen her angry before became angry (na so you b? She said). I was really disappointed In her

The issue is what even made me angry is how she reacted. If she didn’t like what my mom said made her angry. At least she should have waited till we got home (this was the first time we were both sleeping over) then she would tell me. Or she could have called my sister and told her what my mom said. After all the fracas, she went inside the room till we left. I just told everybody to just leave her.

So when we got home I told her what she did was wrong that she shouldn’t have reacted like that. Na there war start. She started yelling and shouting at me that if my mom talks to everyone like that she won’t take it (my plan was to tell her that she should apologize to her. Because my mom already apologized that she won’t talk to her again like that. Which I know she will o . So we can just forget about the issue. But she never accepts she’s wrong ) She said I took her to my village to intimidate her in front of my family people, I was really angry and called her uncle and told him what happened. He said there was nothing wrong with what my mom told her (If you no fit carry the mango u for kuku put am for e head make e carry am na) and that he would talk to her .

I even scolded my mom before I left that I didn’t like what she said what she did that’s she was just causing issue. My girlfriend said when my mom said the word (If you no fit carry the mango u for kuku put am for e head make e carry am na) that I should have immediately rebuked my mom. But me sef no see anything wrong with what my mom said( If you no fit carry the mango u for kuku put am for e head make e carry am na)

I just Dey follow her uncle advise and leave her be until she calms down and I talk to her

So my people what’s offensive in this word? If you no fit carry the mango u for kuku put am for e head make e carry am na)

But this her attitude don tire me. Break up is not on the card for me at least not yet. She always thinks that they are other guys out there because she has a lot of toasters but I know they can’t do quarter of what I’m doing for her. In this modern time it’s difficult to see a guy who will allow his girlfriend stay with him thereby losing his freedom to do certain things. A guy who doesn’t cheat, a guy who takes care of her does everything for her .

I just think the things she went through in her family is affecting her physiological. And sometimes when I think about leaving her I feel pity because she can’t go back to her parents house.

who allow 22 yrs old to talk to your mother that way, are you stupid...
there is nothing wrong with her, she is behaving like s child, threatening her with break up, her head go come back
most of the dey wise up later from age 26

bros i have seen this case before....women most times dont know what they want, they are afraid of change especially without their husband.
what you dont know is that she is looking up to you to make decision for her. the day you know you are her husband now, that is the day you will know how much she respect u.
is simple, arrange with her people or (if u have money) a nice place for her,) but i will prefer with her people because of loneliness, and depression, when you are done, this time is not a discussion man up and tell her, u are taking her out, make sure she know u are not kidding.
if she is bothered about u sis, tell her she will come stay with her during holidays.

as for your dad, well continue to pray for him. but you should that is because he sees food to chop that is why he is lazy. is like your mom is empowering him.(no offense)....

