The founder and president of Living Faith Church Worldwide has reacted over the incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen. He condemned the way the Government has handled the lingering problems especially in this administration.

Speaking towards the end of his sermon, he admonished the society to embrace peace by all means, but should never fold their hands while the marauding herdsmen come destroying their crops, and even committing murder in the process.

I knew these people personally... We were neighbours until I moved out of the area. Yesterday after Church Service, I even parked in front of their compound when I went to visit a friend, not knowing they were somwhere, obviously oblivious of life itself.

I remember when they stole their mother's car sometime last year or earlier this year and she took it in good faith judging from her looks that period.

The last time I saw Grace, their daughter was when she was in Church with her mom last month - even though they are Catholics, they worshipped at Living Faith Church, Jos Headquarters.

They were such a peaceful, loving, trouble-free, easy-going and successful family.

Almost everybody in that area sold their houses and left because of a seeming threat of fulani-herdsmen invasion, but they stayed on until now.

May God grant their souls eternal rest. Amen!

Ok... In the past/recent weeks, we have read on different forums why paying tithes is important. It has become so talked about that there was a report of some Church members walking out on a popular preacher because he was preaching on the subject of tithing.

So many Nairalanders have also talked for or against it.

My question is: why so much emphasis on tithing but nobody seems to be talking about offerings?

1. Is tithe better or more acceptable than offering?

2. God accepted Abel's offering but rejected Cain's?

As practised in the Public Civil Service in Nigeria based on the Scheme of Civil Service, a graduate with the Bachelor's Degree is usually appointed to GL08 except for some courses like Law whose entry point was adjusted a few years ago to GL09.

The steps on entry is usually 02 and rises with time except one is promoted to a higher Grade Level.

But a graduate with B.Eng and B.Tech will be better appreciated in terms of emoluments if they work with Ministry of Technology and their likes. Just like a graduate with B.Ed will be more appreciated in the Ministry of Education, etc.

No fewer than 29 persons, mainly women and children, were, yesterday, killed in an attack by suspected herdsmen in Nkiedonwhro village of Irigwe chiefdom in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State. Plateau women protest at the National Assembly in Abuja Three others sustained various degrees of injuries. It will be recalled that several attacks had been carried out by herdsmen in villages, forcing Governor Simon Lalong to declare a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the local government area. However, despite the curfew declared last Friday, night attacks have persisted in the villages with many residents already fleeing the troubled area.

The President’s Position
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the military and the Police to put mechanism in place to ensure that there is no reprisal attacks in Plateau State. President Buhari, who was reacting to the killing of about 29 persons by herdsmen, said the madness should not be allowed to continue. In a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President said he received, with deep sadness and regret, news of the killings of over 20 persons. According to the statement, “President Buhari believes that this madness has gone too far. He has instructed the military and the Police to not only bring the violence to an instant end, but to draw up a plan to ensure that there are no further attacks and reprisal attacks by one group against the other. “President Buhari is devoted to the sanctity of Nigeria’s unity, and he encourages Nigerians of all groups to learn to live together in peace and harmony. “He commiserates with the governor and people of Plateau State, and with those who lost their loved ones, friends and family: may God comfort them as only He can.” Army, Police keep mum Spokesman of Operation Safe Haven, Captain Adam Umar, did not answer calls from his mobile phones, while his Police Command counterpart, Matthias Tyopev, said he was awaiting the report from the Divisional Police Officer of Bassa Local Government Area before talking on the issue. However, President of Irigwe Development Association, Sunday Abdu, who confirmed the incident, claimed that the victims were taken to a classroom in a public primary school in the village by members of Operation Safe Haven, saddled with the responsibility of keeping peace in the area, only to be abandoned. According to him, “what happened was annihilation; innocent people killed that way in cold-blood; they just wiped them out. “The security men ushered the people into a classroom before the attack in the village. They later ran away and left the victims to be massacred by the assailants. The mass burial is about taking place. “How can you have personnel of the Federal Republic of Nigeria run away and leave the citizens? How and why? That is to tell you that we don’t have security, it is a simple as that. “Twenty-seven people have been confirmed killed, but someone told us that two more bodies have been discovered. I have not confirmed that yet.

