Also try SubUrban telecoms in abuja. Ask for pricing of their Wimax and Vsat offerings.

If Startech and Sururban have coverage in life-Camp. that will be better for you.
if not, go for DOPC. They have best support than the other two companies.
If you have no other option than DOPC, you can still use it for Skpe/Google talk. it will still be clear just that this option is most expensive for you and sure, latency issues to battle with

The company will determine the nature of support that they can give me and my company.
Also, does it cover surulere and marina lagos?
Are they operating on the licensed or unlicensed frequencies?
I cant pay for 3 months upfront if i dont know if its a company that will last that long.
If im satisfied with these initial inquiries, i will get one for my house and another for the office.

Business › Re: Will A Large Supermarket Thrive In Nigeria? by sholatech(m): 5:18pm On Aug 29, 2006
There is a huge demand for variety and discount malls in Nigeria.
The lagos market alone has large unaddressed market and i once worked on setting up such two years ago but stalled due to funding.
Aside the large unaddressed market, you can introduce innovative processes and offers to the market place.
In a particular area in Lagos, i know about 5 discount shops that are lowly capitalised but their turnover is huge!
You can harly get it wrong in this venture.harrolds and walmarts coming to calabar is just for holiday shopping.people want to shop regularly from outlets not too far from them.

having a hotspot/cafe there is also a good income centre and im sure there are several several income centres you can have at each location. you can have this in every state capital and they will all be profitable. However, expect 70% of your income from lagos state.

I can go on and on, but my major aim is to encourage you as you will definitely create wealth and reduce employment with this venture
Business To Business › Re: Exporting From Nigeria by sholatech(m): 5:32pm On Aug 25, 2006
What precisely do you export?

I presently export Precious Stones/Gemstones from Nigeria and have considerable experience and can advise you accordingly.

My initial comments are:

a. Find out what you want to export, are they allowed or on prohibition list?
b. If the goods are allowable, then you need to register a Limited Liability Company and then obtain an Export Certificate from Nigeria Export Promotion Comission(NEPC)
Computers › Re: Licenses - Which One?! by sholatech(m): 2:23am On Aug 19, 2006
U definitely need isp license from ncc.it costs about $4200 to secure & 4 months to process.you also pay 2.5% of your turnover to ncc every year end as operating levy. You can work with an existing licensee like my company since your major focus is multidwelling units.

Very very funny!
You can get Blackberry for $100
you can ship it to Nigeria for about $60
$200 gives you about 25,000 naira.
Thieves!!
My question is, since i have my own Blackberry, how much will it cost Glo to configure it for me?
What if i dont use 10MB per month on the Go!
What a rip-off!!

BlackBerry devices gateways for computer attacks
A California computer security specialist released software on Monday to show that hackers can attack networks through widely popular BlackBerry handheld devices.

Jesse D'Aguanno of Praetorian Global made a "BlackBerry Attack Toolkit" demonstration available for download at the company's website along with 'BBProxy' software that exploits the vulnerability.

"The premise is the BlackBerry device that everyone carries around in their holsters is actually a computer constantly connected to your network," D'Aguanno said.

"So, someone can take over the device, or load a virus on it covertly."

D'Aguanno hid attacker software code in a tic-tac-toe game that, if downloaded and played on a BlackBerry, secretly invaded the network linked to the handled device.

An "attack vector" described by D'Aguanno during a presentation at a recent DefCon hackers conference in Las Vegas was to e-mail BlackBerry users a link and trick them into downloading the malicious software cloaked in the game.

The devices, made by Research In Motion in Canada, would then act as doorways that let hackers slip behind fire walls and seek out unprotected computers in a company's network, according to D'Aguanno.

"One of the biggest hurdles for an actual attacker is to get themselves on the internal network," D'Aguanno said. "Going head-on is usually not the smart way to go because of beefy fire walls and all that.

"But, if you get yourself inside the network, there are vulnerable machines, the defenses aren't as formidable because they rely on the outer walls."

D'Aguanno said that the potential for the BBProxy version released on Monday to be used maliciously was "nil" and that it was intended to show network administrators that the threat of attack via BlackBerry devices was real.

"The general thinking around the BlackBerry and handheld devices as a whole needs to be reformed," D'Aguanno said. "You need to secure the rest of your network from malicious attacks from that medium."

Another possible form of attack was "blackjacking", or hijacking legitimate users' BlackBerry devices and replacing them on the network with rogue devices, D'Aguanno said.

The components of business enterprise computer servers that support mobile data devices should be isolated instead of being linked in ways that allow unfettered access to entire networks, he advised.

Downloading of third-party applications to BlackBerry or similar devices should be prevented, according to D'Aguanno. "It is kind of a new playground, as far as a way into a network," D'Aguanno said, adding he knew of no successful hacker attacks via BlackBerry.

"I have a BlackBerry. I think they are great things, but you have to treat them like any untrusted computer with access to your network.

No Big Deal in Blackberry!!! and no big deal with Globalcom bringing it. You can buy any off-the-shelf and configure with MTN/Vmobile SIMS. You can get good bargains for $150 though i dont know how much Globalcom is selling theirs.
Yes, mobile phones for chatting can be a good productivity tool, but check out the pricing for the email service, as against exchanging SMS with colleagues!