How Buhari released Boko Haram kingpin, the Kano mosque attacker that killed thousands of worshipers
 April 4, 2018 - 9:30 AM
News Code : 888047
Source : Daily Nigerian
Facts have emerged as to how the State Security Service, SSS, struck prisoner swap deal with al-Barnawi faction of Boko Haram to release top Boko Haram commander, Hussaini Maitangaran, in exchange with Dapchi schoolgirls.
(AhlulBayt News Agency) - Facts have emerged as to how the State Security Service, SSS, struck prisoner swap deal with al-Barnawi faction of Boko Haram to release top Boko Haram commander, Hussaini Maitangaran, in exchange with Dapchi schoolgirls.
Daily Nigerian reports that in a statement issued September 9, 2017, the SSS announced the capture of Mr Maitangaran, the mastermind of the deadliest attacks in Kano.
But in a revealing article by Ann Mcgregor, an expert in global security and intelligence, in an international news site, News Plus Views, details of how Nigerian and foreign collaborators are making huge profits in ransom deals with the terrorists were revealed.
“Since 2009, the Swiss have perfected the art of private diplomacy to offer themselves as “neutral interlocutors” in many of Africa’s conflicts.
“That also comes with a price, but one has attracted and discomforted European and US governments is the so called “mediations, ceasefire and release of 105 Dapchi school girls.”
“The puzzle and the jigsaw was the manner of the abduction and release. Boko Haram are keeping in their custody one of the Christian girl among the 110 Dapchi school girls they abducted, Leah Sharibu has refused to renounce her faith.
“However western intelligence sources believe Boko Haram and the mediators Swiss and Nigerians are asking the Nigerian government for more money to pay ransom and further release of six high profile Barnawi faction detainees in the custody of Directorate of State Service. This is creating discomfort.
“The discomfort stem from the collusion and allegation of corruption between the Nigerian negotiation team made of the Director-General of Departments of Security Services, Mr Lawal Daura, the Nigeria’s Interior Minister, General Abdulrahman Dambazau, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe the foreign policy chief and the President’s Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari on one hand and the Swiss Embassy team in Nigeria and personnel of Human Security Department of Swiss Foreign Ministry.
“The Swiss intelligence officer, Pascal Holliger along with local accessories, Mustapha Zannah, a lawyer who run a private school in Maiduguri that gives free education to the orphan-children of Boko Haram fighters — the school was established and funded by the International Islamic Relief Organisation, a Saudi-based charity organization, on United States Department’s list of charities with ties to terrorist organisations and Aisha Wakil, facilitated the ransom payment of €5million euro and swap of top Boko Haram commanders in the custody of Mr Lawal Daura.
“The biggest concession made so far is the release of Hussaini Maitangaran, who spearheaded several deadly attacks in Kano, including Central Mosque attack, which killed more than 1,000 people. He was arrested by the DSS on 31th August 2017. The release was part of Dapchi school girls swap deal,” Ann wrote in the article published on March 28.
According to SSS’ September 2017 statement, Mr Maitangaran, a well known senior commander of Islamic State of West Africa, ISWA, “has been on the Service and Nigeria Army radar since 2012, when he spearheaded the armed attacks on the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone I, on 20th January, 2012, as well as other public places in Kano. MAI-TANGARAN was also responsible for the deadly explosive attacks against worshippers at the Kano Central Mosque as well as an attack on a military formation in Yobe State in 2015, which claimed hundreds of lives.”
The SSS last year also said that Mr Maitangaran is an IED expert, who “had been prepping and priming others for the perpetration of suicide bombing attacks carried out by the group in the past within the North-East region.”

Rann: Goodluck Jonathan reacts to killing of UN humanitarian workers NEWS
Published on March 4, 2018
By John Owen Nwachukwu 
The immediate past president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has reacted to the killing of United Nation staff by Boko Haram insurgents.
Jonathan condemned the spate of killings in the country, particularly the recent attack that led to the death of international aid workers in Rann, Borno State.
Following the attack in Rann on 1st March 2018, three aid workers were killed and one was injured.
Reacting in a Facebook post on Saturday, Jonathan called for international cooperation in the war against terrorism, noting that an attack on a nation is an attack on all nations of the world.
He wrote, “I condemn the killings of members of staff of the United Nations (UN) and other humanitarian and aid workers in Rann by Boko Haram terrorists.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the UN and the families of the victims as well as to those injured in the dastardly and cowardly attack.
“The UN and other humanitarian and aid groups such as Médecins Sans Frontières have been friends of Nigeria and deserve hailing, not killing.
“I therefore repeat the call I made while in office-that the war on terror must be treated as a global war. There must be full and total cooperation amongst the nations of the world.
“An attack on one nation must be seen as an attack on all nations. That is the only way we can defeat terror, together, not apart.”