Series Of Attacks
“Since the gruesome attack on Ncha village on September 7, there has been series of other attacks. Like Hukke, in September 9, two persons were killed; Nkyie Dongwro, October 8, one person killed, another wounded; Kpachudu, October 10, a young man killed by a Mobile Policeman. “Nzhweruvo and Tafigana, October 11, three dead and houses razed; Rikwe Chongu, October 12, houses razed; Taegbe, October 14, six dead, five injured and houses razed; Nkyie Doghwro, October 16, 29 dead, three injured at a school used as camp and protected by security. “It is painful that these happened despite useful timely information provided to security personnel regarding movement and mode of operation of the assailants. “While no single attacker has been arrested by the security agents, they rather arrest and detain helpless natives on suspicion of possessing weapons, despite handset being found on the ground during the attack. “We urge the government, if it must sustain the curfew, to do the needful and stop these nightly attacks on our people; our people cannot go to their farms anymore, even as harvest is near for fear of attacks by herdsmen, who openly graze on ripe crops.”

Rep begs FG To Intervene
Meanwhile, member representing Jos North/Bassa Federal constituency, Suleiman Kwande, called on the Federal Government to investigate the renewed violence in state, especially in the Irigwe Chiefdom. In a statement Kwande said: “The native of the locality in the last few weeks have suffered unprovoked attacks. I call on the Federal Government to set up a committee to investigate the fresh killing of innocent persons, including children, women, men and the aged in a primary school, where they were taking refuge. “Security agencies must wake up to their constitutional responsibility of protecting lives in the state; this evil must be stopped — enough of all the killings.”

Survivor Speaks
Meanwhile, a survivor, Samson Amos, who narrowly escaped death during the attack, told Vanguard: “It happened at about 8p.m. This attack is the second in the village. When they attacked us the first time, the military was stationed here to avoid a repeat. “When we got wind of a likely attack yesterday evening (Sunday), we reported to the military and they told us to come and stay in a classroom that has been provided for them as operational base. “We obediently went into the classroom to sleep. But some people were skeptical about this, so they left. “Not long after we entered the classroom, the military left and not long after, the attackers came and we were trapped. They unleashed mayhem. “I counted 27 corpses, two more who were in the hospital died and three others are still in the hospital being treated for various degrees of injuries. A mass grave has been dug to bury the people.” Asked about the identity of the attackers, he said: “You know we have co-habited with the herdsmen for a long time. It is easy to recognise them. We saw them and we know they are the ones killing our people. This is an incident which keeps recurring and there is room for a repeat. “The protest that was held at Jebbu Miango last week was against the seeming lacklustre attitude of the military. The people don’t have faith in the military anymore.”

The Oxford dictionary defines education as “the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction especially at a school or university.”

Everyone that has had the chance to go to school has been subjected to this process; sitting in an enclosed room with a book, a pen and a piece of paper, listening to and noting down instructions given by someone called a teacher.

Education came about as a solution to difficulty in passing knowledge from one generation to another. Schools were set up, people were hired to pass on the knowledge, a vast number of subjects like History, Science, Geography and Mathematics were borne and thus, the process of “systematic instruction” began.

For at least two centuries, this has been the mode of training, with a few adjustments every now and then depending on the needs of society at a given time. Since its inception, people have had to spend all their childhood and some part of their adult life trying to complete the process of formal education, given its various levels. The subjects change but the environment is generally the same; enclosed and restricted, complete with listening and noting down instructions.

The balance between education and talent in schools?

The education system has always been flawed; students have always been placed in a restricted environment and taught a vast number of subjects, most of which are theoretical. This type of setting limits the students to the idea of working hard in school, graduating and then hunting for jobs. However, with the soaring levels of unemployment and the reward for talent today, it is only prudent that the narrative must change. And the government is aware of the changing trend in this global world.

Joyce Musabi, the head of department for curriculum development at the Rwanda Education Board, says the government is in the process of making reforms in the school curriculum to include subjects that illuminate the students’ personal skills and talents. The reforms will begin to take place in January 2016, according to her, but they can only go as far due to limited facilities and resources.

