Career › Re: How Was The First Day Of Your Job? by showbobo(m): 1:10pm On May 07, 2009 |
Jarus: First day, First Job It was January 4, 2007. Fresh from the uni, no experience, nothing. No idea about how workplace is. Neatly dressed and in suit. The company was Vetiva Capital Mgt Ltd. I resumed with one other new recruit(finished from Unilag, and I Ife). We were taken round the company and introduced to all staff. Our systems had not been set up and the lady we were to take over from was not around(travelled to Abuja) to take us through what the job was about. So we were seated in the meeting room. we were just gisting, touching topics like ICAN, school, masters, jobs, the company etc. Few hours later, the Deputy Head of the dept we were posted to came to meet us in the room and gave us a run-down of the activities of the company, and our unit(Corporate Finance) in particular. When the HOD came back from, I think a meeting outside the office, she also came to see us in the meeting room and greeted us. During lunchtime, the HR lady came to us and showed us the canteen. We had our lunch, free. We resumed at the meeting room and continued with our gisting. When it was 5pm, we asked for permission to go since we were not doing anything and our boss released us. I eventually became so close with the lady I resumed with, that thruoghout my stay in the company, we were always together, our seats just beside each other, same unit, same job description, going for lunch together, closing together, despite the fact that she's a born again Christian and me I be Mallam . We were later jokingly referred to as husband & wife in the company. She had an offer from another company and wanted to leave after first month(not happy with closing late) but she said she did not resign because she didn't want to leave me(we were that close). We left at the same time and she's now with PwC and me in an Oil & Gas company. We still communicate till today.
First day, current Job First day? In full suit. Went straight to the HR lady that coordinated my recruitment process. Resumed with two other guys, both coming from Celtel. Like first job,we were put in a meeting room, and we were gisting. HR and compliance officers kept coming and giving us all sorts of forms to fill. We were given handbooks on company's code of ethics etc. We were called one by one and set up in the company's system. Later, we were taken to Safety and Health department where we were lectured on safety tips. Finally we were taken to our departments. One of them happened to be in the same dept with me, and we were taken round the dept for introduction. I had a brief chat with my boss on the job and I was shown my seat and temporary system(another system later procured for me). Since I didn't have anything to do that day, I was just browsing and that was the beginning of what later turned out to be a chronic addiction to NL in the first few weeks of my resuming the job. I was discharged by my boss around 3pm. Guess i'm more addicted. . . . lol |

iyeayo: I grabbed the job offer because the pay was great. On my first day at work, I was dressed in my best suit. On getting to work, I figure out that no one seem to care about my dressing, they were all looking very casual. I was a bit over-dressed. My to-be colleagues greeted me as if they were thinking in their head "what's this sh*t doing here" but I was thinking in my own head "you people have just started". I was taken around the company to be introduce to everyone, my legs shaking under me. Then I was given some massive documents to read, didn't understand a single word, I started asking myself, "How did I get myself into this?". But you know as Nigerians, we can withstand pressure far more than a typical oyinbo person, so I hung in there. Gradually my colleagues started "liking" me and started showing me how the system works and now I can bet I've got the best job I've ever held. nice one . . . . hehehe |

redsun: We should a form committee of discipline and vetted nigerian based members of this forum under the auspices of Seun and co, that will be our practical mouth piece and body for investigating, assessing, confronting and presenting the issues we discuss here to the appropriate authorities.
They will be finance mainly by little contributions of away dwellers like me,In this case,we can really make impacts as some kind of pressure group not just talking.
This things are for real and we have to face it realistically.Let us not be a statistics of another generation of african toothless bull-dogs,backing without bitting. Yeah. . . . True talk |

Its very simple. . . . Get a nice bottle of wine and some change in an evelope, take it one of their top boss and have him sign at the back of your car particulars and attach his complimentary card as well. . . . so anytime u're stopped by the junior ones at checkpoints just show them the endorsement by their boss. . . . It works!!! and precisely any car that is registered and has stayed up to 90days on Naija'a soil would never be seized by any customs for duty |