Nigeria: Doctors Desert Nigeria After Terror Attacks
By Ahmed Obafemi
Maiduguri — More than 40 000 people, including 60 malnourished children, have been left without access to healthcare after volunteer doctors quit northeast Nigeria in the wake of deadly terror attacks.
Doctors Without Borders, the international medical humanitarian non-governmental organisation, has suspended its activities in Rann days after Boko Haram militants killed four soldiers, four mobile police and three aid workers last Thursday.
A female nurse was kidnapped.
Thousands of people living in this town that is located in the Borno State were relying almost entirely on the organisation's services to access healthcare.
"Many of those living in Rann had sought shelter after fleeing their homes and were already extremely vulnerable." said Kerri Ann Kelly, Doctors Without Borders Emergency Coordinator in Nigeria.
"As such, leaving our patients, who include 60 children currently enrolled in our nutrition programme, without medical assistance is an extremely painful decision," Kelly added.
ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT
Kelly said Doctors Without Borders would continue to evaluate how the situation evolves and would return when the conditions allowed.
Rann, near the Cameroonian border, and Maiduguri are among the areas worst afflicted by the Boko Haram insurgency. Rann came into the global spotlight when a Nigerian Air Force jet mistakenly bombed a local refugee camp believing it was a Boko Haram encampment. Some 115 people, including six Red Cross aid workers were killed.
Last week two workers from the International Office for Migration, the United Nations (UN) migration agency, were killed, alongside a medical doctor.
Mohammed Abdiker, IOM Director of Operations and Emergencies, expressed anger at the killing of the aid workers.
"We are outraged and saddened. We will miss them," Abdiker said.