As to whether there is a provision to give special attention to students who are academically challenged, Musabi says such an undertaking would be ideal but because of the various programmes government is funding, it is overstretched and is currently unable to avail all the required facilities and human resource to fully implement that venture. She, however, advises students who find a challenge with formal education to join vocational institutions upon completing the ordinary level.

Emmanuel Hakizimana, the deputy head teacher of Remera Catholic II, a primary school, says: “I believe it is possible for a child to succeed using his talent even if they don’t get formal education. It is, however, difficult to give special training to the students who are academically challenged but talented in other arenas since there are limited materials and resources. Also, the curriculum doesn’t leave enough time for teaching various subjects since pupils study in two shifts.”

In public secondary schools, there is a provision for co-curricular activities but without much emphasis since students are only graded according to their academic performance.

Still, there is a wide contrast between public schools and international schools. For instance at Green Hills Academy (an international school), students are given a test. Once a student is found to have a learning disability in a certain subject, time is created to give them special attention until they improve.

In addition to that, an ICT programme is being developed where students will be able to learn at different paces according to their abilities. The school is also endowed with a vast number of extracurricular activities ranging from sports to debates, writing competitions and school clubs from which the students can choose.

Alpana Mukherjee,the school principal, says the extracurricular activities are thirty-five to be exact. In her words, “Green Hills Academy exposes the students to a wide curriculum that is inclusive of different cultures, languages and activities. The Rwandan culture is also highly celebrated at the school.”

When asked how a wide curriculum helps students beyond the school gates, she proudly says, “A wide curriculum helps students to become open minded and thus, they become global citizens.”

Education vs. talent

It is a well-known fact that every human being is exceptional. Every individual has their own set of characteristics that sets them apart. The world continues to fill up with people who, having recognised their talents put all their efforts in utilising them to make a name and a future for themselves.

They are the celebrities shining bright in the limelight, often with their faces appearing in media in every city and every country and every continent. They are the billionaires whose fortune makes them more powerful than presidents. It is important to note that these people are not necessarily the most educated people.

In Rwanda alone, there is a long list of people who have achieved success and built a name for themselves using their talents as opposed to acquiring formal education. Take Emery Gatsinzi aka Riderman, for instance. He dropped out of school to pursue his dream of becoming a musician.

He has, since, won several awards and become a front runner in advocating for the development of the music industry in the country. Other people who have successfully pursued their dreams include Niyonzima Haruna, the talented midfielder for the Yanga Africans in the Tanzania premier league, musician Eric Senderi, and award winning artiste King James.

Of course, education is important. It is the main source of enlightenment world over. Sometimes education is the only thing that stands in the way of someone’s success even when they are highly talented. A story is told of Shaquille O’neal, a basketball player.

When he was drafted into the National Basketball Association, he spent the first million that he earned within 30 minutes. O’neal then received a phone call from his banker, who scolded him, and told him that he would end up joining the list of former athletes who ended up broke if the current trend continued.

O’neal decided to return to college, completing his Bachelor’s degree, followed by his M.B.A, and lastly, his Ph.D. As of today, he is the joint owner of 155 Five Guys Burgers restaurants, 17 Auntie Annie’s Pretzels restaurants, 150 car washes, 40 24-hour fitness centers, among other numerous business holdings.

O’neal also earns millions of US dollars from other business endorsements with various companies. When asked about the secret to his success, he said, “It is not about how much money you make. The question is, are you educated enough to KEEP it?”

However, it is important to know that there are many roads to success. The frustration that comes with constant failure as one is being pushed and steered towards a career that does not favour their natural abilities can ruin one’s childhood and future. It is the role of parents and teachers to help the children identify their talents and then offer support and encouragement in the direction that best suits them.

For instance, parents of children who have artistic ability can buy them drawing materials and take them to visit art exhibitions. The musically talented children can be encouraged to join choirs, attend music classes and meet a musician among others. It is important to note that education has many forms.

Just because someone has trouble cramming formulae and world histories doesn’t mean they are any less intelligent than the rest. Albert Einstein said, “Everybody is intelligent. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
