Politics › Peter Obi Rallying Obidients To Shake Up Nigeria's Election - Reuters by ShowYourCertificate(op): 2:30pm On Aug 24, 2022
Meet the man rallying "Obi-dients" to shake up Nigeria's election
By Libby George

LAGOS, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Peter Obi is hardly a political outsider, but the bespectacled former governor says he is looking to harness Nigerians' anger with the status quo to power his third-party presidential bid.

Obi, 61, has generated substantial buzz among younger voters in Africa's most populous democracy, where the average age is 18, but the president - and both major-party candidates for the February 2023 election - are septuagenarian political veterans.

His followers, who call themselves "Obi-dients", say he can solve what ails Nigeria, including unprecedented insecurity, industrial-scale oil theft and allegations of widespread corruption eight years after President Muhammadu Buhari ran promising to eradicate it.

Nigerian electoral law forbids candidates from campaigning before Sept. 28. In a recent interview at his Lagos residence, Obi, speaking as a private citizen, said Nigeria's problems could turn voters against the two dominant parties, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP).

"The system they've operated over the years, it has brought us to where we are," Obi told Reuters.

Bola Tinubu, 70, is the APC candidate and Atiku Abubakar, 75, is running for the opposition PDP.

Many of Obi's backers were also prominent in 2020 protests against police brutality that ended with security forces opening fire on unarmed demonstrators, leaving them particularly keen to oust older leaders.

Young people accounted for half of voters in 2019, and 84% of the 10.49 million recently registered voters were aged 34 and below. read more

'WE WILL BREAK ALL OF IT'
Obi was Atiku's running mate in 2019, but said he lost faith in the nomination process. He is now running with the Labour Party, one of 18 registered political parties.

Dressed in a tailored-but-casual blue "senator style" suit and sandals, Obi said that voters in a nation "on the brink" would eschew religious, ethnic and tribal loyalties that typically help the major parties dominate elections.

"What is important is that people trust," he said, adding: "It is simple. You may not like me. But what I'm coming here to do will be different."

Still, as a political veteran himself, Obi has attracted his share of controversy in the past.

Assets he controlled appeared in the Pandora Papers leaks, and during the 2019 campaign he and Atiku were challenged on their track records regarding corruption and investing government funds in private businesses, some of which they owned shares in, while in public office. Both denied any allegations of graft, and Obi said the Pandora Papers accounts were part of legal and legitimate asset management.

Now Obi says he is happy to stand on his record as governor of southeastern Anambra state, which left a rare budget surplus.

His gubernatorial tenure, he added, showed that he was unafraid of angering powerful interests to help the nation, and was more important to voters than his Christian faith or identity as an Igbo - an ethnic group where some members agitate for a breakaway nation.

"We will break all of it to make it work," he said.

Obi said he is finalising specifics of his platform - such as how he would handle the tightly controlled naira currency or deal crippling fuel subsidies.

But he said he would renegotiate debt, extricate the government from the economy and enable the private sector to thrive.

"The young ones want to see a country with a future," he said. "My job is to take the country and give it to them."

Politics › 15 Deregistered Parties Back Peter Obi by ShowYourCertificate(op): 6:19pm On Aug 05, 2022
By Friday Olokor

The 15 political parties deregistered by the Independent National Electoral Commission, under the aegis of Coalition for Good Governance, on Friday declared support for the presidential ambition of the candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi.

The organisation said only Obi out of the candidates contesting for the 2023 Presidency can stop Nigeria from disintegrating.

The CGG in a statement by its national chairman, Okey Chikwendu, and Publicity Secretary, Don Anthony Harmattan, said the deregistered parties took the decision after carefully studying each presidential candidates to know the most reliable and credible among them.

INEC had in 2020 deregistered 74 political parties on the ground that they failed to meet constitutional requirements that determine the continuous existence of political parties in the country, leaving 18 which passed its test.

But the deregistered parties said they still have their structures in place, adding that they would all support and work for the success of the former governor of Anambra State.

The statement read,”We have earlier stated that the outcome of the political parties primaries for the presidential ticket and selection of the vice presidential tickets will determine which party we, the Coalition for Good Governance comprising of 15 deregistered political parties and some former presidential candidates would endorse and support for the 2023 presidential election.

