Another interesting angle that I totally agree with. Adaptability is an underrated but very important factor. Know thyself before you japa!

Angelfrost:
True that!

Another key thing is ADAPTABILITY.

Anyone who can't adapt easily within or across Nigeria should never relocate abroad even if he has all the resources at his disposal.

TravelRe: Japa: Many Nigerians Abroad Living In Regrets, Depression, Abike Dabiri-erewa by Shikena(m): 3:38pm On Mar 10, 2025
True. I totally agree with you having initially cut off from Nigeria for the first seven years of living abroad. Even with my extended family structures in place, I had to build again from scratch. Looking back, I told myself I should have retained my connection to my homeland while settling down abroad.

However, when you have the means you can always reconnect with Nigeria but with eyes wide open.

For many of us, it's now more of a semblance of the best, or modestly speaking, the good of both worlds.

Angelfrost:
Sir, it's the stupidity of too much privilege, in my opinion.

Why destroy a firm and solid foundation to chase phantoms?!!

Not against trying for dual citizenship, but at the very least, they should have a fall back option or backup plan, not burning bridges in Nigeria thinking there's a promised land abroad.
TravelRe: Japa: Many Nigerians Abroad Living In Regrets, Depression, Abike Dabiri-erewa by Shikena(m): 3:31pm On Mar 10, 2025
Spot on.

Angelfrost:
Great points...However, what you stated clearly underscores why there is a welfare state in Nigeria and a clearly unsustainable trajectory for the leaders and citizens.

1. A country where people can afford necessities even without jobs is either a wealthy nation subsidising for her citizens or a poor nation taking loans to mask realities.
We both know where Nigeria belongs.

2. If Tinubu has the boldness and unfailing ruthlessness to push this nation out of stagnacy and daydreaming, depression and suicide will skyrocket... Poverty will be off the roof.

3. Read up the meaning of "Black Tax", and understand why many are not truly living in Nigeria... A lot of people are just one bereavement away from becoming homeless and beggars.
Living at the mercy and generosity of families, friends and even strangers is not the way to live as individuals and as a people.

4. Where are the jobs in Nigeria?!! Who is creating them?!! What industries and investments are springing up?!! The last time we had major investments was under Jonathan... Most of them have even shut down and left.

If nothing drastic is done in this nation in terms of the economy, things might get perilous.

Now, the above might not apply to you if you are lucky to be gainfully employed (the numbers are shrinking by the day)... But don't kid yourself! Your standard of living shrinks with each spike in living cost as we have been experiencing for years now.

Some of the people doing japa have looked into the nation's future and the uncertainty they saw made them decide to take a chance.
TravelRe: Japa: Many Nigerians Abroad Living In Regrets, Depression, Abike Dabiri-erewa by Shikena(m): 3:29pm On Mar 10, 2025
Well stated. You have to define your personal priorities. Also we are defined by our personal experiences.

What I address is the ignorance of our people when it comes to living in other places grin

Angelfrost:
Absolutely... Personally, I have never been able to fully grasp the lure or hype about abroad.

As adults, restarting in another nation where you don't have roots makes no sense.

For a lot of japarians, it's just the fear of missing out and the uncertainty around Nigeria's future that fuel their relocation.

Whether we are industrious or interested in informal work, poor leadership still goes a long way... Look at the state of insecurity for instance.

If we solved insecurity alone today, japa rate would reduce massively.

Like I said earlier, Japa is not the consideration of underprivileged Nigerians... It's only the well educated with the financial backing that actually consider it.

You’re obviously not well informed.

TravelRe: Japa: Many Nigerians Abroad Living In Regrets, Depression, Abike Dabiri-erewa by Shikena(m): 12:08pm On Mar 10, 2025
Absolutely.

Just reading very funny clueless comments here. Most of these guys can't even afford the japa to a decent place and those that could are not mentally strong enough for the first few years of settling down abroad. Then we have those that are truly well established sustainaby in Nigeria, they can even live in a remote village and create real comfort there, so japa is irrelevant.

Even within Nigeria, we have those in the villages who got better opportunities to leave for Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt etc but will come up with a thousand and one excuses to stay within their comfort zone and later in life have their children cursing them out or detest them for being too laid back. This is very common grin

Angelfrost:
You are the one saying that... I never even implied it.

Maybe it's your insecurity.

I stated facts... Maybe do some research.