If you have a PDA on a GPRS network, you wont need a blackberry!!!

Computers › Re: Wimax In Abuja, Nigeria Using Alvarion Breezemax System by sholatech(m): 9:24pm On Aug 14, 2006
Hi,

I fully agree that the bottomline is providing ubiquitous and affordable Internet services to Nigerians.

However,i am yet to see any other technology that can achieve this effectively in Nigeria-aside from WIMAX!! This is considering our lack of backbone infrastructure, cost and availability of spectrum in licensed frequencies. Many of those that tried to deploy Mesh network in Lagos on the unlicensed frequencies saw hell with the challenging terrain. We once got a link at 25km in mainland lagos but on the island, we used all available skills and equipments and only had 4-6km range!!

Yes, DOPC is going to be one of the key WIMAX players. Of course, they are presently not using WIMAX equipments but Fixed Broadband Wireless equipments from Alvarion on the unlicensed frequencies. They were recently given spectrum on 2.3Ghz in Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt but i disagree that that frequency is the best for WIMAX-according to Intel. That is pure marketing deceit. The major frequencies for WIMAX are 3.5Ghz, 2.5 Ghz and 2.3Ghz. Mobile Wimax Equipments are coming out first in 3.5Ghz this year, followed by 2.5 Ghz early 2007 and sometime later-2.3 GHZ. DOPC applied for and obtained 2.3Ghz from NCC because that was what was available at that time(Mar-May 2006).

Expect several WIMAX providers in Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt. Also, the GSM operators are planning to provide nationwide WIMAX services from 2007.

As regards DVB-VSAT solutions, the cost is dropping significantly. IWAY africa too is dropping to 100,000 naira and im aware of a UK company planning to sell 40,000 naira vsats in nigeria starting from October. Wimax is destroying Vsat business case, especially as nationwide roll-out commences
Business › Re: Doing Business With 300,000 Naira Capital? by sholatech(m): 8:53pm On Aug 04, 2006
I can understand the situation.

Let me start with practical guide:

But what i know is that there are several businesses you can pursue with 300k.
I have tried and presently trying some businesses with 300k-500k capital outlay.
Recharge cards are good if you have good location and sound distribution network.
Likewise phones, new or used ones. You will need to import these from Dubai/Finland/Sweden. I know someone who makes 100% monthly returns importing used phones from finland.

There are also some export businesses you can do, like export of solid minerals like Topaz, aquamarine etc. also honey,

with 300k, dont try selling clothes/jewelleries!! It ties down stocks and if you sell to friends, they owe!

But it depends on your attitude to taking risk, higher risks usually give higher returns. I know you can have 30-40% steady monthly return on many SME businesses in Nigeria, and there are several that you can lose your capital witin 10 days!!!

So first look for what kind of returns you want and definitely you need to look for a mentor/partner that can guide you. he/she must be someone that shares similar vision with you.

On a general note, make sure you have a sound business plan clearly written out beefore you set to start. That will show you if the business will be profitable and how you can make it work

Computers › Re: Wimax In Abuja, Nigeria Using Alvarion Breezemax System by sholatech(m): 1:10pm On Jul 31, 2006
There is no doubt that Broadband Wireless is the way to provide pervasive internet service to homes in Nigeria.
This is because of the infrastructural constraints in the country as NITEL never made plans for it. yes, Nitel is laying copper now in some residentail areas but there is no operator in the country that can wire up the country cost-effectively and provide ubiquitous broadband the way wireless technologies will. who has that money?even those that can invest billions of dollars prefer to use it for GSM!!

Now, the technology can be hspda, hspdua, cdma 2000 1x-evdo Rev A/B, Wimax, w-cdma etc. But i can bet you that you can use any of these to provide cheap internet service to residences/individuals in Nigeria. Forget about ADSL!! I go for Wimax because of the potentials and especially the names behind it.

Like wimamer said, startetch and suburban are deploying Wimax/802.16d in Abuja. There are several Telcos and start-ups now with equipments ready to deploy cheap broadband services on Licensed frequencies. Forget the Uk companies like Carwarhouse and BSkyb offering so-called free Internet service. It is for selling their core services. and you can only get 8MBPS if you are Just the way Google intends setting up free wifi-centres in certain cities worldwide.

With the information at my disposal, many homes in major commercial cities in Nigeria will have access to broadband courtesy many of these wireless technologies at a price that is better than ADSL. and each residence can have up to 12 MBPS for quadruple play! That is even before any body planning ADSL can finish working on the network design!

Wireless technologies like wimax are not been dumped on Nigerians-nay africans. Are we not using GSM? OFDM/SOFDMA technology that's now standardised is well established. Within the last 3 years, we have millions connected to broadband using this technology. See what clearwire is doing in USA that is making AT&T, Sprint and several incumbents are running helter skelter to partner with them or deploy similar tecnologies. And that is in a country where you have ADSL+ running everywhere. even satellite-to-home Internet providers are running to WIMAX/HSPDA/CDMA!!
Computers › Re: Wimax In Abuja, Nigeria Using Alvarion Breezemax System by sholatech(m): 9:05pm On Jul 28, 2006
Maxi,

You will definitely need a new CPE to connect to Suburban/Startech or any WIMAX Service Provider.

Your present CPE is not a WIMAX Certified/Compliant equipment.