The recent ransom paid to Boko Haram in exchange for the release of some Chibok girls have contributed to the recent upsurge in the killings and disappearances of soldiers engaged in the fight against the insurgents, senior military sources have revealed. The military men told Saturday PUNCH that despite denials by the Federal Government, money was paid to the sect to secure the release of the abducted girls. It was learnt that the insurgents demanded for $50m for the release of the girls but about a quarter of the sum was eventually paid. Saturday PUNCH learnt that the Federal Government paid the cash in two currencies – the naira and the CFA Francs to the leaders of the sect to facilitate the release of the girls. But, the highly-ranked military men who are engaged in the war, and who craved anonymity because they were not authorised to speak for the military authorities, attributed the recent upsurge in the activities of the insurgents to the huge ransom paid for the release of the girls. Prior to the current increase in the attacks by the insurgents, it was learnt that the troops of Operation Lafiya Dole, deployed in the North-East, had effectively cut off food and logistics supply to the insurgents. Some of the sources, who are also commanders at the war front, said that the troops had effectively defeated the Boko Haram members, who were on the run while a good number of them had surrendered and taken to a rehabilitation camp established by the Defence Headquarters in Yola. In October, 83 soldiers were reported missing days after they came under a Boko Haram attack. Though there have been increasing reports of soldiers either missing or killed since the Chibok girls were released, the military initially denied the report, it later said that only 39 soldiers were missing. Also, on November 4, seven military men, including Lt.-Col. Muhammad Abu-Ali, were killed on their way to reinforce troops at Mallam Fatori during a Boko Haram attack. Two days later, one soldier was also killed while four others were wounded in the line of duty. In October, 21 of the over 200 girls abducted from their school in Chibok, Borno State, in April 2014 were released by the group. However, the Federal Government denied exchanging insurgents for the abducted girls and paying a ransom to the sect. But the military sources insisted that Boko Haram did not release the girls without getting anything in return and that the Federal Government indeed paid a ransom and released some of the group’s strategists that were detainees. One of the sources said it was sad that the same government that was initially seen as tough enough to end insurgency in the country failed to negotiate with Boko Haram from a position of strength. “It is unfortunate that in government’s desperation to secure the release of the Chibok girls, it has put our (soldiers’) lives in danger by yielding to the demands of the group to collect a ransom and secure the release of its commanders. “It is now obvious that the group has reinforced and bought more weapons to fight us.” According to another source, left to the military, the ransom and the exchange of Boko Haram members for Chibok girls would not have taken place. “Funds were given to Boko Haram and now we can all see the result of that action; there have been renewed attacks recently and many of our men have been killed in the process but we will not relent, we will continue to do our best to secure this nation. “The military had reservations about the arrangement but it was not in our hands; it was a political decision that we had to abide with and it was the DSS that was directly in charge of the operation,” the source added. Another source, who is also active in the war theatre, said, “They got the Chibok girls and suddenly the Boko Haram that we had beaten and chased out of Sambisa are attacking and killing men of quality. “It is very obvious that they have used the money they got from the deal to buy equipment and recruit men to carry out their heinous acts. “The group is still in Mallam Fatori, they have infested the entire area and their strongest point into Chad is Abadam. It is from there that they disperse their men to carry out attacks. “Another thing you must note is that the towns around the borders are occupied by mercenaries from foreign countries. Where did they get the money to fund that?” Investigation revealed that Boko Haram members, who were routed out of their dreaded Sambisa enclave by the military, had regrouped at Abadam, and were still holding onto the fringes of Mallam Fatori in the northern part of Borno State. It was further gathered that the group was engaging the services of mercenaries with their operational base in Abadam in the far north, close to Chad. The latest incidents contradict President Muhammadu Buhari’s assertion on December 24, 2015 that Nigeria had “technically” won the war against Boko Haram and that the militant group could no longer mount conventional attacks against security forces or population centres. Following the President’s assertion, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, also said on December 27, 2015 that “we have been vindicated because Boko Haram have been decapitated compared to the past records.” The sect gained international attention when it kidnapped 219 Chibok schoolgirls on April 14, 2014. Two years later, on April 10, 2016, the group said it wanted a $50m (N15.7bn) ransom to free the Chibok girls, according to a report by The Sunday Telegraph of London. The publication said it gathered from sources close to the sect that the demand was made “during secret contacts with the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, who has said he is willing to negotiate for the girls’ freedom.” The sect’s six-year insurgency has led to the deaths of over 17,000 people, destruction of more than 1,000 schools and displacement of about two million people. Between May 2015 when President Buhari assumed office and October 2016, the insurgents have carried out over 20 attacks, leading to the deaths of over 2,600 Nigerians. However, Saturday PUNCH learnt on Friday that combined forces of the ground troops, the fighter pilots of the Nigerian Air Force and local hunters had been deployed to fight the insurgents around some locations in Gwoza. When one of our correspondents contacted the Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, he said that the minor setback in the operations should not be taken to mean that the Boko Haram was a formidable force. He told one of our correspondents on the telephone that the military was determined to defend the territorial integrity of the country and was equipped to do so. He gave the assurance that Boko Haram would not achieve its objective of acquiring any territory in the country. He said, “The group is not a force to be reckoned with as far as the military is concerned. “In spite of the minor setback, it does not in any way mean that the Boko Haram is a force to be reckoned with. We will defend the integrity of Nigeria to the letter, and that is what we are committed to do.” Faulting the payment of cash to the sect as a ransom for the girls, a United Kingdom- trained criminologist and Chairman of Puma Eye Security Services, Mr. Pedro Ayandokun, said it had to be responsible for the renewed terrorist attacks in the country. He said, “I was never in support of making any exchange with Boko Haram. That is what is creating the problem. What they have got will not be used to buy rice, but to acquire ammunition.” Also, the Chief Executive Officer of Security Watch Africa, Patrick Agbamu, said giving cash to the insurgents would encourage them to kidnap more girls. He said, “The government ought not to give money to the terrorists. It will embolden them to kidnap more girls.” Despite the insurgents’ recent attacks, Agbamu, however, asked for patience, saying, “Up till today, there are still attacks in Afghanistan and Iran. Insurgency is not easily stopped.” The President of the Association of Industrial Security and Safety Operators of Nigeria, Dr. Ona Ekhomu, also said if the Federal Government gives money to the insurgents, it could empower them to carry out more attacks. He said at a time when the sect was broke, giving money to them might be all they needed to regain more strength. He said, “There were insinuations that for the 21 girls released recently by the insurgents, cash was given to the terrorists. Cash is exactly what the terrorists need to be strengthened.” Likewise, a professor of African History, Peace and Conflict Studies and Director, Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan, Isaac Albert, said government had not been negotiating with Boko Haram from a position of strength. He said, “We have said for some time now that we have defeated the sect but it is obvious that it is not true.” No cash involved in Chibok girls’ release But the Presidency on Friday insisted that the Federal Government did not pay members of the Boko Haram sect to secure freedom for the 21 Chibok girls. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said the position of government remains that cash was not involved in the release. “Information Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, told the country that there was no cash involvement in the release of the 21 Chibok girls. If you have evidence that it was not so, simply produce it,” he said. However, one of the lawmakers involved in the negotiation which led to the release of the 21 girls, confirmed that a ransom was paid to Boko Haram but said the amount was far less than $50m. The source, who expressed shock when one of our correspondents put the question to him to confirm the payment, agreed to speak on condition of anonymity. He said, “I don’t think it is up to that amount. Yes, there was a deal. Something like that (payment of a ransom) happened but it was never near the amount you just mentioned; it is even not up to a quarter of that amount. I can tell you that it was done (paid). “I can also tell you that the second round of the talk was scuttled because of the disagreement on the next tranche of a ransom. The negotiation for another batch of the girls has hit the brick wall as a result of the failure to agree on an amount (to be paid as a ransom). I am speaking to you on this authoritatively.”