“The choice is based on identifying the ticket with the most credible candidates who are tested, trusted, and exhibit sufficient intellectual capacity to salvage our nation from the wreck we find ourselves and meet the yearnings of the Nigerian people which is equitable, fair and just irrespective of tribe or ethnicity.

“In furtherance to the above, the CGG on July 28 held a meeting in Abuja well attended by the National Party Chairmen and former presidential candidates of deregistered political parties whereby they took a very critical appraisal of all the current presidential contenders for the 2023 presidential elections and their Vice, the house unanimously voted Peter Obi/Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as the most credible among the candidates and as such resolved to support and work with them and their campaign group on the platform of Labour party.

“We, therefore, agreed to rebrand our offices nationwide as Campaign support offices for the project. Our structures all over the 36 States and 774 Local Government Areas are henceforth required to support the Obi ticket.

“Nigerians have had enough of the disunity, eminent disintegration, lingering ASUU strike, terrorist threats, killings, kidnappings, hunger, unemployment, unbearable petrol cost and scarcity, high electricity tariffs, its epileptic situation, rising food cost etc and the continued lack of resolve by the establishment to put an end to these crises.

“We as leaders in main stream politics in Nigeria wish to make clear that only an efficient, effective and credible candidate of renowned character can resolve most of Nigeria’s lingering problems and we therefore urge Nigerians to heed to our advice and support our goals of returning Nigeria as the true giant of Africa and the production hub of West Africa.”

Let's denote President as P and Vice President as VP.

For APC: P (Muslim) + VP (Muslim) = Atiku or Kwankwaso or Obi ...eqn (1a)

For APC: P (Age > 70) = Obi or Kwankwaso ...eqn (1b)

For APC: P (APC Failure 2015-2023) = Atiku or Kwankwaso or Obi ...eqn (1c)

For PDP: P2015‐P2023 (North) + P2023-2027 (North) = Obi or Tinubu ...eqn (2)

For LP: P (SouthEast) + VP (NorthWest) = Obi ...eqn (3a)

For LP: P/VP (Party Structure) = Atiku or Kwankwaso or Tinubu ...eqn (3b)

For NNPP: P2015-P2023 (North) + P2023-2027 (North) = Obi or Tinubu ...eqn (4)

Summing up equations 1 to 4, gives us:

Atiku = 3
Kwankwaso = 4
Obi = 6
Tinubu = 3

So Obi has the highest chances of wining the election with a probability of 38%, this followed distantly by Kwankwaso with 25%. Atiku and Tinubu gets 19%.

The summary is that Obi chances of winning the elections based on Age, Geopolitical Zoning, Party Structure, APC Failure and Muslim/Muslim Ticket is 1.5 times more than Kwankwaso and 2.0 times more than Atiku and Tinubu

Politics › Peter Obi An Emerging Force, Can’t Be Wished Away – Gov Ikpeazu by ShowYourCertificate(op): 1:48am On Aug 01, 2022
By Chinelo Obogo

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State has described the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi as an emerging force who connects seamlessly with the youth and whose message resonates with many.

Ikpeazu who posted the message on his twitter handle on Sunday, July 31, after Obi paid him a courtesy visit, said the former Anambra governor has a great personality, describing him as a man that can’t be wished away by anyone.

“Recently, I received my brother HE Peter Obi in Abia State. From all indications, Peter Obi, is an emerging force who connects seamlessly with our youth and whose message resonates with many. He’s a man that can’t be wished away by anyone. Great personality,” Ikpeazu said.

This is coming on the heels of the recent statement by the former Senate Minority Leader representing Abia South, Enyinnaya Abaribe, who said that irrespective of one’s political affiliation, it will be difficult to campaign against Obi.

Abaribe who defected to the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, and spoke at the inaugural Ikengaonline town-hall virtual meeting, said Obi’s phenomenon had brought huge revolution in the country’s electoral system and that a lot of youths and Nigerians from across the different geo-political zones who had lost interest in the political system had suddenly developed interest in the 2023 elections.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that Obi has galvanised interests of people not just in Igbo land but across other ge-opolitical zones. He has revolutionarised the system. Though I’m in a different party, the truth is that it will be difficult for me to say: Don’t vote for Obi. In fact, some parties have already adopted him. They tell people: For President, vote for Obi, and then for other positions vote our party,” Abaribe said.