Is it the over 80% of Nigerians struggling to feed that can Japa?!!

Why not check the number of Nigerian adults with passports first.

People wey never get passport na them wan relocate?!

Let me say it again... Abike Dabiri needs a proper job!

Hammering and focusing on less than 20% of our population relocating or planning to relocate while majority living here are struggling to survive makes no sense.

Please, try to stay on topic.

Half education is far worse than total ignorance.

You only compiled a list based on age-long stereotypes mostly irrelevant in many places today.

Be specific. Where is the abroad that you just described? Which countries?

Afolue:
rent for half of a one room abroad monthly is the price for a 2 bedroom flat yearly in africa is that contentment? Paying fo 24 hours electricity in a place where you barely stay at home how does that make sense?. Isn’t that a waste?. Organic foods abroad, natural foods in Africa, compare that! Abroad you work till you die, Africa you work when you decide to as long as you barely pay pressing bills. Isn’t that a blessing? You can’t loose a job abroad for one month straight, the person will sleep in the bridges under intense weather conditions but in Africa many are jobless but still yet have “roofs” over their heads. They shuttle as they like. Too many to talk about. God is great, no standard of life is useless totally. Tis why I said contentment is the wealth of nature. People in Africa, has priceless privileges.

If you’re sick abroad, you must go to hospital be it you have money or not but in Africa the herbs are there…

Think deeply…

Emotional trash grin

franchasng:
Igbos are doing well despite the situation. Igbos will always do well because over the years, Igbos have positioned themselves to do well no matter how bad the Nigeria's economy and leadership is.

A lion never eat grass no matter how hunger hits the land.

If Igbos were economically underprivileged like the North, 2023 Presidential election heist by Tinubu/INEC was enough to cause nationwide chaos, but no because most Igbos are gainfully employed in either their trade, business, menial, artisan, middleclass and well paid jobs, while most are abroad shrugging it out, so no courage or desperation to hit the streets like the North that's ravaged by hunger, mass unemployment and poverty due to large population of idle, hungry young people, whose elites and the upper class depend mostly on government help, aid, jobs, contracts, appointments and whatnot for survival.

One of the reasons some of us Igbos wanted Peter Obi to emerge President aside his good leadership credentials, was to bring peace and security back to Southeast that used to be one of the safest regions in Nigeria until Satan Buhari became President in 2015 and used wickedness, nepotism and inhumane policies to destabilize Southeast and push some senseless Igbo youths to the edge.

We believed Peter Obi's emergence would have buried the cry of political marginalization by Igbo youths and possibly buried the issue of Biafra secession forever as they wouldn't have any other reason to agitate or complain of marginalization.

So only the North deserve to revolt against bad government like Tinubu's own because they suffer the most of it.

Dont get me wrong; Igbos do have poor people, but the number of poor and completely idle people in Igbo land is less than those in any other region of Nigeria and the reason is not far fetched; Igbos dont rely on paid jobs or government like most regions. They always resort to self help and self development, and couple with the fact that they dominate trade, commerce and small scale businesses in Nigeria, it helps reduce the number of idle youths in Igbo region compared to other regions.

And it's not easy to catch up with Igbos when it comes to business and trade because Igbos have spread all over the world over the decades making it easier for an Igbo person to startup business today with ease. While others mocked them for always touring the world including unheard countries and regions, they dont know that it's a huge advantage to Igbos and their business endeavors. That was the same thing that made Europe to dominate and conquer the world, Chinese are repeating same today.

So people should keep laughing at Igbos migrating to Cambodia, Nauru, Tivalu, Kiribati, etc, while the sophisticated tribes focus on migrating only to developed countries like UK, US, France, Canada, at the end of the race, we shall count miles grin

EducationRe: Igbo Now Compulsory In Abia State Schools by Shikena(m): 5:37pm On Mar 07, 2025
Igbo is the homeland language of Abia. If you are not comfortable with any decision that preserves their identity, go back to your state.

Handling multiethnicity will be addressed as part of diversity training but homeland language must be compulsory. Learning the local language is a critical part of multi-ethnic communities. Simple.

EmeeNaka:
I never⁷more praised anything. I definitely do not agree with any state making a local language compulsory for everyone in the state. Government can promote any language they want, but they shouldn't make anyone compulsory. Most states in Nigeria are multi-ethnic and that must be taken into consideration.