At least 83 Nigerian soldiers, including a commanding officer, are still missing days after they came under a Boko Haram attack, PREMIUM TIMES can report. Top level military sources monitoring the development told this newspaper that the soldiers were still missing in action as of Friday morning, four days after the attack. The Army confirmed the attack in a statement on Tuesday, but has not given further updates. It did not also admit 83 soldiers were missing. The latest update from several military personnel, follows our earlier report on how Nigerian troops drowned in a river as they scampered for safety in the face of a superior firepower from the terrorists. While about 22 of the fleeing soldiers were later rescued by their Nigerien counterparts and dispatched to a hospital in Diffa, southern Niger, several others were fatally wounded after Boko Haram opened fire on them when they jumped into the River Yobe. The Army leadership has established contact with the 22 soldiers —including two that sustained serious gunshot wounds— recuperating in the Niger hospital, PREMIUM TIMES understands. The missing Commanding Officer of 223 Tank Battalion in Gashigar, was identified as K. Yusuf, a lieutenant colonel. Military sources said the troops could not withstand Boko Haram because they had only two light armour tanks to work with. Even the two tanks were withdrawn from the battlefront in Damasak to Gashigar, leaving soldiers in Damasak and other small units nearby with no tank. “May God touch the heart of our dear president to equip the Army,” the source said. “How have we offended him that has made him not to equip us as promised?” one source said. “May God touch his heart to forgive. Our men are dying daily here.” Besides the poor equipment, the renewed show of strength by Boko Haram has frightened many, coming after months of relative success by Nigerian troops. Since the beginning of this year, the Army had maintained that troops were clearing the sect’s remnants across the troubled Northeast as a precursor to a new phase of winding down combat operations. The Buhari administration claimed credits for the “improved morale” of the troops which had made it possible for previously displaced residents to return to their communities and commence rebuilding efforts. Corruption returns But high-ranking sources on the ground told PREMIUM TIMES the latest setback was because poor morale had returned to the battlefield. “On the day they were dislodged, troop’s morale was at the lowest ebb and troops were not ready to face the terrorists,” security sources said. The sources said the soldiers have had to endure months of unpaid salaries and their allowances also being held by their superiors. All military sources who spoke to PREMIUM TIMES asked that their identities be protected because of the sensitivity of the issue. This turn of event had compelled some commanders on the battlefield to go out of their way in search of financial support to keep their men fed — albeit poorly. “The cause of the low morale was due to their being fed once a day and the insensitivity of the authorities to pay them their allowances,” the source said. “Only part payment of their allowance for August has been paid to date.” “The commanders on the ground go out of their ways to incur debt in order to feed their troops. “The ration cash allowance meant for feeding was last paid for the month of August. So the Commanding Officers on the ground are the worst hit,” the sources said. The sources blamed alleged greed of a few brigade commanders for the situation the troops now find themselves. “Some brigade commanders reduce the official feeding ration of N500 per day to a meagre N300 just to make money. Our findings reveal that most locations outside Maiduguri only feed their troops once a day with mostly beans,” the sources said. The sources said this “insatiable craze for quick money” bears a stark similarity with what obtained under the Goodluck Jonathan administration. “The last administration doled out a lot of money to the theatre of operations which was mismanaged,” the source said. Other sources said the current pain is part of the consequences of a new distribution policy put in place by the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, who came in a little over a year ago. “The present Chief of Army Staff, in his good effort to minimise waste, decided to check these excesses by reducing maintenance allowance for the various units by half. “So the commands are not too happy with the development and have resorted to looking into troops feeding money,” one source said. They, nonetheless, described the policy as “a patriotic one” which was put in place to check the commanders’ use of allowances by “to settle political godfathers and patronise women”. Army spokesman, Sani Usman, did not respond to PREMIUM TIMES’ requests for comments. Nigerian troops are fighting alongside their counterparts from Cameroon and the Republic of Niger. Monday’s development marked the first time in more than two years that Nigerian troops would come under superior firepower that required foreign military personnel to come to their rescue. A similar incident last occurred in August 2014 when about 480 troops crossed the border into Cameroon while fleeing Boko Haram. The insurgency, which began in 2009, has left approximately 20,000 people dead and displacement of millions. Boko Haram leaders recently engaged in negotiation with the Nigerian government which led to last week’s release of 21 of the over 200 girls kidnapped from Chibok, Borno State, in April 2014.