However, Abaribe and Ikpeazu’s statement differs from that of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, who recently said in a TV interview that it will take a miracle for Obi to win the presidential election in 2023.

Politics › Heavy Shootings At Ministers Hill & Dantata Bridge In Abuja by ShowYourCertificate(op): 1:39am On Jul 27, 2022
Lungile Dumisani

Heavy shootings have been reported around Ministers Hill & Dantata Bridge in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The source of shooting or number of casualties is yet to be established. Earlier in the day, Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, ordered a beef up of security in the FCT in order to forestall security breach by the terrorists.

Apprehension greeted many parts of Abuja following the invasion of Kuje Prison by Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) on July 5, 2022.

In a statement on Tuesday, Force spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the IGP had charged the Force Intelligence Bureau (FIB) to collaborate with residents in order to ward off adversaries.

He explained that the force is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that the miscreants were routed.

”We are not leaving any stone unturned to fortify the Federal Capital Territory and its environs.

”The IGP has ordered for additional deployment of assets to Strategic areas of the FCT while the Force Intelligence Bureau has been charged on robust Intelligence gathering and information sharing amongst other agencies.

”All residents of the FCT are urged to synergise and be on the same page with the Police and other security agencies in making sure that we forestall any ugly incidences in and around the FCT,” the statement read.

KadunaReporter:
Peter Obi Support Network (PSON) has condemned Governor Nasir El-rufai for his decision to prevent a planned Northern Summit in support of Mr. Peter Obi from holding at the Arewa House in Kaduna state.

The Governor through his spokesperson called the Manager of Arewa House to notify POSN spokesman that “we cannot have Peter/Datti Northern Summit in Arewa House”, less than 24 hours to the event.

The governor failed to give any reason for turning down the group's widely advertised use of the venue.

The frontline support group had unveiled plans to hold a summit specifically designed to interact with supporters of the frontline presidential candidate across the 19 Northern States of the country.

Comrade Sani Saeed Altukry, Spokesman, Peter Obi Support Network (POSN) told newsmen this morning that the summit is not a political campaign of any sorts, but a converge of volunteers and would-be volunteers and supporters of the Obi-Datti project, for necessary interaction and cross-fertilization of ideas.

The event was initially billed to hold on the 19th of July 2022 at the popular Arewa House, Raba Road, Kaduna, Kaduna State, but the governor issued a directive cancelling the use of the venue after the group had paid for its use.

POSN further stated that Governor El-rufai is too small to stop the "Peoples Movement" which Peter Obi represents vowing not to succumb to intimidation aimed at suppressing the liberation of northern Nigeria from under-development and poverty.

The statement reads, "we condemn the decision of the Governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-rufai to block the hosting of the Northern Summit for Peter Obi and Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) and his running mate at the Arewa House in the state.

"The decision of the Governor is disheartening at the critical point in time when Northern Nigerians are desperate for development and liberation from poverty due to maladministration.

"The Governor of Kaduna state is intimidated by the rising profile of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, across the length and breadth of the country.

“The Governor should know that this is a "Peoples Movement" which can never be stopped.

“The Movement represents all oppressed Nigerians and everyone that desires good governance, and Governor El-rufai is too small to suppress it."

Politics › Adamawa Youths Join Obi’s LP In Droves - Theguardian by ShowYourCertificate(op): 1:30am On Jul 19, 2022
Thousands of youths took over major streets of Yola, Adamawa State, yesterday, drumming support for the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Shops along the popular Atiku Abubakar road were shut down, as the traders come out to cheer the youth and women, who carried placards with inscriptions canvassing support of Obi’s presidential ambition.

Spokesman for the group known as Coalition of All Peter Obi’s Campaign Supporters, Jeremiah Peter, told journalists that the roadshow was to inform the people of Adamawa that only Obi has the key to save the children of the poor.

According to him, the choice of Obi is based on his competence, his credentials and age, which he said are the qualities that placed him above other contestants.

He urged Nigerians to vote candidates based on their qualities and not ethnicity, region or religion. Jeremiah pointed out that the roadshow was also to sensitise the people of Adamawa on the importance of registration for Permanent Voter Card (PVC) to enable them elect leaders of their choice.

He advised voters not to sell their votes, pointing out that their children and grandchildren would suffer the consequences of any selfish action.