232 Killed in Iraq as Mosul Fighting Heats Up by Margaret Griffis , October 19, 2016 Print This | Share This On Wednesday, the Popular Mobilization Forces declared it would be supporting Iraqi troops in the Tal Afar area as part of the operation on Mosul. Taking Tal Afar would cut off an escape route for the Islamic State militants fleeing Mosul. Separately, Moscow voiced its belief that militants must be stopped before reaching safety in Syria. This umbrella group of Shi’ite militias also announced they would be supporting troops entering Mosul. Major General Gary Volesky, the commander of U.S.-led coalition ground forces warned the Coalition would not support the militiamen. However, this could be a repeat of the battle for Fallujah earlier this year. U.S. authorities insisted that militias stay out of Fallujah, but the militiamen did not. The list of war crimes there is long. This time, the P.M.L. was supposedly being sent to Hawija specifically to keep them out of the Mosul arena. The decision came after tough negotiations in Baghdad. It is unclear why a group of militiamen is not following their orders. Meanwhile, Army General Joseph Votel , commander of U.S. Central Command said that the operation in Mosul could take months to complete, depending on how vigorously Daesh militants defend themselves. He reported significant resistance in Mosul’s outlying areas. Authorities estimate that about 5,000 to 6,000 Daesh fighters are left in Mosul, but their leaders may already be abandoning them. Also, thousands of refugees have arrived in Syria , and thousands more are waiting their chance to cross the border. Refugee centers are planning for as many as 100,000 refugees. Iraqi forces retook Bakr , Najma , Osmaniyah Rafla , Siewah , and Zawiya . Shi’ite militiamen captured Bayda , Khirbet Hadid , and Shami . Shura and Tel al-Samn were also reported freed. To the south, the road between Haditha and Baiji has been completely cleared of militants. Special forces have arrived in Bartala . There are reports of snipers attacking militants in Mosul. At least 232 people were killed and four were wounded. In Houd , a militant shot and killed a man parading around with an Iraqi flag. This prompted the town to rebel against the militants. Reporters saw at least five bodies, but many more militants could have been killed. A man reported that his father was killed in the uprising. Militants executed 16 people in Azba on charges of spying. A failed attack on Sinjar left four Peshmerga wounded and 47 militants dead. Security forces killed at least 96 militants on the southern front. A suicide bomber blew himself up among Daesh members trying to flee to Syria. In Jouna, security forces killed 21 militants. Twenty-one militants were killed in clashes with federal police in Bojwana. Strikes left 15 militants dead in Qayara . In Mosul , resistance forces killed five militants In Qayara and Hamdaniya , security forces killed two militant leaders . A militant commander was killed in Begawan. Mortars left several casualties among security personnel.
